----
DRENDEN SLEPH

Appearance

Race: Nuit
Gender: Male
Age: 63
Birthday: 3, Winter, 453 AV
Birthplace: Riverfall

Appearance: Highly variable, as he is both a Nuit and a Morpher. Tends to inhabit animals, adding humanoid features occasionally for convenience. As a general rule, will look a little slovenly and slouching even when inhabiting animals, and defaults to Morphing features such as hands or mouthparts coloured a blue almost freakishly light for an Akalak - his old appearance.

Character Concept

Short version: Fresh-turned Nuit struggles with ties of family, identity, and failure from his old life as Akalak mortician.

Long Version :
A former Akalak Nuit morpher and mortician that hunts down interesting creatures to inhabit, then kills them and preserves their bodies for later use, Drenden uses Morphing to grant himself vocal chords, opposable thumbs, and other useful body features taken for granted by most sentients.

Years as a maimed mortician have not been kind to his personality. Drenden is a combination of socially inept, somewhat slovenly, and drawn to the more structural aspects of people's anatomy. While this is mostly connected to his Morphing, those who know him to be Nuit might wonder if he's thinking of them as his next host. He probably isn't, as he generally inhabits non-sentients, but that's less than comforting for many.

The loss of his darker soul unbalanced his mind significantly, undoing much of his comfort around death and decay. The Nuit mindset is slowly setting in, but as of now he finds himself disturbed by death to an unsettling degree. At times of stress, the dissonance can trigger compulsive behaviours and impulsiveness.

His general apathy towards the living has not improved, but that apathy extends to the negatives as well as the positives. He doesn't tend to hold grudges, or feel many bursts of strong emotion. Usually.

He's trying to escape his past of disgrace among the lower rungs of Akalak society by remaking himself as a Nuit.

(To Be Elaborated On Through Roleplay) His Konti sister has been looking for him - she arrived in Riverfall to find his embalming parlour abandoned. She just wants to get in touch with her brother, but she has some unfortunate opinions regarding the undead...

Character History

History :
When Drenden Sleph was an Akalak by the name of Saulin, he did not fit in.

Congenitally clumsy and weak from birth, he was mauled and left for dead by the Glassbeak he tried to bring down in his Rite of Trial, ending up covered in horrific scars and a maimed, useless leg. Though the bird did die of blood loss soon after, his near-failure preceded a quick decline through Riverfall society as he shuffled through professions.

Eventually, he learned the art of embalming from a dour, unpleasant master and found a niche as a mortician and embalmer, picking up an intimate knowledge of anatomy uninformed by all the messiness of life and function. His darker personality emerged soon after, and its fixation on the mechanics of death was both a blessing and a curse - he was able to channel it into his work, while he turned his lighter self to understanding the structures he witnessed in all their states of decay.

By fifty years, he had begun to dabble in Morphing, with the aim of investigating the anatomy he had learned, and by sixty, he was familiar enough with the forms of humanoid anatomy to mimic many features, even becoming able to reinforce his maimed leg with spars of bone for short bursts. He was finally beginning to feel comfortable in his own society, processing the dead and, through them, learning the mechanisms of life.

At sixty-three years old, the disease that had crippled him from birth surged back through his blood. It entranced him as it enacted all the mechanisms of decay latent within him. He grew old swiftly, far too swiftly, and mundane healing did not help. He would die quickly.

Unless...

The ichor of a Nuit offered the chance of escape, of a way to slip out of his frail body and inhabit predators like the ones that had mauled him. He found a Nuit willing to aid in the ritual for a price, and one night in Riverfall he drank the brimming cup.

As he slept, as his soul curled around and inhabited his dying body. As his blood flushed silver, half of him died. The fascination with decay, with death, with undeath sunk into nothingness.

What was left knew the structures and malleability of life, knew something of hunting and something of embalming, though he was not the expert he had been. Memories were all present, but with half his mind and all its preferences and associations torn away, they seemed to fray. Decay featured prominently for reasons he couldn't understand, anymore, memories of stray thoughts that he never remembered thinking.

And the Ritual circled his mind, telling him how to prepare his next body, when he needed it.

The donating Nuit had departed with a substantial payment, and Saulin sold much of the rest of it on the way out of town, retaining only some basic equipment and a load of embalming supplies, some money to purchase his new life. He still wore his corpse, and so the moneylenders and shopkeepers didn't comment, though a few looked askance. Tents and other gear, a horse that shied a little from him until it grew used to the movement. It was time to reinvent himself. Saulin became Drenden Sleph on the ride out of Riverfall, and when he camped a little ways out of the city he could feel it.

The only freedom is death, some say. Death is the ultimate transformation, the one that breaks every chain of debt.

Well, he had died, and now he was free.

Character sheet

Drenden Sleph

Postby Astator on May 6th, 2016, 11:37 pm

Hello and Welcome! There are some issues that need to be addressed before you can continue roleplaying
  • Your must list where your skill points are coming from. You have 50 Starting Points and a racial bonus of 10 to Embalming
  • Your lores are too broad, what specific part of the anatomy of Akalaks do you know?
  • What kind of Riverfall Fauna does he know?
  • You must pick either the Cloak or the Coat, not both.
  • You do not have the skills to survive by yourself in the wild in a tent, even if it is just outside of the city.

Once finished please PM me.

Thank you,
Astator
Which way do you want to go? Up or Down?

Attention Players, Graders, and Storytellers:

A character sheet does not require the green checkmark for the player to roleplay. This is just a notification to all that the character sheet has passed through the Liaisons thorough checklist and meets Mizahar standards.

All sheets with a large red X or a speech bubble beside their thread title do not recieve grades and cannot continue threads they are currently involved in until all issues have been fixed and verified.
