He feels a spiritual and physical connection to the sea. He is mostly comfortable within the waves, swimming, fishing, and sailing. He thanks Laviku every day for the sea and is gifts. Often when his family goes to land to trade, he will go to the bareknuckle boxing fights in the undergrounds of cities. He discovered bareknuckle boxing when he was 15 and accidentally stumbled across one. Men and women surrounding just two in the ring. He saw a dance. The sounds of shouts and bets fill the air. He fights whenever he gets the chance, improving as he goes. And in the end, he always feels a lot better than he looks. His first fight, he lasted just over a minute. His opponent clocked him directly in the jaw and knocked him out. He fell and landed the hard ground, which left a large gash on his chin. That first fight left him with a scar and a desire to continue boxing for a long time after.
Though he grew up with the Svefra and their lifestyles, he also wishes that he may adventure to new places and walk the land and meet new people. Though the sea is vast and beautiful, and his family is large and united, he knows there is more. He has little experience outside of trading and the ring, but he will gain it.
Character History Dour was born into the Whitecrest family. He was raised on traditional Svefra values of community and life in the domain of Laviku. He was swimming before he could walking and he was learning to sail before he could run. One of his favorite and main jobs on the ship was fishing. He picked up fishing with ease and enthusiasm. Much like he did with most things on the boat. Many in the family like to call Dour a “Jack of all Sails.”
Dour would often spend hours on the boat fishing. He could be sitting still with a pole in his hand and his eyes on the sea. He caught many large fish with his patience and determination. He was willing to fight a fish for days, though he never had to. Fish always soon surrender in defeat, and Dour thanks Laviku for his gift, no matter the size of his catch. He also has skill with using a net. He often helped his brothers and sisters, especially when preparing for a visit to a market on land. They catch large bounties of fish and save a few for eating but use the rest to trade at ship towns for more supplies and other foods and liquors.
When he was young, he learned a lot about the culture and tricks of bartering. Once he discovering bareknuckle boxing, Dour would sneak off to find the fights in town. After a while, he knew exactly where they met in each city. He would often watch amazed, trying to note different details in the match to help him improve. He would fight, continuing to practice what he had seen and develop what felt and worked right for him.
Though he did not care much for the idea of money, he knew locals did and began to win more and more money as his prowess grew. He thought that maybe he would be able to use it to buy his own boat and supplies and go off in his own to find his own life. His own adventure. He has always loved his family, and they him, but he knew there was a large world to explore. They knew this. He raised enough money from his fights, as well as selling his fish and labor to peoples on shore, to buy his own boat and supplies. He approached Lia Isabelle and asked if he may find his own path. He was given her blessing. When they reached Syliras, he said his goodbyes and went on his way.
