9th Bell, Morning

Seirei watched Lukar and Lira play absently as she twisted a handful of rags anxiously. She was over two months late. Sixty three days had passed since...Seirei shuddered, and tried to repress the memories of agony, terror, and shame that threatened to overwhelm her. Even now, those memories had the power to hurt her, and to shred her slowly increasing confidence. She suspected that they always would.

Several chimes passed before Seirei managed to push the memories back. But growing dread lingered in their wake. She was late, and there was a very unwelcome explanation for that. She had gone through this once before, and she had been pregnant then, too. Seirei knew that stress could still be the cause. If that were the case, she could have her period at any time. And yet...deep down, she didn't think that that was the reason. She could blame it on the fact that her period had always been irregular, but that was just an excuse. It also wouldn't explain the fact that her belly was just the slightest bit bigger than it should be. Most people who didn't know her well wouldn't notice it. Even she could barely tell the difference. It was easy to convince herself that she was just seeing things. That was what she wanted...needed to believe. But she couldn't be sure. And she needed to know for certain one way, or the other.

With that thought in mind, Seirei slowly made her way to the River Flower. The weather had been strange the past few days, with frequent, but very short, sharp rain showers. They seemed to occur every half bell, and each one only lasted for a few ticks. The mini storms were so regular that they could be predicted. Unfortunately, Seirei was so worried about what she was going to learn that she mistimed her trip, and got caught in one. Like the others, it only lasted for a few ticks, but that was long enough to soak both her and the twins.

As a result, she was cold and wet as she began the search for her friend. She just hoped that Waisana would be there. Her experiences with other healers had been bad enough that if Waisana wasn't around, she would leave, and come back in a day or so to try again.

Confirming an Unwanted Truth (Pearl)

Pearl worked with the dried Dandelion root in her office, chopping it with a small knife and separating it into the paper packets she had prepared and waiting on her desk. Each one she labeled clearly and carefully with the words dandelion root with her ink stick. Pearl was humming as she worked, some odd little song she had heard Dravite singing at one point. Even though she couldn’t recall the words, simply humming the tune of it caused her to smile.

This season had, so far, not been an easy one on the young doctor, but she was determined to make the best of it, regardless. The rains of the past few days had kept her indoors more than she had liked, but the time inside had also given her a chance to get caught up on storing and processing some medicines for use during the colder months to come.

Star poked her head in and asked, “Do you have any blankets or towels in here? We have a few people that got caught in the rains and they’re dripping all over everything.”
The way Star said it caused Pearl to chuckle as she nodded, “Yes, a few, just over there,” she indicated. “Help yourself.”
“Thanks,” replied Star as she walked over to the table and gathered up an arm full of the towels. “Have you seen Waisana lately?”
“Don’t think I know a Waisana?” came Pearl’s reply.
“Oh, alright. I hadn’t seen her around yet today and was curious. A few people are asking for her by name.”
“Well, if I can help, you know I will. Just let me know.”
“Knew I could count on you,” Star smiled and left with the armload of towels.

She went about offering the towels to those that looked as if they needed them and stopped at the young woman with the twins, all three of them dripping wet. “You look like you could use a hand here,” Star spoke to her and held out a towel to the woman. “Mind if I help you with the babies?” she offered, waiting for permission from the mother before she touched her children.

Seirei accepted the towel with a shy smile, and a very sincere thank you. She started to use it to dry Lukar off, but before she could, a woman asked if she could help with the twins. Her wariness of healers she didn't know warred very briefly with common sense, and lost. Seirei nodded, and gave the woman a grateful look.

"Yes, please. And thank you for offering." she said softly.

Seirei shifted Lira into a position that would hopefully be easier for the other woman to dry her off more. Then she used the towel she had been offered to dry Lukar off as best she could. Only when he had been seen to did she use the damp towel to attempt to get the worst of the water off of her as well.

It seemed as though no one knew where Waisana was, or even if she was working today. That left Seirei with a difficult choice. She didn't know if she could trust another healer enough to let them examine her. After the experience she had had with other healers, she was deeply wary of them. She was a former captive. Would the healers treat her like a Drykas since she was one now? Or would they resent her freedom since she used to be a captive? Would they say she had stolen her strider as Lian had at first? What if they tried to punish her?

Seirei would feel a lot more comfortable if Waisana was the one to examine her. But she really didn't want to expose her children to this uncertain weather any more than she already had if there was any other choice. She was already here. Would it be better to wait and come back another time, or should she see if anyone was available now? She really didn't want to be a bother to anyone...especially to someone who might resent her for being a Drykas now when she used to be a captive. After hesitating for several ticks, Seirei gathered her courage, and made her decision.

"Um...I'm sorry if I am inconveniencing anyone by coming here. I think...there's a chance...a pretty good chance that I...I might be pregnant." she said softly, her hands twisting anxiously as she spoke.

"Waisana has helped me before, and she knows me. Would it be better if I came back another time and saw her? It's just that...with all the rain we've been having recently, I don't want to risk bringing them out in this more than I have to."

She signed a "sincere apology for being a burden," and an "understanding if they were too busy."

Star helped get the twins dried and settled back with their mother before she spoke again. “Oh nonsense,” she said with lightness in her voice that showed her sincerity as she tried to ease the woman’s concerns, “we’re here to help and you’re not being a burden or an inconvenience. I don’t know where Waisana is, but I’m sure Pearl could help you. She’s as nice as they come. Young, but she’s one of the best doctors we have here at the River Flower.” Star was picking up wet towels as she talked. “New babies are so exciting. Pearl and I love babies. She has a little one, two now actually, since she got married. You bring these precious little ones with you and we’ll go to her office now,” Star didn’t wait for the young woman to refuse.

She held open the door to Pearl’s office, talking to them both, “Pearl, there’s a young lady here that needs your assistance. Sorry, I didn’t get your name, dove?” she looked at Seirei for a tick and then continued, “but she’s thinking she might be expecting more precious little bundles of joy.” Star helped Seirei and the twins get settled into the office.

The smile on Pearl’s face brightened just a touch at seeing the young woman and the twins. She studied the twins for a few ticks, taking in their size and coloring, checking only for their appearance in that they were well fed and cared for. She could see that they definitely were for they looked healthy, and their eyes were bright and shining, taking in their surroundings as well. She cooed at them and made a little scrunched up face at them, and smiled more when they responded with little gurgles and smiles of their own.

Pleased that the twins appeared to be in good health by appearances and responses only, she looked up to Seirei and took note of the woman’s apparent shyness. “I’m Pearl,” she introduced herself. “Tell me a bit about you, the babies, and the newest addition you may be expecting?” Pearl hoped that Seirei might relax a little as she talked about herself and then they could get to the examination and confirmation of if she was indeed pregnant.

Seirei had mixed feelings when the woman helping her told her that another healer was available. She was very nervous about seeing someone other that Waisana. Her experiences in the past with healers other than her friend had not been good ones. But that was back when she had been a captive. People in general seemed to accept her now. Gone were the scorn, and distrust. Gone were ridicule, and dark looks. So perhaps the other healers would treat her better, too. Seirei wasn't certain that she trusted the apparent change of heart people showed her. She understood that bonding to a strider was a very important thing in the eyes of the Drykas people. But it seemed strange to her that things would change so much so quickly. And Seirei couldn't help but wonder if they wouldn't change back just as quickly.

Still, Seirei had the twins to consider. They shouldn't be exposed to this weather more than absolutely necessary. What if they got sick because of it? And the Pearl that the woman spoke of did sound nice. The talk of Pearl liking children, and having children of her own decided it for Seirei. So she smiled, and thanked the woman, allowing her to bring her into Pearl's office.

It was probably a good thing that the other woman had taken control so completely. Seirei wasn't at all certain that she would have been able to bring herself to seek out a healer she didn't know without her to make it happen. Seirei's anxiety threatened to overwhelm her, but she managed to work through it by focusing completely on the task immediately in front of her. When asked for her name, Seirei flushed, and stammered an apology. She should have remembered to offer her name first.

"I'm Seirei." she said quietly.

The healer...Pearl eased some of Seirei's anxiety when she took a few ticks to check the twins over. She really must like children if she was willing to give a complete stranger's children a once over to make sure they were not sick even though they were not her patients. When Pearl introduced herself, Seirei smiled shyly, and introduced herself again. It was an automatic response to an introduction, and Seirei felt a bit silly afterwards, having had introduced herself mere chimes before. But she was nervous enough that she was she couldn't really do anything else. Doing what was expected of her was hopefully the best way not to anger anyone.

Follow the rules, and she wouldn't be punished. It had worked with her captor, after all. He had only punished her when she defied him by not submitting to being raped, or if she managed to anger him some how. When the men raped her last summer, they had been "punishing" her for not being pregnant. She was a captive back then, and in their eyes, her only use was as a brood mare, breeding children for their people. Most Drykas she had encountered as a captive had felt that way. So by not being pregnant, she wasn't following the rules. She was being defiant, and deserved to be punished in their eyes. Even if it wasn't her fault that her captor hadn't started trying to get her pregnant again. Seirei didn't know why he hadn't tried to breed her after she gave birth to the twins. She had been too afraid to ask for fear that he would start raping her again. She was just thankful that he had left her alone.

Answering the healer's other questions were harder, but Seirei tried her best to answer them all the same.

"My father is a Drykas, but my mother was not, and I grew up in her trade caravan. I'm a woodcarver like she was when she was alive. I was captured roughly a year and a half ago, by a man named Lian Windrunner. He's the father of these two." Seirei said, gesturing at the twins.

The signs that accompanied her words said that she had had no choice about bearing her children, but that she loved them despite the way they were created, and that she couldn't imagine life without them anymore. Seirei didn't think that the twins would understand the concept of rape, but she hesitated saying the word out loud in their presence all the same. She dreaded the day they were old enough to learn about the fate of captives in Endrykas and realized that she had been a captive when they were born. Seirei didn't love them any less for the way Lian had forced himself on her, but she was afraid that Lukar and Lira would think that she did.

"He isn't the father of the child I might be carrying now, though."

Her signs suggested that she hoped that she was wrong about being pregnant, but that she feared that she wasn't.

"After I gave birth to Lukar and Lira, Lian left me alone. I was grateful for that...but others were angry. People knew I was a captive, of course, and they thought I was defying them...defying my...my captor by not getting pregnant again. Last summer, I went to the edge of the city to gather grass to practice weaving. A group of men saw me, and decided I was trying to escape. I wasn't. I won't lie and say I enjoyed being a captive. But I knew that if I tried to escape, I would either be caught, and punished, or I would die out in the Sea of Grass. And I wasn't desperate enough to risk that. Nor would I have abandoned my children even if I had been."

Seirei glanced nervously at Pearl. Would the healer believe her? She truly hadn't been trying to escape that day. She had had hopes of escaping in the future...but not until she had the means and skills to survive such an attempt. And she wouldn't have left her children behind when she was ready to make the attempt.

"They didn't believe me...and I don't know that it would have mattered if they had. I was a captive, and they felt I was defying my captor because I wasn't pregnant. So they decided to punish me."

Seirei shuddered. She couldn't help it. Even now, she had nightmares most nights about being brutally raped by those men.

"If I am really pregnant...I don't know who the father is. There were several men, and it could have been any of them." she said at last."

Then, because she wanted to clarify the issue, she continued speaking.

"A few days after that, I visited the silver chest. Thunder, my strider was given to me that day. And his mother came to claim him ticks after he appeared in the chest." she said softly.

Would this healer believe that she had stolen the striders somehow as Lian had? Would she be angry at Seirei for bonding to a strider, and becoming more than a captive? Seirei didn't know how the other woman would react. And that not knowing made her nervous.

Before she had a chance to find out, a young man rushed into the room. He was scolded firmly for barging interrupting an exam, but annoyance soon turned to concern as he began babbling something about a badly injured child that needed immediate help. The healer rushed out of the room quickly. Seirei couldn't blame her. A badly injured Drykas child's need was both greater, and more urgent that her own. She could wait. The child might not be able to. There was this to consider as well. A Drykas child was much more important than a former captive.

The woman who had brought her to see the healer promised that she would send another healer in to see her as soon as she could. Then she too, was gone. Seirei didn't have to wait long. Unfortunately, the healer that entered the room was one she had seen in the past. The older woman gestured for her to tell her what why she was there, and Seirei obeyed. As she did, she wondered if the healer even recognized her.

"Do I know you?" the healer asked abruptly, with a puzzled frown after Seirei had explained the reason for her visit.

Seirei shook her head.

"Not really. But you examined me once when I was pregnant with Lukar and Lira." she said softly.

The healer gave a cursory glance at the twins before turning her attention back to Seirei. Seirei resisted the urge not to flinch under the woman's intent gaze, but it was a near thing. Finally, the woman's eyes widened.

"I think I remember you, now. You were the captive that dared to claim friendship with a real person. From what you've told me, your captor may have finally succeeded in breeding you again?"

Seirei shook her head again.

"This child...if I am pregnant, isn't his. And I'm not a captive anymore, either." she said softly, but firmly.

The woman frowned. She looked as though she wanted to protest, but Seirei didn't give her the chance.

"I bonded to a strider last summer. So I am not a captive anymore."

The healer's eyes widened again. After a few ticks, she nodded.

"Congratulations. I apologize for treating you the way I did, then."

The healer examined her briskly. It was just as uncomfortable as the last exam the woman had given her had been. But the older woman's attitude towards her was considerably different. She made no attempt to be friendly as the first healer she'd seen today had, but she was professional. And she did attempt to reassure her during the worst parts of the exam. Seirei got the feeling that the older woman was embarrassed, and every bit as uncomfortable as she was with the situation.

When the healer told her she could get dressed, Seirei did so gratefully.

"You were right." the healer said at last.

"You are a little over two months pregnant. I assume that I don't need to tell you that you will need regular exams to monitor the pregnancy?"

Seirei shook her head. The healer nodded in satisfaction. Then she hesitated for a few ticks, as if uncertain whether the news of her pregnancy was good news or not. Finally, she left without saying another word. Dread nearly overwhelmed Seirei as she gathered up the twins, and made her way home. Now that she knew for certain that she was pregnant, she was going to have to tell Naiya, and Shahar. She already had two children. What if a third was too much of a burden for her friends? What would she do if she had to leave the Dawnwhisper pavilion now that she was about to be even more of a burden than she already was? Her thoughts were deeply troubled as she made her way home slowly, trying to decide how she could tell Naiya and Shahar that she was pregnant.
