Being driven out of yet another establishment, Wikus clearly displayed the rage and frustration of rejection once both him and the female stepped outside. He swiped a couple of the pests from his shoulder only to discover that the shirt was partially ripped by an angry patron of the tavern, fingernails having scratched his flesh lightly. Kindly, he’d extend a hand to remove some from the female’s back, picking them as if he was picking peanuts, the centipedes holding on as if they were clinging to their nest instead of clothes. Having stood for the first time since their meeting, his height was now revealed as he towered over the female like a mountain rises over a mere hill. His clothing was light for the weather, the warmest piece of attire being the simplistic brown corduroy pants, and even they were partially rolled up to his calves. The night was completely set, the darkness outside of the torches' range being almost absolute as only the freezing gusts of winds dared to dwell within the shadows. There wasn’t any snow except in some corners where the morning's sunlight didn’t reach, but that snow was as hard as the ice layer that covered most of the dirt ground. The temperature was cold yet in a softer manner than his aerial counterpart, the humidity of the light fog somewhat easing the ambient.

Wikus stared down at the woman, looking for words to explain what his situation was in this settlement. Before he said a thing, however, the distant rumble of metal clatter and footsteps approaching halted him. The Knights would be coming to end the tavern's business for the night. Wikus reached for Millie’s wrist and pulled her lightly as he began walking. “They come. We not must be outside in curfew time.” Once he made sure the female was following him, he let go of her wrist and instead simply guided the way in the dark, moist, and tight streets of the village. He advanced with fast steps, looking back every now and then to make sure the female was following. He didn’t say much, except some vague words of warnings when crossing the tighter paths between the simplistic houses of the city. He was hiding, in a way. Every now and then a tear would pop out of his eyes, to which he’d covertly wipe it off, promising himself not to think of the villager’s hostility towards him yet failing repeatedly. He often relied to his mind as he lacked the company, and recalling all the injustice shown to him for no apparent reason only filled him with frustration and rage alike.

A few chimes on the walk finally brought them into yet another alleyway, partially illuminated by the remains of a torch lit ahead, yet the narrowness of the walls that formed said alley didn’t allow much of it to enter and properly light the path. The alley’s exit leaded to a small ‘clear’ in the madness that was the village’s architecture, a zone in which the poor planning had let a small square to form between the houses. Wikus didn’t seem to give the alley special treatment at first, yet once he peeked around the corner, he retreated back into the darkness of the alley. “Patrol.” He whispered, afraid of the consequences of breaking the curfew. Surely breaking the curfew wouldn’t be such a big deal as it was mostly to secure the villager’s life, yet given the poor treatment he was prone to receive, he preferred to let them leave. Looking back at the female, barely able to distinguish her frame in the partial darkness, he remained silent. Only after a couple of ticks he offered a badly phrased explanation. “Sorry, please. I am hated here. I don’t want you to be hated because you talk with me. I… enjoy you.” Despite his ignorance of his grammatical and pronunciation issues, he simply shrugged his shoulders and looked back towards the now stationary patrol whose back was facing the alley’s exit.

Said patrol was a pairing made of two farm boys that wished to one day reach glory, yet their own fear had them stuck in a village. Both were young and bored by day, now with eyes wide as plates as they watched the most terrifying sight they had ever seen. From one of the stone cottages, in front of the patrol's eyes and directly visible from the alleyway, a wall lacked a stone in its construction, and from inside they heard the infinite crawling of an infinite number of centipedes, and as they woke in the midst of the night they began pouring out like blood from a wound. They spewed in great numbers, hundreds spawning from the cottage's attic and simply falling to the ground as their numbers pulsed out, unable to adhere to the walls as instead they became a waterfall made of their own species. The sound was perhaps the worst of it, the loudness and reverb in the silent night being overwhelming, the sound of their surge, of their crawling, of their characteristic 'clicking' becoming a living nightmare for those easily affected by the presence of insects. As they fell, they began spreading throughout the street, each heading their own way as night was the period in which they fed. The patrol slowly backed away, unable to do anything but cower and witness the nightly invasions of the pest; aware that this was only one of the nests and that many others existed in the small village. “Soon we reach cot.“ Whispered Wikus, unnaturally calm for the sight that was opening a dozen feet away, simply waiting for the patrol to lose itself in the stone maze.

Her shivering turned more violent as she acclimatised to the chill air, shifting her weight from left to right aimlessly to stave off the cold. Wikus looked down from his great height at Millie, and she regarded him, expression neutral. He seemed like he was about to talk and she leant forwards imperceptibly, when a noise startled them both, and he grabbed her wrist suddenly. She didn't have time to think before the two were walking one in front of the other, away from the inn and the Knights whose patrol was starting.

Their passage was mostly silent, and the woman listened to the sounds of the village, the soft pad of foot on stone and the occasional muted conversation from behind stone walls. Millie stumbled along after the man, his stride fast but careful. She found it hard to keep up actually, but persevered. As she was unaware of the customs of the place, she had to trust Wikus's judgement, and if he said he didn't want to be stopped by the patrol, then nor did she.

The woman didn't know at all where they were going, and so she almost bumped into him in the subtle darkness as he stopped.

With a whisper of explanation, the woman smiled, slowly, tentatively but genuine. Well, this is certainly an unusual experience, the woman thought. With a hushed, low voice, the woman spoke. "I.. enjoy being with you too. It's turning out to be quite an adventure." She kept her voice hushed saying, "And... I understand. Althou..-" But he didn't seem to hear the rest of her conversation as he turned back to watch ahead. She simply waited, loitering behind Wikus. The cold had seemed to follow her, and she lowered and raised herself on her feet silently to keep moving and hopefully stay warm, all the while peering through the gloom cast by the walls of the houses through the gap between the wall and Wikus's body.

It seemed that they were waiting for the patrol to move off before continuing. Millie watched along with Wikus, and then... Yes, there's something... What's that..? There was a noise, quiet at first, but growing in volume, scratching and clicking and scraping along the stone. And the source of the noise- the infernal centipedes. With a shudder that ran through her whole body, Millie's eyes never left the nest, watching in horror as the insects seemed to awaken and pour like a liquid down the stone. The patrol noticed too, and she felt a sympathy for them, for all the villagers for their torment in having to live amongst these creatures.

However, over the sound, Wikus's voice came, calm as he said, "Soon we reach cot." The woman physically shuddered again, and looked up with a slight hint of disbelief. Her voice was still lowered, but coloured with disgust at the swarm. "Don't you find them," she gestured, "vile? I mean... That's disgusting." She remembered then that they hadn't seemed to touch him in the inn, a strange occurrence.

With the sheer force of the insects amassing around the feet of the patrol, it wasn't long before they started to move off again. Millie didn't blame them, but she secretly hoped that the insects would choose to follow them, instead of her and Wikus. She stood back on her heels and pondered as she waited for the hulking man ahead to move. She couldn't even begin to think about how the insects had arrived here, but it made her glad to not be a farmer. I'll have to ask Wikus later about his job, surely...

The patrol had left, and only the two rogue citizens remained in the alley to witness the hasty spread of the plague that befell on the village. “Disgusting, yes…” he’d whisper mostly for himself. Once the danger of people was null, Wikus simply exited the alley and carried on walking, making sure a gesture was given to the female in case she too stared at the plague the same way the patrolmen did. The stroll was resumed, yet now slightly slower as apparently the distance was short enough to avoid any conflicts or raise the quiet man’s alert. The centipedes didn’t prove to be hungry, for human flesh at least, as they instead went each their own way without any organization. A few were crushed by the man’s sandals, something he didn’t seem to even notice or care. Instead, he focused on watching here and there, left and right, for any staring eyes that he feared would appear out of the pure nothingness. The overall direction followed was rather unknown to him, the poor design of the congested village turning it into a maze that Wikus simply couldn’t quite crack. What was indeed obvious is that wherever he was going and taking the female was near one of the high stone walls that surrounded the compact hub, as the tall silhouette began making its obvious presence evident.

“Here. Come!” Said Wikus in another whisper, finally halting for a second to gaze down on the female. Before them, an apparent clone of the previously spotted ‘clearing’ in the village welcomed the pair, the presence of the wall being the only major difference. The wall stood tall above the simplistic stone house they faced, nothing standing nearby in many feet, which was oddly bizarre due to the stablished architecture of the village. Somehow, even when space was lacking in the streets, this particular property could be considered as the only one with an actual garden – or terrain, as the soil would never spawn life since nobody had tried to work it. Nothing big, that’s certain, but at least one could fit two wagons without touching another cottage’s wall. It was also one of the very distinct houses of the hub, the reason being obvious upon first-sight: the house was partially collapsed. Something had fallen down upon the right side of its roof and practically brought down half of the home, its walls being severely on the right side and in some places even completely lacking. The roof was half gone, the remains laying in diagonal to partially cover whatever was left of the houses’ untouched side. The left side was the only one that apparently didn’t suffer any damages, and which ironically held the door and a single window despite the extremely damaged walls. The village wall was surely the one responsible for these damages, the gigantic stones it was made of being capable of tremendous force if they fell all the way from the top. The wall that surrounded the hub didn’t present any damage thought, and if it did it was fixed long ago. It had been one of the many losses of the Djed Storm that had scarred both the community as well as their habitants. No centipedes were in the vicinity of the home.

“Mine cot. It not cheap but I pay on date.” Wikus was obviously proud of what he owned, something he displayed in his somewhat melancholic tone, even a smile trying to peek through the bushy beard. “It is broken. Maybe one night roof dies me. Someday I work more and find another cot… But all yours this night, like your own cot. You guest this night.” He took a small pause, glancing down at the female, something that immediately sent him in a light panic mode as it was obvious she suffered the cold of the night. “Go inside, come!” Moving to the door with quick strides, he’d retrieve a hidden key from the ground and proceed to open it, quickly stepping inside and letting the door open for the female to follow. A small flame flickered inside the hearth, which stood in the corner visible directly from the entrance. Inside, the house presented a somewhat better aspect than it did from the outside, yet the improvement wasn’t as drastic as desired. Only half of the original floor was usable, the gigantic boulder that had fallen from the wall having severed the cottage in half. The damaged roof and the lacking forth wall for the property to be complete were replaced with large tarps, several layers having been added for extra warmth, now fluttering with the gusts of cold wind but still unmoved from their spot and function. Where the city wall’s boulder had fallen, a somewhat strange decoration laid – several stones piled up together up at around 4 feet high, sort of an ant colony, where a wide collection of colorful flowers rested between the cracks of the stones. The flowers weren’t planted but merely cut and inserted, and from their aspect they were quite fresh as they didn’t seem to begin withering gravely.

The reduced room’s most notorious contents were quite simplistic; a single bed which lied by the heart in which Wikus wouldn’t fit if he didn’t curl up into a ball, an open chest full of various items including some animal pelts and a couple of whips, a couple of unused chairs, and a bedroll that apparently lied on top of some more stones. A table lied by the entrance, in which the man stored all his consumables and food – its levels being somewhat reduced. Melted candles stood here and there, most of them standing in the only window the room possessed. Some wood was thrown into the hearth by the host, the fire kindling itself quickly as the hot embers embraced the dry wood. Without halting, he’d quickly reach for the chest and began pulling out the various animal pelts he stored, their size enough to serve as blanket despite their irregular shape. Moving back towards his guest, he’d wrap her with the pelt tightly. “Sorry. A bit cold now but not later, fire fixes.” With that, he’d giggle nervously before adding. “I have watermelon. You like?”

It wasn't long before the pair were wandering the streets again, Millie trying to tread as lightly as possible, both out of fear of patrols and for fear of treading on any insects. She couldn't help but shiver, and it took the remainder of the journey to banish the thoughts of the centipedes spewing from the wall from her head.

However, it was when they reached Wikus's home that Millie completely forgot about it, because the pale stone of his house was not at all what she expected. She stood, just to the side of Wikus as he spoke, shivering slightly. It seemed that the house which stood in the light shadow of the outpost's high wall was his. It also appeared, and there wasn't really any other thing that it could be, that the house was partially destroyed. She couldn't really see why that could be, and the man didn't offer an explanation, simply letting her know that it was his and that he was saving for a new house.

In a way, despite what he had said earlier, she wanted to pay him at least a little for the courtesy of his offer, and to allow him to add a bit more money to his savings to live somewhere better than this. But she didn't mention it as he beckoned her inside the tumble-down property.

Inside was warmer, albeit not by much. The wall made only of cloth probably didn't help, but there was a fire which Millie smiled at. She looked around, saying, "It's... very nice, Wikus. I like what you'd done with the place." She in fact really did like the cairn of stones and flowers. Although it didn't make much sense to her, it was arranged nicely. As she was admiring the flowers, the man wrapped a pelt around her, making her blink in surprise.

She hadn't really expected such kindness from a stranger, and she thanked him, shyly now. He offered her watermelon, to which she nodded yes, please. The pelt smelled of rich, animal-ness, but it was warm, so she buried into it further. Softly stroking the fur of the unknown creature, she thought a little, and as curiosity got the better of her she asked, "What do the flowers mean to you? I mean you have them on your skin too, and here in this stone shape. Or do they just smell nice?"

XX-XXXX-XXX

Wikus quickly moved back to the improvised pantry, which was made by a mess of diverse utensils and several foods scattered on a congested table next to the door. He took a while to properly clean a work place in which to cut the watermelon and properly slice it, something he didn’t usually did as several red stains from the fruit dotted the edge of the table and part of the floor – usually, a quick bang against the edge of the table was enough for him to split it. Given that this day, however, a visitor had been brave enough to accompany him into his miserable lodging, he felt the need to show some manners to at least not seem bizarre to a female used to proper hubs. After slicing the watermelon, he’d begin cutting the large slices into smaller ones and placing them on a wooden plate. Many of the items of the humble home seemed out of place, quite possibly stolen as not two of the plates seen were from the same crafter.

“Hard…” He began saying, as instead of bringing the plate towards the female he improvised and tidied up the place a bit. Moving to the bed, he’d remove some old rags and sacks and tossed them inside the chest, which he then regretted as he instead dug inside to retrieve yet another pelt, this one brown instead of the white pelt that now wrapped his guest. “When I boy I be alone many times. I talk but nobody talk to me. My family was hard and respected, many times focused on tattoos or glory. I be weak when I boy. Flowers were friends.” The newly retrieved pelt was placed on top of the bed, its purpose being that of a bed sheet. Afterwards, the chest found itself very empty, which allowed him to budge many of the items inside. “Sit if want.” Now, he moved on to the fireplace, in which he’d bow and blow in order to feed the flames and rekindle it. Taking a small twig, he’d place it atop the heat and, once on fire, he’d drive it around in order to light the candles to offer some illumination to the small interior. As he worked, he continued his broken narrative. “I be weak for many winters, but one day I be strong and I win tattoos. I watch flowers then and still see friends. Many, many faces that look and smile, and I remember why I strong and not weak anymore.”

After some effort, the small cot was far more presentable yet still in a very humble manner. The space within the settlement’s walls was very limited, and it was strange to think an outcast could have purchased such a large property. Given his nature and the environment he lived in, one could only wonder if he was either too gullible or simply accepted that his current living situation wouldn’t last much longer. He didn’t show any worry about this, instead focusing on fixing every detail and imperfection his eyes could see. “Now I be far from family, but flowers still here. Everywhere there be flowers, and I watch past in them.” Finally, he brought the plate in which lied the sliced watermelon. Watermelon in early spring was a luxury, but a week’s work was worth eating if in company. Moving wherever the female was, he’d offer the plate with a gentle smile, sighing afterwards. “Sorry, please. I say back in tavern that they gain meaning with time. Much like tattoos, flowers are same for me. Now eat!”

Taking a slice himself, he’d leave the plate for the female as he moved towards the cairn and ate on his small slice. After some hesitation, he’d finally choose a flower and retrieve it from its bizarre resting place. “I… I know you have questions. I live strange, as I am stranger here. I answer all you want, but first you tell me about you. We speak and speak, but I don’t ask about you. Sorry, please.” And with that, he’d approach the female and extend his hand, which attempted to rest a bluebell atop her left ear. “Bluebell for you, because blue look good on you.” He’d offer a wide grin, perhaps somewhat hindered by the stained beard that had unfortunately befallen to the watermelon’s red juice.

To look at him, the woman wouldn't have guessed that he would have been 'weak' as a boy. But throughout her twenty-five years on Mizahar, she'd seen childhood friends grow up to become mothers or workers, with personalities and appearances so completely different to their childhood selves that she didn't find it hard to accept Wikus's description. So then, the flowers were some sort of personal life companion for Wikus.

Well, good for him, she thought, smiling a little as she took the seat that was offered, watching the strange, curious man illuminating his decrepit home. She felt strangely comfortable, sitting in a strangers home, listening to talk of flowers and glory. Eating watermelon, in fact. With a curious hand, she reached and picked up a slice, feeling the cold of it against her teeth, but enjoying the light sweetness of the fruit.

It was delicious, and she nodded her thanks, mumbling an appreciative 'thank you' through full cheeks. It was then that the man picked a flower, and reached to tuck it behind her ear. It was such a bizarre, unexpected motion that the young woman simply sat, stock still, frozen like a rabbit caught at night. It was a sweet gesture, but the woman found herself with her breath caught in her throat.

She swallowed, and offered a tentative smile, trying to claw herself back up to normality, despite not entirely knowing what had effected her so much. "Uh, well. I've lived all my live in Syliras. I have a sister who is travelling, somewhere. And my brother is training to be a knight. I... I'm not that interesting, really." She laughed a small, embarrassed laugh, almost ashamed that she had no brave deeds to tell of, that she only came from the city, and not some foreign, distant land full of excitement and adventure.

"I... I'm looking for a place to live at the moment," she said before hastily adding, "By myself. I live at home with my family at the moment but I need to be alone." She petered out, too shy and embarrassed to continue properly. "I'll be looking for a job at some point, but I... well, I can't at the moment. Um... That's about it."

Of course, it wasn't, but her personal crisis wasn't something she felt able to bring up in conversation, not just yet. Besides, she didn't have any friends, not really. The only people that knew about her infatuat-.. no, her love, and his leaving her was her mother, when she'd seen her reaction to it the nights after he'd left. But it wasn't something she thought about often any more, and the road to recovery was, if not clear, then only mildly pot-holed and unrepaired.

She nodded, decisively. "Yes, that's it." But secretly, deep down, she wondered if the stranger would press, and was thinking ahead to what she could or would say.
