Basic Information

Race: Drykas
Birthday & Age: Born in the Fall of 492AV
Gender: Male

Physical Description

About 6'0 even, weighing around 170lbs, with dark brown hair and forgettable dull grey-green eyes. Though his skin is darkly tanned from a life prowling the Sea of Grass, Jarhal's windmarks are still clearly visible. The black dye is still vibrant, not faded in the least, which declares just how recent an addition it is. The tattoo itself does not make a particular picture, one might say, but rather has a general personality or tone to it as a whole. It's a flowing script knotwork along Jarhal's left chest, shoulder, and arm, ending in pointed edges speaking of danger and in other places rounded edges feeling of safety. Overall it makes a picture that is wistful and enigmatic.

As for his clothing, it is always of emerald green and earthy brown tones. Always. He wears a leafy green cloak, pinned together with an emerald gemstone, and brown leather vest with green pants. His face is very likely to be dirty and with several weeks of unshaven growth. The muscles of his arms are toned subtly, not enough to catch the eye but adequate for a man's work.

-Chural, the Scarred Hunting Hound
Chural is a lanky brown short-haired mongrel, who's breed is pretty well indecipherable. His tail is like a long brown whip, and his face is long and unwrinkled. A large jagged scar edges between his eyes and across the top of his head, for all accounts the sign of a close encounter with a glassbeak. He is not a mean dog, but usually wary of everyone. He follows along by Jarhal everywhere, sitting close by and keeping close guard.

-Topher, the Little Strider
Being somewhere on the lower range of 14-to-15 hands, Topher is not the largest horse. He would make a terribly unimpressive warhorse, a dismal failure of a racing horse, and a woefully weak carriage horse. However, what he does make is a very good friend and a beautiful sight. The coloring of his mane is a multicolored light and dark that swirls together beautifully. His two back legs are solid black to the hock, and the black reaches past the elbow on his front legs. The main coloring of his body is buckskin with a black dorsal stripe.

Character Concept

Jarhal is a peculiar sort for a Drykas: A prudent man who keeps mostly to himself about his own business. When he does open up, he prefers to get to the point rather than waste time. It isn't that he's busy or in any sort of hurry, but simply because it's in his nature to try and find the root of something and pierce it. Finding the most efficient way to do things is a sort of hobby for him.

As for his morals, he does not pontificate on the virtues of right and wrong. Theft, murder, rape, destruction... these are things he just doesn't think about either way. Living a simple life in-tune with nature is his only real wish. If he comes to like people then he will help them purely because he likes them, usually regardless of what it is they wish him to do. He will join a cause because it takes his fancy at the moment, but will leave it just as quickly if it disappoints him. Dealing with him in this way is like trying to walk an unfamiliar dog without a leash.

All of that might make someone surprised when they find the few unshakeable beliefs Jarhal has: He loves nature, the act of hunting, and everything to do with stalking the wilds. It is as much apart of him as flying is to a bird or swimming to a fish, purely inseparable. Killing someone for flagrant affront to nature would not be beyond him. That doesn't mean he goes out looking for such a fight, just that he does see himself as a protector of the wild if it should need him. Jarhal wants to protect what he loves by bringing his love to others, and teach them to respect and appreciate nature.

Character History

Jarhal Treeshadow was born the youngest son to a smaller Pavilion of the Emerald clan of the Drykas. His father(and Ankal of the pavilion) had only one wife, and they give birth to three sons and a single daughter. His life has never been sedentary. His father, Dolur, lived a rich life traveling in and out of the Sea of Grass before finally settling down. He taught all his children the art of horse archery and how to handle hunting animals properly. The years of Jarhal's childhood were without trouble or sadness, they were full of great adventures with his siblings and enamoring lessons with his father. Those times would be brief, however.

In the summer of 500 av Jarhal's eldest brother, Alder, was caught in a grass fire and burned horribly. He lived on for another two seasons before being killed by a pack of glassbeaks on a hunt. His mangled body was miraculously recovered before it could be eaten, and was reconnected with the Webbing properly.

Three short years later Jarhal's second-eldest brother, Acha, never returned from a hunt. His body was never recovered, but his beloved hunting dog Chural limped home a day later. The dog now accompanies Jarhal on his travels, still bearing the scar of a gruesome gash along his face.

Mercifully, his sister has survived and is currently living with her new husband. Last he knew, she was happy and all was well. His parents are still living, though now growing old, so it's quite up to him to continue his family's lineage. He still mourns the loss of his brothers internally, but one must be used to these things when growing in the harshness of Cyphrus. One thing that has lightened his entire family's spirits is when he found his match in a bold Strider named Topher, only two seasons ago.

Since he has been on his own, he has developed a very strong desire to explore and document things no one else has seen. One day he wants to call himself a Ranger, and see every square inch of the world.

Jarhal Treeshadow

Postby Jarhal Treeshadow on November 24th, 2010, 4:28 pm

General Information :
1. What is your Name?
Jarhal of the Treeshadow Pavilion.
2. Do you go by a nickname or pet name?
No.
3. How old are you?
19.
4. What is your height?
Six feet, or about 18 hands.
5. What is your weight?
About the weight of a six-foot man.

Aesthetics :
1. Describe yourself as you see yourself.
A hunter of the Emerald clan. That's all I try to be. A hunter that tries his best to honor Caiyha for whatever wanders into my traps or stops in front of my arrows.
2. Describe yourself as others typically see you.
It depends who's doing the seeing. I can't read minds.
3. What is your favorite body feature?
My fingers. They're rather useful.
4. How physically fit are you?
Fit enough to draw my bow and track wounded prey. The wild shapes you the more you immerse yourself into it, and I've only skipped along the surface.
5. How do you typically dress and what is your style?
My style is whatever doesn't make sound when you creep, whatever doesn't pinch when you sit in ambush, and whatever blends with my hiding place. I typically wear green, as you might imagine.

Family :
1. Who are your parents and what are they like?
They're fine Drykas with their own stories, so you should really ask them. My father is a true hunter and my mother knows her cats, that's all I'll say.
2. Do you have any brothers or sisters?
Yes, I do. The Sea of Grass has taken two brothers from us, but my sister still lives happily. She inherited my mother's way with animals, so she's not totally useless. Don't tell her I said that.
3. What is your extended family like?
My extended family is my clan, and any Drykas that needs help. I'll be there for them if any of them need it.
4. Do you consider close friends as important or more/less important than family?
If a friend is close enough, then they are family. Otherwise, they'll be second to my Pavilion.
5. Do you treat animals like family?
Of course I do, what a silly question to ask. Topher is my third brother, and Chural is my cranky uncle.

Location :
1. Where were you born?
A clearing outside Endrykas in the spring.
2. Where do you live now?
Wherever the prey lives... but I frequent Endrykas.
3. If you could live anywhere in Mizahar where would that be?
Cyphrus holds a special place in my heart, but I've heard about places like Falyndar and Eyktol. I'd like to see them some day, but not live any one place too long.
4. Do you have a favorite place to vacation or spend leisure time?
Endrykas is where I go to rest, but I do yearn for more things to do.
5. Where do you fear to be?
A grave.

Traits :
1. Do you have any physical weaknesses (disease, scars, and missing limbs?)
Not currently, but I'll be lucky not to pick up some soon enough.
2. Are you right handed or left handed?
I favor my right hand.
3. What languages do you speak? What do you sound like? Do you have an accent?
I speak Pavi, of course, and Common and I know the useful bits of hand language. My voice is deep, but I tend to speak softly by habit. I suppose, to non-Drykas, I do have a bit of a halting accent when I speak. Common still feels awkward to me and I have a habit of pausing too long after some words.
4. Do you have any odd mannerisms, annoying habits, or other defining characteristics?
I pray to Caiyha after every kill, but I'm not sure if that's odd. I like to hunt for just the right word when I'm talking, and I will stop and think if I can't immediately find it.
5. Do you have (or want to get) any tattoos or piercing? Why do you have them (or will get them) ?
I am tattooed with my Windmark, as all Drykas do when they are found by their Strider, and I have no desire for any more. It hurts quite a bit.

Occupations :
1. What is your occupation?
I am a hunter.
2. Do you like/dislike your work? Why?
I love my 'work', because it's what I am. I don't know how to do anything different, really.
3. If you could be anything you wanted to, what would you be?
A hawk. Otherwise, I'm content with what I am.
4. What occupation do you admire the most? Why?
Besides my own, the Stormwardens of the Diamond clan. I don't really like fighting people so I'm thankful that they're ready to do it for me.
5. What occupation do you lest like? Why?
Merchants. I find the whole thing dirty. The world would be quite fine without gold or silver or copper, with everyone making what they need and giving what they can spare.

Childhood :
1. What sort of child were you?
I'm not sure what sorts of children there are, really. I made trouble but was silent enough to get away with it.
2. What is your favorite memory from childhood?
The first deer I ever took down by myself. If I close my eyes, I can still see the bloody arrow sticking out of the ground as it drove right through the creature's heart and out the other side. I can still feel the excitement as I tracked it's blood trail to where it laid in a heap.
3. What is your worst memory from childhood?
The night that Chural, our hunting dog, came to us. He was scratched and cut and bitten, and the blood matted his fur. I will never forget trying to pet him and finding my hand stained with blood. It was also the night we knew that another one of my brothers was dead, because Chural would not have left him otherwise.
4. What sort of relationship did you have with your parents?
I respect them both greatly. My father set me on the path of the hunter, there isn't any greater gift I could have been given.
5. Who was your most influential rolemodel?
The Ranger Bolai Fionse is something of a rolemodel. I have read his notes and I find him interesting to study.

1. What sort of education do you have?
