Deliath Telori

~
2nd Fall, 516
Deliath had packed her backpack with a few necessities, including a water skin she'd half filled with water, and pulled it on, wedging a spade between the backpack and her back so that it wouldn't fall or be stolen without her knowledge, before she left her home at the eighth chime and headed through the city of Sunberth towards the South Woods.
It was bright, and the sun shone warmly, but there was still a hint of coolness in the air. It was definitely Bala's season now!
Backpack Contents6 glazed clay jars
Cutting Tool
Grinding Tool
1 Days Worth of rations
Water skin half filled with water

She walked quietly but quickly, and obviously with a purpose, and it seemed that nobody really paid attention to her, apart from the few that bumped into her and slid their hands into her pockets, only to find that they were empty. She rarely carried money on her, and if she did it was always hidden away somewhere in the lining, or in her undergarments, not just left in pockets.

She couldn't help but smile as she nodded to several people as they passed, occasionally stopping to comment on the weather, or to compliment the odd person on their hat, or their cane, or even their hair.
It wasn't long before she has reached the southern edges on Sunberth and she could see the Southern Woods.
She sped up her pace, until she was in the woods, the city obscured from her view by trees, making her feel as though she was in a whole other place.
The woods were quiet and still, only disturbed by the occasional rustle of leads as a few woodland creatures fled from the blonde woman and others just continued about their business.
She wasn't here for them though. She was here to collect some plants, well, parts of the plants that she could use, to turn into teas and salves, and to further her medical knowledge!
Of course, she knew a lot of these plants would be poisonous, but she stood a chance of utilising those poisons, and others would have no effect whatsoever. But some plants could stand a chance at being useful to her, being something she could use.

Grinning, she glanced around, keeping her eyes peeled as she crouched down, checking each of the plants near the ground.
Most of them she couldn't recognise, and most of the few she did recognise weren't of use to her, but it wasn't long before she spotted a few mushrooms growing from the root of a tree.
They were red with white specks on them, and she could recall learning that mushrooms like this were poisonous, although rarely fatally so.
"What was your name..." she spoke quietly to herself. "Something to do with flies? Fly Avarice? No... Fly Agave? No... Fly Agaric? That might have been it!" she smiled softly as she pulled her backpack off and grabbed both her cutting tool, and one of the six jars, before holding the jar near the mushroom and using the cutting tool to remove the mushroom from the ground and push it into the jar, being careful not to touch it with her bare hands.

Oona had been in Sunberth for a full twenty-four bells now. The city had swallowed the Myrian whole, confusing her beyond all measure with its buildings (however shoddy the structures) and its general populace.

And so far, Oona of the Patient Shadows was not impressed. The barbarian city was worse than she had even imagined, this despite all of the tales told of the world beyond Taloba. Disease, famine, disobedience. There was clearly no respect between the people of Sunberth, not like in Taloba where all people were united under their Goddess Queen. The people in Sunberth, however, were like rats; fighting amongst themselves. Each had his or own beliefs that were guarded against all others. There was no unity, only rivalry.

The only ties between Sunberth’s people seemed to exist between families. This at least managed to restore an ounce of faith in Oona; family seemed to be as important here as it was in Taloba. But the families were much smaller, and seemed to be scattered throughout the city proper.

Then there the gangs.

Oona had, as yet, experienced no interaction with anyone tied to any of the Sunberthian gangs, but as she understood it, these ties were not always made obvious. The barbarian sailors she had travelled with from Falyndar to Sunberth had explained it to her by using various pieces of dried fruit (part of their rations) to represent the biggest gangs. There was the Sun’s birth (ridiculous name, Oona had thought, as if anyone could give life to Syna herself), which had been represented as oranges. “Prob’bly the biggest of three, and certainly the richest,” Oona had been told, “got their own military called the Dragoons, and the original Sun’s Birth were a bunch of Syliran knights turned rogue.” The prospect of a militaryman or woman turning their backs on their army disgusted Oona beyond all reason. She had been a dedicated warrior in Myri’s own army for three years. And though they had been gruelling, Oona had done her service with great pride.

“Dagger ‘ands are just a bunch of thugs, really. Mindlessly violent, hungry for control. I wouldn’t piss on one even if ‘e were on fire.” Finally, the sailors had moved onto the third gang, the one that had sparked Oona’s attention the most, “the Night Eyes… Nobody really knows anythin’ about them, ‘cept they’re pretty secretive and don’t like bein’ identified as what they are. Bit like owls, I think, in that they’re busy at night.”

Like my clan, Oona had thought, though the very idea of comparing her family of skilled hunters and warriors to a bunch of barbarian thugs was an uncomfortable thing to do.

And now here she was, escaping the stinking city at the first opportunity she’d had. Oona was exhausted; tired from travelling but filled with an uneasy restlessness. Being aboard a ship filled with barbarians was one thing, but now she was surrounded by them. The Myrian had not removed her weapons for the duration of her time in the city; she had even fallen asleep last night sat upright on the lumpy straw bed with her back against the headboard, dagger clutched to her chest. The consequence of her paranoia was a sore back and stiff legs, but better that then being killed by a barbarian.

Perhaps she was giving the Sunberth denizens too much credit, but Oona was not willing to find out. In this city of mindless sin, the Myrian warrior was determined to watch her back, to survive.

The thin woodlands beyond the city were as disappointing as Sunberth proper. Oona’s lips curled upwards in menacing disgust as she prowled, picking her way over dried leaves and broken twigs. This land was as unlike her jungle home as the oceans had been. Less open and blue than the sea, yes, but no greener or lush. Bare. Hungry was an apt word for it, Oona decided.

She had come only armed with her kris dagger, as the Myrian had not planned to hunt whilst she was out exploring. But now she felt ill at ease in this open land. With one hand on the hilt of her dagger, Oona broke into a jog. Her feet were placed carefully, but with more haste than before. When her foot caught on a stick, she almost fell over but managed to catch herself at the last tick. The Myrian ran on, feeling more hunted than ever before.

Deliath Telori

~
Deliath had succeeding in collecting the red mushroom, without touching it with her bare skin, and had sealed the jar again before placing it into her backpack.
She shifted the backpack back onto her back and once again wedged the shovel between the backpack and her back, before beginning to inspect a few other plants in the area.

"It looks like Caiyha could use a little help here..." she spoke softly to herself. For all it was fall and she had found some forms of fungus, the place was more barren than she had wanted, and it seemed lifeless to her.
It was a shame really, but she was glad that she was here, that she could at least try to collect a few samples, provided she didn't destroy the plants and fungus.

As she moved slowly through the woods, she came across a patch that had trees so bare that a bright stream of sunshine made its way to the ground, and in front of her grew a plant that was looking past its best. It was fall after all, so she hadn't expected everything to be in bloom, or in good shape. She was just happy to have found something.
The plant was tall, with some white flowers, and a few dark purple berries. It was pretty, and she had the feeling that the berries were either poisonous, or medicinal.

"I feel as though I recognise you from somewhere... A book maybe? Or something somebody told me? Maybe elderberry? I'll have a look in the library for a few references tomorrow..." she mumbled, before grabbing the cutting tool, and another jar from her bag.
She was careful to remove only one cluster of berries, leaving enough for any animals, and enough to allow the plant to produce seeds and spread itself further throughout the woods. Once she had cut the cluster of berries, carefully separating it from the plants she took the time to slowly remove the berries from the stems, taking the time to make sure she didn't damage any of them, before placing the berries into the second of her jars, before sealing it and placing everything back into her backpack and onto her back.

Sighting, she realised she was beginning to get thirsty and slightly hungry, so she started walking again, this time looking fir somewhere that she could sit to eat. Possibly a fallen down tree, or a boulder of sorts? Even a tree with a wide trunk would work for her.
It wasn't too long until she found somewhere suitable.
It was a wide tree, possibly an oak, with thick roots that lay a few inches above the ground, one of which was wide enough for her to sit on comfortably.

Grinning happily, she sat down and rested the shovel next to her, before rummaging through her backpack for the rations.
She was glad for the rest and the food, and sat in silence, admiring the forest around her as she ate a small fraction of her rations, before grabbing her water skin and taking a quick drink from it.

"Caiyha's handiwork is beautiful... Even in a place like this..." she mused softly before heading the sound of something quickly moving closer and closer.
Deliath felt her chest tightening and her breathing quicken. In the city she expected people running places, or sneaking up on her but the woods were so quiet. It made everything seem so much more threatening. She didn't know whether it was a person, or some sort of violent animal

It wasn't long before the jogger came into sight and Deliath exhaled a sigh of relief. The source of the noise was a young woman, with dark skin and dark hair.
She was beautiful and Deliath couldn't help but watch her for a bit, before calling out to the woman.
"Hi there! Nice weather today!" she called out cheerily, before taking another swig of her water and a bite of her food. "The woods are quiet, you almost gave me a heart attack. I wasn't expecting anybody else to be out here!" her voice was still as cheery as ever, although she was very curious about the girl, and slightly apprehensive about the stranger.
