Seirei watched the twins sleep. They were beautiful when they slept. The quiet was beautiful, too. She was starting to forget what it sounded like. But even though Lukar and Lira were only twelve days old, Seirei couldn't imagine her life without them any more. The tiny infants filled something in her that she hadn't even known was missing until she had them in her life.

A soft ruslting outside the tent caught her attention. As far as she knew, she and the twins were alone in the small camp. Her captor had left to go hunting bells ago. No one else lived with him. He didn't have any herds of zibri, or horses that might make some noise. So there shouldn't be any. Startled, Seirei stood slowly so she wouldn't wake the twins, and left the tent.

Terrin, Rytira, and Tesaia were gathered at the edge of the camp, looking uncertain, but hopeful. When they saw her, Teisaia started to say something, but Seirei made a cautionary, silencing gesture.

"Lukar and Lira are asleep." she said quietly.

"I'd like them to stay that way for a while."

The others nodded.

"Good. That will make this easier." Teisaia said happily.

Seirei gave her friend a startled look. What could they possibly be up to that would be easier if the twins were sleeping?

"Look, we've been thinking about this a lot. I know how difficult it is for you, being a captive, and all. It would be bad enough, just being...well..."

"Being bred like an animal?"

Seirei loved her children. And now that they were here, she couldn't wish otherwise. But she hated her captor as much as she feared him for forcing himself on her repeatedly in order to sire them on her, much the way a horse would be bred. And she dreaded the thought that he would begin raping her again soon now that the twins had been born. How long would he wait to breed her again? One season? Two? Waisana had said two seasons were needed between pregnancies. But she didn't trust that her captor would wait that long in his eagerness to breed her again. Already, she saw him glancing at her speculatively at times.

"Well...yes. That. But the way that a lot of other people treat you must make it even worse."

Seirei nodded slowly. The looks. The jeers. The constant reminders that she was a worthless slave, and that the children she would be forced to bear were the only value she had.

"If you looked less like a captive, that might change. At least a little. Learning how to ride would help with that. Riding is...everything to a Drykas. People who don't know how to ride aren't respected. It's that simple. The traders who come here the most frequently know this, and send people who know how to ride to conduct the most important trades. You wouldn't be allowed to ride a strider, of course. But if you rode a horse when moving about the city, it wouldn't be as immediately obvious that you were a captive. You would still be an outsider, but some people might assume you were with the traders, and treat you accordingly."

Now that Teisaia had said that, Seirei remembered that her...that the caravan she used to live with used to do the same thing. She had been something of a different case since her father was a Drykas, but looking back at it now, she suspected that he thought of her as something like a pet more than a child. And learning how to ride was one step closer to being able to escape.

"I'd like that." Seirei said softly.

"We were hoping you'd say that. That's why we brought him."

"He" was a horse. Seirei hadn't noticed him until Teisaia had pointed him out since he was standing among a clump of bushes.

"He's getting up there in years, but he's a good old gelding. Patient with even the most hesitant of riders, and very calm. He'll be perfect to teach you how to ride."

"Wait...now?"

"Yes, now. And before you object, Rytira can keep an eye on the twins while we teach you. So come on!" Teisaia said eagerly.

Seirei couldn't help but grin at her friend's enthusiasm.

"Thanks, guys." she said as she followed Teisaia and Rytira out of the camp.

Wild Ride

Seirei glanced nervously at the men who were guarding the gate. They scowled at her suspiciously, but since she was in the company of two Drykas, they let her pass unchallenged. They didn't go far out into the Sea of Grass, but they did go out far enough that they were no longer in sight of the city. Seirei was grateful for that. She didn't want any potentially hostile witnesses to see all of the mistakes she was likely to make. She was also worried that someone might try to stop her from learning how to ride.

"Normally, when we teach someone how to ride, we also teach them how to care for their strider properly. But in this case, it's different. You don't own a horse, so it isn't necessary for you to know how to take care of one immediately. And since we have the twins to consider, we know our time is limited. Especially since we don't know if your master would like the idea of your learning how to ride. These lessons will be difficult to arrange if we have to find times when we're all available, and your master isn't around." Teisaia began.

Seirei nodded. She didn't know if Lian would approve of her learning how to ride or not. He left her pretty much to herself when he wasn't using her. He allowed her to carve, and sell her goods to anyone who would buy them. He even allowed her to keep the mizas she earned from her work. But learning how to ride might be a different story. He didn't seem to like it if she got too close to his strider when they were at home. Seirei wasn't sure if that was because she was a captive, and not worthy of being in a strider's presence, or if it was a sign that he didn't want her around any horses at all. But until he actually said something to her about it, she would take the risk. Even if he did say something to her, she would likely learn how to ride anyway. She needed to know how to ride if she was ever going to make her escape.

"The first thing we need to do is get you on the horse, Seirei. And we brought something that will help with that."

Teisaia unhooked a yvas bag from her own strider, and reached inside it to pull out a block of wood. It was small enough to be carried easily, but big enough to be used as a stool. Seirei took the block of wood, and moved over to the horse.

"No, not that side! It's always best to mount from the left side. Here, watch how Terrin does it."

Terrin moved so that he was standing on the left side of his strider. He patted the strider's shoulder a couple of times before grabbing a handful of mane near the strider's withers. Stepping forward with his right leg, he gave a kind of hop while swinging his left leg up, and over the strider's back. While doing this, he grabbed the strider's withers with his other hand, and pulled himself up. He mounted his strider several times to show Seirei how to do it.

"Now it's your turn." he said with a grin.

"It's best if you don't need to use the piece of wood, but we brought it in case you need a bit of a boost."

Seirei nodded in understanding. Then she set the block of wood aside, wanting to try to mount the horse without it, first. When she approached the horse, he watched her indifferently. Seirei tried to do exactly as she'd seen Terrin do, grabbing a handful of mane as she gave a hop to give herself momentum as she swung her left leg up. Unfortunately, she didn't have enough momentum, and she ended up sprawled over the gelding's back awkwardly. The gelding made a huffing sound that sounded a lot like a resigned sigh. Terrin chuckled as he moved to help Seirei out of her predicament.

"Try to get more momentum this time."

Seirei tried again. But this time, she must have gotten too much momentum. She managed to pull herself up onto the horse's back, but she overbalanced, and slipped off of the other side. The gelding stared down at her, as if to ask what she was doing. She couldn't help but get the feeling that he was laughing at her. Terrin and Teisaia certainly were. Seirei glared at them as she picked herself up gingerly.

"When I said to get more momentum, I didn't mean quite that much." Terrin said with a chuckle.

Seirei muttered darkly under her breath while Terrin examined her with his eyes, trying to make sure she was okay. Aside from being likely to have a few bruises later, she was. She was even more determined to succeed now. When she made her third attempt, she tried to remember exactly how much momentum she had gained from her hop from the previous times. And she aimed for something in between the two. Her efforts paid off, and she managed to mount the gelding successfully.

Wild Ride

She didn't have long to celebrate her success. The gelding tensed beneath her, as his ears fell flat against his head. He snorted sharply, and tossed his head. The loud, harsh sound startled Seirei into tightening her grip on the horse's mane as she looked to see what might have upset the creature. And it was a good thing that she did. It took her a few ticks to see a snake emerging from a clump of grass near the gelding's front hooves. As she did, the gelding lost his battle against his terror, and bolted. If Seirei hadn't been holding on tightly, she would have been thrown.

As it was, all she could do was cling desperately to the horse's mane, and pray to any god that would listen that she wouldn't fall off. Controlling the animal wasn't even an option anymore. Even if she had had a chance to learn how to ride, the gelding was well beyond listening to any commands she might give. Falling from the horse when he was moving as fast as he was would probably kill her. So she had to stay on...somehow.

The wind tore at her as the gelding raced through the grass. It stung her cheeks, and whipped her hair around so fiercely that it was impossible for her to see clearly. Seirei could feel the horse's muscles bunching beneath her each time his hooves hit the ground. And each jarring hoof beat threatened to make her loose her balance, and send her tumbling off. So she tried to shift her weight with the horse's movements in ways that would help her keep her balance. But she had no idea what she was doing, or if it was helping. She hadn't fallen off yet, but she felt as if she could at any tick.

Seirei cried out for help, but the wind stole her words away as well as her breath. Besides, who would hear her? Were her friends trying to follow her? They had brought their own striders with them, but it would have taken them time to get to their striders, and mount them. Would they even be able to find her? Would anyone? Even if she did somehow manage to stay on the gelding's back until he stopped running, would she be able to find her way back to Endrykas?

Wild Ride

Seirei's entire world quickly narrowed down to one thing; hold on. If she managed to do so, she might live. If she failed, she would die. It was that simple. Her fingers were numb from the strain of gripping onto the horse's mane. But she was able to twine them into the gelding's mane, and that helped. It made the difference in her being able to cling desperately to the panicked horse's back, and losing her grip.

Time ceased to have any meaning. All that existed was the wind whipping around her, the movements of the horse beneath her, and intense, sharp terror, both her own, and that of the gelding. After a while, a small stream appeared in front of them. Seirei nearly wept with relief. Surely the gelding would have to stop its mad flight now. Only...it didn't. Seirei felt his muscles bunching up beneath her as he gathered himself. Then they were flying. Or, at least it felt that way to Seirei, as the gelding leaped over the obstacle before him.

The shock of the landing nearly threw Seirei. She slipped off of the horse's back. But it held still for several ticks as it recovered from the jump. And Seirei used that time to scramble back up onto the gelding's back. Then they were off and running again. But this time, it seemed to her as if the gelding wasn't moving as fast as he had been before. She could feel his sides heaving beneath her, and realized that he must be getting tired. Would that be enough to calm him down?

Voices. Seirei thought she could hear shouts coming from behind her, but she couldn't be sure of what they were saying, or even if they were real. She ignored them for fear that trying to pick out words over the wind would cause her concentration on trying to stay on to falter. Then there was another horse in front of them, seemingly out of nowhere. A man was riding it, and he positioned himself directly in front of them.

The gelding came to a full stop, sides heaving from its exertions. Seirei slid off of the horse's back bonelessly, grateful that it was over. Then Terrin and Teisaia were there, too. There were more voices, but shock and relief prevented them from registering them fully.

"No, sir. This is all our fault. Seirei wasn't trying to escape. We were teaching her how to ride. The gelding spooked when it saw a snake. There's no way she'd be able to control a panicked horse."

Seirei frowned. Escape? No. She wasn't ready to try and escape yet. To do so now would be suicide. Besides, she would never leave her twins behind.

The man dismounted, and examined her gently. As he did so, he asked her what hurt, if she was dizzy, and several other questions. Seirei answered them as best she could. She was breathless from fear, and her entire body ached. But she wasn't dizzy, or feeling faint. The man helped her to her feet, and introduced himself as being a member of the Watch.

"Someone's going to have to ride double with her. She doesn't seem to be injured badly, or have a concussion, but she's in no shape to try and ride back without help. Especially when she is as inexperienced as you say she is.

It was decided that Terrin would ride double with her. His own strider would follow the others back on its own. Terrin mounted the gelding first. When he was ready, Teisaia helped Seirei back up onto the gelding's back carefully.

"Hold onto my waist, Seirei. I won't let you fall."

Seirei nodded. After a tick, she realized that Terrin couldn't see her gesture, so she agreed, and thanked him softly. Fear made her cling to her friend's back tightly as she felt the gelding began to move. But Terrin kept the horse to a slow, easy walk as they rode back to Endrykas.
