Considered one of the most mysterious cities in Mizahar, Alvadas is called The City of Illusions. It is the home of Ionu and the notorious Inverted. This city sits on one of the main crossroads through The Region of Kalea.

38th of Winter, 515AV

The soft twitter of birds in the trees didn't seem to mind the odd time of night. Even so, Neely found it comforting. This lane that she walked down was lightened by the midday sun, but the comfortably cool weather didn't necessitate any thicker, more restricting, garments than the colorful silk tunic she wore.

But Neely was too lost in thought to be considering the nice day. Instead, she had been lost in thought. She had only gone down to the bazaar, a day's task, to inquire about prices to rent a stall. Of course Ionu had distracted her with a tea shop that served it's drinks in pinecones. Even after a steaming cup of Oolong, she failed to understand how it happened, but ti was a joyous illusion despite it.

That and the cobbler which specialized in making shoes from silk. At first she thought his shop to be the most practical she found, but was quickly proved wrong when the supposed silk only appeared as the shimmery cloth from her home, but behaved like any other leather boot. Too bad she didn't need leather boots like the humans did.

Now that her attention was drawn to the obvious differences in her body and the majority who inhabit Alvadas, at least the majority as far as she could guess (one never knew the true race of another), her stomach stirred with the thought of her own djed manipulations. A magic she hadn't had much practice with, but enjoyed. Since she had decided to stay in the city of illusions, it quickly became clear to her that magic was not an accepted art. Almost as it had been in Kalinor, although she guaranteed the people of this city might do more than shunning her socially.

She stopped, the ring of tweets as well, in the center of the street. Below her the stone shimmered faintly as if bright red pools of lava threatened to break from beneath the black stones. Since her feet felt no heat from the ground below her, she paid it no mind. Instead, the Symenestra looked at her hands. They were so pale she didn't even have the lush pink of the other pale humanoids. Instead her skin reverted to a slightly ashen grey than it already was. Long thin fingers screamed with their fragility, but the sharp, thick claws that flowed past the ends challenged for the opposite.

She had never minded her fragility until she surrounded herself with the sturdier races. At least in Kalinor, they would take you to a healer if they stepped on your toe. She wiggled her toes at the thought. Her first years in Alvadas had ended with quite a few breaks, which made her toes looked like a tangled mess after the haphazard patching up.

But what if she could change her brittle bones? She knew she could, she just didn't want to risk it. Guiltily, she glanced up the street and then behind her, as if a bystander would persecute her for thinking of the taboo magic. She only saw the passing figure of a man behind her, but paid him no mind, certain he would continue on his way. Instead, she slipped off her shoes. The street was empty, but it was best to be safe. She gently kicked them to the bottom of a medium willow. It's branches tangled with the ones around it, making a canopy to guard from the small winter sun.

Leaning down to straighten her shoes, Neely stood, spreading a bare palm flat on the bark. It was comforting to feel the cling of her skin to the natural structure. With the uncanny grace of only a Symenestra, she slid a foot up the bark, like a squirrel, she scuttled up the tree with ease, taking a leap of faith to hook a hand on the lowest hanging branch. Climbing was easy for her, easier than walking had been, but the acrobatics of it took more effort, since excess was not celebrated in Kalinor. With some effort, she swung her feet up, letting the hooks in her skin settle before daring to let go with her hand. Her tunic had fallen down past her shoulders, so she relaxed, hanging by her feet, to tuck the tips of the garment into her leggings. Once she was sure her clothing would not escape her, she pulled herself back up, effectively, at least she thought so, disappearing into the trees. Then, Neely maneuvered into a more comfortable position to crouch on the branch like a Cabaca bat, or a mythical monkey.

She had never doubted her people came from the trees when they were this comfortable to be in. Now that her view of the street was clouded by the thick willow branches, which smelt more like pine than willow, she felt a little more secure.

She settled back, picking a chunk of dirt from under her nail and smoothing it over her leggings before thinking about it. What would she start with? She had only ever transfigured skin, never daring to go deeper than the appearance, so she decided to start with that. But it lead to the next question, what was more sturdy than her own flesh? Anything, that was an easy answer.

Out of the corner of her eyes, she caught the movement of a small garden lizard, and her mind was made up. The soft iridescent scales of the old Konti came to mind. They were much sturdier than her own skin, by far.

Her eyes fell back to her fingers and she flexed them. With a concentrated effort, she pulled at the heavy feeling of djed that flowed throughout her body. Maneuvering it to focus on her wrists. It took a few ticks before she saw the color change. The ashen grey mixed and formed to a lighter pink tone. She almost grinned, but didn't risk her concentration as she tried to push the djed in a different direction. She was thinking of the firm and sturdy scales for nearly a chime before she saw it appear on her right wrist. The outline of a scale seemed to be trying to break free from the layer of skin. It didn't hurt but a dull pressure forced her left hand to it. Gently, she scratched at the skin and was surprised to find harmless flakes peel away to reveal the shimmering pink set of scales that now swirled over the top of her wrist. She grinned, and did the same with her other wrist.

Without thinking about it, she brought one of her scaled hands up to wipe her forehead, finding it immediately slick with the slight sheen of perspiration that was not yet enough to be considered sweat, but in no way caused by the comfortable winter air around her. She decided to ignore it, focusing her attention on her nails now. Deciding to help this morph along, she pinched the end of the nail on her index finger as she streamed djed into it. It bent, like the soft nails of the old Konti, although they remained the same obsidian black. Biting nails had not been a concept she had ever known, for her nails were always harder than her teeth, but instead she picked at the edge of one, horrified when the long black crescent peeled away with little resistance, leaving a jagged edge behind. She didn't like this, she didn't like it one bit.

Scared, she tried to reverse it, pulling the djed out of her nails as best she could. Whether it was the relief of using less djed or the calmness of seeing her long crescent nail reappear as it had been originally, she sighed. "Perhaps not the nails." She murmured to herself in Symenos, but froze when she heard the ruffling of leaves. Like lightning, the djed flew from her wrists as well, zapping back into her core, as the scales flaked of from her skin, returning to the ashen grey of her brittle skin.

"Who is there?" She snapped in common, quickly rubbing the disappearing scales from her skin before she even looked for the intruder. More than likely, it was an animal… right?

Reysin's job as a "private investigator" led him to some of the most colourful people Alvadas. He'd gotten drunk with dockworkers, traded with criminals, chased after madmen, and even received a gift from a speaker or three. This person though, took the grand prize for, well, colourfulness. Both literally and figuratively speaking.

"-n' she's out to steal m'colors, I tell you. A man's colours are sacred to 'im!" The human clutched a worn patchwork quilt to his chest. "I know they covet m'lovely colours, yes they do. Who wouldn't, but I didn't think they'd go to try t'steal 'em."

Rey attempted, without much success, to school his face into a neutral expression, and stamped down the urge to point out every patch on the quilt was the same dirty grey. Luckily, the man was too busy lovingly petting his quilt to notice Rey trying desperately not to laugh.

"Iss, uh, very interessting, Mr Rin, but who iss trying to ssteal colourss?" He asked after regaining control of himself. The human leaned in conspiratorially.
"There's a cabal o' mages, I tell you. Tryn'a use my colours in their devious rituals. 'S why the woman was all grey and everything. I can't go to the speakers, not without proof. You can find me proof!"

O....kay?

"But how doess sshe look like? Sshe iss grey, yess, I undersstand. Can desscribe more?"
"Oh, you'll know 'er when you see 'er, Mr Snakey. With those beady red eyes n' colourless hair, you can't miss 'er. And 'er 'eight! S' why I know you aren't a part of them, see. These mages, all so tall and slender. A whole foot taller than you, I'd wager." Rey ground his teeth at that, but let it go. No sense being sensitive about his height in a human city, else he'd always be angry.

That seemed to be all the detail the man was able to give him, so Rey took his leave, exiting his client's house just as the sun began to rise. He sighed, stifling a yawn. Petching paranoid idiots, forcing Rey to find their house at night. He was almost certain he wasn't going to find anything, but the man was paying. And Rey wanted to take every job he could get. The city was getting dangerous, and he couldn't shake the feeling that they were on the verge of something.

Grimacing, Rey returned to his room in the Cave as quickly as he could. It wasn't safe to go around in the dark anymore, not since the turn of the season. Not since the speaker's event. So he sat in his room, contemplating his options. Quite frankly, Rey was honestly half considering just going to sleep and making up some horseshyke story tomorrow.

But, no, he had his professional reputation to think of. And in Alvadas, nothing was quite what it seemed. Perhaps there was something more to his paranoid client, or his claims. So, he was looking for a tall, slender gray woman with red eyes. She certainly sounded distinctive. Although, Rey reminded himself, he'd have to keep in mind the possibility that his client had exaggerated or misinterpreted some of the details. She probably wasn't a whole foot taller than he was. Hopefully. He prayed.

The Bizarre was his best bet then. Either he'd find her there, or he'd find someone who had seen her. Before he set off to go, though, Rey retrieved from his bag a small pouch. Opening it, he pulled out a pair of white dice. Upon them were, not pips, but images, some crude and some detailed, some coloured and others not. All meaningless. At least, until he rolled them.

The dice clacked as they tumbled on the table, and came a stop simultaneously. Leaning over, Rey studied the images the adorned the tops of the dice. The first was easy enough to understand. A serpent surrounded by snow, coiled up with his head tucked into the middle. If he looked closer, Rey was certain he'd find that one had his scale patterning. He could sleep through the day, and make his fake report at night. Easy enough, and almost no risk. But he'd already decided to do it, so that die went back into the pouch.

The other was more difficult. Picking it up, Rey studied the image on the top face. A spider, red eyes seeming almost to glow. How odd. An illusion to avoid, perhaps? Or a metaphor? Either ways, something to keep in mind. Carefully packing his dice away, Rey returned to the now lit streets, looking to make his way to the Bizarre.

The streets were treacherous, and Rey found himself carefully watching every step he took, just in case the street beneath him suddenly went missing. Not everyone seemed to be taking the same precautions though. He saw children skipping through the street, a dancer tumbling gracefully on the sidewalk, and even a tall, slender woman casually strolling over lava.

Wait...

Rey turned to look at the woman. Tall, lithe, with dark hair.. He couldn't see her skin colour from this distance, but perhaps..

He turned to follow her, feigning casualness as best he could. She seemed unaware of him, and he stayed at a safe distance as she wandered down a street, and stopped at a tree.

That was a bit of a problem. If he stopped as well, that might look suspicious, so instead he slowed his pace, lowering his head slightly to hide his face. As he walked, he focused intently, and sensed her.

His attention split between walking and sensing, information trickled in a little slower than normal. A woman, tall. Taller than he was. Currently climbing a tree, fairly dextrously. Warm, chocolatey contentment, with a tint of silky comfort. He focused on her skin. Grey, yes, ashy and.. prickly? Odd. And there was something else, a familiar clicking skittering feeling. Aaaah. The spider, the skin, the eyes, it all made sense now. A Symenestra. Like Pryzvard.

He chanced a look up, and found the spider was no longer in sight. Up in the tree, his sense told him. And then....

Rey jerked to a stop, a sudden buzz sounding in his ear. The heady hum of magic sounded in his mind, and his mouth went dry. A magic user. Akajia preserve, was there really something to his client's paranoid rantings after all?

Releasing his sense, Rey walked briskly forwards, trying to keep his footsteps light. Recalling where it was she had perched, he carefully circled around to the opposite side of the tree, where a branch hung low enough for him to reach. Stretching, Rey grabbed on to it, and very slowly, began to climb, hauling himself from branch to branch as carefully as he could, trying to avoid making any noise that would give him away. Unfortunately, Alvadas had other plans.

It turned out the street was not where he should have been watching his step. As he reached up for a branch, he slipped and fell, too suddenly for him to let out more than a squeak of surprise before he caught himself.

This.. was not great. Rey found himself clinging on to a branch for dear life, with no nearby footholds. And to top it all off, it appeared his target had heard him. The phrase '"Who's there" had never signalled anything good for him, and he doubted it was about to now. Still, anything was better than falling off of a tree, so he shouted back, swallowing whatever was left of his pride.

"Hello! Sseem to have trouble hanging on. You can help, yess?"

There was no answer. Rey waited for a tick, then called out again.

"Hello? You are there?"

Still nothing. O....kay..... That was unusual. Curiosity overriding his self preservation, Rey reached for his sense again, tightening his grip on the branch to keep from falling. His nose twitched as he scented his surroundings, searching for the Symenestra he'd seen climb into the tree.

Nothing. Rey scowled Had she been an illusion? Or had Alvadas simply whisked her away? Only Ionu knew, he supposed. Right, so the good news was, she hadn't seen his face. Probably. The bad news was, he was dangling from a tree branch, fatigued from using his sense twice in as many chimes, probably about to slip and break his legs, and there was no one to help him out of this predicament he'd landed into. Climbed into, really.

Perhaps he could haul himself up? Steeling himself, Rey glared at the branch above him, and pulled.

Hrrrrrrrrrrggggggg.

Yeah, that wasn't happening. Alright, so he was stuck in a tree, possibly forever.

This was fine.

Right, well, the ground wasn't that far down. And he'd heard somewhere that he could survive a long fall by rolling? He had never tested that rumour before, but, well. No time like the present, especially since he had no other option that he could see.

Letting go before the reasonable side of his mind could take over, Rey dropped like a rock, clumsily rolling when his feet connected with the ground. Well, it was less rolling and more clumsily falling over and almost kneeing himself in the face.

Still, nothing was broken, so Rey counted that as a success. Picking himself up off the street, he winced at the sensation of a bruise or two making themselves known. Ah, well. At least he was down. Back to business.

As strange as that little detour had been, it had given him a clue. He was looking for a Symenestra, more likely than not. Trouble was, there were more than a few spiders around the city, and "tall with grey skin" described pretty much all of them.

Rey frowned, fingers drumming against his leg as he thought. As he saw it, he had two leads. First, the magic angle. Whether this spider was part of a "cabal o' mages", whatever that meant, that had to be something to go on. How many female, Symenestra magic users could there be in this city? Someone had to know something.

The second lead was the client himself. He'd been able to describe her in quite some detail, which meant that, assuming that he wasn't just a raving madman, whatever this woman was doing to him, she was getting close enough for him to see. Ergo, if Rey followed the man, then if the spider showed up, Rey would spot her.

So, which one to pursue? On one hand, Rey was not particularly keen on the idea of following a crazy human around for Akajia knew how long. On the other hand, asking around for a mage in Alvadas seemed like a recipe for disaster. And he couldn't do both at the same time.

Or.... Well, there was an idea. Perhaps he could.

Rey found Wally at his favourite bar, a cheap, rowdy place in the underground, and slid into the seat across from him.

"Need help on a job." He said, without preamble.

"Good to see you too, Reysin." Wally smiled at him. "What do you need?"

"Client thinks ssomeone iss danger to him. Need to find her. Will need ssomeone to follow my client, ssee if a Ssymenesstra meet him, and follow her. You can help?."

Wally frowned across the table at Rey. "Wow. Ok, look, I'd love to help you with this, but... I'm a pickpocket, you know? I get in, and get out before my mark notice anything's wrong. I don't know how well I could follow someone for that long without being caught."

Rey cocked his head to the side. "Is sso different?"

"Yeah, it's pretty different. I could try, if you really need to, but I can't guarantee anything."

Well, that was less than ideal. Maybe it was time to try a different tactic. "Then do you know one who can follow without being sseen? You know people in thiss placce, there musst be ssomeone who can do thiss."

Wally frowned, sipping at his mug. "I guess... I guess you could go talk to Hound."

Rey blinked in puzzlement. "Hound?"

Hound turned out to be, well, a hound. What type, Rey had no idea. Wally squatted before the dog curled up in a corner of an alley. "Hey Hound. My friend Reysin here could use your help." What in Akajia's name? Puzzled, Rey studied the dog. It was watching Wally intently, reacting to his words, like...

Ahh. A kelvic. He should have realized. His concentration was broken when Wally nudged him, and walked off. Waving him off, Rey stepped forwards.

"Have a client, thinkss a ssymenesstra is threatening him. Need ssomeone to follow him, ssee if it is true. If yess, need to know where to find her."

The dog seemed to consider that for a moment, then shifted. In her human form, he could see how young she was, thin and gangly with hair like straw.

"Eight gold." She said, staring him in the eye.

"Eight!?"

"I'm following two people. Eight gold."

"Iss paying for ssame amount of time." He retorted. "Four iss fair."

The dog narrowed her eyes at him. He stared back.

"Six." He offered after a few ticks of staring. He doubted the kelvic would be interested in going through the motions of haggling, and skipped straight to a number he thought she'd agree to.

Hound smiled at that. "Lead the way."

After directing Hound to his client, Rey headed back to the underground to begin his own investigations. How hard could it possibly be to find a female Symenestra mage?

Surprisingly hard, as it turned out. Most of his contacts shied away at the mention of magic, and those that didn't had only rumours to relate to him. Nothing even close to concrete facts, and nothing about a Symenestra. It shouldn't have surprised him, really. He was well aware of the attitude Alvads held towards magic, but he'd assumed that here in the underground...

In the end, he didn't exactly manage to find a lead, as much as be found by it. After another unsuccessful round of questioning with yet another unhelpful contact, Rey found an urchin tugging at his arm.

"Some one wants to talks to you." The urchin relayed, hand clenched around what Rey would guess was a coin or two. "C'mon."

Rey hesitated for a tick when the urchin scampered off, then followed him, keeping a hand close to his dagger. Just in case. The child led him to what looked like an abandoned house, and pointed inside before leaving.

Rey sighed in resignation. He knew a trap when he smelled one. An urchin bringing him to a secluded location, mere chimes after he had been publicly looking into what everyone knew was a dangerous topic? Come on. Someone wanted him to stop asking questions. The question was, who?

Rey was not a stupid man, nor a suicidal one. He was well aware that anything could be waiting for him inside that house. The thing was, he could just turn around, walk away, and more likely than not, nothing would happen. But he would never know who, or what was through that door, and that was the worst thing he could imagine, to have had the chance to know, and lose it out of cowardice.

He opened the door. Far from being the dilapidated wreck one would expect from the outside, the interior was a cozy little office, complete with a fireplace and windows. The fireplace was lit, with the smoke going Ionu only knew where, while the window was bricked up. Behind a polished wooden desk, sat a hooded figure that looked up when he entered.

"Ahh, come in."

Rey blinked in surprise. Still, there was no immediate danger that he could see, so he closed the door behind him, and stepped closer to the desk.

"You've been making some very interesting inquiries, my friend. And very specific ones, at that. One has to wonder why."

A male voice, so not the woman he was looking for. Nothing particularly memorable about it, but he was almost certain he'd never heard it before. The man's tone was reserved, but polite, and Rey could detect no threat in it. Yet. Still, he got the distinct impression that it would be best if he chose his words very carefully.

"Wass not meaning to cause worry, or wondering. Wass ssimply wisshing to sspeak to thiss persson I wass.... told of." He offered. He wasn't lying, exactly, but still, he tried his best not to look too dangerous.

"Is that so. Well, I'm sure you understand these are.. delicate topics you're prodding at. Whether you mean harm or not, these sorts of questions draw attention. One can never be too careful."

Evidently, Rey thought dryly, given that the man was avoiding even mentioning the word magic. Maybe he really had been too indiscete. He opened his mouth to respond, then paused. What in Akajia's name? There was a buzzing under his skin, a hum in his ears. The same hum he'd heard earlier that morning.

Magic.

Trying to keep his face in a neutral expression, Rey reached for his sense, felt warmth flood through him, and directed it at the figure seated at the desk.

Underneath that cloak, the man was... rotting. No, not rotting exactly, decayed. Dead, yet alive. A nuit, like Kuvarakh. Other physical details filled his nostrils, but he ignored them. He was focused very intensely on that sharp buzzing noise that was clearly coming from the man before him. Rey could see, he realised with some surprise, the magic pooled behind the man's eyes, could smell it's foreign sweetness, could feel tendrils of it brushing against his skin.

He could taste, too, the man's surprise, and knew intuitively that the man could feel his. They reached, and felt each other reach, a single, frozen moment of perfect clarity, then, on unspoken agreement, returned their minds to the material world together.

The nuit gestured at a nearby chair, and Rey dropped into it gratefully, the ache of magical fatigue seeping into his bones.

"Well now."

The nuit was the first to break the silence.

"Well now. Isn't this a pleasant surprise." Rey grinned at him, a little sheepishly. "I suppose that simplifies things some. My apologies for my earlier caution. You understand that those of us who are more magically inclined need to be cautious."

Rey nodded. He did understand, really. He had insisted on discretion when speaking to Sayana of his sense as well.

"Undersstand. But now, you trusst?"

The Nuit chuckled at that. "Trust? I suppose, so, to a certain degree. But more importantly, we each have some leverage over each other. If you reveal my secret, you reveal your own, and vice versa."

Rey smirked, amused. A practical, straightforward man, then.

"So. With that unpleasantness out of the way, let's do business. This symenestra woman you're looking for.. how badly do you want to find her?"

"Would ssell your friend sso eassily?" Rey asked incredulously. The nuit scoffed at that.

"Friend? Hardly. I am, well, as you are. A source of information for hire, at least sometimes. My experiments do get so very expensive. As I said, my earlier attitude was merely a precaution. Seeking information about a particular mage is one thing. The start of a potential witch hunt, something else entirely."

Opportunistic, as well. Rey could work with this.

"Ass I ssaid. Ssimply wissh to find thiss woman I wass told of."

"Hmm. Well, I'm afraid I can't be of much use to you. I believe I know who you're refering to, but she's been missing this past few season, and I haven't had any reason to seek her out."

"You can tell me of her?"

"I can. But it will cost you. No, not right now, perhaps. A future favour, let's say, from one professional to another. I could make use of a man like you. And you could make use of a man like me." At Rey's nod, he continued. "The woman you're looking for is Eysena Alder. She's a scholar and a reimancer, among other things, from Zeltiva, I believe. Arrived around two years ago, to study the illusions, or so she said. Not much else to say about her, really. Whatever investigations or experiments she conducted never came to much, as far as I know, nor had much effect on the rest of us."

Rey cocked his head to the side, puzzled. Now that was odd. Nothing at all like he'd expected, from his client's description. What was it that his client had said earlier? Something about a group of mages?

"Sshe hass otherss with her? Friendss, asssisstantss, others who work with her?"

The nuit considered that for a moment. "I suppose so. She mostly kept to herself, but she was spending quite some time with Aldrin Vane. He was a local, an aurist, like ourselves. No one particularly notable. Come to think of it, he's been missing for around the same time. They might have gone back to Zeltiva, for all I know. Aside from that, no one I can think of."

Rey nodded slowly, considering the nuit's words. It was a mystery, for sure. No point jumping to conclusions just yet, though. Maybe once he had Hound's report.

"Thank you. Hass been very helpful."

"I'm glad I could be of assistance, Mr..."

"Rey-Raven." Rey improvised. An amused noise from under the hood told Rey the nuit saw through the lie, but he didn't pursue it.

"Well then, Raven, it's been a pleasure. The next time you need me, ask the urchins for Nyx." The nuit chuckled. "Or perhaps, I'll have need of you first."

Rey stood in a corner of the dark alleyway, trying to look as inconspicuous as he could, and failing miserably. He slunk into the shadows as figures passed, only emerging when the shadow of a dog came into his vision.

"Well?"

Hound shifted, and nodded, looking almost bored. "Like you said, a Symenestra woman, dark hair, pale skin, red eyes, all of that. She went into his house by herself for about a bell, then went to the underground."

"Anyone with her? Sshe look tired, angry, happy?"

"She was alone. I guess she looked tired, yeah. Kinda sad, if you ask me."

Rey frowned at that, a little puzzled, but moved on. "You followed her, yess?" Hound nodded.

Beaming at her, Rey leaned forwards. "Sshow me."

They padded through the underground, across deserted streets and through an almost cavelike system, Hound pausing every so often to sniff at the ground. As they walked, Rey turned over the facts in his head. What did he know about this woman, this Eysena Alder?

She was a reimancer, whatever that was. Rey supposed it must be whatever magic she was using to terrorise his client and convince him he was losing colours or whatever. She wasn't a native, she'd been in hiding for some time. She was a researcher.

That was the thing that got Rey. By Nyx's account, which could quite possibly have been false, this woman was a researcher, a scholar! What in Akajia's name was a scholar, from Zeltiva, no less, doing with a crazy man in Alvadas? It didn't make any sense. What was the connection here? He had to be missing something.

What else did he know? He knew she'd been alone when she'd gone to see his client, but this Aldrin fellow might be an accomplice of hers.

Aldrin was a local Alvad. Maybe he was behind whatever it was they were doing with his client? An old grudge, perhaps? But if that were the case, why had he not shown up with the spider? Paranoia? Maybe he didn't even have anything to do with this case at all.

A quiet yip interrupted his thoughts. Looking down, he saw that Hound had stopped, and was looking at him expectantly. Just ahead of them, he saw the entrance to what appeared to be a cave.

"Here?" He whispered incredulously. The dog nodded, and padded off.

Great. He was going to go meet a possibly magic spider in a cave. He stepped forward, then stopped.

Why his client in particular? Of all the petching people in Alvadas, why this man? Rey couldn't help but feel that that was important. There was something niggling in his mind, some detail that he was almost certain was elluding him. Something...

He stood at the entrance for a few long moments, before giving it up. It would come to him. Eventually. Probably.

Right now, it was time to see this spider.

Slither and Slip

It was dark and quiet inside, and Rey intended for it to stay that way. Slipping the hood of his cloak on, he snuck slowly through the cave, watching his every step. He was so intent on watching his feet, in fact, that he managed to step headfirst into a low hanging stalactite, and let out a yelp of pain.

Then the cave was significantly less dark and quiet, as the cave was suddenly illuminated by a Symenestra wielding a torch in both hands.

"Who's there? What are you doing in my home?" She shouted, spotting Rey.

No. Not torches, Rey realised. Her hands were spread, palms up, and the balls of flame were hovering above her hands. In his shock and surprise, he turned instinctively to his sense, forgetting any magical fatigue he was already suffering from.

Oh. Ohhhhh. What was that? The flames themselves were magical, sure enough, and underneath them, in the centre of those orbs of flame, was pure, raw magic. And the smell of them... Rey swallowed heavily, his nose twitching as his focus shifted to the woman wielding them. The same smell. This magic was deeply, fundamentally of this woman, in a way Rey had never seen before. Just what was it?

"Hey! I asked you a question. What are you doing here?!"

Startled, Rey dropped his sense, blinking at the woman. Right. Magic fireballs were probably meant for his head. How to convince her to not turn him into a barbecue....

Incite fear? Rey wasn't very intimidating, at least in this form, so that was out. Try to make friends? He didn't think he knew enough about her for that. Seduction? No. Grovel to appease her? Rey was never that great at that, so maybe not when she was holding fireballs. Appeal to authority?

Hmm. Kyla had told him only to use that as a desperate, last resort. But that was in Sunberth, and this was definitely not Sunberth. Yeah. That seemed like his best option. He straightened up, dredging up the lessons he'd learned from his Sunberthian mentor.

Don't prove your authority. Project an image of being above question. If you scare them, all the better. Rey fixed her with a cool look, trying to mirror the expression the Silver Serpent had used. What did he have to fear from her? He was a viper, one of the fastest creatures alive. He was a predator, and she was prey. He watched her swallow nervously.

Where you can, make them fill in the blanks. Specifics are your enemy. Whatever they think will be more plausible than anything you can come up with. Add just enough details to imply greater knowledge, and just roll with it.

"You know why I am here, Eyssena Alder." He intoned as ominously as he could. Truthfully, it wasn't so much different from his normal voice, but every little bit helped.

"I-is this... are you.. a-are you a..."

Am I a what, Rey wondered. He let out a soft huff of amusement, and took a step forward. The woman stumbled back, the fireballs splashing (splashing?) on the ground and extinguishing.

"N-n-no please p-please. Oh Viratas please. I-is this about Rin please no it was an accident I didn't mean it I wasn't... I wasn't..."

Rin? Who was Rin? Rey's mind made two associations simultaneously. His client had introduced him self as "A-a-a.. RIN! That's mister Rin to you!". Aaa....rin. Aldrin.

Akajia be praised. That was what he'd been missing earlier. His client was Aldrin Vane. That was how it all slotted in. He didn't have all the pieces, not yet, but it was starting to come together.

A horrified noise interrupted his inner glee, and Rey realised his face had split into a delighted grin at the joy of understanding. Must have terrified the shyke out of her. A bit of an accidental bonus. Whoops.

"Please..."

How to take the best advantage of this... Rey couldn't just ask her to tell him what had happened, not when this whole con relied on her thinking he already knew. Could he? Perhaps if he coached it the right way. After all, that was exactly what the Silver Serpent had forced Wanda to do, after the explosion of the Alche. Confess. Explain. Yes, that was the way.

He stepped even closer to the spider.

"Aldrin Vane isss a native of Alvadass. You, Mss Alder, are not."

A choked sob from the woman as she sank to her knees.

"Have one chancce to sspeak for yoursself. Ssay exxactly what happened, and perhapss...." He trailed off deliberately, blinking impassively when she stared desperately up at him.

"Humor us, Eyssena." He parroted. Hmm. Us was plural, wasn't it. Whoops. Still, it seemed to have had the desired effect on her.

Bowing her head, Alder began to speak.

"It was an accident. I didn't mean to... Rin... Aldrin was my first friend in Alvadas. At first he was just showing me around, introducing me to people, but then he started getting more interested, more involved in my experiments. Nothing dangerous, I swear! We were just trying to see how magic interacted with these illusions, if I could glyph them or combine them with world magics. Nothing that would hurt anyone."

Rey schooled his face into an impassive mask, despite his puzzlement. What was world magics? Or glyphing? Shoving down the desire to ask her to clarify, he nodded at her to continue.

"We started spending more time together, and he started helping with my experiments, even volunteering to be a test subject for some of the less dangerous ones. We worked well together, and we started exploring more and more outlandish theories. We tried combining magics in ways we'd never seen before. Most of them didn't really come to anything, but we tried anyways. I'd never met someone who thought the way I did before him."

"And then... And then I... I wasn't trying to hurt him, I swear. It was just an experiment, just like any other." The spider started to sob, her head dropping into her hands as he shoulders began to shake. "I n-never wanted to hurt him, never. Cheva as my witness, I love him. My husband.... My heart...." Tilting her head, the spider pulled back the collar of her jacket, revealing a coppery pattern under her ear. A Chevas mark. Had his client had one as well? Rey hadn't payed attention at the time.

"I'd g-give anything to not have done it. Every night... every night since I've prayed to Tanroa to let me take it back. Gods, if I could take his curse for myself I would, please..."

Husband and wife. And she'd done... what, exactly? He needed to get her back on track. "Not wanting exxcusseesss."

The spider flinched at his hiss, and visibly pulled herself together, wiping away her tears. Still sniffling, she continued. "I-it was a simple idea. We f-found it bothersome that we had to keep using focusing gestures and incantations to do magic. If we could h-hypnotise ourselves to not need them, we thought, we could use magic more covertly, and faster. It worked, at first. We could plant suggestions to focus on magic, and it would help, for a while. But we wanted to make it p-permanent, and Aldrin hit on the idea of me putting him into a trance first."

"We were so excited at the idea, we did it immediately, after a full day of experimenting. I was so ecstatic about the idea I didn't think about how much magic we'd already done that day. We decided to go discipline by discipline, starting with Auristics. It went well at first, but then.. I-I pushed too far and..."

The spider let out a dry sob, clutching herself.

"W-when I woke up he was.. he was already... He never stops using it now. He never stops using auristics, he's overgiven half a dozen times since the a-accident, and he doesn't.. he doesn't remember me, doesn't remember anything, I broke him oh gods I broke him I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm so sorry-"

Rey tuned out the rest of her babbling, his mind racing. He never stops using auristics.... He never stops using.. never stops.. Why was that sentence ringing in his mind? Auristics...
"A man's colours are sacred to 'im!"
His colours. And Rey had just dismissed that as the ramblings of a madman. But if the human's sense were his colours, what did it mean that he had thought this spider was stealing them?

"And when you go ssee him?" Rey asked, interrupting her sobbing self-recriminations.

"Wh-what?"

Rey narrowed his eyes at her. "When you vissit him."

"I'm not- I'm not hurting him, I swear. I'm trying to fix this, to fix him. I can do it, I know I can! If I could just get better at hypnotism I could.. I could fix him. I could make him... him again. And th-then, a-after that if.. if whichever s-speaker you work for w-wants to flay me, make me into an e-example that's f-fine! Just... Just let me fix him first. Please. I don't care what happens to me after that. Just give me a chance to heal him."

She was hypnotising him.. to stop using auristics? Heh. This was certainly not what he'd expected when he'd taken this job. He watched the Symenestra before him break down into miserable sobs, and felt his own heart ache with joy.

This.. this was why he did this. These hidden stories, these unsolved little mysteries, these private tragedies and love stories that never saw the light of day.. he lived for this. It was easy to forget sometimes, after seasons of tracking down cheating spouses and thieves and teenage runaways, but to ferret out these stories, to discover for himself these private heartbreaks.. Akajia's shadow, but it was glorious.

Rey shivered. He was one of maybe three people who knew what had happened here. It thrilled him, as nothing else ever did. Mind still buzzing, he turned to leave.

"W-wait! Am I... Are you.. are you going to..."

Rey turned to the Symenestra, and smiled. Later, he'd have to deal with all the messy, practical details, making up a story to appease his clients, sorting out his new agreement with Nyx but right now, at this instant, he felt.... alive.

"You will sssee." He hissed, and walked away.

This tale of grief, my offering to you, Lady Akajia. May I find a thousand more in your shadows.
