Seirei glanced at the twins. Fortunately, they were asleep. She had a lot of work she wanted to get done today, and it was best to get it done while the kids were asleep. The last thing she needed was the distraction of twins who wanted to play while she was trying to do delicate work.

With one final glance at the twins, Seirei got her cooking pot out, and went outside. She headed into the supply tent and fetched a jug of water. She used the jug to fill the pot with water before returning it to the supply tent. Then she walked to the edge of camp where she had buried several good sized bones to prevent them from stinking up the camp. She dug up the bones, and headed back to her fire pit.

When she had everything she needed, Seirei began the task of digging a fire pit. Now that she was starting to get the hang of it, it was easier for her to consistently dig a proper fire pit. After she finished digging the pit itself, she lined the bottom of the pit with bits of dried bark that she'd collected while making beads. The bits of bark made perfect kindling. They were easy to carry around as they traveled from one camp to the next, and they tended to burn a bit longer than loose dried grass did. That made it easier for the bundles of twisted grass to catch fire.

Once Seirei had prepared the fire pit, she used her flint to strike sparks into the layer of bark lining the pit. It took her several attempts, but the bark finally caught on fire. Seirei carefully placed a bundle of twisted grass beside the small flame. Then she blew gently from an angle that pushed the tentative flame towards the bundle of grass. Her efforts succeeded, and the grass bundle caught flame.

Seirei carefully nursed the small flame into a decent sized blaze. Then she got the cooking stand she'd made, and hung the pot over the fire. She placed the bones into the pot, and left them to cook for a while. Trial and error had taught her that cooking the bones for three bells would soften them up enough to make them easier to carve without turning them brittle.

Seirei wanted to keep busy while the bones were cooking, so she went back into her tent to check on the twins. They were still sleeping peacefully, and Seirei hoped that they would continue to do so for a while longer. Assuming that the smell caused by the bones cooking didn't wake them up, she thought they would sleep for at least another bell or so. And Teisaia would be coming over around that time to watch them for a while so she could work in peace.

She selected some willow branches, grabbed her tools, and headed back outside once more. After settling herself, and making herself comfortable, it was time to get to work. Seirei began by using her knife to carefully strip the bark off of the branches she intended to use. As she worked, she collected the bits of bark into a pile so she could save them for kindling.

When she was done with that, she gave each branch a once over to make sure she hadn't missed any. Then she began the task of cutting the branches into pieces. She wasn't especially skilled at keeping exact track of the time by using the passage of the sun through the sky, but making beads was a very familiar task to her. She knew how long it took her to strip the bark off of a branch, or to cut said branch into usable pieces. And so she kept track of the time by the work that she did. By the time she had finished drilling holes in each of the pieces, the bones were ready to be worked.

Seirei set the pieces of wood out to dry, then retreated back into her tent to get the tools she'd need to work with the bones. The twins were awake, so she took the time to feed them before emerging from the tent once more. It didn't take as long as it usually did because they weren't as hungry as they usually were after waking up from a nap. Seirei thought it might be due to the stench of the cooking bones. That was enough to put anyone's appetite off.

Teisaia was there when she came back out. Seirei thanked her for being willing to watch Lukar and Lira, then gestured at the tent, signalling that the twins were inside. Teisaia grinned, knowing how absorbed Seirei tended to get in her work. Then she vanished into the tent, and Seirei was left to work in peace. The neighbors gave her dark looks as she took the pot off of the fire, and set it aside so the bones would cool enough for her to work with them. She knew that the stench was the cause of their dark looks, but there was little she could do about it, so she ignored them.

When the bones were cool enough to touch without burning herself, Seirei removed them from the pot. She began by using her flint to scrape off the remaining bits of flesh and fat off of the bones. Her work was made considerably easier by having cooked them first. The bits of flesh came off easily.

Once she was satisfied that the bones were clean, she examined them carefully. One, a leg bone, was splintered at one end. Flawed. But in this case, it was perfect for what she wanted to do. Seirei used her flint to strike the splintered end of the bone sharply. This resulted in pieces of the bone breaking off, which was exactly what she wanted. The pieces were varied in length, but they all had sharp edges where they had splintered off of the main bone.

Seirei began separating the pieces into piles based on how long they were. Once she had sorted them all, she picked one of the longer bone fragments, and used her burin to slowly shape the piece of bone into a needle. Scraping the flint over the surface of the bone felt different than using a chisel to shape wood. And the sound it made was unnerving at times. But she was starting to get used to both the sound, and the feel of it. Before long, she probably wouldn't even notice it. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the stench that still lingered in the air. Seirei didn't think that she'd ever get used to that.

Shaping the bone needles was both harder, and easier than Seirei had suspected it would be. Easier because simply splintering them off of the main bone gave them their general shape. But harder in that her own inexperience in working with bone ensured that one or two out of every three she attempted to make were unusable. She wasn't sure if she was putting too much pressure on the bone fragments because she was used to working with a softer material, but many of the fragments she tried to shape fragmented even further, becoming unusable. Others didn't quite fragment under her efforts, but they did develop spidery cracks throughout the surface of the bone that would weaken them. Seirei wasn't certain, but she suspected these would shatter if they were used, because her experience with wood told her that something made out of wood that was flawed in such a way would shatter. Even so, Seirei did end up with some needles she hoped to be able to sell to the traders.

After she had given her bone needles their basic shape, the next step was to sharpen one end into a point. Seirei used a piece of flint to help her with this task. Like with shaping the needles, this task was harder than Seirei had thought it would be because of how sharp the piece of flint she was using was. She had to split her focus in half, concentrating equally on what she was doing, while being careful not to slice her hands open on the flint. By the time she was finished giving each of her bone needles a sharp point, Teisaia was poking her head out of Seirei's tent to tell her that the twins were hungry.

Seirei fed Lukar and Lira as quickly as she could, then helped her friend settle them down for their afternoon nap. When she was done with that, it was time to go back to work. She took a few chimes to examine her progress so far. While she had fewer bone needles than she'd like, the ones she had looked to be decent enough. So she moved on to the next step.

She selected one of the needles, and studied it carefully. A needle needed to have an eye, and it was important to put it in the right place. When the had the location of the needle's eye firmly in her mind, Seirei took out her knife, and pressed the tip against the surface of the bone where she wanted the eye to be. Using a knife to work bone wasn't ideal. Seirei had already learned that much. The metal blade tended to become dull, and wear out far faster than it would when used to carve wood. It was why special tools like flint, and burins were needed. But in this case, Seirei wanted her knife all the same. She wasn't yet confidant enough with her skill in using a piece of flint as a tool. For something that required as much precision, and control as making an eye in a needle, she wanted her knife. Besides, making small holes in a handful of bone splinters didn't seem likely to cause that much wear and tear on her knife, anyway.

When she was ready, she bore down on the bone with the tip of her blade. Slowly, but steadily, she added more pressure, until her efforts began to have effect. The bone gave way to her knife. Unfortunately, it split down the middle. Clearly, she had used too much pressure. But after examining the pieces, she decided that she could still use them. Both were long, and straight enough to be used. They would just be thinner than most other needles she had seen in the past. Seirei wanted to get some practice with the larger needles in before attempting to work with the thinner pieces, so she selected another bone needle, and tried again.

Her second attempt met with failure, as well. Like before, the needle split in half, but this time, spidery cracks spread out over the surface of both pieces. Neither were usable, so she set them aside, and selected another needle. The third attempt was better. Slowly, but surely, Seirei got the hang of how much pressure she needed to use, and how quickly she needed to apply it to make a proper eye without splitting or shattering the needle she was trying to make. By the time she was done, she only had nine usable needles. But she was confidant that the next time she tried to make them, she would have better luck, because she would learn from the mistakes she had made today.

The final task she needed to do was to smooth out the surface of her needles so that there were no rough areas. If she neglected to do so, the people who used her needles might get a bone splinter, or tear the tips of their fingers open on a piece of sharp bone jutting out from the needle. So Seirei set her knife aside, and picked up her smoothing cloth. Since bone was harder than wood, it was harder to smooth it out. But Seirei was both patient, and determined. She wanted...needed the money she would earn from selling these needles to save towards helping her to escape her captivity. And her efforts paid off. It took her far longer than she would have liked, but in the end, she had nine bone needles to sell to the traders. Next time, it would be more.

Seirei examined her work carefully. Her needles were decent enough quality wise...but they were plain, simple things. In the past, Seirei had seen needles that were as beautiful as they were useful. Elaborately carved, beautiful works of art that were a delight to the eye as well as a useful tool. Seirei had no illusions that her own skills would allow her to create such a thing...yet. Her experience working with bone was just too limited. It was a new material to her, after all. If she were to try and carve designs into her needles, she was certain that she would fail. Worse, she was likely to destroy them in the process. But that would change. With time, and practice, she would improve. And what better time to start practicing than the present? She had boiled several bones for just that reason, after all.

Seirei selected another bone to work with. It was another leg bone, like before. But this one was more intact, rather than being splintered at one end. Since she was simply practicing, she didn't bother to remove the marrow from within the bone the way she would need to if she was making anything she intended to keep.

For several chimes, Seirei simply stared at the bone in her hands. She was willing it to reveal its inner form to her. And after a while, she started to get an idea for a design. It would be a spiral pattern, like a vine winding around a tree. Within the spaces between the spirals would be a variety of things. Basic shapes. Flowers. Lines. All sort of things that would give her the practice she needed. Seirei closed her eyes, picturing the design in her head.

When she had what she wanted to do firmly in mind, it was time to begin. She needed practice with a piece of flint if she ever wanted to improve her control with one, so that was her tool of choice for this task. Seirei pressed the edge of her flint against the bottom of the bone. She scored the surface of the bone lightly, but with enough pressure to leave a distinct mark as she drew the tool along the surface of the bone in a spiral pattern.

All of her attention was focused on the task at hand, and the world around her faded away as she worked. As she worked, she experimented with putting various amounts of pressure on the bone. In the process of doing so, she got a feel of how much pressure was needed to put a dent in the surface compared to scoring a line into it. She also got a feel for how much more pressure was needed to turn that dent into a hole. Likewise, she learned how much pressure was too much by the way spidery cracks would spread out from the damaged area.

Once her spiral had reached all the way to the top of the bone, she began etching patterns into the spaces between the spirals. Some were shapes such as squares, circles, and triangles. In doing so, she hoped to get practice in making straight lines, curved ones, and angles as well. She also carved flower designs; more practice with circles, and curved lines, as well as ovals. It also gave her some practice with detail work as she tried to carve the veins of a real leaf onto the ones she carved into the bone she was practicing with. Still other designs were composed of nothing more than lines that when together, formed a variety of patterns. Each of her efforts in creating the designs were meant to teach herself better control with an unfamiliar tool.

When she was done, she examined her work with a critical eye. She could see the improvements as she worked. The designs towards the top of the bone were better than the ones down at the bottom. She didn't think she was anywhere near skilled enough to try carving a design on something as small and thin as a needle, but the visible signs of improvement gave her hope. She would get there in time.

Judging by how low the sun was in the sky, and the pale, dim light, it was getting late. Teisaia would have to return home soon, and the twins would need to be fed again. More than that, they would want their mother, not just anyone watching them. So Seirei decided to call it a day. She cleaned up after herself, and put her tools away. Then she thanked her friend sincerely for being willing to watch the twins for the day so she could get some work done. When Teisaia was gone, Seirei headed back inside with the twins. There would be time enough tomorrow to head out to the traders and try to sell her needles.
