Silk Appearance Race: Vantha Gender: Male Age: 26 Birthday: Spring 2, 490 Birthplace: Avanthal Appearance: Short for a male of his race, standing at a little under 5'5", Marcoh has fair skin, violet eyes that change with both his mood and the light, and the slightest hint of dimples on his cheeks. Character Concept Silk is a blind Aurist and botanist Character History For as long as he could consciously remember, he had been blind. Some people say it was a curse, others said it was his mother, in a fit of drunken rage, who had somehow harmed him and blinded him. Others still say it was both. Marcoh, Silk, as he now calls himself, or Ambar, or Radek, depending on what's needed, can still hear the whispers sometimes: "Oh, dear... Poor child..." or perhaps "Freak of nature, his mother... I'm surprised he made it out of there alive." But what they didn't know was that Silk could see just as well as others. In fact, although his was of a different sort, his vision was often better than that of the people around him. He could see the auras given off by everything around him, and through years of training, was eventually able to echo-locate, much like bats or dolphins. He was a beggar, yes, eating off the good graces of others, but after a while, he realized this second sight that he now was forced to use, could help him earn his keep. So he got a job as the assistant of a botanist in Avanthal's Frostfawn Hold. He earned money so that he could eventually open his own small business. While learning under the botanist, Silk learned to distinguish plants, not only by touch and smell, but by the aura that each plant gave off. He learned to examine more, not less, and that even though he may be blind, he need not give way to misery and despair, as hopeless as things may seem for him. Now, however, Marcoh travels the world, selling, buying, and offering his services as he can. He owns a tent and many small baubles that he keeps in the saddlebags of a packhorse. So I really don’t like putting down a red ‘X’, but I want you to seriously consider your basic character concept as a blind aurist before proceeding to roleplay.


1. Blind Aurist: First, I’d like to point you to a vlog that explains auristics in further detail and specifically mentions the example of what it would be like to be a blind aurist. Here is Tarot’s vlog on the subject.

Basically, while you do have the ability to detect auras, if you are blind then you cannot detect them with your eyes (because you’re blind). So you could sense auras through other means (touch, smell, potentially taste), but auristics is not a ‘second sight’ if you don’t have functional eyes.

If this is the sort of character you want, then by all means roleplay them. Just make sure you keep to their abilities. Also, echo-location is not a very plausible ability for someone who is blind. Maybe you could consider having a NPC who is often with Silk to help him out visually. Maybe you find a PC who would be with Silk a lot. Or maybe he just manages to get by with his walking stick.

2. Novice/Competent Skills: Please note that you only reach a competent skill level at 26 experience points. So Botany (20) and Auristics (25) would both be novice skills at the moment.

3. Racial bonus: Every race gets a racial bonus (RB) to their skills. For Vantha, this is 10 experience in Carving OR Storytelling. Please denote this as 10RB in the desired skill, and mark all your other skill points as SP (for ‘starting points’).

4. Possessions: Please pick a Coat OR Cloak.

5. Housing: There are a couple of different housing packages, including one with a tent and supplementary supplies. However, remember that in Avanthal it is cold, and cold almost all the time. You might not want to be living in a tent in Arctic/tundra conditions unless you have Morwen’s gnosis mark.

6. Racial Gnosis: As a Vantha, you can have a racial gnosis mark from Morwen. Morwen (goddess of winter) typically marks Vantha when they come of age. It helps Vantha tolerate the cold and manipulate ice to a small extent. If you would like this starting gnosis, please make an application at the Help Desk (HD), and you’ll receive a Storyteller Secrets (SS) thread to include as part of your profile.
