The Olidosapux Pt.2

The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

The Olidosapux Pt.2

4th of Spring, 516AV

Ixzo began early that morning. She had only barely interrupted her sleep schedule, allowing herself a two hour power nap after the sun set. Now, the moon was not even crowning the sky when she left Endrykas behind. Her step had a purpose. This was not her leisure scan to find whatever small prey she may come across and bring it back. Days prior she had stumbled into a small herd of Olidosapux, and after tracking their trail, she now had a plan.

Preparation. Preparation was key this time, and Ixzo had not failed in that detail.

Well, partly.

Her silly trick with the rabbit bones to make her faster hadn't worked, and the Kelvic was not brave enough yet to try to create another legacy, in fear that it may actually work. What effects would it bring? Still, she had known this hunt would be difficult and had to reevaluate her hunting options. She was now one of the better hunters that provided for the Spitfire. Perhaps working with her lioness' natural environment had helped her, perhaps it was just age. Nearly six years, she would have to have it down by now.

Still, the lioness found herself worrying as she stepped. Her keen vision could detect the pale hints that highlighted the clouds in the sky. She did not see colors so vibrantly as she did in her human form, but she recognized the last of the sun. The Olidosapux would be far more docile now, as they would likely be down for the night.

In between testing the magical tricks, Ixzo had barraged some of the more experienced hunters with information on the Olidosapux. Those things that she did not already notice, such as their behaviors. She did not hope to understand the herbivore behaviors as easily as these humans did, but when it was explained to her, it made sense.

From what she gathered, the Olidosapux travelled in small herds, especially in spring when they needed to graze the most. The one she had seen two days prior had been a motherly herd, and she would do best to go after a pair or trio of males. She had of course questioned this immediately, knowing the males would be larger and more aggressive, as with any animal. Yet, the herd would be smaller, and surprisingly, more willing to leave one behind. Males will protect the females more so than other males.

This made sense… she supposed.

The Olidosapux Pt.2

Postby Ixzo on June 23rd, 2016, 9:03 pm

Shifting her attention out of her thoughts and into the ground before her, the cat flicked her tail once in anticipation. She'd been following her own trail at this point, having set it a few days prior, but not the smell changed. Habitually, the lioness dropped her jaw slightly, tasting the air for the more distinct smells that her nose did not pick up. The dusty and warm trail of ht Olidosapux danced on the edge of her senses. But her trail of it was barraged with the more recent animals. This was not a very well-traveled path, through the tall thick grasses that could not be grazed and around the occasional sentry of trees.

The strong smell of boar assaulted her taste and she closed her mouth, her reflective gaze eyeing the animals that skittered out of her path. But she had no interest in them, and they knew it. Nearly forty chimes later, the scent was stronger. They had stayed around, for which she was grateful. She knew precisely why as well, and immediately split from the path. The tall grass smoothed out now, detailed with the soft green roots of the new spring weed. While there was still the stalks as tall as her shoulder, they were not so sharp now, and torn up by the herbivores. No point in following the herd in circles as they grazed.

Instead the lioness headed east, raising her head to look out on the horizon in front of her. Clear night vision was her friend as she saw the low moon reflected on the ground, water. But something was off, and she could not immediately see what it was. Had the mirror moon been… crumbled? Something in the water moved again, and Ixzo slowed her pace quickly, skittering to a halt. The shorter grass smoothed out and nearly disappeared, as she now looked at the small valley below. But this valley was a watering hole. Since the spring showers had yet to start, the water was far too low. The glass puddle gathered in the basin, leaving raw mud and dirt for a stretch to reach it. The spring that fed it was a mere trickle, hardly able to create the ripple she was seeing in the water.

The Olidosapux Pt.2

Postby Ixzo on June 23rd, 2016, 9:03 pm

Then she heard it. The grunts of the beast, the slopping of mud under its hooves and the splash of water when it fell back in.

Excitement thrilled her, and her shoulders already fell back, preparing for a more quiet tread. Instead she trotted forward, watching her step down the muddy hill towards the water hole. As she neared, she would have laughed with her luck. An Olidosapux was stuck in the mud.

Slowing to a walk, she kept her distance, watching the thing for a moment. It seemed to be stuck on a ledge just on the end of the water, only it couldn't pull itself up because the ledge was the soft mud that surrounded them. Slowing even further, she flattened her ears, long legs dragging her closer to the bank, as the dumb beast had yet to see her. How long had it been like this? The sun had only set a few hours ago, so not long. Surely it had given up earlier? Its herd clearly no longer helped. Where were they?

As she pondered this, the beast slowed once more, nostrils flaring with the effort. It must be shallow enough where it stood that it could keep its head above water, but the thing still rested its large horn into the mud it struggled against. She froze as soon as it calmed, aware that she was not yet detected, but sure it would only be ticks now. It was tired, likely struggling for hours, but she was not.

Her issue would be if the herd was simply over in the grass rather than in the mud. At his call, she'd be chased off. But perhaps he was injured in some way? Her pride did not want this to be true. It would be less of an accomplishment to call the Drykas out, only to retrieve a broken body.

Then it saw her.

The Olidosapux Pt.2

Postby Ixzo on June 23rd, 2016, 9:04 pm

She did not see his reaction, but immediately heard the snort of adjusting his breath. As he had just gotten his regular even breathing back, it suddenly quickened, shallow and fast. She heard the slop of mud as it raised its head, but the beast didn't do anything, watching her.

To test his reaction, Ixzo took a step forward, one massive paw sinking into soft mud. She did not press her weight down, knowing she would have to take an alternate route, but waiting for his reaction.

He was so tired, this movement was not enough to spur him into action once more. Perhaps he would wait until she was closer.

Her heart had picked up, and she was not so patient now. She had his tiredness and his solitude to her advantage. To risk his herd coming back would be idiocy. Retracting her pw, she skirted around the soft mud and trotted forward too quickly. The bull reacted, raising his head and surging forward. Two massive front legs dug into the soft mud, uselessly sinking into it as he attempted to pull himself out. He might've been tired, but her sudden presence gave him a new wave of energy. The large action surprised her, and she halted, skirting back a bit to see if he actually could get out. She was a mere two meter away now, and the pointed ivory atop his head was something to be watched.

She took a measured step forward as he followed his movement, swaying from side to side to get a better grip on the mud. But it was immediately evident that it was futile, and she watched as he fell back into the water. This gave her more confidence and she sauntered forward, keeping her head low and her ears alert. As she did this, he resumed his position, but when she got only a few feet away, he turned his head suddenly to her. Agile-y, she hopped out of the way, dancing towards his right side now. Her mind spun as she thought of a way to get at him. She could not just charge him, she would be impaled. Still, if he exposed his back she would have little issue taking a tired beast like this down. Only, she had to get to his back.

The Olidosapux Pt.2

Postby Ixzo on June 23rd, 2016, 9:04 pm

Weighing her options, Ixzo kept the Olidosapux's eye on her as she thought. Neither of them were fast, this was obvious. When it came to power, he was twice her size, she could not just wrestle him as she would a goat or boar. While her claws and teeth were plenty sharp enough to rip even his thick skin, his horn could go through her shoulder with ease.

All she had going for her was her wits and agility. Had she a hunting companion, an ambush would be so much easier. One would distract and she would get on its back and it would be over. Still, it was not impossible. She was lucky enough to have the thing already cornered, rather than having to do it herself, preserving energy. Still, she had to now get it to expose its back, which might've been easier if she had cornered him herself. She was too lucky to complain though, he was just waiting for her.

When she picked up her pace, trotting to the other side of him, he turned with her. Stubby legs pulling himself awkwardly around on the edge of the shore. He was not going to let her get to him. Right now he had adrenaline, but surely that would wear off?

The animal let out a bleating moan, and her heart skipped a beat. Was his herd actually around? She couldn't tell. But as he lost his balance and splashed back into the water, she realized it was simply a complaint. She did not understand this animal well enough, but she hoped it was good and alone now.

Circling back to the other side, she realized that the further to the right of the beast that she went, the less steep the ledge was. If she wanted a chance, she would have to goad him towards that, giving him an actual chance to get out. Then, his back would be exposed to her if she could get over in time.

Risking the horn, Ixzo took two steps forward then trotted to the right. Instinctually the animal lunged for her, not particularly to get out of the water. She yowled, falling backwards as she saw the horn reach her. Too close, that was too close.

The Olidosapux Pt.2

Postby Ixzo on June 23rd, 2016, 9:04 pm

Panting now, she danced further to the right, and to her satisfaction, the large creature lumbered a few feet over in the water as well, still threatening her. She did not doubt that his threats were true, although when she backed up, it was less out of fear.

Rather than hunting this creature, she felt more like she was dancing with it. Constantly feigning forward and leaping back, something which any experienced hunter would assume meant she was not prepared. Hai, she would have chastised herself for trying it. But it was something she was working to her advantage now. The dumb beast was too dim to read into this as a hunter would, but he did fall for her play perfectly. By appearing skittish, he lunged for her more than he would have with a more experienced hunter. And now, as she trotted back another meter, he saw his chance, just as she wanted.

Caiyha, why do you create these beast so dumb? The thought flitted through her mind, as she settled her weight back into her hind legs. She watched the two front legs of the beast up on the shore again. Again the hooves sunk into the soft mud, but when he wiggled he could almost pull his rear legs out.

This was her chance.

The Olidosapux Pt.2

Postby Ixzo on June 23rd, 2016, 9:05 pm

Now that he had committed to the move, he had no choice. He would either pull himself out or fall back yet again, there was no veering from his path. With a burst of power she leaped towards the left, circling around him with two leaps. She was no fast runner, but she was pretty big. A grunt of complain flew from his mouth, and she knew it was over. He was trying to turn towards her now, but the thing was too big, too heavy… and too stuck.

The furry stretch of his back was sopping wet, but it was wide open. With a leap that seemed almost easy, she propelled herself onto the creature, long claws digging into his flesh. The sudden assault seemed to propel the creature forward, and before hse knew it, he was out of her grasp. The large creature had made it out.

Shit.

He was slow and exhausted, but when he turned towards her, she knew better than to test him. Just as quick as she had attacked Ixzo feigned back, bursting out of his way. He lunged, but did not chase her. Now that they were both on land, his size gave him even more advantage. How was she going to get at his back again?

She roared with frustration, trotting back. They both slowed considerably, until they were just standing a few meters apart. He breathed heavy, watching her carefully, and she flicked her tail, waiting for him to make a move. After nearly three chimes of the tense standoff, the bull lowered her head to blow gunk out of his nose, and she lunged forward. Instead of going directly, she looped around. As she expected, the beast turned with her, keeping his horn front and center at all times. Good with agile maneuvers like this, Ixzo fell back, circling the other way without missing a step, forcing him to change directions. For only a tick she was ahead of him, and thought she might have a chance, but her caught up quickly, obscuring his back once more.

The Olidosapux Pt.2

Postby Ixzo on June 23rd, 2016, 9:05 pm

She slowed down, taking two steps back when he stepped forward, and the begun to watch each other again.

Much longer this time, she intended to outlast the beast. Whatever energy he had mustered up when she appeared, was gone now. Hours stuck in the water must have done a number on him, and she could see it. His legs trembled, and his breathing slowed considerably. She knew he only wanted to sink to the floor and sleep, but his own will kept his horn up.

No matter, she was just getting started.

After giving him another chime to get comfortable, she lunged forward and then quickly feigned to the right when he met her move. From there she burst into a quick lope around him, forcing him to dance with her once more. Again, she changed directions without missing a beat, knowing he would not catch up as quickly, and circled him towards the left again.

This time he was not so fast. Pushing all her power into her legs, she flew past him, and might've purred at the sight of his wet back. Blood fell from where her claws had pierced him earlier, and she bound up, lightly hoping onto his back. This time her teeth went in with her claws.

The Olidosapux jolted, bucked and then lunged forward. He seemed to lose control, bucking his head back and forth to either try and reach her with his horn or throw her off. Ixzo did not let go, digging her hind legs into his rump as well. He slowed for a tick and she took advantage to unlock her front paws, and latch them back on further forward before he started again.

It could not have been more than a chime before the beast slowed. Fatigue and pain buckled his kneed and he fell forward. It was not his intention, but this sudden change nearly threw her off. Instead she let go, sliding down his back to reach his neck. He bumped his head to the left weakly, but she easily jumped from his horn, eyeing the warm neck. She knew jugular chords too well, and in an instant her pearly whites were locked on the main artery, enjoying the tantalizing taste of blood as it coursed through her mouth and over her chin. The Olidosapux still struggle, but this new death blow was it for him. He hadn't the energy left to fight her even now, as most animals would have. So together they sat, waiting for his death. Warmth filled her heart, replacing the dwindling flow of blood after a nearly fifteen chimes.

She didn't need to check if he was dead when she unlatched her sore jaw, running a prickly tongue across her whiskers.

She'd done it. The Olidosapux was hers! But the lioness did not feel like celebrating just yet, she was tired herself, and sat back on her haunches, running her tongue over her paws and then swiping them behind her ears. For a few chimes she just waited for her prey to cool. She'd petching done it. The beast was dead.
