Who am I?

Image

Vesi Galesong
Female, Spring 67, 499 AV, 17
Svefra from the Suvan Sea

Appearance

If Vesi was the superstitious type - and she is - she would say her looks, while pretty, bring about some misfortune. Her hair is a dull brown, and her eyes are so muted in their blue she was nearly tossed over the side. It is almost as if she was born to hide, which sounds rather shameful to her. The rest of her sticks to this subtlety, with a small frame and very slight curves. Even her freckles are not overt like she would prefer.

To combat this shame, her demeanor is as every bit a Svefra as she can muster. She is unafraid to show off her body, very open in her body language, speaks in an upbeat, if not always loud voice. She doesn't go so far as to stomp about, but every step she takes is one with purpose.

Besides all this, Vesi has Laviku's gnosis stretched across the inside of her right arm. She also has three tattoos that all have personal meaning to her. Her first tattoo is her pod tattoo, taking the cherry blossoms and the sea turtle that signify the Galesongs and combining them in a beautiful way. This one is located above her left ankle. On her right shoulder blade is a tattoo of the Palivar she and her father lived on. And her most recent tattoo, a stylized tattoo of her Tavan, rests center on her torso, just under her breasts.

Personality

Vesi tries her hardest to embody the Svefra way of life and for the most part she succeeds. She enjoys dancing, singing, being with those she cares about, and finding absolute joy in life. However, she finds herself content in the tranquil moments as well, as they are usually the best times to allow Laviku and the other Divines to whisper what she may need to know. She has her own superstitions and sticks rather close to them, and anyone who scoffs at them will quickly find her ire turned towards them. It is thanks to the superstitions and Laviku that she is alive today, and she will not sully them by making light of them.

Vesi does not do very well with being alone. She finds joy and energy in speaking and helping others, and being alone for longer than a few hours stops such positive energy from flowing through her. This usually means that Vesi goes through some desperate measures to keep people with her if she feels she's going to be alone for a day or so. Vesi is also not fond of blunt language. She finds it a delight to speak and cannot grasp why others would not feel the same way. Should she meet anyone who is blunt in their way of speaking, she tries to seize the conversation and ensure that they do not continue to speak.

Character History

Spring 67, 499 AV - Vesi :
Vesi was not always a Galesong. She was born to Tani and Kohalo Saltbreeze, members of a South Suvan pod only ten people strong. Vesi remembers nothing of the pod as a whole, but she has very vague memories of her mother, Tani. Brief flashes of a smile and the splashing of some triangular creature are the closest associations she has to her mother, and though she does not dwell on them, she treasures when they cross her mind. Alas, they are very few memories to treasure, as only three years after Vesi was born, an attack on their pod resulted in Tani's death.

Summer 18, 502 AV - Galesong :
The death of Tani was felt deeply by the whole pod, but no one grieved more than Vesi's father, Kohalo. Every interaction he would have with the pod only resulted in great misery and pain. Eventually, it was more than he could bear, and he made the decision to leave and join another pod. It was with great understanding that the Saltbreeze pod said farewell, but Vesi did not like that she would be losing both her parents so quickly.

So rather than stay with the pod, as was Svefra custom, she stowed away on her father's Casinor as he made his way North. By the time Kohalo discovered her hiding in one of the nooks of the ship, he was already halfway through the Middle Suvan. While Kohalo knew he should have gone back to deliver her back to her pod, a stronger part of him just could not bear to lose her as well. So Kohalo, though disapproving of her behavior, kept her with him as he made his way all the way up to the North Suvan Sea.

It was only days upon their arrival to the North Suvan that they made contact with the Lia of the Galesong pod. She, too, was not very impressed that Vesi abandoned her pod to leave with her father, but after a week of convincing from Kohalo, she eventually invited them both into her pod. From that point, Vesi was practically a Galesong through and through. Though it was obvious how different she was from the flame-haired girls, she was accepted as if she was born into the pod. She was invited on adventures with her peers and elder relatives, and was taught skills like everyone else. The Saltbreeze was little more than a vague memory to her by the time she received her pod tattoo.

Spring, 512 AV - The Storm :
Many years passed in happiness and joy for Vesi, and she quickly grew into the kind of woman she hoped Tani would be proud to have as a daughter. It was not only a growth for her, either. The Galesong pod quickly grew in that time much larger and soon became restless with staying within the Suvan Sea. The Lia eventually announced that they would be leaving the Suvan Sea for new waters, so they could continue to grow and prosper. With great excitement, Vesi enthusiastically prepared her and Kohalo's ship for the trials they would no doubt face as they left the safety of their home territory.

However, there was nothing Vesi could do to prepare for The Storm. It was only a couple weeks after they set sail when they were tossed about by a dreadful storm that could not have come from their harsh but fair Father, Laviku. He may have domain over the sea, but he was not the only one with power. That was all Vesi could think of as she clung for life to the ship, and then to Kohalo once their ship started to sink. With Kohalo gravely wounded, Vesi struggled to keep them above water, then to keep them on an abandoned Casinor she came upon, and then to keep the Casinor afloat long enough for The Storm to pass. Though it felt like centuries, The Storm eventually, finally passed. To her deepest grief, so did Kohalo.

Summer, 512 AV - Alika :
Vesi spent a long time in deep grief. She had no family, no pod left. It had all been taken from her. She was ready to give up hope, to let Laviku take her into his arms as he did for Kohalo, for what was there to live for if one had nothing? Just as she contemplated how to end her life, a manta ray startled her by flying out of the water not thirty feet from her ship. Stunned, she watched the creature jump time and again, occasionally doing a somersault or two. Eventually, the ray's antics lifted Vesi's spirits, and she eventually entered the water to swim with it rather than submit to the sea's cold fate. The time she spent with the ray eventually led her to realize that Laviku had not taken her pod away from her, not completely. Though some deaths could not be avoided, he was not so cruel as to take all his children but her. It would be up to her, she realized, if she ever wanted to see her pod again.

And so, with that, she had a new purpose with her life. She was going to find her pod, or make a new one. She began her way towards Mura, for she knew that if anyone could see her pod or teach her to see, it would be the Konti.

Tavan

Alika is an open ocean manta ray, and is the manta ray that caught Vesi's attention in her depression. The time she spent with Alika brought them closer together and she eventually found that while others in her pod met their Tavan by helping them, it seemed appropriate that she would differ from them once again. She credits him with saving her from her own thoughts, and that he must have been looking out for her intentionally. She believes it was fate that brought them together, and wouldn't be surprised if Alika was meant to be her Tavan since birth.

Who will I become?

Languages

Fluent: Fratava
Vesi began learning this before she even began learning Common, thanks to Tani's guidance.

Basic: Common
Vesi's Common is slightly accented and imperfect. Sometimes she will have to search out the word, even if it's a simple one.

Poor: Kontinese
Ever since she arrived in Mura, Vesi has been surrounded by Kontinese, more than Common. She learns the language from the Konti very slowly, and is pretty sure her accent is atrocious. The only words she recognizes for certain are "Hello," "Goodbye," and "Thank you."

Very little of what Vesi owns has been hers for very long. Either she scavenged it from the Casinor that saved her, or she purchased it from cities on her way to Mura.

  • Starting Package: linen shirt, linen pants, undergarments, boots, jacket
Waterskin
A set of toiletries
  • Starting Package: Comb, brush, razor, soap

Flint and Steel

Heirloom - Kohalo gave Vesi the necklace Tani loved to wear the most often. It's made of gold and has a pendant shaped as a manta ray.

Home

Vesi has salvaged what she can from the Casinor she found, and has named it "Porika", a character from her father's stories who would often lose himself, only to use the stars, a map, or something else to help him find his way back to his pod. She hopes that the good fortune of Porika will transfer to her ship, so that she may find her pod.
