The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

It's Fashion, Darling.

“So as you can tell, it’s terribly important that my dress is… something special.”

Amelia nodded sagely. Oh yes, if anyone could appreciate the importance of a dress, it was her. She bristled with envy, but kept her face towards the woman’s skirt to hide her expression. ”Of course. And a wedding! If there’s any reason to have a dress made, it’s that.”

“My son’s wedding.” The woman corrected briskly, but the smile on her plump lips softened the blow. “He’s my oldest, and I must represent the family well.”

”Of course.” The seamstress repeated quietly, her words muffled by the pins she held between her lips. Hoping that silence would blanket their interaction from now on, she continued hemming the skirt line of the woman’s dress. Her customer wanted a high-low dress, with the front length reaching the middle of her shinbones and the back going all the way to the floor. Carefully Amelia inserted the pin horizontally around the hemline of the skirt, which she had previously rolled up.

It was the top of the dress that needed the most work: at the moment it was a simple strapless navy dress, but Amelia’s customer wanted two sheer sleeves added, made of blue chiffon that she had previously purchased from the Silk Palace, as well as a matching chiffon neckline added as well.

After pinning the hemline up, Amelia assisted her client out of the dress. ”It should be ready in two days’ time. But if you wanted to come by tomorrow to see how it’s progressing…”

“No, no, that’s quite alright.” The woman said, waving a dismissive hand before extending it outwards for Amelia to shake. The deal was done, the price and style both confirmed. Upon the older woman leaving, Amelia set to work. She had taken her client’s measurements; the arm lengths, the width of the woman’s shoulders, even the circumference of her neck. All were tools that Amelia would use to hopefully create the ideal dress.

Material was gathered, scissors and needles were organised. Amelia was a true believer of the phrase clean desk, clean mind, and that a clean mind led to efficient and high quality work.

Finally, she began.

It started with the careful measurement of the chiffon. Adding an inch either side to the woman’s arm length, Amelia snipped a swath of the material into two narrow strips. She rolled these into long tubes, holding the ends of the material together with more pins.

As chiffon was such light and transparent material, a narrow needle and the thinnest cotton available would have to be used. Likewise, she would need to use short stitches rather than long, easily noticeable ones. A backstitch would be fine, and would also ensure that the chiffon - a material that was prone to stretching - would not be disfigured through general wear.

Amelia began the sewing by bringing her needle through the reverse of the long end of the two pieces of material. Pushing the needle back through resulted in a single stitch to be made in the chiffon, and Amelia added another repeating this process. Needle bought through, bought backwards and pulled to the other side. A backstitch. Simple, but effective, and if Amelia did a good job there would appear to be a seamless row of stitches.

She kept her hands steady and paused frequently to avoid hand cramp.

Once the first arm was complete, Amelia hurried to the other side of the store, where a hot iron was almost constantly held above hot embers. It was important to press down the seams - the point at which the two ends of the material met - in order to avoid ugly bumps or distortions to the material. This was easily done, and was as quick as it took for Amelia to press the iron face down onto the seam, wait three ticks, and lift off. Soon the whole seam was flat and smooth.

Perfect.

All there was to do now was turn the arm inside out and tada! it was complete.

She turned her attention to the second sleeve: rolling it into a tube yet again and pinning the long edges into place. Then, as before, Amelia backstitches the edges together. Needle in, pulled backwards, and poked back through. In, reverse, back through. In, reverse, back through.

In, reverse, back through.

Sewing was therapeutic for Amelia, and though she still happened to poke her own fingertip with the sharp end of the needle, was found herself humming a happy little tune.

Once she had sewed together the second arm, Amelia began fixing her new additions onto the dress. With the collar and neckline still to add, all she could do was slip the sleeves onto the arms of the wooden mannequin and pin them to either side of the dress.

Now for the collar and neckline. This would take much time and more designing to get right, so first Amelia got herself prepared with a sweet tea. A girl could work a lot better with a cup of tea right beside her.

The dress was currently strapless and sleeveless with a sweetheart cut, depending on a vertical row of corset-style ties on the back to be held into place. But once the neckline Amelia was planning to add was attached to the dress, the ties would be unnecessary, and may instead look bulky or poorly designed. Her gut instinct was to remove the ties, cutting them straight off the material of the dress, and instead add another panel of the same taffeta material in it’s place.

But this was risky: it could change the sizing, appearance and entire shape of the dress. But then, had her client even noticed the back of the dress? She clearly wanted a number of alterations made to it, so she couldn’t be too attached to how the dress appeared now. She was even changing the hemline!

Decision made, Amelia began to draw directly onto the back of the dress with chalk (a material that could be easily brushed or sponged off any material). The panel of ties were ten inches long, reaching from just under the shoulder blades to the beginning of the small of the back. If she were to remove them, Amelia would need at least twelve inches of material to fix into place, plus another inch or so in width to afford potential mistake and hemming. There was certainly enough of the material in stock - Gods, she could even use the scraps from the shorted hemline!

Inpsiration was finally beginning to strike the young woman, and returning to her desk she quickly sketched how the back of the dress appeared now and how she envisioned it to be. First, the flat-topped reverse of the dress as it now was was drawn, followed by the long skirt and corset ties on the back. Though her drawing was crooked, and quite obviously rushed, she did not stop to correct herself.

Now came her sketch of how she planned the dress to look, with the corset-style ties no longer there and in their place a plain, but faintly coloured in, rectangle of material. It would be fine, perfect even!

With her new idea set firm in her mind, Amelia rose from her desk, armed with pair of scissors, and proceeded to cut out the corset ties from the back of the dress. The square of material fell away into her hands, as did the dress.

She returned to the desk, laying the dress flat out and began to measure and prepare the swath of material she would sew in place of the ties. Taffeta, being a woven-type material, was strong enough to hold its shape and not wrinkle too drastically, but the sheer surface would make it difficult for Amelia to stitch the two pieces together without leaving visible stitches.

She would need to use the Blind Stitch, which itself required Amelia to crease and press bent seams into the material piece and the dress. Once this had been done, the sewing began yet again. Ensuring that the pressed seams of the two pieces of material were pressed flat against each other, Amelia used a simple back and forth motion with her needle to catch the thread between the back of the dress and the swath of taffeta. She kept her stitches small and even to ensure there would be no creased. As she progressed along, and tugged at her needle, the material piece fell into place. The seam was not perfect: and Amelia found herself redoing several stitches, but in the end she achieved the desired effect. Now, instead of a corset-style back, the dress featured a smooth reverse that looked as if it was designed that way.

Pleased with her progress, Amelia returned the dress to the mannequin and admired her handiwork. The garment was coming along well, but for now she deserved a well-earned break.
