Might be a normal hunt... might not...

The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

There was a tune floating on the wind. Zulrav was singing a love song for Semele that spoke of her beautiful skin and warm embrace. Those who knew how to listen could feel the emotion as it raked across their skin and tossed their hair leaving only pleasant memories of encounters that make men sweat and women blush. It raised awareness that there was an appreciation to be had for knowing love, even if it was fleeting. The whistling gusts brought refreshment to the burdened causing a sigh of relief as tired eyes closed for a moment. Somewhere there was humming that seemed to mimic the Father of Storms in his serenade. The sweet tones laced into the swirling air with a grace that didn’t cheapen the expression nor detract from its beauty. One man watched the subtle heaving of a tanned chest as it produced the notes without a care for the rest of the world.

“Shhh!” A brutal hiss broke the melody and drew all of the immediate focus to a middle-aged Drykas. His dark eyes bore into the young woman; the source of the humming. She turned her emerald gaze in his direction and rolled the orbs in manner to suggest frustration but she quieted nonetheless. Two young men crouched near the pair simply watched the interaction. One was tall and thin, his hair was long and wavy with a few wraps tied in and he bore a simple windmark along his side. He clutched a spear in one hand and two more in the other. His eyes never strayed from the girl. There was no doubt in the mind of the rest of the group that he was captivated by the young maiden. The other young man was a bit shorter but much larger in build. He was scarred along his shoulder, neck and face and his arm was covered in a very intricate windmark depicting several milestones in his life. He watched the girl and the older man but with a detached observance that could only be classified as educational.

Azmere crept over next to the older man and apparent leader of the venture. The dark eyes were tracing something but the younger man could not follow the gaze. As the wind continued to blow the blades of grass against one another, the hush that was so calming suddenly became a bit unnerving. Azmere was the archer in the group but Tyrael was the leader of them. His age, experience and resolve were unmatched amidst the youngsters; though Krysta might be more stubborn her father. Paedon was the youngest and he was only along because Asmodeus insisted that the neighbor boy be allowed to follow Azmere on his hunt. Last winter, Tyrael’s oldest son was killed by a spearback and since then their small pavilion has had trouble keeping food in their bellies. When the old storm warden heard this, he approached Tyrael and offered his grandson, Azmere, as a hunter to assist until something more permanent could be arranged. Tyrael hesitantly agreed to terms that paid Azmere half of what a hunter should make. The young man argued but did as his ankal instructed which is why he was sitting flank to Tyrael.

The older man motioned ahead for the others to watch. Azmere turned his head and stared out into the expanse of tall grasses. In the valley, there was very little in the way of landmarks so it wasn’t like he could point at an object but Azmere and the other two scoured the landscape for whatever caught the older man’s attention. Suddenly, Azmere saw it. He brought his legs beneath his body into a tight crouch and retrieved an arrow from his quiver.

As a child, he often used a traditional grip which utilized the thumb, index and middle fingers. They acted as a vice against one another and while it offered a good deal of control, it was clumsy on horseback and a might slow for the Drykas’ taste. He began to experiment and started using his thumb almost exclusively. With a piece of leather, he fashioned a ring on his thumb that allows him to draw an arrow and lay it on the thumb side of the bow. The thumb slides under the notch and the index finger wraps over the top of the shaft and thumb. The ring worn on his thumb catches the string on the pull. It took some getting used to but was far faster of a draw and load especially over trying to grasp an arrow between the index and middle fingers. The only difference is with the traditional draw and grip, the arrow is fired from eye level. The thumb or ring draw is fired from chest level. The sighting is essentially the same because a true archer always holds his bow arm straight.

Tyrael placed his and on the arm of the scarred man. Azmere hadn’t removed the arrow yet and the contrasting gaze of blue and gold looked to the older man with a silent question. The more experienced hunter gave a nod in understanding and began to sign with Pavi as well as giving directional signs. Azmere followed closely to the instructions as did Krysta and Paedon. The idea was simple and it made sense to Azmere. He was to visit the web to make sure the creature was alone. If there were more in the area or if there were cubs, the plan would change. As it stood, Azmere and Paedon would retrieve their striders and move down the far side of the hill and wait in the tall grass. Tyrael and his daughter would create a ruckus from their present location to distract the creature. This would be the sign for Azmere to fire an arrow and Paedon to charge. Azmere would cover the young man’s move while Tyrael and Krysta came down from the flank. If a few arrows and spears didn’t work, they would just ride circles around the beast until it was put down. Tyrael locked eyes which each one and did not move on until he received some kind of confirmation that they understood.

Azmere tapped Paedon on the shoulder and moved back away from the lookout towards Skylla. The archer jogged down the hill with bow in hand. He leaned his shoulders back to offset the increasing momentum and pumped his legs up and down by lifting his knees. In the taller grasses, the bounding motion of high stepping held a distinct advantage over a straight sprint. Once he reached the mare, he hung his bow from the yvas handle and sat down. Azmere folded his legs so that he could rest his elbows on his knees. He closed his eyes and focused solely on his breathing. Once inside his own mind, Azmere listened to the sound of wind rushing in and out of his lungs. He called upon his body to quiet itself, specifically his hart that thumped along at a decent rhythm in response to the brief moment of cardio stimulation.

Bu-Bump. Bu-Bump. Bu-Bump. Bu-Bump.

Each blast rippled through his veins with enough force that Azmere could feel it traveling along the sides of his neck. He took another deep breath and felt the adrenaline recoil. The breaths were growing long and the space between the beats of his heart became a place where he could find peace in his normally troubled mind. With a few more deep breaths that caused his chest to expand, the world around Azmere drifted away so that when he opened his eyes he could see the web stretched all around him with intricate patterns of criss-crossing lines. The contours of the world were elegantly wrapped in the glowing hues of blue, green and white. The colors blended and changed with the lay of the land but Azmere was more inclined to believe that it was just various states of wear and tear. The amount of time Watchmen spent mending the web and repairing djed origins was far higher than he ever would have guessed.

Several ticks rolled by as he allowed himself to adjust and then rose to his feet. He moved slowly at first touching the various strands of illumination that were nearby. He walked among his party for a moment and overheard part of the conversation between father and daughter. The Drykas wrapped his fingers around one of the glowing strings and within a thought, he was standing in front of Tyrael and his daughter.

“Papa, I don’t think of those things.” Her voice was barely above a whisper but the wind brought it to his awareness.

“I’m just saying that my daughter has options when it comes to her future.” Tyrael signed skill and smart then beautiful. The pride which hung in his eyes was bright enough to illuminate all of the grasslands. Azmere smiled and moved past them down to the base of the small bowl of earth that sits below where the Drykas had gathered. It was in these tall blades of grass that Azmere had first scene their target. He moved along the djed which made a strange arc to the south. He stopped and looked with awe at the sight before him. In a slow, lumbering walk the grassbear moved right through Azmere’s awareness. The Dyrkas followed along beside the beast. He admired its stripes and also wondered at the size as the animal’s back was almost shoulder high to Azmere. He was caught in a moment of time where he forgot time and forgot himself. In what felt like waking up from a nap, the hunter realized he needed to finish his reconnaissance. He made several quick movements within the web by darting along the splayed lines to get an all-around view of the area. He smiled having found no signs of obstacles or complications to the initial plan. Azmere brought his form back to where his body was resting in the grass and slowly sat down.

His eyes fluttered open and the mystical design of the web with its addictive light was gone. Azmere felt a bit down. It wasn’t that the exertion was high or it expelled a great deal of his focus. No, the hunter was down because leaving the web always left him a bit sad. It was as if going there was a more pleasant way to view the world or at least forget about it for a while. Shaking his head, Azmere slowly rose and stood next to his strider allowing their faces to clunk together. He brought his hands up and scratched at the horse’s jaw and neck while allowing his eyes to close. This pause gave his vision time to recalibrate for the real world. Azmere was still prone to web ‘hang-overs’, as it were, that dulled or jumbled his senses; sight in particular.

After a chime or four, the archer straightened his back and moved to the side of Skylla. He shifted the bow then hoisted himself up onto the back of his steed. The blue and yellow orbs scanned about until they looked on to the young man hazardously entrenched in love’s grasp. The spearman was simply swaying with the grasses as he stared into nothing. Azmere was certain that the young woman among them was the all-consuming thought which caused the boy to neglect his surroundings. Azmere clicked his tongue against the back of his teeth and used the yvas hand to steady himself as he took the bow into his left hand. Paedon didn’t respond. Azmere made the noise again but this time it was louder. The young man looked up to his hunting companion with a confused gaze. In a tick, that was replaced by an ‘ah-ha!’ moment and the boy was off towards his own mount.

Azmere looked up to the sky and watched the clouds move overhead. He felt the breeze against his unmarred cheek but did not hear Zulrav’s voice. Bringing his gaze back to the Sea of Grass, Azmere narrowed it against the rays of Syna’s face. Perhaps he needed to do more to get the god’s attention. Maybe it was a matter of questioned honor or ability. This hunt would provide ample answers to both questions. Paedon led his mare up next to Azmere and his horse. With a glance, Azmere let Paedon know they were to get this underway. The archer led Skylla down to the south in an arc that would place them ahead of the grassbear. He used his legs to control the tempo and most of the steering only correcting with his hand if necessary. The pair of hunters was trying to be subtle and quiet so the slower pace suited better for both accounts. After several chimes, the horsemen were in position.

Azmere drew an arrow and had it notched within ticks, his gaze wandered to Paedon who nodded in understanding. He looked up the hill and waved his arm twice back and forth then moved his mare around to the other side of Skylla and Azmere. The archer was holding tension on the string with his thumb tucked under his index finger. His arm was straight and the contrasting gaze sifted through the blades watching for the inevitable parting caused by such a large mass. Paedon readied his spear in his right hand and held the other two in his left. The boy looked a bit nervous but ready. A nervous habit of allowing his pear to rotate in his grasp began to distract Azmere. Before any more thought to be wasted on such trivial things, Paedon waved the spears in his off-hand towards the hill where Tyrael and Krysta were waiting. They began jumping up and down, shouting and making a terrible clatter.

A tick passed and then another without incident which left Azmere wondering what was going to need to happen to make their plan effective. Azmere did not turn his head but moved his gaze from the area where his awareness had seen the bear towards Paedon. The young man shrugged and looked up towards Krysta who was still shouting and tossing equipment into the air. Azmere moved his eyes to follow the gaze when something in the grass caught his attention. The stripes of black over the orange and white fur stretched upwards as the bear revealed his long tapered neck and big head. The creature stood up on its hind legs and looked towards the noise which promptly ceased. The father/daughter tandem disappeared to find their striders and prepare to charge. Azmere lined up his shot on the animal by pointing his arm straight at it. He exhaled and released his grip allowing the arrow to fly.

Before the bowstring even snapped all the way back to straight, the archer was drawing another broad arrow and pulling it back against the longbow’s string. Notched and drawn, the bear had started to set back down on all fours but not before Azmere released a second arrow. Paedon took off with a ‘yah!’ kicking his heels into the mare which brought the nimble looking creature to a quick sprint under the instruction of her Drykas. Azmere fired a third arrow tat sliced through the air past Paedon and into the grass. An angry roar of irritation and pain bellowed through the plain announcing at least one of Azmere’s arrows was true to its mark.

The wind had picked up again and Azmere goaded Skylla forward into the grasses arcing opposite of the path Paedon had chosen. The two men were each closing half of a circle around the bear’s last location and the two riding down from the hill would soon join in the art of trampling a clearing. Part of what makes grassbears so dangerous (aside from their massive size, sharp claws and super strength) is they can be hard to detect in dense grasses. Wound one and confuse it with fast moving horses that stay out of striking distance. Continued patterns of riding circles will eventually create enough space for hunters to get off better shots that will take the beast to the ground.

The plan was working. Even though the bear was hiding in the tall grasses, his complaining about the fast-moving striders was giving his position away. Azmere pushed his horse to the left with his legs and by grabbing the yvas handle. He and the mare weren’t in perfect sync so the hand was necessary to avoid running into Paedon. Once they had crossed, the archer gripped Vihar, drew then notched an arrow and pointed his arm at the center mass of the beast’s cover. The shot must’ve just grazed because only a growl permeated the grass. The archer could see the cloud of Paedon on the other side and waited a tick before taking in a deep breath. Once his comrade was clear of the line of fire, the watchman opened his hand and let the arrow fly into the grass.

It was at this point when Tyrael and Krysta had joined the fray. They divided and joined the courses already set by the young, star-struck man and his logical counterpart from the Watch. The dust was starting to rise and Paedon had made a call that he could see the creature. Tyrael was riding in cycle with Paedon but was closer to Azmere. He shouted something but the galloping of hooves, the rising cloud of dust and the sudden ear-splitting roar shook the words into oblivion. Azmere saw the worry in the older man’s eyes and quickly turned his head to see Paedon hoist his spear and turn his strider towards the grass. The dust did make it harder to see but what happened next was impossible to miss.

Azmere spurred his mount onward as did Tyrael and Krysta. They had to stick to the plan to avoid a bigger mess. As the young man thrust his spear into the tall shimmering grasses, the huge frame of the grassbear shot out and made a swipe with his huge paw just before th spear ripped into the flesh of its rear leg. The strider beneath the man was instinctive and planted its front legs which caused its body to rock forward but lowered the horse’s head beneath the attack. This would’ve been an amazing display of survival had it not placed Paedon in the line of fire. The young man caught the brunt force and was knocked sideways from the yvas. He flew clean out of the clearing and into some undisturbed brush. The flash of retaliation was brief, violent and its end saw the bear retreat into cover.

Tyrael showed his experience and flung a javelin into the grass. His tactics had lent him the advantage and the bear howled in pain. That was three hits so far but until the monster mad a run for it, he was still dangerous. Krysta was next and as she rounded wide, she drew back the bow in her hand and let an arrow fly into the grass. She slowed her strider only to hear her father yell for her to keep moving. Azmere was coming up quick with an arrow notched but he hadn’t raised it yet and it was a good thing. He dropped his hand down on the handle of his yvas and steered the mare out wide to avoid his slowed companion. What had started as a methodical hunt had drastically altered itself into a mess of injury and confusion.
