28th of Winter, 515
Late evening

Shouts arose from just outside the River Flower, interrupting Akasja's closing tasks. She perked her head up from her tinctures and listened, trying to understand any words that were being spoken. It was very hard to. Not wasting time, she placed her utensils on the counter and rushed outside into the damp city streets, heading to where the commotion was. Akasja quickly noticed a couple unknown men hovering worriedly around a small grocery vendor's stall. One began to shout for a doctor. She trotted closer to the stall before realizing that she knew this one.

Propped up uncomfortably and unconscious against some sacks of dry goods, her face pallid, was a young Drykas woman -younger than Akasja, but not a child. Akasja knew her, a woman by the name of Brijette Shadowknoll of the Emerald Clan. They had always smiled at each other in passing, and Akasja had purchased supplies from her a couple times. This young Drykas was one more friendly face in a sea of strangers, and Akasja appreciated it enormously. Seeing her limp form made Akasja's chest tighten. She hurried over to Brijette's side.

Two lanterns lit the area as Akasja searched Brijette's face and surveyed the scene. The girl's eyes were slightly open, but she was not seeing. Her breaths were deep, as if she were sleeping in her own bed. Brijette's leg was bent sideways at a strange angle, but did not appear in danger of being broken. Still, it must have been uncomfortable. Akasja quickly straightened Brijette's leg and then began to lay the girl down flat, supporting her brunette head and her upper back as she did so.

But the girl's feet needed to rise for her to regain consciousness quickly. Akasja grabbed behind her for something sturdy upon which she could prop Brijette's feet; a wooden box was the first thing that she found. It would do well. Akasja placed the girl's feet there, effectively raising them above the Drykas' head. She did not know what was happening around her, but Akasja needed the girl to wake up before she could treat her. With her right hand cushioning Brijette's head and her left at the girl's back, Akasja hovered over her friend on the cold ground.
"Brijette," Akasja spoke in Common, watching the girl's eyes twitch "It is me. Open your eyes."
For a moment, Brijette did not respond. Akasja wished she still had some of her oils at hand, but this approach would have to do. After repeating her name, Akasja managed to rouse Brijette from her unconsciousness. She must have been out almost a full chime.
"Hmm?" The drowsy young woman hummed confusedly and attempted to sit up. Akasja smiled gently and shook her head, and Brijette settled back down again. "Where am I?" she asked.
Akasja's expression was warm and caring as she spoke: "You at work. You fall, you sleep for a little. How you feel?"
More shouts rang out around them. A couple young men approached Brijette and Akasja. They were prepared to carry the fallen girl, and waited for Akasja's word before they moved.
"We take you to the River Flower," Akasja assured her friend.
Brijette looked up at the young men who had come to get her. She probably would have blushed, but the color in her cheeks had yet to return. "Great," she muttered sarcastically, and managed a wry smile.

"Drink all this," Akasja instructed, and handed her patient a cup of hot water. She quickly signed hot, careful, heal.
Brijette took the cup carefully, blew at the surface of the tea, and sipped it. Her brows rose slightly at the taste.

Akasja had spoken with the River Flower's doctors; what they recommended were some remedies that would target a few different conditions that Brijette was going through: nausea, physical weakness, and poor circulation. It seemed like the fainting itself was caused by genetics and most likely was encouraged by poor diet and stress.
While the doctors talked to Brijette and checked her vitals, Akasja set a kettle of water to boil. She then searched her stores of spices and come across a few dried, hot peppers; roots, and bark that she was able to grind into pieces tiny enough to use in a tea sachet. These plants were to encourage Brijette's circulation and keep any nausea at bay. Other herbs and plants that Akasja included in the concoction were wild berries, dried mint, and lemon that were meant to fortify the heart, calm the stomach, and support detoxification. As a final touch, Akasja was able to scrounge up a jar of raw honey and stir it into the Drykas' tea. It helped sweeten the beverage just enough that it was drinkable and also provided high levels of nutrients. While Brijette rested in her cot, Akasja prepared several sachets of these teas for her, instructing her to drink them every week.

For a few chimes, Akasja and Brijette were quiet in the room together, simply enjoying that silence. Even so, Akasja remained vigilant over her patient. The River Flower was otherwise calm on this night. It provided a good chance to reflect and relax after all that had happened.
"My brother, Danyel, is coming to take me home," Brijette finally said, her voice soft. She paused and cast her gaze upon Akasja. "I am sorry for what happened."
Akasja sat forward in her chair and frowned, signing her confusion. "Why you sorry? Do not say that."
Brijette looked down into her mug. "I did not want to make such a mess. I did not want to make people worry."
Akasja lightly put her hand upon the cot where the Drykas woman was resting. Her gaze was steady, encouraging. "Not your fault." She smiled. Friendship, assistance.
Brijette smiled too, quietly acquiesced, and then continued to sip her drink, still slightly embarrassed.

It was not long before Danyel Shadowknoll arrived. He was tall, like Brijette, and topped with the same dark-brown, curly hair as his sister. He was also closer to Akasja's age, maybe a few years older. His round eyes searched the room, finding his sister and Akasja waiting for him. Danyel walked over to embrace Brijette.
"I am so glad you're safe," he breathed, speaking in Pavi. "Don't worry about anything. Mother has closed up the shop for the night."
"Akasja helped me," Brijette responded in Common, looking over to the Chaktawe. She signed friendship, help, great appreciation.
Danyel moved over to Akasja and nodded respectfully. Worry, appreciation, relief. Akasja was able to understand.
"I have help from doctors here," she insisted in Common. "I am not alone."
Danyel smiled at Akasja's polite deflection. "My sister is well once again, and you and the doctors here have cared for her. Your friendship is so important to us. To me."
Akasja did not protest. She signed great thanks, relief. "Brijette is very special. I am glad to know her."

After another chime, Danyel carefully helped his sister to her feet. The two of them gathered the tea satchets and bundled up in their cloaks to head back home.
"We will repay you and the River Flower for your excellent work," Danyel insisted.
Akasja signed her thanks, great appreciation. "I check on Brijette tomorrow."
Exhaustedly, the siblings bid Akasja good night.

29th Winter, 515
Early afternoon

With her mortar and pestle, Akasja ground up the last of the spices and herbs for delivery. She didn't want to grind them too fine, otherwise the powder would slip right through the holes in the tea sachets and muddy up the drinks. After securely tying the tea bags, Akasja dropped them into her satchel and moved over to her counter of infusions and salves.

Here she had been working on a plant-based salve for improved circulation. It was certainly something to offer Brijette Shadowknoll. Taking a wooden instrument, Akasja finished stirring the oils and waxes together, adding some powdered cayenne as she went. This would be used as a balm for rubbing on cold skin or sore muscles. Into a small, lidded container, Akasja scooped a sample of the balm. She would give it to Brijette and see if she benefited from it.

Akasja bundled herself against the steady rain that had been falling since the previous night. The air was warmer now and the ground soggy. There would no doubt be an influx of patients to the River Flower complaining of coughs or general malaise. In the meantime, Akasja wanted to follow up with Brijette and her family. There was something about the kindness of the younger woman that struck Akasja. In Brijette's face, there may have been something reminiscent of a girl from one of the Chaktawe clans. Whatever the reason, Akasja was more than pleased to visit the Drykas woman again.

Once Akasja arrived at the Emerald Clan's pavilions, she found Danyel Shadowknoll outside working with leathers underneath a waterproofed tent. Pleasantly he ushered Akasja inside his home where they found Brijette and her siblings all engaged in various activities that suited a rainy day. They bid Akasja welcome, some coming over to touch her arm. Akasja nodded gratefully and signed her appreciation, greetings. Brijette arose from her seat of furs and motioned for Akasja to follow after her. The two older Shadowknoll sisters began setting a pot of a spiced apple drink to simmer and stoking the fire. Danyel smiled at the camaraderie before slipping back outside.

Akasja and Brijette settled down on the small leather couch draped with furs.
"How are you today?" Akasja asked, untying the satchel from her hip and placing it upon her lap. "I bring more medicine, if you want or need."
Brijette's face was rosy now, her eyes bright. She seemed a lot better. "I am a little tired, but doing well today." Hopeful, curious, thankful.
"I know it is winter, but if you can...trade...for more vegetables and fruits... It is better for you."
Brijette nodded. "Yes, my family and I have discussed this. Do not worry, Akasja. My family will help me." Thankful, relief.

Akasja knew that since the Shadowknoll family was now aware of Brijette''s strange fainting spell, they would be able to tend to her better. But there was a chance that, if Brijette's condition was passed on through generations, more than one sibling here would need aid. There was also the chance that the Shadowknoll family already knew of other members with poor circulation or poor health and simply had not discussed it for some time, perhaps hoping it would be ancient history.
Akasja opened her satchel, showing Brijette the tea sachets and container of balm that she had inside. She had also packaged a few pieces of raw honey in small containers just in case the Shadowknoll family had none.
"Give to your family," Akasja advised. "Maybe you not only one who need this."
Brijette thanked Akasja and gratefully took the teas, balm, and honey. "These are the same tea as last night?"
Akasja nodded. "They help with the blood," she replied. "You no feel cold, you no feel tired. Make you warm and strong. After tea, must drink water."
"When should my family drink this? How do I know if they need it?" Curiosity, concern.
Akasja touched the little packages as she spoke. "Do what doctor say yesterday. Eat good, drink water. Your family can try teas for...to help them. Every week. Not only when sick. See if you feel...better."
Brijette palmed the small container of muscle balm. "And this?"
Akasja nodded again. "You put on your body." She mimicked the motions of applying the balm for Brijette so she would see what she meant. "Help when your body feel bad. When you hurt from too much work. See if it can help you. It also help the blood. Make you feel warm."

A younger sister politely interrupted them, bringing forth mugs of the hot, spiced apple cider with a pleasant smile. Akasja felt warmth course through her body as she sipped her drink.
"M'name is Marii," the girl chimed, gathering her mahogany locks into one hand absent-mindedly. "Yer the herbalist over at the River Flower?"
Akasja nodded, again signing greetings, happiness, appreciation. "It is good to meet you." This family and their kindness were beginning to remind her of her own clan. A pang of homesickness struck her. At least in the meantime, Akasja had the company of the Shadowknolls.
"Come back in a while," Brijette instructed her sister. "We're talking." After a pause, and once her sister was out of ear-shot, Brijette added quietly, "Akasja, I was a little surprised...but glad to wake up to your face. I knew you would help me."
Akasja smiled, studying Brijette's expression. "I do not know why... When I look at you, I think of my family...my family in Eyktol."
Brijette laughed. "You could easily be another sister. I already have so many!"

After more cider, conversation, and socializing with the Shadowknolls, Akasja decided she would head back to her tent. The sisters bid her farewell, and Akasja was on her way outside. There, Danyel was just finishing putting away his work. He turned to Akasja, stopping her from leaving with a simple glance.
"M'lady," he spoke in Common, "if you do need anything at all from us -whether it be clothing, armor, skins, or furs- please do not hesitate to ask. We will provide you and your River Flower with all that we can." Great appreciation, trade.
Akasja could not believe such an offer, but she gratefully accepted it.

When Akasja arrived back at home, she felt a strong sense of renewal, both emptiness and fullness. She felt an urge to pray, to quiet her mind and be thankful. In the stillness of her tent, Akasja searched amid her belongings to find a bundle of desert sage. She picked a small cluster of the dried leaves out of this bundle and lit them with the embers of a small fire she had started earlier. Rhythmically, in almost a trance-like state of calm, Akasja began to sweep her hand around her home, trailing the sage smoke as she did so, cleaning and rejuvenating the space. She performed this outside her home as well, tracing the perimeter of her property. With finality, Akasja approached her Desertbred mare, who was standing sleepily in her shelter, and cast the smoke around her as well. Dropping the stems of the burned sage leaves to the wet ground, Akasja sighed, feeling a sense of completion and groundedness.

Sometimes there were events in life that were undeniably supposed to happen, that were meant for someone to see or experience. Akasja stood beside her horse, stroking the soft skin of her black nose, letting the sound of the falling rain lull her mind. She thought back to her young life in Eyktol, recalling the moment that she had seen Islankar. He had been watching her on her lonesome journey, a tiny bird with beady eyes that glinted knowingly. He had been waiting for her. He showed her the right path. Truthfully, he had saved her life. But how had her life culminated to that precise moment? The idea was so simple, but the events so intricately linked.

Akasja looked into her horse's face, felt a warm huff of breath against her body. Even now, here in this strange land that was becoming not so strange, Akasja was finding herself doing work that was undeniably what she was supposed to be doing. It was her calling. Within her own place of inner silence, Akasja knew that even her loneliness here was to be short-lived.
