It seemed to go from a lazy afternoon to action very quickly.

Dravite said something, "Fish! Bring in!" and Kyo noticed for the first time the slight tugging on his line. He sat up quickly and fumbled with the rod as the others watched on. Löwe gripped his shoulder and Kyo shot a look back, holding onto the pole but not really knowing what to do. "Help!" he yelped, and the boy mimed reeling the fish in, holding one hand straight as if on a rod and the other twirling around in tight circles.

He quickly set to copying his Ankal's son, grabbing the side-spooling-part of the pole and dragging the line in turn by turn. There was some resistance, more than he was expecting from something he would ordinarily catch in his mouth. He tugged harder, leaning back and really pulling on the line, unaware of the reel-and-slack game played by skilled fisherman to lure their quarry in.

He was distracted momentarily by the commotion on the shore of dogs chasing bird, but couldn't put his full attention on it other than to give his own whistle once the hawk had returned to the boat, warning his dogs. They weren't trained to give up food though, not like the bird seemed somewhat to be, and continued their snacking on the rest of the fish.

Eventually Kyo had spun the line enough that a shadow appeared in the water. Closer. Closer. He could almost see it...

He gave a great, final pull and the beast arrived.

...It was a turtle and not a big one at that, its head tucked almost all the way back into its gleaming shell.

OOCHope it's okay that I had Löwe mime the thingy to Kyo? I'm not so confident in controlling other people's NPC's; let me know if I should change anything!

Dravite leaned forward, anticipating the sight of a big fish, ready to take hold and wrestle it into the dugout. He was surprised then to see the turtle appear and stood back, looking between the strange creature and the man who had managed to reel it in, “What that?” he grunted.

Of course the watchman had seen turtle shell before, but not the creature in the flesh. It had strange fat fins for arms and legs, and a head it could tuck back right into the depths of its shell. It had been foul hooked, the metal embedded deep in the front, left fin; fishing line wrapped about the limb tightly where it had struggled.

Dravite reached down and picked the animal up only to drop it again and shake the strange wet feeling on his fingers from his hand. When he was sure the slime like substance didn’t sting and wouldn’t cause him harm, he took hold of the turtle again and heaved it into the boat. “This live in lake?” Dravite seemed confused, but worked swiftly to undo the line and pull out the hook; a struggle in itself.

“What that?”

It was Kyo's turn to laugh, a startled sound much like a bark. He watched as Dravite inspected the shelled animal, drawing his hand back as if it might bite... but looking at it, Kyo did not think it was one of those nasty biting turtles that one had to be very very careful of if he wanted to keep all his paws. For a turtle like that, one with a mean temper, he could have used his tail to fish, like Dravite and Löwe had suggested... but only if he didn't want to keep his tail.

But this turtle, it was okay. Its head pushed into the shell, not stretching out like a snapper's to get a chunk of flesh. It was okay for Dravite to touch.

After the creature had been hauled into the boat Kyo tried to explain turtle as best he could, without the proper words for it in either Pavi or Common. Vani was the closest he could get. "It's a turtle," he said, drawing out the last word slowly in the foreign-to-Drykas language. "I-you have turtle." He reached out and poked at the turtle's face, making the head scooch back into its body, and then rapped his knuckles on the hard shell. "It's safe in there. Have to... to broke it to eat. If we broke it, we broke turtle. Needs to stay in there to live. Needs to come out for us to eat."

That was about all he knew about turtles, other than that they lived in the water but could crawl out onto rocks or even dry ground, unlike fish. To Dravite's question he answered as best he could. "Yes, it lives in the lake. But other places too? Um. It can go out, too. Out of the water. Walk."
