Two Heads are Better Than One [Kaitanu]

The coyote was just trying to get through the ride. Just trying to wait it out because soon he would be able to put his paws back on solid ground and find someplace quiet and dark and safe to hide his hurting head.

He had to keep thinking of soon or he would end up trying to get off the horse right now.

He was feeling... not good. Scared. His heart was thumping too hard, blood racing too fast, and he could feel the slight-heavy warmth of the wet, matted fur on the back of his head. Bleeding. There was the scent of blood --of bloods, Kaitanu was also bleeding and the dead fox had bled too-- and that made his teeth mash together as if the blood meant danger.

Danger. There was something else. He wasn't feeling good. Jittery. Head swimming. He really wanted down now. He had to stop his paws from tensing beneath him. Something wasn't right. He could smell Kaitanu, and Kaitanu also smelled like fear, and the scent was setting him off even though he knew his dogs were nearby. He could feel the muscles of the horse-shifter's back tensing up beneath him, as if the strong horse legs below were preparing for something. Preparing to run. He tried to lay still.

Then came the unexpected, almost shocking sound of angry horse-noises, not from Kaitanu but from some other animal, and the coyote twitched and lifted his head, creaking his burning eyes open. He looked over at the angry newcomer, and felt the fur rise all along his back.

What it was he didn't know, but it was not a horse.

It looked like a horse but it smelled all wrong. Blood and meat. A meat-eater. A predator. The not-horse --the blood-horse-- raised a lip and the coyote caught the shape of bloodied fangs where flat-shaped horse teeth should be. These were teeth for ripping and tearing and attacking, not for grazing.

No, it was not like a horse. It was much worse.

The coyote's human-form mind told him hold still much as Kai was doing, but animal instincts urged him to move, body struggling up into a higher position, and he gave the blood-horse a show of his own sharp teeth, hackles raised and ears flat back to his pounding aching skull.

When he snarled, his dogs began to echo the sound.
The horse-thing was making a noise much like a growl too.

It was looking away, at his dogs which were drawing close, he could hear the the sound ripping from their throats. His sharp bark was a warning --too forceful-- that made his head creak with pain and his light-hurt eyes water. The blood-horse flicked its ears towards him and stamped the ground.

That was enough. His dogs tore from the grasses, dashing close to the not-horse, snapping their teeth, daring the creature to attack. They split as they ran, looping one on each of its sides, circling behind and around, just near enough to annoy. Attracting its attention. They were feinting back, trying to draw it away, back into the deeper grass. Whether they planned to attack it or just lure it the coyote didn't know.

He knew he had to do something, though, move, do anything. Without thinking he shifted human, just wanting to be larger, not a target. He quickly lost his balance on the Kai-horse's back. All he could do was try to fall on his feet and when he slid and fell he hit hard, stumbling to the ground.

For a moment Kyo was lost there, headache and sunlight jarring, crouched with his arms coming up as if to protect his head and shoulders. He didn't know where the blood-mare was exactly but it was still nearby, the grass rustling in bursts as the dogs and horse-thing chased around, close enough for him to feel the brush of the moving grass against his arms and back. Too close. He found his feet, shaking all over, legs unsteady beneath him. A hand went out and found a place on Kaitanu's pale shoulder to keep him up. Then he was gripping hard and trying to walk, no, trying to run, the anticipation of sharp hooves falling over him as heavy as the shadow of the rearing mare behind.

Somehow he got out of there without being trampled.

Stumbling and running. Moving towards the tents. Any attempt to make him stop or slow would be met with an unthinking tug on Kaitanu's arm, and with a glance from blue human eyes suddenly as wild as a frightened animal's.

Panic carried him back to the safety of the tents. Out in the grass there were still signs of disturbance. Kyo noticed for the first time that he was still carrying the fox, snatched into his free hand. He dropped it, put blood-stained fingers to his mouth and whistled, catching his dogs' attention, hoping they would run away from the city and the bad-horse. Then his legs wobbled out and he fell to his knees.

On the ground, he struggled with controlling his breathing as his heart clutched in his chest. There was a whooshing noise in his ears and a high sound like a phantom of the whistle he had made. He cupped one hand to his heart, one to his head, and tried to blink the black dots from his smarting eyes.

OOCIf you hadn't noticed, Kyo doesn't do well with things he doesn't understand. For instance, a head injury coupled with an unknown predator horse. ^_^ Can you say adrenaline rush?

Also sorry if this is crap, I'm trying not to be too rusty coming back in.

Two Heads are Better Than One [Kaitanu]

There had been no time to think, or even to wonder what he should do. Kaitanu was not one to resist when being pulled in a certain direction, and so off he went without one syllable of protest the moment Kyo had grabbed his arm. The horse kelvic had only shifted into human form moments before, just after his companion had done so. He didn’t even know why, except there was this urgent need to communicate, which he could not do as a horse. Also, Kaitanu was desperate not to fall into a panic. There was too much tension in the air; the smell of blood and the threat of violence was almost more than his horse-senses could stand. When Kyo reared up on his back and snarled, Kaitanu almost pelted away blindly. All his thoughts were terrified repetitions of, ”it’s on my back….it’s on my back…” which meant death in any other context. The human part of himself had to remind the animal that it was Kyo up there, and that he was wounded, and the strange dog-things would surely kill him if Kaitanu bolted. Kyo would fall right into their claws.

To Kaitanu’s surprise, the dogs had gone right for Vicious, and almost the same moment he felt Kyo’s weight slide off his back. Then they were running, human, naked, the tall grass whipping their sides. Vicious and the dogs leaped before, then behind, not hunter and hunted but dominant animals looking for blood. Kaitanu saw this as he did his destination, his wounded and stumbling companion, like one strange and fuzzy whole. The world had narrowed into that strange tunnel-vision of the predator and prey world. Instinct twanged at his sinews like bow-strings, finally released into powerful strides. Even in human form every fibre was on alert and ready to alter course at the slightest provocation. His being honed in on the one, all-important goal; home.

Like two drunken men they passed the unseen webbing that surrounded the camp, neither kelvic being complete master of his senses for the first few moments. Kaitanu’s reasons had little to do with his injuries, which were minor. Yet he found himself coming to as if from a haze and blinking around at the tents, and then at Kyo, who was whistling loudly over the grasses. That was the sound that had brought him back. Shaking though the horse kelvic was, it took only a breath or two to steady himself. Instinctual terror had to be thrust aside; Kyo was becoming heavier against him than ever. Kaitanu wasn’t quick enough to slip an arm around Kyo’s shoulders before the coyote-man suddenly released his grip and collapsed to the ground. The fingers that grasped at Kaitanu’s arm had left bruises, the horse kelvic didn’t feel them.

“Kyo…. Kyo…” Kneeling beside him, Kaitanu slid both arms around the other kelvic in an attempt to steady him. There was no time to wonder what Kyo had been whistling about, and how it had seemed like the way Dravite called Meka and Kavu. Fear transferred itself from the chase to the friend gasping in the dust.

Behind him, Kaitanu could hear the sound of feet running, but they were small ones. Before he could turn the kelvic knew who it was, and heard the childish voice of Kyanite with some relief, even if he didn’t understand the boy. Pavi was still such a new language to him. Yet Kaitanu could speak and understand just enough to enlist the boy on an errand.

”Kyanite, help. Yuki. Fetch Yuki.” He had to gasp this out a few times before the boy understood, and in the end it was Yuki’s name that got the point across. That and all the blood. Kyanite wasn’t particularly fazed by the sight of it, and had been looking between Kaitanu and the stranger, and the dead fox next to them. The latter was particularly interesting. Someday he would be able to skin one of those like Papa. However, that would have to wait. The urgency in Kaitanu’s voice was enough to get him on task, even if his young mind couldn’t grasp anything truly serious yet. He scampered off to get Yuki from her tent, running back ahead of the woman with a smile of accomplishment on his face. Yuki’s expression was more concerned as she hurried forward, skirts tucked up under her belt.

“Kaitanu! What happened?” she demanded in Common.

The pale kelvic, now whiter than ever, looked over Kyo’s shoulder at her. ”Please, Yuki, will you help? Kyo is injured.”

The woman shot a quick look at Kaitanu before turning her attention to the coyote man. Crouching beside him, she made a quick but careful examination, not touching Kyo too much. While Yuki went about her business Kaitanu supported the other man and remained silent until he was spoken to. In the face of those wiser than himself, as he thought, Kaitanu was not one to take charge of the situation It was Kyanite who tried to actively help Yuki, but being young he was rather more in the way than anything. To distract the boy for a few minutes, Yuki bade him take the dead fox to his mother and have her clean it.

“Here, help me to lift him to your tent. Carefully.” Yuki told Kaitanu as Kyanite scampered off. They needed to get Kyo out of the sun, which had risen to its full morning heat.

Nodding, the horse kelvic repositioned his arms and, with very little effort, lifted the other man against his chest. Yuki let out a small laugh.

“I forget how strong you are, sometimes.” Even her husband, Raven, would have had more trouble with such a burden, and he was taller and broader than the pale kelvic. At the moment, Yuki found herself doing little more than supporting Kyo’s legs.

Kaitanu didn’t realize he was being complimented. His mind was wholly taken up with concern for the injured kelvic in his arms. Kyo was still wheezing like an old man, which meant he could not be laid on his stomach or he would pass out again. On the other hand, his head wound meant lying on his back wasn’t an option, either. Yuki suggested placing Kyo on his side, which Kaitanu did at once, and with the utmost care. For some reason, he kept his long, white fingers clasped around one of Kyo's shoulders; an unconscious gesture of support, perhaps.

“Kyo… Kyo…”

He heard his name through the whistling, whooshing in his ears. The sun was too bright so he had to close his eyes but there was another voice; a boy there, young, making nonsense words in an unknown language.

He remembered being a puppy. This was an early memory, one he usually didn't have. He was a coyote, always a coyote. There was a boy talking to him, and it wasn't for a long time, until he learned some of the language, that he knew the boy wanted him to shift forms. He had been a coyote, just a coyote, for so long, until--

"Ulric?" He felt himself mouth the forbidden name, uncertain if he'd actually said it or if it was all a dream.

It was like a dream; there was a feeling of not-being-real. He did not usually have dreams that were like this, though; the blood was not unusual, but the subject was. His dreams were not supposed to be about strange-horses or himself being hurt. His dreams were about his boy. Always.

"Ulric?" he asked again, feeling someone stronger than he was lift him up from the ground, and his boy had done that when he was small and he felt small now. Back then he had been just a lone abandoned pup, and his boy had taken care of him. And they had been together until--

Then he was laying on his side and his head, though painful, was clearing. The world was no longer hazy. There was no bright sun in his eyes so he couldn't see. He opened his eyes, gripping a hand hard to a hand that was resting on his shoulder.

"Oh, Kaitanu," he wheezed, when he realized what was happening. The not-horse had been real. He had run to escape it; they had run together. But then there had been such panic inside. And it had hurt. And he could not breathe... he was still gasping.

Calmer now, safe in the tent and out of the sun, he could grab onto his breath and hold it in. Keep holding it. Then let it out when his lungs felt like bursting. Then he inhaled sharply and did it again. Slowing the rhythm. Not letting it carry him away. Not again. He felt his heart slow accordingly.

All at once the tension in his body left and he let himself lay still and relaxed, boneless on the ground. He was so tired. Tired of the pain and he wanted to sleep.

"Kaitanu... I can sleep?" Please. His hands barely managed the sign.

He knew that the humans would want to treat his wounds, especially his head --that was what the unknown-woman was doing, wasn't it?-- but he didn't know about that and it was not all that concerning right now. His other injuries, the mink scratches and bites to his face and hand, were little things of no consequence. They would heal.

Right now, he just wanted to rest. He was exhausted. And if he remained awake, he was not entirely uncertain that the panic would not come back.

Sleep was better.

Two Heads are Better Than One [Kaitanu]

Wide blue-green eyes met Yuki’s for a moment, then turned downward once more. It was enough. Kaitanu’s quiet but urgent worry was reflected in that strange color, like the disturbed water of a deep pool. Yuki could see that clear enough, but habit kept the former slave from saying what he wished out loud. Kyo had turned to him for relief, and now, being humble and submissive of soul, he turned to the woman.

“Let me check him over first.” she said to the horse-man.

Kaitanu didn’t so much as bat an eyelash, but the fingers against Kyo’s fevered skin tightened slightly. A frown tugged at his lips as he looked down at his companion and mouthed “not yet”. Kyo was so pained that Kaitanu felt almost impatient for his eyes to close with sleep. Waiting had not pulled at his senses this much in a long time. Nor had he felt so much anxiousness over another’s fate…another adult’s fate. Children had a place in his heart without conscious decision, but Kyo was no child. Yet Kaitanu couldn’t banish the unease that had crept into his mind. Both eyes watched intensely as Yuki probed the wound at the back of Kyo’s head. Every time Kyo’s muscles contracted with pain, Kaitanu’s tensed as if in sympathy. Every labored breath through Kyo’s blood-stained lips seemed, to the horse-man, dearly bought. Kaitanu found himself breathing audibly as though to guide Kyo in some way. If he had followed the strange new impulse that occurred to him in the dim light of the tent, Kaitanu would have reached out and stroked Kyo’s matted hair, as though he was in coyote form. The fear, the desire for a friend to recover, were so new to the pale kelvic. He could do little more than sit beside the other kelvic and watch.

After what seemed like hours, Yuki pulled back with a serious but satisfied look. For all Kaitanu’s anxious watchfulness, and Kyo’s awful wheezing, the coyote was not in any immediate danger. She had been a little afraid herself that Pearl would have to be called for. However, Kyo was not as badly off as he seemed. Yuki met Kaitanu’s gaze, and her smile told him all he needed to know.

“Sleep. Your wounds will be tended while you rest.” The pale kelvic said to Kyo. There was such relief in him that his posture had relaxed to a visible degree; he even trembled slightly. Perhaps the horse-man was at last feeling the strain of the morning. Yet he would not rest, content to stay by his friend’s side, even when he had finished helping dress his injuries. He would be there, quietly wondering if this was what it was to have a friend, and to be a friend. Kaitanu could not remember if he’d had one before. The feeling in his chest was a little familiar, like a dream he had forgotten for a long time. As Kyo slept the horse-man watched over him and wondered, but kept all things, as usual, to himself.
