That list certainly is helpful for giving us an idea of what our options are. I really appreciate having it as a reference. Thank you!
Also, a quick announcement. After some soul searching, I've retooled Evangeline's concept into being a doctor as I figured:
- We need one.
- It makes more sense for a frontier settlement.
Everyone, meet Evangeline 2.0!

That's beautiful, Goss. It's really eye-opening to see the level of diversity in the jungle, and how much we can really get naturally. I also adored the little author's note at the end. I won't post my own views here because I'd not like to start anything, but it meant a lot to me. Thanks to everybody who worked on it. It'll be a great addition to the creation of Syka.
As a side note, I am going to send Urkut hunting soon, so if anyone would like to help form a party, just pop me a message. She's mainly going to be doing ground animals, but anyone is welcome to put in requests...for a price.

Salutations all,
So, new around to Syka, just wanted to stop by and say hello. I'm really loving all of the development I've been reading - you guys are doing an awesome job. And here I thought everything had been done, heh.
Keep up the good work, and I'll see you guys around. Feel free to PM should you ever want to thread or plot or such, or catch me in chat.
Happy writing,
- M.S.

Thank you and thank you, Gossamer. I'll be the first to attempt to answer these questions, so here I go.
1. Does my character have the skills to survive here?
- I believe so, yes. In terms of "get food, sleep safe, don't die" solo survival, I think Mercer's decently well-off. With Oceanus, it wouldn't be TOO hard to teach himself fishing (or more, guiding a few fish into his net for food), and he can sleep easy enough on his casinor. Being a Svefra, he wouldn't have too much trouble should another happen upon him. Being attacked by creatures is a different matter, however; with no weapon skills and only Oceanus to keep him safe, he'd be dead to rights if he was ever attacked on land, and in the Suvan Sea, he'd have a bit of a chance to survive. Better than on land, but slim.
In terms of "get money to survive", I think he would be also pretty well-off. With Competent in Sailing, he could hire on with the Veronica and aide in the supply runs James does every season. Without the Syka Mercantile and the opportunity to be hired on to the Veronica, he'd be slightly useless elsewhere; it'd take a good bit to be good enough to be a fisherman, but he could do it if he put his mind to it.
2. Does my character have the equipment to survive here?
- Yes, he does. A casinor to sleep and fish on, his father's fishing kit and a random but very usable fishing net, as well as other useful day-to-day items, his equipment is squared off.
3. How is my character getting here? Be realistically creative.
- Not very creative, but his father's old casinor, The Whore's Coin. (Don't ask where the name came from.)
4. What can my character's presence contribute to the setting?
- A wise somewhat-young man quite well-fitted for a coastal location. I think instead of really altering or anything of that sort, he'd enhance the setting by being a good fit for a beach. Plus, if some things I'd like to happen do actually go through, he could be doing a decent service to Syka in the way of "spreading the word".
5. What is my motivation for my character being here?
- 1, I love beaches and coastal locations and the ocean and marine creatures of all sorts. I'm from California, so I learned a ton about that very early in life. 2, since Syka is relatively new or so I've heard, I would absolutely LOVE to be part of it's building phase and even get Mercer to be a well-known and well-respected settler.
6. What does my character want out of his/her Syka experience?
- He wants to spread his love of the sea to all of his mortal kin as well as help make Syka as awesome as he know it can be. Plus sailing and sea creatures and the possible chance to meet other Svefra.
-------------------------
So, there you go. I tried answering the questions as deeply and well-thought as I could, but it's not perfect, of course.
I can't wait to read any of my fellow player's own responses. See you guys around.
Edit: By the by, there is an IC reason for the name of his ship. Not just something I thought would be cool. Feel free to ask about it IC, but expect an awkward answer, haha.

Does my character have the skills to survive here? I believe so. As a Kelvic, Izu blends well with nature, but I don't think that gives her a pass for surviving in the jungle. So aside from that I like to think she isn't pathetic at defending herself. As some people will have noticed, I've been trying to get her local skills up such as swimming and practical cooking.
Does my character have the equipment to survive here? She's brought weapons and some cooking supplies. Other than that, shelter is easier to obtain as an animal.
How is my character getting here? Be realistically creative. I did a whole segment about my travels here. I took some pitstops along the way as Syka wouldn't have such an expansive trade route yet. Izu did a leg on Wind Eagles and two legs on ships.
What can my character's presence contribute to the setting? Steady food and drink supply. Izu's primary purpose should be preparing the wide variety of supplies into something edible, but she will also be out and about, scrounging up food stuffs. Her shop will also provide a common place for gathering and socializing, like the Commons but with refreshments.
What is my motivation for my character being here? Be a part of building up a city/community and to experience writing a buisness owner.
What does my character want out of his/her Syka experience? New knowledge, new shinies, a healthy buisness, and an answer to what she has been looking for. |
