Siiri stuffed the rest of the jerky in her mouth, chewing vigorously as she nodded to Seyp. The meat tasted human - salty. Rather than just discard her light meal's dried leaf wrapper, she rolled it up into a small ball and dumped it into the many pockets of her pack. She knew the many predators of the jungle had a heightened sense of smell, and throwing away her litter on the jungle floor could lead those predators to her tail even with the heavy rain washing away any lignering scent of the meat from the wrapper. She couldn't risk exposing their camp to anything; it would tip off the Kithskin of their presence.
"Lead on," she told the shaman as she handed her pack to Miharu for the Kelvic to look after. She nodded in appreciation at Seyp's precaution as he retraced his steps back to the Kithskin troupe. At least the wilderness survival lessons taught during the mandatory three years in the army still stuck to the man. She knew of some Myrians who have left the army after their service and immediately forgot about such things, as if they would not use such skills any more. Silly people.
Siiri followed in the shaman's steps, planting each foot over the spot where Seyp's had just vacated, to hide their numbers. Slayer she pulled free from her back to stop the sound it made as the blade bumped against her buttocks. She held it with the blade pointed behind her, one hand on the ricasso to hold it steady, the other hand near the pommel to control its swinging as she moved, much like a boatman would control his steering pole or oar. The weapon hardly hampered her and she paced Seyp easily.
As the shaman shared his thoughts about their targets, Siiri merely grunted. She couldn't form an opinion until she saw the beasts. Once they were on the muddy ground hidden from sight and Seyp had pointed out the Alpha, Siiri had to suppress a disgusted snort lest she reveal their location to the creatures.
The Alpha was enormous.
It had a primate's frame, with its longer arms and stubby legs, but its eyes seemed much more possessed of intelligence. And while it wasn't so large that it would be a plodding beast, as Siiri watched it in its motions she could tell it was quick. Not as quick as the reflex of a jungle cat perhaps, but just enough that it could decently defend itself from threats. Coupled with the power that surely lay underneath the corded muscles of its stocky limbs, the Alpha Kithskin looked like it would prove more than a match for any one of the Myrians.
"Big bastard, isn't he?" Siiri muttered. She scanned the rest of the troupe, noting the defensive positions of the two other males and the behavior of the rest. Most seemed to be feeding off the fruit trees. "They have several young. Good."
Crooking her finger for Seyp to follow her, Siiri retreated back to the path leading to their camp. After a good enough distance to ensure that they would not be detected by the Kithskin anymore, she stood up and immediately began wiping off the mud from Slayer with her hand as she walked.
"Your plan is bold," she commended. "But I see two problems: one, we're only afforded a very short window to slay your beast before he can retreat, and, two, we'll be sacrificing our proficiency in fighting on solid ground if we choose to engage it in the trees."
Siiri looked up and pointed at the dense canopy of branches and leaves above them - thick enough to alter the course of a crossbow shot or snag the blades of their weapons.
"We need to keep it down and make sure it stays there." Pulling her greatsword close, she inspected its edge to make sure it was grime-free. "You're not going to need the bones in its neck, are you? No? Good.
"Here is my plan: we get one of its young as bait. We shouldn't target the slower and older ones as the troupe will just leave it when they know they can't rescue it - an eventual casualty in nature's game of survival of the fittest. But with the young, the Alpha is much more likely to rescue and defend it, both to garner the favor of its females for future mating and to ensure the survival of its kind."
She gestured at Seyp's unique weapon. "You can trap it with that and the Konti's blades can assist in subduing it afterwards. When the Alpha comes for it, we deal with it as soon as possible."
Eventually, they arrived back in camp and Siiri ordered everyone to settle in for a longer wait that was anticipated. She returned to Seyp's side once everyone was busy with their assigned tasks guarding the perimeter or preparing their makeshift meals. She had agreed with the shaman that he can take as much as three days observing the beast but anything longer and their camp might attract unwanted attention for the other predators of the jungle.
"We'll only have one problem then: the rest of the troupe might come after us. Pua could serve as cover, and I have a trick to keep them at bay, for a while at least. But we need to take out the Alpha as soon as possible to deter the rest from overrunning us..."
Apologies to everyone I'm threading with, but it's like the Danaides for me right now.==/==
