Where the visitors stay...

(This is a thread from Mizahar's fantasy role playing forums. Why don't you register today? This message is not shown when you are logged in. Come roleplay with us, it's fun!)

This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

Unique in all of Mizahar, the Traveler's Complex defies all labels one would try to pin on such an establishment. It is simultaneously an inn, a supply depot, a market, a warehouse, and much more. Within its massive walls are all of the things that any visitor could ever want or need. Which is good, because they're not allowed anywhere else.

For all arrivals by land in Kenash, the first stop is without exception the Traveler's Complex. It is the only place in the city where one can find services for caravan maintenance and resupply, as well as the only structure aside from the coach services that can fit a number of vehicles at once without causing much disturbance. From there, visitors are directed toward the interior of the Traveler's Complex, either through the main entryway facing the rest of the city or through one of the side entrances positioned closer to the stables.

After passing into the complex proper, one will enter an interior cobblestone courtyard which acts as a common area for all of the business and fronts that have set up shop there. The eclectic structure is an assortment of brick and wood walls that enclose a rather pretty space, decorated with potted plants and other such visual appeals. A variety of storefronts line the interior, and each one offers high-quality Kenashian goods to the weary traveler. The most prominent of these are the Rest House and the Visitor's Inventory - the lodgings and general store respectively. There are also a number of empty storefronts available for purchase to those Freeborn interested in operating their own business within the Traveler's Complex, though it should be noted the clientele is guaranteed to be exclusively visitors.

While the courtyard itself is very pleasant to look at, the high and imposing walls of the complex offer no ambiguity to the purpose of constraining visitors to the area. The Traveler's Complex is beautiful to be sure, but it is still an area made to restrict all non-citizens from the city. Woe awaits the visitor who wanders too far from beyond the confines of the structure.

The Rest House
Image
Positioned near the entrance to the interior courtyard of the Traveler's Complex, the Den is currently the only place that offers lodgings to non-citizens. The inviting entrance opens into a small pub where the bar also acts as the service counter where one can purchase rooms. While the quality of the goods and services offered are very good comparative to standards elsewhere in Mizahar, they are intentionally left quite short of the quality one can observe in the rest of Kenash.

The rooms are all of uniform design - same size, same shape, same furniture. Each one has a window that has a nice view of the city of Kenash, its bridges and squares and luxuries, to further tempt tourists into the status of a Freeborn.

For those who remain unmarked for longer than thirty days, however, the Rest House suddenly becomes the worst trap to fall into. Those who have yet to become Freeborn on their thirty first night often find themselves waking up deep in the bowels of the auction house. A letter from the owner to Marshal Sitai is all it takes for the unwelcome to become enslaved. Naturally, all of the unwelcome's former possessions are given to the owner, as well as the proceeds of the purchase.

The Visitors Inventory

Perhaps the only true 'general' store in Kenash, the stock of the Inventory is as varied as the people that shop there. It sells everything from horse tack to pitchers, from lamps to cheap trinkets. While the wares - and the shop itself - likely wouldn't survive long out in the city proper, it is more than sufficient for catering to the weary traveler or the dumbstruck tourist. That isn't to say that the items of low quality - quite to the contrary, simply that the presentation of the wares lacks the refinement usually expected in Kenash. Here and there are the occasional items that would be serviceable in the city proper, but they are also appropriately priced, meant to stimulate the desire to venture out and see what Kenash can truly offer.

After entering the main door, one will find themselves on one side of a long room. In the middle of said room is a row of shelves and counters and other methods of display that stretch from the front to the back. To the right of the entrance, opposite the many wares for sale, is the sales counter where purchases are made.

A wide variety of items on the Price List are available at listed price.

Name: Amelie Darana
Race: Human
DoB: 50th of Spring, 488AV
PoB: Kenash
Title: Manager of the Rest House
Skills:
Business 44
Cooking 37
Negotiation 28
Additional Info: Often described as kind by those who meet her, Amelie's friendly demeanor belies that business-savvy Kenashern spirit that every Freeborn must have to make it in the city. While she often tries to be as friendly as she can to her guests, she cannot help but seize opportunities when they arise, and woe to those unmarked travelers who overstay their welcome in her establishment. The one person she is unconditionally friendly to is Dressa, the owner of the Visitor's Inventory, whom she grew up with.

The dynasties of Kenash were around long before the city, and the city long before the Traveler's Complex, and the complex long before the Rest House. It was the brainchild of Amelie's ancestor when she first arrived in Kenash, and has been in the Darana family ever since. Amelie herself served as her mother's assistant as a child, along with the Dhani Dressankossa who they'd taken in. When the Rest House fell to her, Amelie did little to take the establishment in new directions, content to fulfill its role as a temporary stop for those visiting the city. However, there is one particular development she has implemented that has been earning her a good deal of mizas on the side. Those unmarked patrons who overstay their welcome invariably stay at the Rest House, and as such Amelie is the first to know. A deal with Marhsal Sitai means that he gets the slave as perfectly untouched product, and Amelie gets their mizas in worth. Along with any remaining possessions.

Name: Dressankossa
Race: Dhani, Constrictor
DoB: 85th of Winter, 413AV
PoB: Zinrah
Title: Shopkeeper of the Visitor's Inventory
Skills:
Negotiation 40
Wrestling 37
Business 23
Additional Info: Owner of the Visitor's Inventory, Dressa has little of the bubbly kindness that has come to characterize Amelie. She is generally welcoming of customers, but in a very stern and stoic manner. On the one hand she is happy to help those who are looking for something; on the other she is quick to snap at those who are just window shopping. One of her favorite pastimes is terrifying newcomers with stories of enslavement for those who remain unmarked. While she can be two-faced when it comes to the guests, she is genuinely loyal to Amelie, whom she regards as her sister.

The Dhani's childhood is one of blurry instincts and half-memories. Abstract recollections of frustration, escape, panic, desperation, and finally relief. She arrived in Kenash penniless and with no plan for her future, and it was in this state that Amelie's mother took her in under the condition she help manage the Rest House. Dressa did so happily, and during her job grew up alongside Amelie, to the point where the two are siblings in all but blood. When the previous owner of the Visitor's Inventory was looking to leave Kenash, Dressa was encouraged to purchase the shop at the behest of Amelie, who was interested in seeing her closest friend manage her own business. Being a shopkeeper doesn't come as naturally to Dressa as being an innkeeper does to Amelie, but the Dhani does her best in her role. She is always happy to help Amelie bounce her more troublesome customers as well.

The Traveler's Complex

Postby Valerius Nitrozian on March 8th, 2016, 3:34 pm

Spring 1, 516 AV

The Traveller’s Complex was Valerius’ first stop in Kenash. The merchant he had travelled with had stopped there for maintenance and resupply, and since he needed a room, he had decided to stay there as well. The place wasn’t too bad, he supposed, although he was used to better things from his time in Ravok. That there was also a shop was definitely a good thing though. It meant that he wouldn’t have to walk into the city all the time when he needed to buy something.

“I’d like to rent a room for ten days”, he informed the manager of the Rest House. The woman didn’t have the looks of a noble, of a dynasty member. She was probably a Freeborn, just like he would soon be.

While he waited for her reply, he took a look around. Again, the Rest House didn’t look too bad. The furniture was of comparatively good quality, everything was clean, and the people that stayed there seemed to behave for the most part. He had seen much better in Ravok though.

“I will eat somewhere else”, he added and handed her the 10 golden mizas that the room would cost. The Rest House offered cheap meals as well, but Valerius preferred to eat at a proper restaurant or sometimes just buy a snack that he ate during a break.

He briefly contemplated whether a season would be enough to make himself known to the city and properly establish his business, and then decided that it probably would. He would most likely be able to move out of the Rest House and buy a house of his own come Summer.

The Traveler's Complex

Postby Millie on April 17th, 2016, 3:15 pm

79th Spring, 516 AV
18th bell

The caravan moved along somewhere else in the building, presumably to unload, but Millie moved forwards and followed her nose until she found the place that had been pointed out to her- The Rest House.

It was so strange, she thought, how she wasn't completely surrounded by stone. That was what Syliras was like, after all. She'd never known any different. But this place was open, and although it had buildings, she would be able to see the sky. At least, when it wasn't covered with cloud and wraiths of mist.

Tentatively pushing open the door, she soon found a woman who seemed to be in control, discussing something with the leader of the caravan. Millie stood quietly by whilst waiting for them to finish. As soon as they had, she stepped forwards.

"Would it be possible for me to get a room for the night?"

The other woman looked friendly, and Millie offered a tired smile in return. "I'm Amelie, welcome to The Rest House. How long are you looking to stay?"

Millie blanched slightly, she honestly didn't have a clue. With a slight shrug, the girl simply said, "Could I pay for a night now, and then in the morning let you know?" Amelie frowned, and Millie looked at her worriedly, hoping she wouldn't have to look for somehwere else. She'd never travelled before, she wasn't sure where else she could go.

Thankfully, she simply shook her head and stuck her hand out, asking for 2 GM. The woman fished in her pocket, and felt the worryingly small amount of mizas that resided there. But she quickly drew out two gold mizas, proffering them to Amelie with a short smile.

After that was a blur, the introduction to the room, the instructions on when to come down and let her know what she was doing, the referral to something to do with 'Freeborn' status... She soon had the woman out and the room to herself.

With a deep sigh, Millie dropped her coat on the floor, deposited her bag safely underneath it and dropped down onto the bed. In the next few ticks, she was asleep.

Graders: Don't bother giving grades to Millie, as I am waiting for this character to be retired! Thank you :)
