Open Finally a Feast

A large feast is held in celebration of the food gathered and stockpiled for winter. Unwed individuals who have proved themselves worthy throughout the season are introduced to the daughters and sons of many Ankals and take pride of place during the feast. People everywhere tell stories, dance, and sing.

Finally a Feast

85th day of Fall 515 AV
Early evening

Merriment danced in the air as the people gathered. The heart fire was ablaze, offering its warmth to all who gathered. It was here that the feast was assembled, vegetables, stew, whole carcasses of beasts on display in the alcoves of the gathering. Clan heads had, as they did every year, opened their pavilions to the masses, the heat of their cookfires keeping their dishes hot. Each clan had brought their very best. Meat from the Emarald Clan, ale from the Ruby Clan, cheese and dairy from the Amethyst Clan, on and on the list went.

The city teemed with activity, the last touches being put both on food and on costume. Some arrived in their finest dresses, others wore furs and paint on their bodies in show. The drinking had begun long before the food had finished, stories and plays had started early that morning.

With each bell that passed more people arrived to the center of the city, smaller fires popping up to warm the hands of the growing crowd. Animals were mostly left at home, although some dogs and cats strolled in step with their masters, many would be home awaiting scraps from the feasting.

Naiya had begun dressing quite early that morning, the pelts she had stitched together needing finishing touches. She honored the hunters of the city, dressed in the skins of animals that had died to further the good of the people. From her neck hung a new adornment. She had carved the base of three zith teeth with marks of the grass, a reminder of the triumph of the Drykas over the zith, and her own, personal triumph over the zith whose teeth she wore.

Clanless did not mean unwelcome, and for her today that was very clear, watchmen greeted her, children stopped to touch the pelts she wore. Everyone was welcomed to the celebration today.

There was a man near by who had begun to sing, a low bellied sound the deep base of the tune. He was joined quickly by a falsetto voice countering the depth of his bass.

"There was a lad upon the sea, dark of skin and hair was he." The song was a familiar one, the boy struck out into the sea of grass, hunting and foraging gathering all he needed to survive. The tune was a lively one, four beats on the ups and downs. It brought a smile to Naiya's lips as she joined softly with the tune.

"Taller than both you and me, a greater man there could not be!" Her singing was soft, weak in comparison to the voice of the woman, but it pleased her all the same as more than one listener joined in. Naiya glanced around, seeking the sight of Seirei, it was unlikely she had strayed too far beyond. She was unsure how the woman would do in the crowd. Seirei had many good reasons to be unsure of the people.

Seirei looked around, her eyes wide, wary, and anxious. Her posture was tense, nervous. The crowd frightened her. She knew that she was a Drykas now, one of the people that surrounded her. But that didn't make her feel any more at ease. It wasn't all that long ago that she would not have been welcome here. People that greeted her politely now, if they had noticed her at all, would have scowled at her. They might even have challenged her right to be there at a Drykas celebration when, as a captive, she was not Drykas. It was hard to forget the memories of being scorned just for going about her day. Hard to trust the welcome she was given now. Hard to trust at all, except for Naiya, and Shahar, who had welcomed her into their family, and given her a home.

She didn't want to impose on the other woman, but she stayed close to Naiya. Not quite clinging to her as a frightened child might, but not too far from that. Her own costume was a simple affair. With no sewing skills to speak of, she hadn't been able to make anything. But she did wear a rabbit pelt around her shoulders in honor of Shahar, who was a hunter. She also had her detail brush, a chisel, and a necklace made of wooden beads. She felt silly, even arrogant for including her own tools, and creation as part of her costume. But it wasn't meant to honor her. Not specifically, anyway. She was trying to honor craftspeople in general. People like her mother, who devoted their entire lives to their chosen craft. The detail brush was meant to represent painters, and anyone who painted their creations. People who worked with clay, like Terrin, among them.

When Naiya began to sign, Seirei smiled. Her friend seemed to be enjoying herself, and Seirei was glad for that. She couldn't seem to make herself relax enough to truly enjoy herself, but she did like hearing the songs that people sung. Like this one. It wasn't familiar to Seirei, and she didn't know the words. But after a few ticks, she began humming softly in tune to the melody..

Merevaika

ledgerCloak (dyed amethyst, medium wool, fur-lined, embroidered):32gm
Hair styling: 25gm
Copper necklace with polished 2 carat amethyst pendant: 5gm5sm
total: 62gm5sm

Juniper had asked for this meeting, calling her to the feasts with a reward in hand. Merevaika had found herself wanting to impress, deciding to dress up for the occasion. A cloak, a beautiful amethyst colour, deciding to honour her previous clan, to unify her once more. It was lined with fur, some from her own kills, other from those of unknown hunters. It had cost a good price, but would serve her well through winter, warming her.

And, to go with it, the woman who had sold it forced a matching necklace, that hung round her neck strikingly. The gem shone in the light of the fire, a mark of money. She had enough to spend on the little things. Little things like the hair, good money spent on a beautiful piece of knotwork on her hair, bringing the locks up after years of hanging down, loose and free.

She did look striking, even if she said so herself. The lone Drykas held a look of authority, despite having none. A stranger would mistake her as a well-off wife from a rich pavilion, she assumed. She certainly had spent the money to make herself look so.

Juniper was nowhere in sight, and Merevaika lost herself to the festivities, trying her best to mingle among the crowd. Somewhere, someone started a song, and she let herself join in, voice weakly adding to the strong, powerful voices that reigned. The song was an old one, sung throughout generations, Merevaika recognising it from when she was a child.

"Through the grass he made his way, hunting and foraging, night and day," the words came out, in unison with the others. A smile spread to her face, remembering the simple days, the good days.

If only things could still be easy.

She moved around, wandering aimlessly. Merevaika knocked past a young woman, of pale skin and fiery hair. Her chevas mark was familiar, oddly familiar, but the Drykas paid little more attention to it. "I apologise," she grinned "It seems that everyone in Endrykas has decided to visit the celebrations."

Amunet hadn’t really put out she had found grace with Rak’keli and was not sure she wanted to till she figured out how this all worked. The feast tonight did warrant a costume. What better ways to sport a mark then disguise it as a disguise itself. She dug out her mother’s opal robes that she had kept from her mother. It was said it was robes of the opal order. She didn’t know as the opalescent material was perfect. The fit was nearly perfect as it seemed her mother side of the family were petite and slim. It showed off curves she hadn’t anticipated but it was a party after all. The red head pulled her hair back as the opal white robes brought out the shimmer of the mark.

The part of the hair from her temple back was tied with leather. The rest was laid to fall in waves cascading down her back and to her bottom like a blood fiery waterfall. It will have to do. The girl strode out as the drums of the central fire grew louder. Her heart thumped hoping to get some enjoyment out of it without bumping into family or Pratal. The white stood out amongst the dark browns and blacks of the costumes as her own costume disguised the mark in plain view. She started to relax a bit as she stopped and greeted brand new mothers who she had helped birth their babies. She spent time speaking to children she had seen in the clinic and helped them with their little injuries. She made a fuss over them being well.

It’s not like everyone didn’t know she was exiled but today wasn’t about politics. At least she didn’t think so. Behind her she heard a familiar voice.

“They let you in here? It’s a wonder why they let such rabble through.” It was Pratal being the pompous arrogant bottom feeder she knew him to be.

“It’s a celebration of the harvest and successful hunts.” She said with her chin held high as she looked him right in the eyes. “Go hunt your own if you are not happy with how the people did with this harvest.” The girl challenged. Amunet had a way of challenging the very nature of his arrogance.

This irritated the man to no end. He would have grabbed her but she had melted into the crowd as she walked away. His reminder of her exile dampened the growing good mood she had. Moving through the crowd to were the central fire and was greeted with the song starting. Naiya had started and Amunet boldly added her soprano to the mix. Her striking features and white garments reflected the light of the fire and made a dance of their own.

"Come now, Seirei, no one will challenge your presence here." She soothed her sister, the promise of protection in the signs of her hands. She was jovial in her own motions, the large crowd marked with hunters and watchmen reassured Naiya in ways it did not for Seirei. To Naiya it meant they were safe, no threat would make it into this celebration.

"Let's find something to drink, perhaps something a bit stronger than water to soothe your nerves?" She offered, only partly teasing. If nothing else they would eat and then head for home, the food was unlike anything they would find before the next celebration, but beyond that, if Seirei wanted to leave, Naiya would happily follow.

She offered her hand to Seirei, should she desire the extra comfort and security before she moved off into the crowd, attempting to reach the dense collection of ruby tones that promised ale. Naiya turned her head to see how Seirei was fairing, and in her lapse of attention on where she was going she collided with another woman, a mere knocking of shoulders, but worth of an apology that quickly took shape on her shoulders.

The woman too apologized, a grin on her features that promised they needed not worry about the incident. Agreement took shape on her hands as she nodded with the woman's words.

"It's quite nice, isn't it? the reassurance of the crowd and the bounty of our city." Her eyes took in long wavy locks with a number of wraps to go beyond what her soft features indicated. She was decorated in jewels, her hair styled with special care. A woman of the Amethyst clan, but not one she recalled meeting in more than passing.

"We were just going to find something to drink, perhaps you'd like to join us?" She extended the invitation with a careful eye on Seirei, making it obvious that her own opinion was the one Merevaika should seek should she want to come.

Naiya's words of reassurance, and signs of protection helped a little, but she still felt overwhelmed, and anxious. There were so many people. So many loud voices. And Seirei had long since learned that a loud voice meant trouble for her. Trouble, and often a lot of pain to go with it.

When Naiya suggested that they look for something to drink, Seirei smiled shyly, and nodded.

"I'd like that. Thank you." she said softly.

Good idea, Maybe something a little stronger.

Seirei had never tried alcohol of any kind before. After an incident involving drunken caravan guards that had nearly gotten the entire caravan into more trouble than they would have been able to get out of when she was a young child, alcohol of any kind had been banned from the caravan. So she had never had the chance to try it, nor the desire to do so. But she had heard that a small amount of alcohol could settle one's nerves, and Naiya's suggestion seemed to confirm what she had heard. If it were true, she would be willing to try it. She didn't want to spoil the festival for her friend when Naiya seemed to be enjoying herself.

Seirei felt like a ridiculous child for taking Naiya's hand when it was offered. But it didn't stop her from doing so. If she was holding onto something, perhaps she wouldn't give in to the urge to bolt back to the Dawnwhisper pavilion like a frightened rabbit.

It didn't last long. Naiya bumped into someone. Apologies and greetings were exchanged, and Seirei offered a quiet, tentative one of her own. The woman Naiya had bumped into looked vaguely familiar, but Seirei couldn't place where she had seen her before. Or if she really had. It was equally possible that the woman simply looked like someone she had met before.

Seirei didn't know why Naiya looked at her after asking the woman if she wanted to join them. It seemed as if she was asking if Seirei minded if the woman joined them. Seirei was uncertain about the idea. What if the woman knew she was a captive? That she used to be one, at least. Would she accept her the way the other Drykas seemed to? Or would she accuse her of trying to be something she wasn't? Claiming freedom that wasn't hers to claim? Still, Seirei didn't feel comfortable refusing permission for the woman to join them, either. And it was entirely possible that the woman would accept her, and that everything would be fine.

"You're welcome to join us if you want to."

Her posture and tone was hesitant, and uncertain, but she smiled shyly as she spoke, and her offer was genuine.

Merevaika

"Yes, nice," Merevaika echoed, realising that that was the word, the best way to describe it. It was nice, being surrounded by all these people, just celebrating and enjoying herself. After everything that had happened, both recently and not, taking a night off to have a break reassured her in ways she didn't quite understand.

Merevaika signed in agreement to the invitation, even before she had looked to check with the other woman, the other girl, even. Merevaika wasn't one to adapt to others, even if she was trying to. Her eyes flickered to the girl, trying to not appear threatening despite that being her nature. She didn't want her to suddenly disagree, leaving Merevaika a fool. But despite a hesitant, uncertain facade, her answer was positive and Merevaika found herself returning the smile."Let's find that drink then!" she announced, moving towards the scarlet tents, material flapping slightly in the breeze.

Navigating the crowd was difficult, and Merevaika found it hard to resist the urge to just duck down and cut a pouch of clinking free. She didn't need to sink that low. Not with her jewels and cloak and posture. Slowing, the Drykas realised that she didn't know the names of the two others she was with. Turning suddenly, she signed quickly, hoping her hands would catch their eyes before the sign disappeared again. Names? Then, she quickly added her own, realising it was unfair to ask for something without presenting her own first. "I am Merevaika." Many would have found it odd that she refused to name her pavilion, especially since she seemed to hail from a good one. But Merevaika couldn't bare to say the name. Not now. Let the festivities take away the memories of family.

Seirei's acceptance did more to bolster Naiya's mood than the woman's interest in joining them. Meeting a stranger at a festival was common place, and likely they would part and forget one another just as quickly as the festival ended. Seirei's courage, and the possibility of an evening of revelry among the Drykas, feeling like a Drykas, that was worthy of note, something that would hopefully stay with Seirei.

Naiya hooked Seirei by the arm, reaffirming the connection between that had broken once Naiya began to sign. If she had sought the comfort she offered the first time, it was likely the need for it had not dissipated. She smiled at her friend, and winked as she showed her how to bob and weave through a crowd of horsefolk.

The woman signed something at them that Naiya missed in her antics with Seirei, but her words quickly made up for the gap in conversation. "Well met Merevaika." Naiya said with a grin, "I'm Naiya Dawnwhisper, and this is my mana, Seirei." Naiya covered the introduction, introducing Seirei as her sister so there was no pause to question her family despite the difference in appearance.

The introduction, and her covering for Seirei's possible discomfort, reminded her of their purpose, and the crimson tents nearly knocked them over as the crowd tossed them about. Here the people were louder, more... jovial. The social lubrication of alcohol making the party all the more here.

"First round is on me, so long as you don't mind mead?" teasing shaped her hands as Naiya spoke to be heard over the revelry, her body swaying to the music of the bards. She didn't wait for agreement, instead ducking away for mere ticks to grab three mugs of mead.

She returned quickly, hands full, fingers dipping into both her and Seirei's drinks so that she could hold the woman's mug by the side. She passed Merevaika the warm drink, then handed one to Seirei. "It's wildflower mead, made from the nectar of flowers in the grass." Taste sweet, bright. She sipped the brew, stronger than she expected, but drowned out by the sweet floral notes.

Mead was probably her favorite, it was so varied, and the flavor was always so clear. She grinned, eyeing her two companions as she laced her arm back through Seirei's free one. "Merevaika, I gamee your cloak, the furs look so soft. Did you hunt them yourself?" interested, inquiry.

The arm that was linked to Seirei gave a nudge, another smile breaking across her cheeks, "How's your drink?" Like inquiry, too sweet inquiry.

Finally a Feast

Postby Amunet on August 1st, 2016, 5:08 pm

The feast was well under way as she weaved her way through the revelers. The girl obtained a mug of spiced apple cider. Amunet opted out for hard drink to keep sharp as sometimes things happen at these events. The opal robes framed her face and her body quite well as if it belonged on her. There was a look up to the sky and a ‘thanks mom’ signed before her finger went to her lips and she blew a kiss to the star lit heavens before she reached the fire. The opalescence of the mark and her robes shimmered with the light of the central fire.

The girl had both palms around the cup she had of the hot spiced cider as she sipped it. Memories flooded her memory of her family and how they enjoyed these moments. They were starting traditional dance of the time as her older brother tapped her on the shoulder. “ Can I have this dance, sis?”

Amunet’s smile beamed as she turned around. Outside of the pavilion, her brothers tried to keep an eye out for her. “Sure, its been a while though.”

The lively jig started up as couples of various sorts took to the round the fire in the smart quick steps of the dance. Her brother proved an apt dancer to lead her into the simplified version of the dance. Her small feet started to remember the dance as they turned and rounded the fire. Couples were there, those who wished to join were dancing, pavilion wives took on the dance and it didn’t matter if you got the steps right or not. To some it was alcohol induced bravery to ask the nearest girl to go out onto the dance floor and take a spin around the fire.

Amunet was laughing as they tried the spin turn and he had to catch her as she almost fell. This was a people who strongly were one with each other. Every single one of them with their independent streaks and passions that find strength in their abilities, yet was the strongest when everyone came together such as nights like these. Zulrav, Caiyha, Semele, Rak’keli be praised for the bounty, life, health and good fortune for all.
