Shadyn nodded as she spoke. “You have a falcon, I assume. Naming him ‘Food’ is…amusing, really. From what I know of falconry, that is about accurate for birds of that age.”

At his next comment, he watched her expression closely. He had learned to watch people, and used the time to get a measure of who they were. She changed, but not in a negative sense. She was clearly Inarta…at this personal question, she remained open, with a few subtle aspects showing that she actually liked his company. He nodded again, though this time more to himself than to her. When she asked if he had a woman, he threw his head back laughing.

“HAhaa!! I doubt that will happen in Wind Reach any time soon. I am a bit of a misfit, you see…I was born outside of Wind Reach, and no one knows if my father was actually an Inarta…so most female Endals wouldn’t have me. And my status prevents me from marrying a woman from a lower caste. So…no…I have no wife. That is not to say that I am not interested in one, mind you…just that I have not met any women I think fitting for me…yet.”

He contemplated adding more, describing to her why not just any woman would do…but someone who could understand him…and at the same time, be different enough to complete in him what was lacking. But…the language barrier would have prevented communicating that effectually. This was the first person he had met in Endrykas that genuinely liked him…and, as best he could tell, he liked her, too. In the immediate sense, she would be able to help him make heads or tails of this city of tents. In the long run…who knows what good she might do for him?

“If you have no family here, where do you live? Alone? Or are you part of some other group?”

His laughter surprised Ife. She winced slightly, as if worried that she might have said something unintentionally embarrassing. But his brief explanation about his bachelor status swiped away her concern and replaced it with curiosity. "A lower caste?" She repeated the words, but did not know what they meant. She had understood that for some reason, his fellow Endals would not regard him as a suitable partner, but Ife did not know enough about Inartan culture to fully appreciation his situation. She presumed they were like clans. "My caste is Amethyst." She said, once again touching her chest and signing the words Amethyst and Windstride, for her specific pavilion name. "Is caste like that? Good to marry outside clan, outside caste?"

With that, Ife fell silent. The topic of marriage always managed to quieten her. It was her duty as a healthy, young woman to find a man and have children. Her people needed it, deserved it. They had suffered hard times in recent generations, and she owed it to the many Drykas before her to fulfil this most basic of obligations.

And yet the prospect of marriage seemed far, far away for Ife. Yes, there were a few individuals she flirted shamelessly with, but nothing ever came from these interactions. She could not help but feel rebutted; she was, after all, a brand new drop to add into the collective pool of Drykas blood. And yet she could not help but wonder if he inherent foreignness was precisely why she had not yet found romance. But what had her father said? Time gifts us with what we want eventually Ife. And if it doesn't, we didn't truly want whatever it was in the first place.

"Oh, I have family. Mother, father, brothers and sister." She gestured vaguely in the direction of Endrykas, where her beloved pavilion slept amongst the other Drykas family homes. "Large family. Close." She added, trying her best to pick out the more apt words she knew in common. "And you? No parents, yes? What about brothers or sister? Other family?" She could not help but feel sorry for this stranger: the mere thought of having no family sent shivers down her spine.

Shadyn’s smile faded slightly. “No. I have no family. I was adopted by a kind man…but…in Wind Reach, many people care little about families. Your position is based upon your abilities. Drykas clans are -- I think -- like families. Inarta castes are…rank. Authority. Importance. Endals – like me – are the rulers, guardians, and providers. Avoras are the next in rank…they are the skilled craftsmen. Chiets are what we call commoners. And the lowest class – known as the Dek – they are like slaves…actually, worse than slaves. Castes are the basis of our social life in Wind Reach. Since I am in the highest class, I can only marry one of my own caste, or perhaps an Avora. But while you are supposed to marry outside of your clan, marrying beneath your caste is not truly acceptable for an Inarta. People are allowed to have…dalliances, shall we say…but not marry. It is somewhat complex, and often I wonder about the wisdom of the system in all of its aspects…”

He thought about this for a moment, then shrugged. At least at this point in his life, there was little that he could do about it. But he could change that…soon.

“But…I have done well enough without it. Xarrt has been good enough family, I suppose, and I have learned the value of being alone. I have great plans…which include seeing as much of this world as one man possibly can. Meeting new people, learning new things, building relationships…making life what I want it to be. Sometimes life comes to you…and sometimes you have to go to life.”

Notes

Shadyn, at one point you controlled the reaction of Ife's horse. I got to smack you for that one; Drykas horses are very loyal, guarded, and intelligent. Striders are believed to house the spirits of passed Drykas warriors; it’s really up to Ife's player to decide how her mount reacts to strangers. You seem to use ellipses a lot in place of a comma, is that intentional? Was nice to learn a bit more of the character’s history!

Ife, I always enjoy learning about a character's backstory and what events shaped them; this was a good thread in terms of character development for her, Shaydn helped fill in a few gaps which is great to see!
