[Gossamer's Scrapbook] The Ethereal Canyon

While I may be new to this site, having yet to even finish my character app, I'm hoping what I'm about to say will not in any way count against me in the ever approaching future of my time here.

Simply put, I just couldn't ignore what was being said here as soon as I'd come across it. Something about it, and how it's being said, compelled me to respond. Especially given Ricky's response above, of submitting to another's opinion about their own writing styles and techniques.

I think the most beautiful thing about sites like this should be the freedom to express ones writing in whichever way they choose. Whether by color coding their text in one to ten different shades, italicizing thoughts or bolding their speech or, as you've chosen, writing as plainly as possible. That's what this is all really about in the end - enjoying it.

Which you, yourself, have repeated multiple times in your scrapbook is something that is very important to you. Thus, it should not be about criticizing others for not upholding the standards we've set for ourselves as writers and artists of any trait.

That isn't to say I don't understand your frustration. It, at times, can be very jarring. But even as an admin, or just another member of the site, I don't really think it's your place to call anyone out for it. In fact, it can feel very alienating or disparaging for whomever it is on the other side of your whipping words.

In the end, sites like this or the people who run them should not shame others into conformity. This is all for fun; something to enjoy while we escape the trivial pursuits of our real worlds. It should be about learning and adapting as we grow together as writers, in amazing settings such as you've created for us. At least that's my two cents on the subject. So allow others to enjoy it, however they find most suitable to them.

I think it's best that way, don't you? :)

Cirice,

As we all cannot deny that you are correct that we are all here for the same thing: writing. The point of Goss's rant, and something we are all in agreeance with, is that people are just looking for the colored strips of words and going with them only when there is a whole plethora of other words in one's post that makes things more interesting. As in with real life, spoken words mean only so much -- some can mean something entirely differently when spoken in a different tone -- but tone, body language and such convey so much emotion and meaning.

That body language and tone is what constitutes as the rest of one's post, but others are ignoring those and that hurts post replies and makes people feel dull and used. I agree that people should enjoy coming here and writing and reading and we all do. But ten colors is a bit much. If you are spending time color coordinating things instead of just writing there are some problems. I have minimized my writing changes to stylizing of bold or italicized because that is writing stripped down. I probably will eventually drop the bold though as it is too annoying to do most times.

Goss's rant isn't... Hang on, lemme get the quote:

but even as an admin, or just another member of the site, I don't really think it's your place to call anyone out for it.

She isn't calling anyone out. She is making a point. This is her personal spot to RANT and RAVE. I think that's been made pretty clear before. Also, I think most of us older players agree with her in regards to multi-colored posts are a bit overdone.

Graders Please Note :
As Ball is getting closer and closer to maxing out Pyken as a skill, I would like to request that in places where Ball is not doing enough to constitute Pyken XP if Pyken technique lores could be issued instead.

Examples of proper XP level for Pyken would be: Ball developing or refining his technique by adding new thing against an actual moving target, not a dummy.

The use of basic skills alone are not enough to accomplish XP at Ball's current level of Pyken.

Thank you.

I will be handling all Ball related posts on Mondays @ 1800 my time *

I don't tell people how to think. I tell people how I THINK. If you are not okay with my thought processes, its not my business. My business is how I feel. But I do think its ironic that you judge me for my thought process (and say that you are by your harsh critical response) and yet at the same time ask me to not judge you for your words.

*laughs*

You can't have it both ways. People make judgements all the time. The only baseline readers/writers have to form opinions on sites like this is what someone else writes. Writers are opinionated by their very nature. You can't escape it.

Geez I didn't realize I so easily "submitted" to the idea of another either. I had thought I highlighted the fact that I literally agreed with her opinion, that is can in fact another way of writing in a lazy form. It does in fact pose problem when others will skim posts quickly because of color coded dialogue, so naturally I think it easiest to resolve it by cutting back on it.

I understand your intent in expressing your own opinion, but vaguely enjoy how quickly you jumped to conclusions on the subject in truth.

Miz isn't full of sheep. Rarely do they pay me much mind when I'm ranting unless it's something that maybe bugs them too. Ricky for example does unique things and has set trends before. He doesn't do it intentionally nor are all of them bad trends. He's done some fantastic stuff. I wouldn't say he's submitting to anything just because he pipes up and agrees. Should I hold him accountable for all the folks I think are lazy? Heck no. It's a writers rpg though. I want folks to express themselves in their writing not in their eyebleeding text color. It feels reasonable to me.

I believe this is the part where I go along and say that I should probably just go out and do a bunch of threads to earn XP for singing and an instrument, so I can bring 'La vida loca' to the four corners of Miza? :P Or should I hang my head in shame for neglecting to foresee the consequences with him as my face claim when I first joined?

Postby Clyde Sullins on March 30th, 2016, 2:15 pm

Mmm... So what I get from this rant, is that Clyde should rp with these people, and while speaking nicely to them, commit heinous criminal acts against them with my actual done actions. But since they are only reading my spoken words, they won't notice.

Thanks for the ideas! |:)

I think someone is going to be in for a surprise when the grade comes in, and they find I've looted all of their mizas and cut off all of their odd toes on their right foot, for Magic use of course.

*goes off to make a new template with lots of colorings*
Clydes Stuff

I am actually in RL a super intelligent hamster from Rhode Island, with a 7 year plan to take over the world.

Update 6/2/18- 1:10AM EST: His 7 year plan a success, and several weeks ahead of schedule, Clyde leaves to oversee the world he has taken over.

No new threads after end of Spring 518-Will still be checking for PM's occasionally, but focusing on a new character.

Graders note: :
Please be aware Clyde is a master Magecrafter. He therefore should not be gaining full xp(or possibly shouldn't gain any at all) for simple tasks related to this magic, such as low level MC items, particularly for repetitions of creations he has done before. Feel free to contact me if unsure of a instance of his magic use compared to his skill level.
