When they got to the lake, Ixzo attacked the fishing kit. Fishing was not a strong point of hers, although she did enjoy the days as a child playing in the Kanduktu Basin. A river was far different of course.

"What's this?" She pulled a wound bit of chord from the small kit, holding it up for Rufio, who was still tending to her horse. The Kelvic had walked alongside her bondmate, forcing her to go much slower than normal to their destination. At least Loha no longer freaked out at the smell of her. Still, she wanted to give her bondsister's strider space, so she wandered over to the river bank, determined to learn how to fish.

They weren't alone at the river, with the city coming so close to this, there were other people who had decided the rare leisure day was worthwhile. Downstream from them, a shrill scream broke the wilderness sounds as a small girl was shoved into the water by her brother. Ixzo's head snapped up before she wrote off the child play, fishing was going to be particularly rough with them making a nuisance. Still, Ixzo didn't say anything, already hearing the chastising from their mother, declaring they should stay with the horses.

Ixzo didn't wear much. She didn't like the restriction of clothing, but today she was limited to a loincloth and a breast wrap, clothes that could easily be slipped in and out of if she needed to transform. She doubted it would be necessary, as she'd much rather get wet as a human than a cat, but the habit was still there. They were also clothes that exposed her tattoos and scars, letting her dark skin absorb the heat of the midsummer day. It was brutal, and the walk had already coated her skin in a slick layer of sweat, all the more reason to be near the water. It was that or baking in their tent with no wish to move.

Giving up on the kit, Ixzo stood up once more, scooping it up in one hand and returning to her bondsister, whistling a quick play-tune. Challenge. "Who catch fish first?" She grinned wickedly, poking her bondmate in the ribs in an attempt to make her laugh. If she had any real intention for catching the fish she might've bought herself arrows meant for water and her bow, attempting to spear one in a way that was familiar. But the idea of a day with no responsibilities was too tempting to give up. Ixzo also knew not to try to bet on things with Rufio. The Drykas was too keen on predicting the outcome, and she always lost, but she couldn't help the competition.

Gone Fishin'

Postby Rufio on July 9th, 2016, 8:09 pm

   Sweat licked down Rufio's back, trickling down the curve of her spine, and the Drykas cussed the thin-wool dungarees that she'd decided to wear.

Though she wore nothing under it, had rolled the legs up to her knees, and gone barefoot, there was not a breeze alight to bring relief.

Loha felt sweaty and hot beneath her thighs too. Rufio leaned forward gently, so that her face was near-behind-beside his thick, arched neck, and she listened to his breaths.

They were steady, and strong, un-tinged by the shallowness that was symptomatic of heat-stroke, or the rapidity of sun-stroke. Satisfied that the stallion was fine, she sat back.

Loha, sensing his rider's shift in weight, coupled with his eying up of the Kelvic in front of him, jerked to a halt suddenly. Rufio swayed on his back and had to grasp the yvas to regain her balance.

"-'Ohhh?..." Her voice wavered uncertainly, before she squeezed her thighs and rocked forward lightly, once, twice. "C'mon, Loha, we're not there yet."

The stallion stomped his foot and tossed out his matted mane stubbornly, his nose jerked in the Kelvic's direction. Rufio glanced at her bond-mate walking leisurely ahead, and sighed in light frustration.

The Drykas laid her hand against the base of his neck, just above his withers and pushed firmly, squeezing her thighs and clicking her tongue in unison.
      Command: forward.

The stallion hesitated, resisting with his own will testing, then snorted, and acquiesced, stomping his fore-hooves louder than usual as he followed after the Kelvic.

It never struck Rufio, but it was amazing how much more confidence she had gained over the seasons, since the pirate attack. The loss of her family had wrought strength in her—and now with Ixzo in her life...

Rufio's subconscious thoughts danced to her bond-mate, as they often did beneath the wavering surface, and her gaze took in the woman's deep, ebony complexion, the shape of her human form—the resilience, and passionate spirit she carried with her.

Without knowing, a smile had melted into her freckled features, chasing her frustration-induced low-brow away. Her discomfort in Syna's intense heat forgotten, the tinge of excitement flickered as she thought about the fishing ahead.

 Rufio had never taken up fishing—she'd never had the patience to sit and sit—but her bond-sister had seemed excited to try. When they got there, she dismounted—
           "What's this?"
   —Rufio heard Ixzo query, busy rubbing Loha down with a wet rag, to cool him off. The Drykas peered over her shoulder at the cord the Kelvic held out and shrugged.
     "To catch fish?" Humour, teasing, sarcasm. The Drykas teased, before she giggled- "I guess we'll stick it in the water and see what bites." Excited, curious.

The Drykas watched her bond-sister go down to the water, while Rufio led Loha by his mane to the banks a little ways up, tempting him to drink.

Her father had once told her that horses in high heat don't know they are thirsty until they are already dehydrated, so Rufio stood by the Strider and pushed his head gently towards the water whenever he veered to wander off.

When a child upstream screamed, the stallion started, Rufio too. He neighed and kicked up mud, lashing out his tail. Rufio took a step back, narrowly missing having her toes trampled, before she laughed and grabbed his neck, pulling his head into her hands.

She made soothing noises and lifted a handful of grass to his nose.
     Safe, safe, hush. "Loha."
        The stallion pulled his face free of her hands and then wandered up the river bank to graze by himself instead. An affronted Rufio made a face at the horse's rump, and wandered towards Ixzo instead. Her bare feet sunk into the cool, damp river-bank, and she sighed appreciatively at the sensation.

    "Who catch fish first?"
Rufio recognised the wicked grin, the playful challenge in her bond-sister's sign as the Kelvic poked her side. The Drykas squirmed to the side, ticklish and giggling, and returned, rising to her playful challenge-
      "Wanna bet?!"
        Feeling lucky, challenge!

Morning: Adan Pavillion.

Brocton woke up earlier this morning. He yawned and strecthed as he crossed his legs whilist moving up in a sitting position. His parents were still sleeping, Philly is usually up earlier than Broc so she was gone already doing whatever. The camp fire smell wafted through his tent, slowly starting to wake him up.

The smell smelt good. So Broc carefully for up and avoided stepping on his parents. He went out to investigate. Sure enough, he didn't notice his mother was gone. "Mother..." He started slowly. He rubbed sleep from his eyes.

"Hey sweetheart." She said looking up from her cooking pot that was located just over the camp fire. "You hungry? I'm making some stew from the left over foods that we have from hunting. Perhaps you can take Jinr' up to go fishing... I know it's not your strong suit. But, your father had purchased some fishing gear late last night. You should go check it out. It's by our tent." She said pointing over to it with a smile.

"Fishing..." The blonde replied slowly. "I never learnt how to." He responded. He wasn't too excited about it either.

"Don't worry. Jinr' might know a little of fishing. after all, he goes with his friends some times. When he's out. Best you take him." De'anu said. She waved him off and Broc trekked over to Jinirs' tent. Broc calls out. "Jinr'. You there?" He said aloud for his cousin to hear.

"Yeah..." He responded slowly.

"You know how to fish?" Brocton asked. The flap opened almost instantly.

"Yes, what is it you want? To fish..." He said slowly. Jinr' rubbed sleep from his eyes like Broc did when he awoke just not to long after.

"Yes. No doubt. You can show me, right?" He asked Jinr'.

"Sure." Sid Jinir. "Just let me go grab my gear and we can head out. Bring your Strider to. We'll be over at the Vaspura River. Okay."

Off they went.

~~~~~
Later through the day.
Broc rode on Jinx. He had his shortbow.with him, it was strapped around the Yvas. His Longsword that was belted to his waist. Fishing poles, and a fishing kit. Jinr' carried the bait. It was simple worms. "How about we fish over there. By those two. They look like they have something." Said Jinr'.
"Sure, but maybe we can stay away from them. I don't like being around other people much Jinr'." Broc responded harshly as he watched the two girls. Jinx whinnied, followed by a snort. The Vaspura River sounded heavy. The water rushed on by through the Sea of Grass as today became hot and musty.
"And let's not stay to long." Broc dismounted Jinx. He retrieved the fishing poles and handed one to Jinr'. He started to feel like a kid. It was alright, but to be honest he didn't like Jnir' much. He didn't like a lot of other people much. But, Jinr' was family and so he respects him.as much as Jinr' respects Broc.
"Alright I have the bait. Let's hook em' up." He said with a smile. He took out a worm and started to bait it. Broc watched him intently. "Here. Take the worm. Then make sure that that worm is wrapped around that hook tight enough so that you don't miss it when it flies off the hook. If it does." Broc nodded. He watched Jinr' as he prepared for his cast.
"Now, casting. When you cast the line. Be sure to be careful when you lift the rod over your head. Stand a few feet away if need to." Jinr' instructed. "Like this." He swung the pole back, letting the line loosen up before he casts it. Then, he pulled forward and released the line. The bait landed with a sudden tap as the worm made contact the water.
"That's a little difficult." Responded Broc as he attempted to bait the worm on the hook. "What's with the worms?" Be asked. As he managed to get it on after dropping it a few times.
"They're used for bait. Like I said. The fish enjoy it. It's sort of like a fishes favorite snack." Responded Jinr'.
"Now pull back the rod and cast it. Be careful of the worm. It might come loose."
After a tick of decision, Ixzo shuffled down the steep bank, and took a careful dip in the river with one of her big toes. The water was barely chilly, the upper currents well heated by the Summer sun. It wasn't until she daringly placed her entire leg into the running current that she gasped at the cold. Well. She should have expected that. There was a whinny of a horse a ways away, but Ixzo paid it no mind, spinning to look back at Rufio.
"Water is good!" She gave a thumbs up to Rufio as if she was fooling her. She wasn't sure if her bond-sister wanted to stay onshore or be in the water. Ixzo was likely to infuriate any fisherman around by making a splash, although the children downwind from them have already succeeded in doing so.
But this was running water, unlike the Kanduktu Basin, and so she doubted the fish would do much but swim around the intruders, since they really had nowhere else to go. Her toes dug into the soft grass at the bottom of the clear river, and once she got her other foot in, she found the water swelled up past her belly button, wetting the tight breeches but not yet reaching her breast wrap. Although it was warm near her belly, her feet were already freezing, which conflicted her reaction to being in the water.
Her attention was torn away from Rufio when a dragonfly shot past, and Ixzo swirled in the water to follow it with her gaze, suddenly aware of the completely different ecosystem around her. She was so used to the world and the grasslands above, that she didn't realize all she was missing. Her toes were woven between long slimy river grasses, but the dirt beneath was hard, with no threat to give way beneath her. There were fish darting beside her ankles, paying absolutely no mind to the sudden creature in their way. Just atop the water's surface, little black bugs swirled around, fighting the current and eating even small fly-like things. Another dragonfly interrupted her vision and she spun again, following it to see the fronds of some water plant on the other steep bank. It took her a moment, but her excellent feline vision found the frogs and lizards that clung to the long leaves, resting in the shade to escape the noon heat.
"Ru." Ixzo spoke softly, distractedly, as her eyes narrowed on a large frog that rested between the thick stocks of the water plants. Frogs were just as good as fish in a meal. Gently she stepped forward in the water, finding her hips slipped through the current without breaking waves. Turning her hands before her in a 'W', she was about to close in on the frog, when something splashed beside her, starting the creatures immediately surrounding her and herself.
"Hey!" She yelled immediately, pouting at Rufio, thinking the line had come from her. "I was to get that." She stuck her bottom lip out like a child, far to engrossed in the fun of the day to remain her usual feirce and stoic self, it was just her and Rufio after all, today was fun!
rufio was untangling the fishing cord with nimble fingertips, oblivious as her bondmate waded into the river water. Her bare feet sunk into the riverbank a little, the grasses soft against her ankles, the mud sticky between her toes.
"Water is good!"
    Ixzo's enthusiasm piqued the Drykas' attention, who looked up and smiled, peering at the glistening water with longing. Syna's heat was seering across her shoulders, her skin prickling lightly.
Bbzpp! As the dragonfly sped past the kelvic, the Drykas crouched and plunged her hands into the shallows of the river. The water was pleasantly lukewarm here, as Ixzo promised
"Hmm." Rufio's appreciative sigh thrummed
Dragging handfuls of mud up through the water, Rufio slathered it along the tops of her arms, up across her shoulders and down her shoulder-blades, wincing at the cold, sticky sensation. Natural sun-screen to protect her skin from Syna's generous Summer touch.
When she stood, her gaze was caught by Ixzo in the waters. The Bond pulsed with the kelvic's wonder—the way that she was absorbed by the sounds, and sights, and sensations of the flora, the river-culture, surrounding her.
Rufio took in a breath, her freckles shifting as they alit with a smile. As if peering through another lens—The Bond maybe—the feline image of Ixzo The Big Cat standing in the waters flickered vibrantly over her Myrian visage—curious, exploring, stalking.
Rufio never admitted it (likely never would) but she was in awe of Ixzo's feline form. Night lions were deeply respected by all Drykas—for their ferocity, power, agility, and their Pride. That is, their instinct for community, and surviving the Grasslands.
Every so often, like in this chime it resonated in her—that a Night-lion had chosen her to Bond with, that she slept curled up into the lioness' ink-black fur, and found comfort in her presence—that this had become so a part of her life now, it felt...magical. When it did strike her, in these rare, rare moments when she watched Ixzo and saw her.
"Ru."—Ixzo spoke softly, as her eyes narrowed on a large frog that rested between the thick stocks of the water plants.
"Mmm...?" Rufio hummed, distracted.
She was busy knotting serrated-bone fishing hooks onto the untangled chord. At first she tied one to the end and let the hook hang, swinging. With furrowed brow she pondered on her fishing tool a moment, and then shook her head.
        That didn't look right.
    Rummaging in the fishing kit, the Drykas found more hooks, and presumed to tie each hook along the chord at intervals.
 Maybe they could string the chord across the river?
S P L A S H !
  "Hey!" Rufio started as Ixzo yelled immediately, and looked up to take in her Bond-Sister's pout in surprise. "I was to get that."
When the Myrian cast off her usual fierce, stoic self and stuck her bottom lip out like a child, Rufio couldn't help but laugh.
The Drykas dunked her arms into the river, gasping with shock at the cold in the deeper patches—discovering her Kelvic's sneaky deception about its temperature—and splashed a torrent of water at Ixzo playfully. Amidst laughter, she argued—
    "—Wasn't me!"
As Ixzo responded, Rufio glanced downstream, following the length of fishing line that had ruined Ixzo's frog-catching plots until her ochre eyes found Brocton and his fishing teacher-for-the-day.
The freckled, crop-haired Drykas stood in the river, peering at them curiously. They looked like they knew how to fish, better than she and Ixzo at any rate.
Brocton cursed under his breath as he saw the line cast past the two girls down the river. He was relieved how the hook hadn't caught onto either of them. Jinr' sighed.
"That was good cast, but need practice." He said. Jinr' looked disappointed Brocton. Though Brocton was just learning, Jinr' feels that he should be able to accomplish anything as soon as Brocton learnt it. Though Brocton isn't that kind of person, and no one is. The world of Mizahar does not need to revolve around what Jinr' wants. The hunter pulled back the line, being weary of the hook as he was pulling it back, he headed over to the two girls.
"I apologize." He said putting the pole on the ground. 'Learning.' He admitted through signing. If the two looked closely, they can notice that Brocton has yet to receive his Windmarks, as he's still working on Bonding with his Strider. Jinx is a stubborn and unruly steed, but she still has sense and companionship. She understands Brocton as well, which makes him feel comfortable with riding and spending time with her. Jinr' continued to fish behind the group as Brocton engaged conversation.
"I'm, Brocton, Brocton Firestone, of the Firestone Pavilion, Emerald Clan. You two are?"
Her instincts did not kick in, as Ixzo thought it impossible for Rufio to hurt her, so the Kelvic got a mouthful of icy water before she realized who had done it. Gasping in hot air once more, she clasped her hands together and threatened to splash back, but was distracted by Rufio's gaze. Her previously playful expression hardened back into shielded indifference as the other Drykas approached, leaving his partner behind. Brothers, maybe cousins. For all Ixzo knew they couldn't have been related at all. She could tell little how the humans related to each other, and even less so with the pale skinned ones.
But the Kelvic was less interested in how they related, than what the man was saying, apologizing. She relaxed her shoulders just a bit, but still found herself wading closer to Rufio. As he spoke, she realized the Drykas before her was somehow different. The hunter didn't waste time finding that he lacked the ink which told he bonded with a Strider, and it comforted her for some reason. She was still slightly below him in ranking, as she was not born Drykas, but Rufio was more Drykas than he, by the law. What could he say against them?
Her evaluations turned out to be far off, as he was amiably introducing himself, and Ixzo glanced at Rufio to see how her sister was viewing him, deciding she had to relax. He was no threat, this was a friendly introduction between two parties on a leisure day. Relax. She thought to herself, placing two hands square on the bank allowing her hunter's muscles to pull herself up with little effort, crouching into a squat beside Rufio to let her do the talking rather than speak up herself.
