The marten wasn’t cut out for swimming and diving in deep waters, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t find any joy in it. In fact, he loved the feeling of currents brushing along his fur, the water under his paddling paws, how everything looked blueish and washed out under the surface. Despite being a land animal, he often swam with his family, their tavan and other saltwater creatures. Fish tasted good and the thrill of hunting underwater was almost as good as climbing the rigging of their big palivar.

It was true that Jay tired more easily though. Most often, he attributed that to his age and his mother shared that belief. After a long morning swim, he was drifting now, allowing the waves to carry his small furry body wherever they would. Of course, he had his black eyes open and trained on the ships in his vicinity. With all four paws stretched out and his tail hanging into the water, the marten appeared dead… or playing dead, at least.

Nothing could be farther from the truth though. Blinking, Jay beat the water several times to avoid bumping against the nearest white hull. It had to be the Spirit of the Tempest, his cousin Eliro’s casinor. So close to midday, the sun had to beat down on the deck mercilessly. The rusty brown fur on his belly was almost dry again, after all.

Rolling around, he sniffed the air and detected no food smells. None at all. With a small splash, Jay pushed himself deeper and took the short way diving under the hull. As far as he could see, Eliro was nowhere on deck, although the marten’s eyes weren’t the best. Like every Svefra, she smelled like salt water and sunlight, a scent that blended into the background most of the time.

Groaning a little, the marten decided not to wait any longer. Schools of fish were passing deep under his paws, keeping to the ocean floor or rocky formations off the coast. His stomach was getting emptier by the chime and he was wondering what Eliro had planned for lunch. Mind made up, the small animal erupted into a flash of brilliant light as bones, muscles and flesh were rearranged. Mere ticks later, a lanky young man was hauling himself on deck, leaning against the railing for support and blinking against the sun. Too impatient to swim back for pants, Jay was stark naked as he ran a hand through his dripping wet locks and went to look for his cousin.

[SO-Zeltiva] What the Water gave us

Eliro wished she had her mother's fingers. Not in the aesthetic, but in the skill. Her own knot-tying was pitiful, and it was becoming increasingly frustrating to patch up the net in her hands. Of course it wasn't her fault. It was the damn flying fish and their sharp-ass fins that was causing her misery. Promising herself it was the last time, Eliro brought her knife up to slice the twine that pulled the net together, loosing the two strands from the rest of the net. Once more she strung the twine through the loops that bordered the big tear, weaving it between the strands loosely. Once she had worked the twine through the length of the holes, she moved it to the other side of the net, weaving it through one loop before carefully pulling it tight. Immediately the net bunched up and Eliro finally realized the idiotic reason she kept messing up.

Zulrav strike me where I swim. She rolled her eyes as her own stupidity, working the twine back out of the net once more. Of course she had to zig-zag. Why would she do anything else?

But before Eliro could start once more, she felt the shake of her boat. It was no wave and it wasn't Mau messing with her. No matter how the Ray tried, he couldn't tip the boat, much to her amusement. Scrambling to her feet, the Svefra ditched the net on her counter, hooking a hand on the ladder leading up to the top of her boat. Throwing the hatch open, Eliro's blonde braid popped out of the cabin entrance just in-time to get a good eye-full of her cousins junk. "Jay!"

Eliro hoped down, dropping the hatch behind her. She skirted back to her room, hooking a loose pair of linen breeches that her cousin had left there last time he shifted to leave her Casinor. Popping back out of the hatch, the Svefra threw the breeches at him, before hoisting herself out of the hatch and onto the deck of her Casinor. "What's up cuz?" She chattered in Fratava, closing the hatch with her foot and tiptoeing around him to reach the other side of her deck, realizing her stomach was grumbling. "Lunch time already?" She called back, opening the latch to her tackle box and setting her knife back in it.

He caught the pants she threw at him and put them on with a wide grin. “Thanks, Eli.” Although he didn’t quite know why others didn’t tolerate nudity, at least when out of the water, he didn’t mind wearing pants. If his family requested it, he was happy to comply. Although the pants were technically his, he’d also learned to show gratitude whenever borrowing clothes. Perhaps they didn’t want him to get sunburned – an understandable reason for he didn’t tan as easily as his Svefra relatives.

For the same reason, Jay only heard the greeting in her exclamation of his name, not the protest. While Eliro walked around deck to store her tools, Jay inched closer to the hatch to get a peek and a sniff before it closed. No food smells, but her stomach grumbled just like his. “You bet it is. Did you sleep in or what? Had too much rum last night?”

Of course, he was only teasing her. A tightly knit community like the Darkcrests came with their own insider jokes, after all. With strangers, he wouldn’t be able to share the same kind of intimacy. It simply turned into misunderstandings, either awkward or embarrassing.

Still grinning, he observed Eliro as she moved about. “So, any lunch plans yet? Myself, I was swimming earlier and saw some tasty fish right under my nose. Wanna hunt and cook them together?” Although he wasn’t a sea animal, the thought of hunting fish brought a glint of excitement into his dark eyes. Together with Eliro, maybe with the help of her tavan, he’d certainly catch something good. If she had other plans, that was fine too, as long as they involved filling their empty stomachs.
