3rd Day of Spring, 516 AV
Eighth bell of Morning
Dawnwhisper pavilion

The morning had dawned, and after a night of poor sleep, Naiya had decided that there was little point in skipping her morning hunt afterall. She was awake anyway, she may as well use the morning.

The morning still held the chill of the season past, and so she dressed in her breeches and tossed the wolf pelt vest over her breasts. It was warm enough that way, for the Drykas woman to ride without getting too hot as the day warmed.

She pulled her yvas and grooming kit from the travois, bring both to settle beside her strider. Greetings she signed to him as she alerted to her approach. He nickered softly, awake.

She ran a currycomb across Wildfire's back, loosening dirt and hair before shifting to run along the line of his neck and shoulders where the yvas would sit. She brushed the loosened dirt away with her brush, sending dust flying into the dark morning sky. She ran her fingers across his body, seeking bumps, ticks, or wounds, finding none she ran hands over his legs, feeling for warmth or swelling. Again she found none, so she asked him to lift his hoof with a light squeeze of his lower leg, and she used a hoof pick to remove dirt and grass from his feet.

She dropped the gear back in the bucket, taking it all back to the travois where she retrieved her yvas pad. This she tucked beneath her arm, making her wa back over to Wildfire who had begun to graze. Tacking up was a familiar process for him, and Naiya was able to let him eat while she worked, slipping the pad into place. He only had to lift his head a moment for her to place the yvas on, and then she was gone again to fetch her bag and the yvas bags.

She returned with bow, quiver, spear, and all of her travel gear. There was no sense in leaving it behind even if she expected to be back quickly. She organized things into place on the yvas, then swung up into her seat.

She sought the shape of hooves in the dirt, finding where they had moved the night before, and guided Wildfire back onto the path. A gentle squeeze of her legs and a tilt in her position urged Wildfire into a walk, and once they were clear of the city she lifted her body from his back with the strength of her legs and asked him to canter.

Wildfire was happy to oblige, the room she created between their bodies letting him move smoothly from walk to canter without running into Naiya's hips. She let him find his pace before finding her seat once again, letting the circular motion of his body shape the movement of her hips, back and up, under and forward.

Her traps were marked, and the path she had taken was a familiar one, all too soon they were nearing the hunting grounds and Naiya had to ask Wildfire to slow. They walked quietly, the sound of his hooves no more warning to the animals than any other creature moving about as the morning began.

She was excited to find that her first trap had snared a rabbit, still thin from the winter, but large enough to make a nice meal. She swung down from her seat, her feet light on the ground, but when she landed she had a moment of lost balance, only Wildfire's proximity kept her on her feet.

She frowned, perhaps she should visit that healer again, or ask her back for another meal. Still, once her balance returned she bent to remove the rabbit, finding that it awoke and fought once she grabbed him. She used the rope to her advantage, slipping it over the rabbit's head and standing on the end so that she could pull the body upwards while holding the head in place.

A quiet pop was all the sound the neck made as it broke, and the rabbit didn't scream, something she was glad for. She hated the sound of a rabbit screaming it's death, and with the flesh intact, she could take it to be processed at the spit fire, then she could give the pelt to the healer in return for her services.

She reset the trap, allowing the loop to fall in about the same place, the counter weight was still in place, and it had done well over night, so Naiya would leave it as was. She remembered Shahar saying that the trap couldn't smell like humans, so she took the rabbit and rubbed it all over the rope, hoping to mask the places where she had touched it.

Pleased, she mounted back up, urging Wildfire back into a walk with a gentle push. They checked the other traps, of the four, only one other had anything in it, a small ground squirrel that had strangled itself in its attempt to escape.

She pulled him loose, draping him from the same spot on the yvas where she had put the rabbit. Making sure both were secured she urged Wildfire into a walk again, circling back to the second trap, having seen droppings from a deer nearby.

She searched the ground, seeking the cloven tracks of the leggy creatures, when she found them, she followed the shapes until she could see the path the had cut through the grass. It was difficult for her still, to see the difference between regular grass and a game trail, but with the other clues to help her, she managed.

Naiya let Wildfire pick his path through the grass, mindful to keep her hips loose against him so he would be free to move comfortably. He knew what they were doing, and so long as she kept a gentle pressure in the right direction, he would follow her lead, letting her scan the ground and the horizon for deer.

That was what she hoped to find, even a small deer would feed them for a number of days. She didn't bother readying her bow, she was hardly a good shot on her own feet, let alone on Wildfire's back, so instead she focused on searching the grass for any signs of animals or movements.

When the grass ahead of her began to stir, Naiya stopped Wildfire quickly, sliding from his back slowly, lowering herself with the strength of her arms to keep her landing silent.

Wait, still She signed to her companion. She drew her bow, nocking an arrow as she crouched to keep from being seen through the grass. She checked each step before she moved, making sure to avoid sticks or leaves that might snap or crackle under foot.

A chill breeze blew past them, forcing the grass to bow to the force of Zulrav's breath. She spotted the animal then, a wild pig still asleep, she must have caught him as he shifted, that would have been the motion she had seen.

She put her bow across her shoulder, out of the way, instead seeking the thick handle of her spear. She lined the tip of the spear up, aiming for the vulnerable spot of his exposed neck.

She stepped forward, treating her spear as she would a dagger, but in her excitement she forgot to watch her feet. Beneath her foot a rock rolled, and she stumbled to keep her feet, the sound waking the pig, but not before she could ready herself enough to strike.

Her spear shot forward and down as the pig hopped to his feet, her aim was poor, but the side of a pig was a large target and she managed to catch him in the back leg.

Heart to Heart

"You go out, and have a good ride, Seirei. The twins, and I will be fine here."

Seirei looked at her friend intently. The soft spoken girl was prone to hiding her own hurts, especially when she saw that Seirei needed something. Or wanted something. Or even looked as if she needed or wanted something. Seirei knew how grateful Taerin was for being taken in by the Dawnwhisper pavilion. Seirei felt the same way. And as a captive, her situation was even more precarious than Seirei's had been when the Dawnwhispers had taken her in. The pavilion that had bought Taerin was scattered. Most, perhaps all of them had either been captured during the first pirate raid last season, or killed during one of the raids. If any remained, Taerin didn't know. She hadn't stayed long enough to find out.

The girl had made her escape during the confusion of the second raid. She had tried to make it on her own, but she was in no condition to leave the city and hope to survive. So she'd been forced to stay in the shadows, scavenging whatever she could to keep herself alive. And even that was nearly not enough. Taerin had been in pretty bad shape when Seirei found her.

Even now, her situation was dangerous. As a captive, Taerin had no rights. No say in what happened to her. Seirei knew that no one in the Dawnwhisper pavilion would ever hurt the timid girl, but if someone from another pavilion tried to claim her, Seirei didn't know if they would be able to prevent it. Especially when there was no man living among them to breed Taerin once she gave birth to the child she was carrying. For this reason, Taerin rarely left the relative safety of the Dawnwhisper pavilion. She did everything she could to help out, and earn her keep. More than that, she often took less than her share of food when she thought no one was looking. And she never complained no matter how tired, or sick she felt.

As a result, Seirei kept a close eye on her friend. Taerin's pregnancy was a difficult one, and Seirei did her best to make sure that the tasks Taerin did around the pavilion were ones that would not sap what little strength she had too much. But the girl seemed to be feeling well today, so she nodded. Taeren loved to watch the twins, and it was something she could do to feel useful without straining herself. It was also good practice for when her own child was born. With those thoughts in mind, Seirei felt less guilty for leaving Lukar and Lira in her friend's care for a few bells.

Naiya had said that she could use any horse or strider she wanted as long as they weren't already doing something else. And while she had made some progress in learning how to ride, she still wasn't confident enough to try riding Kairi again. So she was happy to find Vanya grazing quietly at the edge of camp. Seirei greeted the mixed strider mare quietly, and gave her a quick grooming. Then she put a yvas on her, and mounted the mare carefully.

The ride through the city was a tense, uneasy one for Seirei. Although she had some idea of what she was doing now, she wasn't sure she would be able to control the mare in a crowd if anything happened. People could get hurt if Vanya spooked at something, and bolted into the crowd. But Vanya was a steady, gentle mare, and she seemed to like her well enough. So she trusted the mare, and hoped for the best.

Her tension was painfully obvious to Vanya in her rigid posture, tight hips, and inability to relax. It caused the mare to become tense, and uneasy herself. Her ears swiveled around constantly as she searched for signs of danger. And her gait was off as well. The mare's slow, halting steps caused her to jostle Seirei badly as she moved. The struggle to maintain her balance so she wouldn't fall made her even more nervous. Seirei realized that she was the one causing the problem by being so tense, and nervous. But between the awkward, jostling gait, the feeling that she could fall off at any time, and the fear of what might happen if she lost control in the crowd, it was utterly impossible for her to relax.

She struggled to remove the tip, her stab a far more practiced move. She didn't have to try for more than a tick or two as the pig turned to run at her with tusks she knew now to be quite sharp. His motion ripped the spear from her leg and she was able to move, stabbing again at the pig and causing him to hesitate.

She gave a wild shout, hoping fear would immobilize the creature as she struck again aiming for his throat. She lunged forward, getting closer before attacking, but her weapon wavered in her grip, the heavy tip took more getting used to.

Instead of spearing the pig, her weapon dropped from her target down, the weight of it dragging the sharp points down through the flesh creating a wound that oozed blood.

The pig wasn't done, he charged at her forcing her to scramble back out of his way. Undeterred he followed, and Naiya wasn't sure she could continue to evade him. She turned on her heel and ran.

"Wildfire, to me!" She called him, the angry pig barreling along behind her. Her companion heard her call, coming to her at a canter, he slowed to a trot, and Naiya grabbed his yvas, he fell to a stop as she swung into her seat, but she urged him forward as soon as she was off the ground.

Mounted and moving, it was much easier to evade the pig, she followed Wildfire's trot with her hips as she waited for the wound in the neck to finish the pig. He turned and began to run away once he realized he couldn't fight, but Naiya steered Wildfire after the trail of blood, spotting it on leaves and grass. It wasn't difficult, the amount of blood the pig was losing was great, and his path was clearly marked through the grass.

It was lucky that she'd followed his tracks, however, because once he'd fallen she had no way to find him. Only the blood path allowed her to find her prey. She patted Wildfire's neck in appreciation he'd saved her from a tough couple of days.

She slid off his back, her hunt a success, she would turn in early and go finish her work from the night before. The pig had bled himself, so she just had to lift the creature up onto Wildfire's shoulders. He was heavy though, as she discovered attempting to lift him from the ground. She strained to wedge her fingers beneath the creature, but he was too heavy. She cursed, the strain in her arms giving her little more than pinched fingers for her efforts. She would have to lift him some other way, perhaps with help from the yvas.

She stood, searching her bag for some rope. She pulled a length sliding it beneath the boar's head so that she could pull it lower without having to actually lift the creature alone. She tied the end of the rope to itself, forming a loop around the pig, his forelegs serving to hold the rope in place.

She beckoned Wildfire closer with a simple gesture, and he obliged her, his curiosity clear. She passed the rope through the top most handle on the yvas, and along the other side. She hoped that pulling down on the rope would be easier than pulling the pig up. If she had to drag the creature home, she would lose much of the meat.

She moved to Wildfire's other side, grabbing the rope and giving a sturdy pull, she felt the pig begin to move. She was triumphant until Wildfire spooked, some combination of the weight of her pulling and the pig suddenly moving towards him causing him unease.

He was usually more steady, but the wild chase and Naiya's own fear and urgency had been more than enough excitement. She reared, leaping forward and ripping the rope from her hands. The pig followed only a moment before the rope pulled through, causing him more panic.

Careful not to chase him, Naiya moved towards her mount, reassurance in her posture, hands held low to show him she was nothing to be feared. He was still wild eyed, but he let her approach, she was no threat and he knew it.

Apology, comfort she signed to him, trying to soothe his nerves. She waited, relaxed in his presence until he looked more calm before approaching him to soothe him with touch.

When he was calm once more she took him to the pig, lifting the parts of the creature that she was able to show that he was no harm. Next she lifted the rope, rubbing the material against him showing it for him to see. No danger, no harm in the shaping of her hands.

When he was calm she tried again, looping the rope through the yvas and pulling the pig, this time slowly. Wildfire snorted, but stayed still. She stopped to pat him, soothing him and cooing gentle "good boy"s at the stallion.

She moved back, beginning again, slowly hefting the pig, pulling with all her strength to move the pig up the rope and onto Wildfire's back. When it was at his shoulder she tied the rope off on the yvas, coming back around to position the pig shoving him with some difficulty onto Wildfire's back.

She waited, making sure her was still calm, then mounted as well, they had a bit of a ride to get back, but she was sure he could manage. She urged him forward and despite her asking for merely a walk, once their intentions were clear, Wildfire jumped into a canter taking off towards home.

Heart to Heart

When Seirei reached the edge of the city, a tall man dressed in leathers greeted her politely, and wished her a safe journey. Seirei thanked him, and tried to hide how nervous he made her. The man looked like a member of the Watch. It wasn't that many seasons ago when he would have assumed she was trying to escape if he saw her entering the Sea of Grass by herself...and punished her harshly for it.

Seirei kept the city within sight, because she wasn't confidant in her ability to find it again if she lost sight of it. But she rode out several yards into the Sea of Grass so she could have plenty of room to practice riding. When she had chosen a good spot, she took a few ticks to adjust her seat, and make herself comfortable in her yvas. Vanya seemed to appreciate her efforts. It took a few ticks for Seirei to realize why that might be, but when she did, it made a great deal of sense to her. The more comfortable she was, the more relaxed she would be. And that, in turn, would make Vanya more comfortable. It would also make it less likely that she would accidentally send mixed signals to the mare.

Once she was ready, Seirei leaned forward in her yvas, and squeezed Vanya's girth briefly with her calves. Vanya obliged her by moving into a slow, but steady walk. Seirei started out by practicing how to change directions while riding. It was one of the most basic commands a rider could learn...and one of the most important ones. Seirei wanted to make sure that the command became as natural as breathing to her. She needed to be able to do it without thinking, responding only to what she saw. If the pavilion was attacked as they traveled along the Run, and they had to flee a dangerous predator, her life, and the lives of her children might depend on just that.

In order to get the practice she needed, Seirei rode in wide circles. When it was time to ask Vanya to turn, she did so both by turning her head in the direction she wanted to go, while planting her calf firmly into Vanya's side in the direction opposite of where she wanted to go. It was a lot harder than it seemed. For one thing, it was easy to forget that she had to plant her calf into her mount's side in the opposite direction. After all, when she turned her head to ask for a change of direction, she turned it in the direction she wanted to go. Combining the seeming opposing commands was difficult. Seirei often found herself confusing the poor mare by telling her to turn in two different directions at once. When this happened, Vanya would stop, and snort sharply in irritation.

The other problem she ran into was that it was hard to keep her balance while she gesturing with one calf. If she bounced in the yvas while correcting her balance, Vanya often took it as a request to go faster. This resulted in a frantic struggle to regain her seat, and more than one jarring fall when she failed to do so. But refused to give up. Pain was a good teacher, and Seirei found herself slowly getting a better feel of what she was supposed to be doing. And as time passed, she found herself falling less. That was an encouraging sign, and seeing the progress she was making doubled Seirei's determination to make even more progress.

Naiya let him canter, although she had to crouch low over the pig to keep it from bouncing about and falling. She was lifted out of her seat with her legs, allowing her to be out of the way while she kept their cargo secure. The bouncing of her knees as she absorbed impact was a familiar motion, the muscles in her leg stretching and contracting in small movements to keep her in place.

When they neared the city, Naiya sat up, still raised off his back, but no longer so much out of his way. It was a shift of weight and body that asked him to slow, and after a few more body-lengths of persistent canter towards home, he obliged, slowing to a trot.

As the city grew close, a mounted figure became clear in the grass, and a little more distance closed before she realized the horse and rider were both familiar. Wildfire neighed loudly, a sound of surprised greetings, and Naiya waved a hand at the two. She sat up straighter as they approached, and Wildfire slowed to a walk as they moved in towards Seirei and Vanya. Wildfire blew softly at the mare, who returned the greeting in kind, although, perhaps with a bit less excitement.

"Mana, good morning. How is it going out here?" good fortune Her hands finished with the sign, gesturing to the luck of her hunt. "If you were finishing up, perhaps we can ride home together?"
