His companion was waiting for him when he returned, already mounted and apparently waiting for a heading. The dizzy tingling had still not faded by the time Shahar mounted and signed their direction, but luckily the woman didn’t need a great deal of direction; she moved into a loose following position as soon as Akaidras began to move.

Snow descended from her self-imposed post on the top of the boulders, taking up her usual stance at Akaidras’ right flank. Tuka, well aware of what they were going to do and where she fit into the puzzle, took up the opposite position at Shahar’s left.

“It is a warm day today, which is surprising.” It was the woman. Remarking upon the weather?

Brief, vague inquiry flickered over Shahar’s shoulders, although it wasn’t directed to her in particular so much as her words in general; was she noticing something besides the warmth? What was the purpose of the remark? Was it a self-contained musing, unconnected to the situation?

These questions ran through his mind briefly, and then he discarded them; whatever the case, he had a task to focus on. If there was more meaning to what the woman had said, she would continue her line of thought; he would not seek it out on his own initiative until it proved meaningful to do so.

The task at hand mostly involved keeping track of their direction; the shadows were small at this time of day, but they were there, and barely angled to the west. From west Shahar could assume east, north and south, and then could assume where they needed to go; he kept them closely northwest, and once their heading was certain he urged Akaidras into a brisk canter, something Drelah and Snow could both keep up with.

Snow, for her part, was beyond excited at the prospect of hunting; her skills had been improving vastly since she had first begun, and she was quickly moving out of her previous role as an observer and becoming actually useful in pursuing prey. True, she had nowhere near the speed that a purebred strider did, and her brilliant white coat made hiding somewhat of a challenge, but she possessed the most important thing that one could have on a hunt: cleverness. She was beginning to see patterns in the way animals moved and how they reacted, which was the first step to using such things to her advantage. She couldn’t sprint like Tuka or corner like Akaidras, but she could place herself in just the right pocket of shadow to prevent either of those things from becoming necessary. Ideas tumbled through her head in a confused din, and she wanted to try all of them. She wanted to hunt.

The brisk pace saw them covering the distance in a little less than an hour. During that time, Shahar did little to add to any conversations; if Jasmine asked questions, he would reply in simple, one-word answers, and if she remarked upon the weather again he would not respond at all. Silence was his preferred medium of communication, and rarely did it occur to him that such a thing might be considered rude.

Snow was the first to detect the water-scent, giving Shahar the confidence to signal the group to slow down; they were getting close to the river. A few more minutes, and he could hear the sound of a slow river meandering its way through the grasslands.

We’re almost there.

The river itself was tucked in a long, shallow depression in the Sea of Grass, spread wide and not all that deep; it might have been a little under the chest at the center. It wasn’t fast, not after the previous summer, but was still full enough to provide water to the multitude of animals and plants that made the bank their home.

The first thing Shahar did was turn his attention to the ground itself, to see what dangers were near. He wanted to go into the Web again, but he knew that even a brief unconsciousness could be catastrophic; the first trip had had the advantage of being near Endrykas, where the most dangerous predators did not usually go. Out here, however, there were bears and wolves and glassbeaks and lions; he needed to be certain that he would have five minutes of peace before he dared enter the Web.

With that in mind, the stories the grass told him were somewhat heartening; small antelope and coyotes made the majority of strong tracks, peppered by the occasional hyena. It was the hyena tracks that told him most; they were singular and solitary, likely all made by the same animal. Most patches of grass would be home to an entire clan, and would show many tracks and trails worn smooth by the laughing scavengers. But there was only one here, which meant that there was no clan nearby. And if there was one major deterrent to any hyena clan, it was a night lion pride, which would not settle near glassbeaks, and if there were glassbeaks nearby there would be more hyenas to scavenge off of them. There must have been a pride, then, to be bothered only by the lone brave hyena, and that meant that they had a chance to stop and rest. Night lions were dark and did better at night; as long as they took care to avoid any dens, the hunting party would remain safe enough for a short stop.

To the river, Shahar signed. Pause there, rest, horses drink, I go into Web, short trip, then move again.

Understood Jasmine signed back to him as they got closer to the river. Chaser raced ahead before Jasmine knew what was going on causing the young drykas to gasp and fall backwards off the horse. Jasmine grunted when she landed on the ground, she immediately laid still and fought to get the breath back in her lungs so that she could get up. Chaser slowed down beside the river and drank the cool water that flowed down the river. Jasmine took deep breathes and signaled for Shahar to go on to the river and she would be along shortly. After a few minutes Jasmine finally managed to get her breathe back so that she could get up and follow her crazy horse. She slowly fought to get up as her lungs were still burning from having to breath so hard before. Jasmine got up weakly and slowly walked over to where Shahar and the others were camped out so everyone could take a break and rest.

His companion signalled her understanding to him just as they came into sight of the river, nodding in confirmation––right before her horse caught sight of the water and bolted out from under her, sending the woman tumbling to the ground.

Shahar immediately urged Akaidras into a canter, hardly able to believe what he had just seen: a strider send their bonded rider straight into the dirt, not even pausing to check if its rider was alright. At least, Shahar assumed that the animal was her bonded strider––with the way that stallion had just behaved, the hunter wouldn’t have been at all surprised if it was simply a horse under the woman’s care and the two weren’t bonded at all.

That would certainly cast their hunting trip into doubt.

The woman appeared to be alright, or at least as alright as one could be after just falling off a horse. She took a moment to regain her breath, then suggested that Shahar continue on to the river––something that Shahar shook his head at determinedly. No, if we hunt, we stay together.

Shahar brought his strider abreast of Drelah and leaned over to put a steadying hand on the Seme’s shoulder; he didn’t want the gelding to see what had happened and think that such behavior was alright. When he was certain Drelah was paying attention, he brought them all to a slow walk that would keep apace of Jasmine without overtaking her.

Snow, for her part, was somewhat concerned at the sight of a human falling off of a horse––something she had never seen before. Apparently, she had been under the subconscious impression that falling off of horses was a thing that just didn’t happen, and to see it with her own eyes was somewhat disturbing; she white she-wolf trotted over to the woman and sniffed her experimentally; alright, injury no injury, what happen?

Alright, mistake, no injury, Shahar reassured her.

Odd, strange, not happen before, you same injury never.

Shahar refrained from mentioning that, in the beginning, he had fallen off of Akaidras many times; whatever was in their past, Shahar’s present relationship with his Strider was one of respect and awareness, from both sides. Akaidras paid attention to what his rider needed, and Shahar in turn paid attention to what his strider needed. He hoped that, at least, would be enough to see them through this hunt.

Her strider was at the river bank when they arrived, drinking from the river without a care in the world. Shahar brought the remaining two horses to the water’s edge and dismounted, although he kept a close eye on Akaidras; there would be galloping involved in their future if all went well, and too much water would give the stallion a bellyache.

Rest a moment, Shahar signed to Jasmine. Then, all cross the river.

Jasmine bent over and thumped Chaser's ear hard. Chaser snorted and shook his head looking over to the young dirt covered Drykas before flattening his ears and bowing his head gently as if to ask if she was alright.

"I am fine but you must pay attention. We are not out here just for a ride; we are still going farther out than usual for this trip and you must control your excitement friend. The last thing we need is for you to bolt if there is danger," Jasmine said into his ear gently when he put his head across her shoulder.

Jasmine nods seeing Shahar sign to her about resting.

"We are newly bonded. He wouldn't let any other ride him so I took over getting him used to a rider. He often forgets about having me on him when the blanket is on because he cant feel my legs gripping his side as well," Jasmine signed to Shahar knowing that Chaser throwing her had to scare him about the hunt.

Chaser nibbled on some of the grass as the other rider had dismounted when the rest arrived to the river.

Shahar nodded in understanding; he knew well enough the strain of a new bond. Time had forged his trust with Akaidras, and that trust was one he knew would not fade.

Wait, will go when you him ready.

He waited until the woman and her strider had slaked their thirst and readied themselves, and when all were prepared to move he signaled for the group to follow.

The river was low, courtesy of the recently-passed summer; heat and dryness had stolen a great deal of the water, and the fall rains had not yet filled it up again. It made many points of the river easy enough to cross, so long as one didn’t mind getting a little wet, and Shahar took ten or so minutes leading them in one direction before doubling back towards the lowest patch they could find. There was even a thin strip of exposed rock in the very center of the river, leading him to believe that the rest of it would be enough for them to pass without issue.

Tuka was uncertain, although Snow was curiously excited for the experience, displaying no fear of the water. What Jasmine and her strider thought, Shahar had no idea; they might have managed river crossing in their past or this may have been their first, but in any case, Shahar was the leader. If he wanted anyone to follow him, he had to be the first one willing to get wet.

Akaidras lingered at the edge of the water for a few moments, getting his own gauge of the depth, and then plunged a tentative hoof into the river. When it didn’t even come up to his ankle, the stallion continued, slowly at first but gaining confidence with each step. Shahar knew for a fact that Akaidras was not a stranger to water––he had seen his strider wander into ponds and waterways seemingly for no other reason than fun––and the river did not intimidate him at all. It got deeper as they went, but not drastically so; by the time they were a quarter of the way across, the water came no higher than Akaidras’ knees.

Snow slipped into the water like an otter, excitement and joy overtaking her as she splashed and frolicked her way across, throwing water at her the mounted pair unintentionally. Akaidras tossed his head in annoyance, but the she-wolf didn’t even notice; she reached the island in the center of the river, decided she wasn’t done and spun right back in to come back to her partner.

But on the riverbank, Tuka was frustrated. She stood stubbornly on dry land, dipping a paw in every few moments but never taking any actual steps to follow; she had also experienced swimming before, and she did not at all enjoy it.

“Onto Drelah!” Shahar shouted at Jasmine, pointing to the Seme. That one, ask to kneel, get her on.

Jasmine looked at the cat and snickered.

"You can ride on Chaser if you wish little one." Jasmine said as she got down to help the cat on to which ever horse she pleased as Chaser seemed to just stare at the water unsure of crossing.

'Don't be scared friend everything is fine. I will walk beside you as we cross,' Jasmine signed to the nervous stallion not surprised never seeing him having actually gone into the water before.

Jasmine smiles and helps the cat up before gently using the Yvas and coaxing Chaser into the water as the two crossed. Jasmine was happy to feel the cold water against her skin even if it was just for a few minutes while they cross. She looked back to see the other horse following the two with the cat perched on Drehla's back. Jasmine slowly got her footing back as the party got to the island in the middle.

"Swimming is so much fun!" Jasmine said with a smile looking to Shahar showing she was more than ready to follow him into the water once more.

Jasmine was still on the bank, and at the request she turned to help Tuka onto Drelah, who was the member of the party equipped to haul loads. Tuka didn’t appear to enjoy it at all, but had decided that she would enjoy the water even less; as long as she didn’t fall off, she wouldn’t have to get wet.

Shahar doubled back and returned to Jasmine’s side of the river as she turned to guide her own strider. Shahar took charged of Drelah, who was uncertain with the entire situation. A few moment’s deliberation, and Shahar reached out for Tuka, pulling her onto Akaidras’ back instead; there, he could hold her steady and keep her from annoying his horse. Besides, Tuka had been there before, and the yvas was more familiar than the Seme. She still didn’t like what was happening, but she was willing to tolerate it.

A hand on the gelding’s neck managed to bring the entire party into motion. Jasmine was on foot, guiding her strider directly through the water, while Snow was swimming contentedly out in the deeper parts of the river as she waited for the rest of them to make their way across.

There were two gentle dips in the river bottom, the first one in front of the sliver of the rock-island and the other behind it. There weren’t any major dangers in such shallow water, and Shahar managed to get both the gelding and the hunting cat to the other side without any hiccups. Tuka was quite happy to feel the solid earth under her paws again when they reached the opposite bank.

Shahar send out a request for Snow to return, which she obeyed reluctantly; the white wolf didn’t want to leave her unexpected treat, and took a few extra moments rejoining the hunting party. Shahar led Akaidras quietly out of the danger zone before Snow put her head down and began shaking the water out of her fur––something that made Tuka hiss in anger and dash behind Drelah.

We’re close, quarry, Shahar signed. There were hints of passage around them in the form of clipped grass and torn dirt; their prey had passed his way, and closer examination would reveal how far.

Ready to move, follow me.

Jasmine smiles and laughs when Chaser shakes out his mane looking to the younger rider.

"See that wasn't so bad." She said with a bright smile looking over to Shahar when he began to motion.

"Right behind you," Jasmine said and noticed all the stopped down grass as if the path was used often by rider, horse, and prey.

She knelled down waiting to see if he would mount up or walk on foot a few minutes. Chaser snorted watching the two humans as one was signing to Jasmine. The wind blew hard across the plains once more as Jasmine pulled her hat down more to make sure it's still on as her hair flew all around her.
