Considered one of the most mysterious cities in Mizahar, Alvadas is called The City of Illusions. It is the home of Ionu and the notorious Inverted. This city sits on one of the main crossroads through The Region of Kalea.

The house that she had gotten when moving into the city was nice enough she had told herself but it was a far cry from what she was used to back in Wind Reach. Comfort and a stable living condition was something that she could expect back in her old city but here she was constantly moved during the nights and days as Ionu saw fit, like a massive and constant game of hide and seek. Some days she found that what she needed was just around the corner and other days they were far away and although she had not been in the city for more than a few days she had already found it fascinating, gotten sick of it, found it funny and gotten sick of it again.

Aenisa woke up later than she might have wanted to, having wanted to train Inagio before she had to visit the market to purchase the accessories for her bird. Giving herself a stretch in the bed before she climbed out of it and yawned quietly, stretching some more as she heard the call of her constant companion. Inagio had taken to calling the chest by the end of Aenisa’s small bed her home and now there sat a small nest of random things that was her new nest. Upon hearing Aenisa stirring in the bed Inagio had immediately begun to chirp for her breakfast, bringing the day into bloom as it was surely only the start of the day, it seemed that the Falcon was eating more and more but soon she would be big enough to hunt on her own anyways.

Having fed her bird for the morning Aenisa was soon dressed for the streets and standing by the door to her own house, where would the night have brought them this time and what would be the location of the shop today? A huge sigh could be heard throughout the house as she pushed open the door to her home and stepped out into the expected street, a very narrow alleyway met her instead this morning, almost narrow enough for her to take one step into it and hit the next wall. It was a real pain sometimes to live in the back of a house, sometimes her private entry got its own street but other times it just ended up in an alleyway she had come to realise and so she wasn’t all that surprised by now even if it was a major bother. With a few chosen curse words under her breath she made her way out into the narrow alleyway, at least she hoped it would not be too long until she reached some sort of a street which she could walk normally.

In the last few days it seemed that Aenisa had grown more and more tired of the city, Wind Reach had seemed like such a boring place in comparison to much of the rest of the world but now that she had arrived in Alvadas it seemed that the city was just out to get on her nerves most of the time. Wind Reach was a constant and it was something that she had been used to as well, this was foreign and annoying. Her clothes scraped along the walls of either side of her as she was walking awkwardly towards the end of the alleyway, beams cutting out from the buildings sometimes that forced her to squeeze herself through sideways, each one bemoaned and accompanied by a curse. Soon she would be at the end of the alleyway and hopefully by then she could get back on track again and out onto a street once more but as she reached the end she realised that her luck had only just began.

Squeezing past the last two pillars and Aenisa was back out onto the street again however she had failed to notice the divider between the alleyway and the street and as her shoes got caught on it she stumbled forwards. Like a deer on ice, Aenisa came crashing forwards straight down onto the street at the feet of a rather large man who slowly turned around at the sound of the crash. Aenisa took a moment to gather herself and her thoughts as before she would begin to stand back up again, her own dignity far from still being intact.

Oh, what happened?”

The voice was that of a man in his 40’s or 50’s she thought as she was standing back up, speaking in a rather annoyed tone of voice back at the man for no apparent reason other than to fuel her own self-pity as she was casting an angry glare at the divider that had caused her so much trouble.

I fell, can’t you see that?”

Stupid people and their million questions all the time, can’t he see that I fell? Back on her feet she made a dismissive gesture with her arms as she proceeded to inspect her own outfit for any damage or marks that would make them look even worse than they were, god she hated this place some days.

No need to get angry with me young girl. Here, let me see.”

The man said as he placed a firm and strong hand onto Aenisa’s shoulder, proceeding to inspect her outfit with her. What Aenisa had failed to notice about her surrounding and about the man himself was that she had ended up in what looked like the beggars’ quarters of the day and that the man himself looked rougher than she had at first thought him to be. As the man was pretending to care and be nice to Aenisa he was signalling with his other hand to others in the nearby area to arrive as well, seeing an opportunity.

Where you headed anyways?”

The man continued by asking, fishing for some details as they were both pre-occupied by making sure that nothing had been damaged or would make her look like a beggar, the irony of that being that she was now almost surrounded by them.

The market, do you know where that is at?”

With these words Aenisa looked up for the first time to really see the man that was helping her so kindly and what she saw was nothing short of a shock for her, standing before her at what she estimated to be 8-foot-tall but was in reality about 7-foot-tall, a burly man dressed in rags, an unkempt beard and an unkempt hair style speaking clearly to what he was, a roughian. As Aenisa realised what kind of a situation she was in, there was not much time left to think about what to do and if she wanted to do something before the approaching gang behind the man was on her she would have to act quickly. Trying to hide her fear she allowed herself to smile awkwardly as she looked at the man just as the man spoke to her.

Why of course, it is just down the road this way, come.”

Words spoken like true poison and deceit, like an illusion of truth, an illusion of niceties that had long left this man’s life, perhaps once in his life he had been an honest person but now it was not to be. Aenisa just kept screaming inside her head at Alvadas, it seemed that the city was just testing her patience now, to see how she would handle herself, what she might do about the situation. She did not have time for this stuff today, not at all.

Ah, perfect, I shall come back later, thanks!”

Aenisa said these words quickly before she would duck down from the grip that she was being held in, turn around in a swift motion, loose her footing as she was trying to bolt for the alleyway, only to come into the alleyway sideways and flying.

CRASH

Her body came crashing down onto the stones of the alleyway but this time Aenisa did not spare any time as she heard the voice of the man that she had just escaped sending everyone after her. Throbbing pain in her left arm she was back on her feet and now it was a matter of running, running as fast as she could and that was what she decided on doing as well. It was awkward for all except for the kids in this alleyway so it was like a badly oiled sprint for Aenisa, run from the beams that stopped her path to the next set of beams, squeeze yourself through and then run to the next set, squeeze yourself through and it would continue like that for the rest of the alleyway as far as she could see. Behind her she heard the voices of her pursuers as they were pushing each other on, trying to get closer to her which by the voices increasing all the time, they were. Aenisa wasn’t a good runner and this was evident in her pace and style as she was running, her hands were stuck by her side as if she was a weird robot of sorts as her feet were running quite awkwardly, she had not had to do much running in the past, especially in these confined spaces. It did however seem faster than walking because soon she was zooming past her own door and was now heading towards the other exit but as she reached her own door she slowed down too, she was getting exhausted. That is when she got an idea on what to do next.

Stopping after the next set of beams that she reached she took a few deep breaths to gather herself, it wasn’t more than a second or two before her pursuers were at the beams as well. Full of self-confidence the younger guy on the other side of the beams were smirking at her, clearly, he was thinking of all the things that she might be carrying for him to collect for himself and said.

See? Running never pays, I am better at it than you.”

Behind the younger man stood a row of his companions too, their heads popping out from either side of the man to see what was going on and to stare at Aenisa with their deadly looks, good thing that their eyes couldn’t hurt her she thought. For a moment, she thought about how she would get out of this now, if she ran now with them straight on her heels she would no doubt be caught and beaten mercilessly for her indiscretions. Aenisa stood still on the other side for a few more moments and then she realised that she had to buy more time so she said.

I guess I have learned that now.”

Buying time was all about collecting her own breath now, she was going to have to run again, no doubt about it but first she needed to catch her breath some more. It was then that the guy did something that she had not expected him to do for a few more moments at least, he started to squeeze himself through the two beams. No time to think and reacting by pure reflex Aenisa felt herself take a step towards the young guy, fist cocked by her head and before she had much time to think it came forwards like a log that was shooting out from the top of a waterfall. She could see the expression of the young man that was trying to get to her, his realisation coming too late as he was turning to look at her. Bones crunching together was the only sound that could be heard as the fist of Aenisa connected with the face of the young man, this was followed by the loud cursing, a dancing around by Aenisa as she wasn’t used to hitting people with her fist and the pain was agonising.

GET HER!”

The fury in the voice that came from the young man as he was bleeding profusely from his nose, it was probably broken but he didn’t care as he lunged himself forwards towards her, looking like a wolf having just fed on a prey and hungry for more. He fell short of Aenisa and came crashing onto the ground as well, just like she had done at the beginning of this stupid chase, Aenisa allowed herself to laugh inwardly for a moment before she turned around and bolted again towards the exit of the alleyway. Commotion followed her as she was running again, it was a real pain to have to run, her body was all sweaty and her clothes were going to have to be dried out later if she didn’t want them to smell too badly. Thankfully Aenisa did get a bigger advantage over her pursuers this time as it took the man some more time to get up from the fall and the alleyway prevented any of the rest from just running over him, if it was out of pity or out of respect she guessed she would never know. Buzzling street at the end of the alleyway could not have met her soon enough and as it did she was greeted, not by a randomised slum but rather by what she could only describe as an avenue of sorts, it seemed like the city was offering a straight through road today and it was packed with people. Aenisa had just come running out of an alleyway which no doubt seemed strange to the people as a few on the street paused their conversations to look at Aenisa as she was panting heavily, looking back down the alleyway. Her pursuers would only be a few more seconds. Darting across the road she ducked into another alleyway, pausing at the edge as she stood there and watched the one that she had emerged from.

Bloodied he emerged from the alleyway, followed by his entourage of about six by Aenisa’s count and as they looked around the area they huffed and puffed and tried to intimidate a few people before they headed back down the alleyway again to disappear. She had made it, by the grace of Ionu or by the grace of her own fate, whatever be the reason for it, she had made it away from them, that was good. She dusted herself off and having carefully examined her right fist that she had just thrown into the face of the pursuer she felt that not everything was right about it, the pain that it caused was excruciating, she was going to have to find someone to properly check that out. It seemed that today the favour of the gods would at least not discriminate against her, hopefully it would be smooth sailing after this little funny joke of Ionu’s.

No doubt though Ionu wasn’t done for the day with the small little jokes that were played out over the course of the day, the other day she had ended up in a bakery right next to some gathering of homeless people, it was a cruel and what she guessed, not such an unusual joke on the part of Ionu. Her hand really hurt as she emerged back out onto the streets again, it was a throbbing pain now that made it feel like her heart had gone to her hand and so had all the heat in her entire body by the feel of things. Why did she have to throw that punch for? It wasn’t worth it, she could probably have paid them off and kept her hand but no, her instincts just told her to punch and so she did. What was she? A hypnotised person? A puppet? No, she just did what her brain had told her.

Joining the crowd on the streets Aenisa found herself drifting up the street towards where everyone else was heading, where that was, she had no idea. Hoping that the crowd were all heading to the market or some type of a shop where she could purchase some falconry supplies she just followed the stream of people. It was quite the nice day out if one forgot about the moving of streets and houses constantly, at least the sun would be out and warming the people in the streets. As Aenisa was walking up the street she chose to listen in to some people that she was walking behind when she heard the word “The Inverted” being uttered by one of them. It did seem as if the entire city was just on edge about these “The Inverted” people and so she was intrigued and wanted to know a lot more than what she knew at this point. The Inverted seemed to be some sort of big circus group of performers that would dazzle the audiences with their spectacular acrobatics. It sounded so surreal but at the same time it did seem as if it would be something that might interest Aenisa as she wanted to see them.

I have seen them.”

A young female declared to the small group in front of Aenisa, she could see from behind the wide and proud smile on the lips of the young female as she declared this. Aenisa just smirked as she watched the rest of the group seem impressed by their friend.

No way, really? Where? What did they do?” They inquired from their friend in an excited tone of voice.

Amazing acrobatics, like nothing you have ever seen before, it was like something from another world.”

The words that flowed from the lips of the young female did not carry much information, Aenisa grew a little suspicious about them immediately but as she wasn’t part of the conversation she was quiet and listened to what the friends might say.

Really? I had heard that they are from this world.”

What an amazingly stupid observation that her friend made, it was like he couldn’t see past his own nose, Aenisa slowly shook her head in silence behind the group. The people of the group couldn’t have been more than maybe fifteen or so years of age, they were still very young and very human.

Yep, they say that they change the location around but nobody knows where it is.”

The female carried on to the nodding of the heads of her friends in the small group, they all carried on talking about the Inverted in the abstract form and what it meant for the festival. A festival of illusions. One of the young ones in the group remarked that it was probably all an illusion anyways, the festival, the Inverted and everything. Aenisa cracked a slight smirk at this, it wouldn’t surprise her at all if this turned out to be true.

Aenisa slowed her pace, stepping to the side of the moving crowds and onto a slightly raised set of stairs leading into a house. Being short wasn’t always a good thing and so whenever Aenisa needed to see above the crowd this is what she did. Find something higher to stand on and then you can see. Taking the few steps up the staircase she soon saw above the bobbing heads of the crowds apart from the occasional tall one that came through. It seemed that the streets were lined with shops but they all boasted of other things, potions, massages, food, drink and alike but nothing akin to an animal shop or a general goods shop, nothing as far as she could see. She was going to have to admit defeat and this hand of hers didn’t make the search any easier with its constant throbbing and heat that it generated, she allowed her fingertips to slide across the by now slightly swollen hand, even a soft touch made her squirm a bit. Allowing the hand to fall to her side with a deep sigh she stepped off the steps and back onto the street again, joining the stream of people heading up the street once more.

Having walked with the stream for what seemed like several blocks Aenisa soon stepped aside and stopped near the edge of an alleyway. She must have gone past the shops already, surely, she had. Ionu was playing his tricks again and this whole crowd of people that she was walking with was no doubt only walking in circles. Cruel and funny all at the same time, that was Ionu for you, this much she had come to understand in her brief stay. As she kept her hand by her side and allowed herself to peer along the street she was trying to figure out where she might go next to get where she needed to go.

That was when she saw them passing by at the other end of a side-street. It was “The Inverted”, she was sure of it, they came through doing cartwheels and everything. Maybe Aenisa could catch them if she hurried to the other end of the side-street, starting to push her way through the stream of people that seemed to part for her like the water parts for a rock. Preparing for a bumpy ride across the road Aenisa was half-expecting to face a steady stream of bumping and dodging to reach the side-street. Half-way over the avenue she realised that she was no longer surrounded by a lot of people, looking up she realised that most were indeed gone. Seemingly most people had been moving along the street like a herd of caribou or cows, a herd of people.

Staring down the side-street that she had spotted The Inverted through it too was now abandoned much like it had been but nobody on the other side of the alleyway seemed to want to make themselves visible either. Alvadas seemed to have gone through a shift in its locations without Aenisa having noticed anything and it seemed that it had taken most of the people with it and thrown them elsewhere in the city, like a big labyrinth that never ended. Aenisa shrugged and told herself that at least her house would have moved away from the roughians that she had encountered earlier now, or at least she was hoping this was the case. It was clear to her that the ever-changing appearance of the city was a constant reminder that Ionu was in effect around these parts of the world. Aenisa did not know when or if she would ever get to meet anyone that worshipped Ionu because of the simple fact that most of what the god did seemed to just be made up to drive people insane. Deciding to not ponder it further Aenisa headed down the side-street and for the other side where moments ago, the Inverted had passed by according to her.

As Aenisa reached the other side of the street, The Inverted had of course disappeared like much else seemed to do but this time she had the fortunes of Ionu watching over her. Appearing outside of the Bizarre, the gentle flow of people to and from the building seemed to indicate that this was exactly where Aenisa had wanted to go. Unassuming from the outside the building looked like an empty warehouse of sorts, albeit a massive one at that with a lot of people streaming to it. Having heard tales of the endless shops and stalls inside of the Bizarre it was the right place for her to seek the accessories for her raptor, the throbbing hand was going to have to wait for a bit.

A wealthier looking man came striding past Aenisa as she was stood still, admiring the Bizarre from the outside. This was her que to head inside and took follow on the man, knowing nothing about the Bizarre she decided there and then to just follow the man and see what he might visit and where he might go. Taking the tail on the man she was weary of being seen by the man and thought to be a thief out for his valuables and so her gaze was firmly fixed on the back of the man’s head. If the man would have turned around, Aenisa could react quickly and pretend to be doing something else. Dodging outgoing customers from the Bizarre both Aenisa and her target was soon inside of the Bizarre and underneath the roof of the building.

Soon realising that the inside of the building seemed to be nothing to what could be seen from the outside. Alleyways shooting off in every direction, stalls and shops lining the walkways, cafes serving customers all blended together with the voices of those within. Laughing and loud talking coming from the cafés meant that as a customer in the Bizarre you had to get used to the high volume Aenisa thought. Slowing her pace as the man in front of her did she could sense that the man was suspicious of something, was it a sixth sense type of thing? In one swift move the man turned around and before Aenisa could even react he was staring at her, it was eerie how quickly the man had spotted her. Flashing a smile, Aenisa tried to play it off by turning to the stalls in front of her only to stumble into a wall that hit her square in the face. Laughing around her, this sure wasn’t her day, using her good hand to gently rub down her face, making sure it was alright. Nothing was broken and Aenisa quickly hurried off from the location and further down the road, abandoning the plan to follow the man. Rounding one of the many corners she came to a stop to think as she looked down the path ahead of her.

What was it that she had come to get? Some new clothes? Weapons? Food? No, yeah, a cage and other essential stuff for her raptor at home. She had to see what was on offer where she was at but being on the shorter end of the scale proved a massive disadvantage within the Bizarre as Aenisa found herself having to dodge all kinds of approaching citizens in her slow-moving pace along the stalls. It was almost a claustrophobic experience being in such a crowded place on this day but at the same time it was probably only because she was so close to the entrance, something that had to play its part in all of this.

Stopping at a nearby stand as she reached it, something having caught her attention. It was a fruit stand with fruit that she had never seen before, never even heard of before. A well-placed glance and a raising of her finger called for the shop keepers attention. Finishing the transaction of a customer he was soon across the stall from Aenisa.

How can I help you?”

Very formal sounding, his words were structured in a way that made it all sound so pleasant as the silky-smooth voice delivered the question to her ears. Aenisa was going be her usual self and push straight on with her question but the last few days in Alvadas had taught her to adapt to situations. Conversations, incidents and moving streets all made the entire city adapt to ever changing conditions, it was a mix of pain and fun. Aenisa had stood there for a moment, inspecting the Peaches and the Raisins on the stall as the shop keeper patiently waited for her answer, no doubt her silence annoying him slightly. A busy day at the Bizarre meant that everything had to flow smoothly and then came Aenisa, slow and taking her time. What a bother.

What are those?”

Almost touching the fruit with her fingers as she asked the question, her voice rather monotone but her eyes curiously inspecting the fruit in the stall in front of her. Yellow and redish in the skin of the fruit, giving off a rather sweet aroma. The smell, although not too strong helped to keep the stall and the section of the Bizarre smelling nice. The shop keeper eyed the fruit that she was pointing to, let out a sigh and said in as friendly a tone as he could muster.

Peaches from across the sea.”

This explanation was met with an appreciative noise coming from the young girl standing at his stall. Aenisa then frowned a little as she read the price of the produce and so she moved on to the raisins as she asked the man, this time in a bit more of a happy tone.

Are these good?”

Finger following her eyes as they were now pointing at the raisins that lay in a small wooden box on the stall that was set up for the fruit shop. Nodding his head in approval of her question he was quick to say that they were indeed good, spring was a good time for the raisins as they too were from across the sea. Aenisa seemed to ponder this for a moment before ordering one pound of them to take with her to which the shop keeper seemed to brighten up a little. Bagging the goods that she had chosen in a paper bag she was handed it and in turn handed over one of her gold Mizas to the merchant. Thanking the merchant for the goods she continued down the line of stalls as she held the bag in her hand whilst she was walking.

It shouldn’t take long for someone to find what they need in the Bizarre, seeing as how the entire place is full of shop stalls and merchants trying to get you to purchase their goods. Aenisa had arrived at a small fork in the road and had to decide where she wanted to go, stepping to the side for a moment she decided to see where most of the people were going. There was not as many people in this part of the Bizarre as there had been when she had first entered the bazaar and so it was a bit easier to keep track of things. Pushing herself up against the sidewall of a shop, Aenisa placed her paper bag onto a beam that stuck out as she dug out a few raisins from it. Inspecting the raisin before tossing it into her gaping mouth she allowed her focus to rest on the light stream of people passing her by. Aenisa wanted to travel down the road most travelled, her logic telling her that she might find what she needed down that route. Failing to realise that maybe Falconry and its accessories wasn’t the most popular of items in Alvadas. Although there was a steady stream of people arriving where Aenisa stood and watched, none of them seemed to be particularly drawn to any of the different paths as far as she could tell. Admitting defeat after a while she chose one of the paths at random.

It was apparently the better of the paths and soon Aenisa stood before a shop selling pet accessories, the small shop was overcrowded with items for all kinds of smaller pets and animals that one could imagine. An older man stood behind the counter and smiled kindly, keeping silent.

7th of Spring - 517 AV

The shop was not like the traditional shops that one finds inside of a city but rather what you would expect inside of a bazaar like the bizarre. Aenisa stood by the table that had been set up as a counter to put a barrier between those in the streets, the shop owner and his goods. Lining the walls inside of the small shop was all kinds of animal accessories. Cages for the birds, leashes for all kinds of dogs and other animals, specialised food, bowls and much, much more. Aenisa suspected that the buyer might have some select items in the back as well for those customers that the owner liked or for those that showed enough wealth to be worth the trouble for. Those items on display seemed to be of a decent enough quality and they were split into two sections. From what Aenisa could see there seemed to be some second-hand items as well for sale, probably from dissatisfied customers or they had been bought in to the shop.

Light was somehow penetrating even this deep into the Bizarre and as Aenisa stood by the stall the older man whom she assumed was the owner of the shop was perfectly illuminated by the light. Face like that of someone in their 60’s, wrinkles starting to show and he, having clearly lived a life of heavy work for most of it as well. Underneath the man’s eyes deep sacks were visible from the lack of sleep that he no doubt had to endure for year in and year out. The man did not seem to have grown angry with life as some did once they got to his age but rather he seemed quite content with what he had in his little shop. Aenisa allowed herself to inspect the old man for a few moments more, noticing the slender frame of the man under the garments he wore before she allowed her gaze to meet with his as she started by asking.

You got any good bird cages?”

No hello, no niceties like what no doubt was the custom of most people in the city, not Aenisa, for her it was a straight road like it had been in Wind Reach. A slight twitch of the wrinkle over his nose and his eyebrows allowed Aenisa to know that she had been rude with her conversation starter. That would have been true if Aenisa had been paying close attention to the man but now her focus was firmly fixed on the items behind the man, the cages, the hoods and bells for her raptor.
With a groan coming from the chair on which the man was seated he slowly stood up with just as big a groan coming from him as well. Aenisa seemed to ignore the old man for the most part of it all, she was inspecting the goods from a distance. As the man was waddling over towards the cages on the wall he was speaking to Aenisa as well, a tone of voice that emanated calmness and experience.

Yes, we got plenty of cages, what kind of a bird you got in mind?”

Without turning to face Aenisa the old man was continuing his path towards the cages nearby as he was expecting her to answer him without the push from him for information.

It’s a falcon.”

The man nodded and let out a drawn-out approving noise as he had now reached the section in his small shop which housed the birdcages. For a moment, it seemed as if the old man had forgotten why he was there in the first place but then he took out what could only be described as a broken off branch from a tree. With his tree branch, he hooked one of the sturdier off-shoots into one of the birdcages closer to the ceiling, unable to reach it himself. Taking the cage down he placed it on the table underneath the row of cages and returned his help stick to the nearby wall again. Waddling back, he was soon where Aenisa stood once more, placing the cage on the table in front of her. A grin spread across the old man’s features, he was still able to do his job and it was clearly making him proud.

This cage will be the best for your bird.”

Old hands came down along the side of the cage, following the outlining of the cage until they reached the little opening of the cage. Demonstrating to Aenisa how this worked as if she was a total beginner, she did not have the heart to tell the man otherwise after his proud moment. Instead Aenisa thought of what else she was going to need for the bird besides the cage. Casually nodding her head as the words of the man floated around her like an invisible mist that Aenisa didn’t want any part of at all.

“… So you only need to help the bird get inside a few times. Eventually it wi…”

His words came to her ears again as she focused onto the man once more, smiling at him and then rudely interrupting him in the usual fashion she did when the conversation had gotten too far away from her. Waving it off was something she would have done if the cage was all that she had needed from the man. She didn’t feel like waiting for a hundred or so years it would no doubt take the man to speak of his entire life story and opted to just cut him off.

I also need a hood, a couple of jesses, a perch, a glove that can withstand the falcon’s claws and a mews for the bird and a whistle for the birdActually.”

Aenisa cut herself off now as she thought about the mews for a moment, did she really need a mews for her bird in that cramped up house that she was living in? There was no space for it. Surely it would be a waste to buy a mews now and besides, with what she bought she was going to have to load the cage full with the items as to not use her injured hand. No mews for today she decided on and shook her head.

Scratch the mews, don’t need it right now.”

Her house was like a mews on its own, small enough for the two of them. Turning around to waddle back into the store, Aenisa could hear the old man swearing and cursing under his breath as he was forced to do more work. So, as the man was fetching the accessories for her raptor, Aenisa stood and inspected the cage, she was curious as to why someone had returned a cage to the store again. Aenisa had to ask once the old man got back to the counter. A voice came from inside the store, the man was near the back of the small store as he asked her something.

You sure you don’t need anything else?”

I think I am fine.”

Came the response to the question and then Aenisa watched the agonisingly long time that it took the old man to come back to her, he was surely punishing her for her annoyance of purchasing at his shop.

Soon enough the old man was back with Aenisa, placing each item down onto the table in front of her so that she could see them.

It looks like someone might have returned some of the stuff that they bought from you, how come?”

A frown wandered onto the features of the old man as he shot a glance back into his store and then back at Aenisa as he asked accusingly.

Which one?”

Those ones.”

Aenisa extended her hand to point at the cages that were stored near and under the tables inside of the stall. She wondered why it was that someone would turn have such clearly used items laying around.

Oh, those are nothing.”

The old man tried to tell Aenisa, waving her question off with a wiff waff of his hand and then he pretended to focus on the mathematics of adding up the items for her. Aenisa inspected the man for a moment, was he just playing coy or was he truly hiding something about this all? She didn’t know what to think but seeing as how this was all stuff that was going to Inagio she wanted to make sure that there wasn’t anything bad with the quality of the stuff.

You sure? It looks like some of those are in good condition but just a bit dirty. There must be a reason that you got them there.”

Her pushing attitude was quickly unravelling the old man who had been insulted by this Inarta as soon as she arrived at his stall, she had neglected to listen to his advice and interrupted him on top of that. On top of the top of everything the woman before him was now questioning the quality of his wares, his elderly patience was quickly running out with Aenisa. However, the old man decided to give it one last shot, hoping that a small joke might get this Inarta woman to buy his goods and just move along.

Well, I had them out on the counter here one day and an inexperienced man came to me asking about a cage for his bird. He told me that he was usually travelling with his untrained bird just on a leash and had the leash tied to his belt. I told him that travelling with his bird to and from the forest or the fields with a cage instead of a leash would be better. Keeping the bird calm is essential and it would also lessen the stress for him, so I said that it would cut the work he had to do in half.

He bought two of those cages.”

Aenisa stood there for a moment, not really understanding the point of what the old man had just said, how was this related to the quality? Like a bird let out of its cage for the first time, Aenisa looked properly confused before the man explained the joke to her.

Well, he thought it would take no work at all if he bought two cages, that is why I now got two cages but he has no bird.”

Now she got it, it was a joke! Aenisa let out a soft laugh at this and allowed the joke to smooth things over as it pushed the thought of bad merchandise out of her head. All of this was to the untold appreciation of the merchant behind the table who was now loading the items into the cage for Aenisa. After he was done it was time to get down to the business of the price for these items.

How much is all of this?”

Aenisa asked as she lifted her pouch and opened it slightly, placing the pouch on the table before looking to the old man. He was trying to calculate all the items in his head but quickly gave up and took a quill and a piece of paper to write the items and the prices down. Doing all of this whilst muttering along to what he was doing.

Hmm, yeswell2 gold MizasAnd threenoOkay. Hood is three gold Mizas. The Jesses are two, perch is ten gold Mizas, gloves are six silver. That makes, three and two and ten is fifteen and six silver too. And the cage and the whistle!”

The man exclaimed as he had gotten that far, this was going to be expensive for Aenisa, she could already tell as she stood there, watching the man add all of this up in the most inefficient way she had ever seen. As he realised that he had forgotten to add in the cage and the whistle in his total for the items, he started over, going over each item until they were all added up and then he said.

Okay, it comes out to thirty gold and six silver.”

Stone-faced, the old man stared at Aenisa, daring her almost to protest the absurdly high amount that he was demanding from her. A dead stare from the old man was meeting the disbelief of a stare that Aenisa was shooting back at him and it seemed that the world around them stopped. Aenisa only had ninety gold or so left for the entire month to live on, she needed new clothes, a bow and some other items as well. All of her gold needed to last her until she had found a real income as well. She was going to spend almost thirty-one gold in this one transaction. It had felt like someone had come running up with a club and hit her in her stomach, laughed at her and then ran off again. The old man and Ionu was getting their revenge on her now and it was such a sweet one at that for them both. Slightly hoarse in her voice, Aenisa asked him to repeat himself.

Thirty gold and six silver.”

Smugness all around him, seeping out of every pore in his body. Aenisa hated the man all of a sudden but as she looked inside of her pouch she got an idea of what she might do, she could try and get the man to lower his price.

That is a bit high, don’t you think? How about twenty-three gold?”

Snorting loudly before he broke out into a laugh straight in Aenisa’s face, the old man seemed amused by her attempt at haggling with him. His laugh attracted the attention of a few of the passer-by’s and as he noticed that, he quickly settled down and shook his head firmly.

Thirty gold, six silver.” He simply said again.

Come on old man, I bet you haven’t even made a single sale today. Twenty-six gold then?”

Thirty gold, six silver.” He repeated himself once more.

Aenisa just made a dismissive gesture with her hand as she stared at the old man, now she was angry with him for his refusal to budge. She was in need of this equipment and she wasn’t about to walk across the rest of town to find it someplace else and this old man knew that very well. Aenisa dug her hand into her pouch to retrieve her gold coins, fishing out thirty coins that she slowly counted for the merchant to see clearly. Getting an excellent idea of what to do she neglected to pick out the last gold coin and handed the thirty over to the old man and said.

I only got these thirty, I am sure you can at least let me have the six silver?”

Although the pouch in which Aenisa kept her coins were still clinking with the sound of coin as she lifted it to conceal it, she was hoping that her act might sell it for the man. The man took the thirty gold coins, muttered something inaudible to Aenisa and shooed her on her way to the delight of the woman who just saved six silver Mizas. It had been a mark-up on a few of those items anyhow and although he had given away six silver he had made several gold mizas from what he had bought the items for.

Aenisa was quick to put her coins away and grab the cage with all of the items inside of it to make her escape from the stall, feeling like a true victor in the transaction that she had just made.

7th of Spring - 517 AV

By the time that Aenisa got back out of the Bizarre, it had already turned into evening and the sun was setting over the houses in the near distance. Time seemed to have been moving a lot slower as she had been inside of the shopping extravaganza for several hours. The items that she had gotten off the old man in the stall weighed heavy in her hand and the free hand weighed heavy on her mind. She was going to have to do something about that hand, but right now, Aenisa only wanted to head back home again. She was growing tired.

The buzzling traffic of the day had started to fade away with the slowly disappearing rays of the sun, like people decided that without the light and warmth of the sun it wasn’t worth sticking around. As Aenisa started her journey towards where the key was leading her, she found herself pondering about the Inverted again and the festivities that was currently ongoing in the city. Why was it that they had caused such a stir in the city and for what purpose were they truly there? It was weird how an acrobatics group could cause such a rush of emotions in a city of illusions and deceit.

The stones underneath her feet moulded nicely to the soles of her feet as she was slowly moving along the streets. Ever since she had gotten to the city, she had been met with annoyance and outlandish tests from Ionu it had seemed. Aenisa was starting to settle in however and the small tests that were coming wasn’t becoming too annoying to her any longer even if they were a bother. By her own guess, she would be free of the illusions and misdirections in maybe thirty days or a little longer. They might never go away but at least they would lessen in annoyance as the city, Ionu and Aenisa got to know each other more and more.

Her mind being occupied with other things, Aenisa was moving down the street and was soon at a crossroads. Pausing for a moment she was almost ran into by a courier who came speeding past her, heading up the street with a large package strapped to his back. At least the city wasn’t completely dead. Like it had seemed to her for a few days now, the city seemed to live and die with the sun and so it seemed did the illusions of the god, at least in Aenisa’s case. It wasn’t much of a challenge for her to find her home in the city in the evenings and the key was tugging her down an alleyway from the crossroads. Heading down the alleyway Aenisa would soon be home, the items in her hand would allow her to finally take Inagio out of the city and start the training for real with her. It had been a long wish of hers to finally be able to get her own training for the bird going, she had done what she could inside but for it to be truly effective she needed to go out.

In the alleyways through which Aenisa found herself searching for her home, the light of the sun had long disappeared and only the light from the homes that she was passing by were illuminating the streets. Three alleyways along and Aenisa found her own door, pushing the door open she almost fell through the door into her home as she forgot about the threshold. Casting an angry glare at the threshold she then shut the door and put down her items next to the door before she ventured further into the home to feed Inagio.

• Aenisa's right hand is sprained and swollen. Untreated, it will take four weeks to heal. With medical assistance, it will only take two weeks.
• A small bump has formed on Aenisa's forehead from when she ran into a wall. It'll be gone in two days, and is more of an aesthetical problem than anything else.

N O T E S

This was a very fun first thread to grade for you! It's nice to see Aenisa go through the usual troubles new Alvads deal with when they come to the city of illusion. That's Ionu for you...

If I'm allowed two suggestions - pay close attention to comma usage. Some of your sentences are extremely long and would be easier to grasp if they were broken up a little more. (Example: "It was a real pain sometimes to live in the back of a house, sometimes her private entry got its own street but other times it just ended up in an alleyway she had come to realise and so she wasn’t all that surprised by now even if it was a major bother." Make that "It was a real pain sometimes to live in the back of a house; sometimes her private entry got its own street but other times it just ended up in an alleyway, she had come to realise, and so she wasn’t all that surprised by now, even if it was a major bother." for easy readablility.)

The second thing I noticed while reading is that you jump between participles and finite forms occasionally, which doesn't always add up. (Example: "Giving herself a stretch in the bed before she climbed out of it and yawned quietly, stretching some more as she heard the call of her constant companion." This could be "Giving herself a stretch in the bed before she climbed out, she yawned quietly, stretching some more..." or "She gave herself a stretch in the bed before she climbed out...")

I hope I'm not stepping on your toes too much! Please let me know if you'd prefer for me to keep my criticism to myself.
