The Olidosapux Pt.1

Postby Ixzo on March 22nd, 2016, 7:33 pm

2nd of Spring, 516AV

Bells past when she would have normally found at least some prey, Ixzo remained without any results for her hunting. The lioness decided to start by tracking a pack of wild dogs, hoping they would lead her to fertile hunting grounds, but only met them at their kill sight. Not wanting to engage, she had to skirt much further around her preferable hunting grounds than she would have liked.

Even after that, the night had yielded poor results. Having decided not to go with her bow, Ixzo was prowling through the grasses alone the northern end of where Endrykas currently stayed. Aggravation kept her weariness at bay. She was a good hour away from the city now, enjoying the cover the tall grasses and hills provided, but there was only so much she could do. Hunting rabbits in this form was near impossible, no one would want them anyway. Birds were getting easier, but she had just given the Allegiance three quails the day before.

The wind picked up, carrying her scent to the east, and telling her of the gazelle to the west. Slowing, Ixzo considered it. The hills obscured her view of the tantalizing scent, although she knew they were there. For her, Gazelle were not a particularly challenging hunt. She had bagged one early in the season, although the lioness tried not to give such dirty kills. She preferred her bow for the faster animals. Abandoning the thought, Ixzo kept walking. In the bright moonlight of the night, she noticed when she passed under the tree. She likely would have noticed anyway, since they were exceedingly rare in the plains.

Without hesitating, Ixzo turned towards the long tree, balancing back on her hind legs briefly, Ixzo fell forward onto the bark. With the most satisfying sensation, she climbed up the tree slightly with her front claws. Then, with immense strength, but seemingly leisure, Ixzo dragged her large paws down the side of the tree. The pull on her claws felt wonderful and the marks she left on the tree, heavy with the scent of her paws, was satisfying.

Once she was done, Ixzo turned back, giving herself a few yards. Turning back around, kthe lioness bounded forward with the lithe power of the hunt. But instead of prey under her weight, she dug her claws into the tree, using momentum to hoist herself up to the first branch. She felt the momentum leave her, but just in time to swipe an arm out, hooking it over the thick branches of the tree. Using her hold, Ixzo pulled herself upright, repositioning to lie on the tree. She had been hunting all night and caught nothing. Any energy she had was nearly zapped and she still had hours before sunrise. The idea of snoozing in the tree was incredibly tempting, even if she never slept at this time.

The Olidosapux Pt.1

Postby Ixzo on March 22nd, 2016, 7:34 pm

Although she had intended to climb the tree in search of the herd of Gazelle she had smelled, the huntress found her eyes opening to the sunrise. She wanted to just go back to sleep with the sudden overwhelming defeat that washed over her. Days, or more accurately, nights, like these happened on occasion. She had gotten familiar enough with the plains now that there were not so many failed nights, but she always hated it when they did.

She was about to really give in, when she heard something below her. To her surprise, she recognized the lumbering creatures beneath her. An Olidosapux. For only an instant, the lioness seized with fear. She was not so stupid to think that she was at the top of the food chain like the humans. Even being honest, an Olidosapux had no interest in her for a meal, but the creatures were massive. And when they wanted to be, dangerous.

But the panic lasted for only a second as the lioness scrambled to her feet. In a quick, agile move she sprung her feet up from where they dangled over the branch, tucking them under herself to better balance on the branch. More alert than before, Ixzo watched the creatures below her for a few moments.

She counted eight of the captivating creatures. Two seemed to be bulls, their large size and thick horns giving them away. She would steer clear of those. Between them there were three more females and then one calf to each female.

The Olidosapux Pt.1

The thoughts stopped her for a moment. Was she actually planning on hunting these massive creatures? The smallest calf was easily twice her size, these were not prey… Or where they?

Even being so big, they'd not noticed her, or perhaps they didn't care. She had a bit of an advantage in the shade of the tree she laid in. It was familiar to her, hunting from trees. As a kit, it was her advantage against the small hogs and monkeys in the trees. Yet it had been so long since she'd hunted this way…

Ixzo pushed her energy back into her thighs, her shoulders wavering back and forth as she sized up her prey. This huntress had never thought things out thoroughly, which was why she hunted with her weapons rather than traps. Yet, she did her best to push off the dread that filled her chest at the prospect of what would happen if she could not take one of the juveniles down in time.

It was then that hey prey wandered close enough. She still clung close to her mother's side, still too young to risk walking too far away, but far enough away to give Ixzo a chance. Not using as much strength, Ixzo stepped off the branch, positioning her paws beneath her to land square on the calf's back.

But she had underestimated her ability and the creatures she hunted. The tree she was on was thick and sturdy, having stood alone for so long, yet when she lept from the branch, the new spring leaves gave her position away. Noise, sight and scent flooded the area, warning her prey of her presence. This would not have been so bad, if the Olidosapux were actually as slow as she anticipated. The calf that she should have landed on was out of her way by the time she was in view. Suddenly seeing the hard earth as her landing strip, the lioness tugged her elbows in, making sure her legs bent when she landed.

It still hurt, but Ixzo rolled to the side as soon as she hit the hard grass, trying to fend off some of the impact.

The Olidosapux Pt.1

It still took the lioness a moment to reclaim her breath, struggled to straighten her feet under her, and by the time all for paws were square on the ground, her prey was nearly gone. Not giving up, Ixzo bound forward as well. When she reached the end of the space where they had grazed down the tall grass, she was forced to slow. Anger fueled her at this. She was not a very fast huntress in the first place, relying on her strength and stealth rather than her speed. But the anger was not enough to sustain the already tired lioness. It was in the taller grass where the Olidosapux had the advantage, large feet to trample any resistance, an advantage she didn't have.

Ixzo only gave herself a few chimes before she slowed, forced by the necessity to breathe. Angered with herself, Ixzo turned around, peering over the grass. The herd wasn't much faster than her, so she could easily see their retreating figures, defeat settling in.

After a few chimes of brooding, the lioness glanced up at the sun. She had to find her way back, Iollu would be awake already. Likely caring for the Ox, that stupid creature. For only a brief moment, the lioness considered taking down the only creature that wasn’t scared of her, but what for? The meat might be worth more than what she paid for the dumb beast, but not nearly as priority as a good game hunt. The Hunter's Allegiance wanted meat they could sell, pelts they could keep. Since the people of Endrykas wanted fresh game, an Ox would be stupid. Anyway, Ixzo had too much pride to deliver such a poor excuse, even if she hated the animal.

It would have been nice to bring back an Olidosapux.

Keeping the now risen sun to her left, Ixzo returned to the south of the city. She was expecting to meet the kill sight of the wild dogs from earlier. Had they cleaned their kill so quickly? Surely not. A brief panic that she was lost seized her chest, until she saw the tree she had climbed. How far had she run? How much energy had she wasted? Today had been a horrible day for hunting. She had passed up smaller prey earlier, overconfident. Then she had underestimated her chosen prey, and her fatigue had made her clumsy. But Ixzo couldn't be mad for too long. Yes, she had wasted the night, but she knew better. And there was a new determination to bring an Olidosapux down eventually, to prove to herself that she could do it. As she trekked back towards Endrykas, the goal was settling itself firmly in her subconscious, she was going to take down an Olidosapux… soon.
