Darkness.

Blood.

Frigid air.

One wrong foot was all that it had taken. Her chest was rushing up and down like the hooves of a charging bull as her feet was carrying quickly along the streets. In pursuit, the guy. She had hoped to never see him again or much less literally stumble straight into him in the streets of Alvadas. Ionu’s prank this was, the biggest one. Ionu had to be looking on from somewhere, laughing like the madness that the god brought with it. She had been running for two entire streets now, her legs were screaming for her to stop running, the adrenaline pumping through her veins were telling her to go harder. It wasn’t good, she was sure to make a mistake. Her foot had caught the stone in the road wrong, it slid to the side just as she was in the middle of her stride. Upsetting her balance the way a single drop of water can do in a jug filled to the brim, it was the misstep that her pursuer had been waiting for. At first it did not seem like much, she took a step to correct the balance that had been taken from her but then she took another step and another, and another, her upper body slowly falling forwards. She was going to fall, nothing could stop it now. In a last attempt to correct her own failings, her hands flailing like that of small kids on the ice for the first time just before they fall. Nothing was going to help as she finally felt how her own body gave up to the forces of gravity, face first she was falling forwards.

There was not much time to think about what she might do, by reflexes, like that of a cat falling from a height, her hands were trying to catch her fall. As the fall was all but inevitable there were a few questions that came through her mind. Where was her pursuer? And would he manage to catch up before she would be able to sprint away? Her legs were numb at this point but her body was still pumping out adrenaline in copious amounts. The bow that she was carrying, had been hanging behind her back and so was the arrows, strung to the bow. As she came crashing into the stones of the street, the impact sent arrows spilling out onto the street as the world around Aenisa went dark. Panic settled in, she was on the ground, she wasn’t moving, her newly purchased bow and her arrows lay strewn around her like the legs of a spider. Aenisa shot forwards as she tried to start to collect her things again, she had to bring it with her, the arrows had gone everywhere on the lonely street. Aenisa had in her panicked little mind, forgotten about the pursuing man that had caused all of this and soon she was to regret that.

Like a hammer coming down onto the blade of a sword with force, so came the shoe of her pursuer down onto her back. The air was quickly sent flying back out of her and she found herself gasping for air, only to notice that her fall had opened several cuts along her arms and face. Blood was starting to trickle from her wounds, coating her in a deep red syrup. The man came down on top of her, fists dealing unmitigated and untold damage to her body through crushing blows along her upper body and stomach. Aenisa only felt the world slowly lose its colours before it went completely dark. Only thing that was still felt was Darkness, Blood and the Frigid air.

Earlier on the 14th of Spring.

It was still morning and the sun had not quite yet blessed the entire city with its glory, Aenisa decided that she would go for a walk after having first fed Ignacio. Young as she was, she still needed to be fed daily by Aenisa and it would be several more weeks before she would be able to fly by herself. Red meat was already being administered as a reward though, as Ignacio had started to explore her surrounding in the house that served as the mews as well. It was cheaper for the moment. Aenisa would probably need to buy a mews eventually for Ignacio but as the feathered bird wasn’t much of a flight risk now, it would do fine with the home. Perhaps she could put the mews at Yuri’s farm as well and take care of Ignacio as part of her daily routine at her job. Taking a few pieces of meat in her hand she stepped back into the other room where she had last seen the bird. It wasn’t much, she was going to have to buy better meat next time she went to the market, this wouldn’t last much more than a few more days. Ignacio was sitting at the foot of the bed and observing her nest’s surroundings as Aenisa walked back into the room, carrying the bird’s breakfast.

The already familiar sound, calling Ignacio to food was recognized by the young bird who jumped and walked over towards her owner. Aenisa put the food on the floor for the bird as she watched Ignacio down the pieces that she had been given. It was like they had been pieces of chocolate or other candy to the bird, one pieces, two and then four went and soon they were all gone. The bird was going to have to make it on its own today, Aenisa needed to be elsewhere for the day, she had business to attend to. Cutting up a few more pieces and scattering them around the house here and there, it would have to do, she would be back later anyways, at least this way the bird would explore the house and see it as a bit of a rewarding behaviour.

Locking the door, Aenisa soon emerged out onto the streets again and it seemed that Ionu had chosen to transport their home closer to the docks during the night. Salty air was flowing up the street with the carts and groups of people that came from the docks, sweeping the lower parts of the city like a gentle summer breeze. Still early in the morning, the sun having just broken through the clouds that the morning had offered. The sun was now starting to heat the streets up. Dew still sat on the rocks as Aenisa stepped into the streets and started to walk in the opposite direction of most the others.

She had been ordered by Yuri, the raptor keeper, outside of Alvadas to check out the docks and see if any jobs could be drummed up down there. It wasn’t as if the docks were void of jobs for a falconer but Yuri wasn’t sure if the rush of birds that were there during the summers had arrived yet. Aenisa guessed that Yuri was too busy at the farm to check for himself and so she had agreed to take on the job for him, one of these days she was sure to find herself closer to the docks thanks to the constant moving of the houses. Dodging moving carts and people moving up the street with baskets full of fish, bread, fruits and other assorted goods, Aenisa was making timely progress, heading in the other direction. As the smell of the salty sea-water grew ever stronger, the traffic too was growing thicker and soon it was almost impossible to move against the stream of people. Aenisa should have chosen a better time to come down to the docks, this was the rush hours for all merchants and their carriers, heading into the city.

14th of Spring - 517 AV

The Gaping Maw had shown itself right next to the sanity center and Aenisa soon found herself outside of the city, still dodging the carriers and merchants with their carts and baskets. It wasn’t the usual flow that one would see but rather, it seemed as if the festivities inside of the city was ramping up. The further along in spring and the further along the festival you got, the more people bought and ate and feasted. To not get run down by all the people streaming up from the docks this early morning, Aenisa decided that she would step out into the grass by the side of the road and walk along it. Most of the people that were moving along the road were younger and seemingly not yet fully grown, some children were part of the daily rush but for the most part it was men that looked like they might have been young-adults.

It didn’t take too long to meander through the streets outside of the city and down to the port, colourful houses lining the streets and alleyways shooting off in different directions made it even more pleasant of a walk. It seemed as if there was a sort of understanding between the haulers not to talk too much, the silence of the trip towards Alvadas was only broken by the sound of the squeaking of the wheels under the carts and the constant thumping of sandals and shoes hitting the road. Once in a while there was a pair of haulers, walking together that happened to be engaged in conversation but most people were focused on their task. It seemed as if the festival had pushed most of them to work more than they used to and so they appeared to be very tired, no doubt dreaming of when the festivities were over and they could relax again.

Rounding the corner of the last row of houses before she would reach the docks, the paint on the corner of the home having been well worn for many years of people scraping against it. The narrow and meandering streets opened up to the docks with a buzzling community of sailors, merchants and traders all lining the streets and engaging in heavy discussions. It was hard to hear what they were discussing but most of them were very animated in their gestures, Aenisa assumed it was the eternal struggle of haggling from both sides. The captains and merchants came to the docks with the view of one price only to realise that the price had changed, driving the profits down. It seemed as if fights between the two parties in a discussion could break out at any point and it probably had done so in the past, many times. As crates full of wine, barrels of fish and lots more was coming off the big vessels in the harbour, muscly men carried them down narrow walkways and to nearby shops, waiting carts and haulers. These men and carts would then soon join the stream towards the city for another round of goods, it seemed to Aenisa to have no end in sight. Leaning against the nearby wall, just outside of a trading company’s storefront, the type of a storefront that seemed to attract all the captains of the boats in the harbour to it. It seemed to be maybe a tax office for the arriving ships, or maybe it was a pricing company? Aenisa didn’t know and frankly didn’t care either. Her focus was on the moving people in the harbour and perhaps more importantly, the skies above.

As with any harbour that prides itself on having trade going on in it, the seagulls and pigeons and other normal birds were a common occurrence and annoyance. It was early spring and although most of the birds were yet to come out, the pigeons were there all year around and the seagulls, they came and went. Her eyes were scanning the skies above as she could see there was quite a few seagulls circling the docks, waiting for the opportunity to strike when the sailors least expected it. Every once in a while, Aenisa could see how a few of the seagulls dove towards a ship or a stall, stole something and hurried on their way. A wry smirk crept over her lips, this would mean plenty of business from the harbour master. She could train her Ignacio here as well as the other raptors that Yuri had, earn coin on the side as well, this would be perfect for her.

They are funny, those birds.” A deep and manly voice sounded out from just beside Aenisa, once again she had gotten caught having her focus elsewhere, getting lost in her own thoughts. “Did I scare you?” Turning around, Aenisa let her eyes center on the man, lean and tall, well dressed and well-manicured in all possible ways. This man screamed success upon first look and Aenisa allowed herself to ease up a bit, at least he wouldn’t want to start any trouble with her. She shrugged her shoulders before gesturing out towards the harbour at a cluster of five ships.

They are losing fish to birds, see how they go round, round, waiting, a barrel is open, a seller doesn’t have his eyes on fish?” Aenisa shifted her arm to point towards where she had seen a seagull steal a fish not too long ago. Politely the man was following her hand as he nodded along and then asked her.

You seem to know an awful lot, how come?”

I see, I watch, I work for Yuri.” Aenisa figured that such a well-dressed man might know who Yuri was, after all he took care of a lot of raptors for the upper-classes and this man seemed to fit that demographic. The man nodded slowly and it seemed as if he had understood who she worked for and what type of work she did.

Good man, Yuri. So, why you down here? It is quite the busy day, everyone is preparing for the end of the festival, shouldn’t you be enjoying it too?” Aenisa shook her head in response to the man, it seemed to her like they were in their own little bubble. All around the two of them, shouting and hollering was going on but still, she could hear him perfectly and he could no doubt hear her.

The city.” A deep sigh and a flick of the thumb towards Alvadas. “It is making me crazy.” The man broke out, laughing heavily at this like it was a joke. Aenisa had been telling the same to anyone she encountered, the city was really driving her up the wall and it was becoming bad. Some days she just wanted to take the god Ionu by its throat and strangle it and then dunk its lifeless body in a fountain until it drowned too. The illusions and the funny business that was going on, it wasn’t funny anymore.

Pain and Revenge

14th of Spring - 517 AV

After having finished the conversation with the man, who it had turned out was there to see if there were any precious gems coming from the sea that day. Aenisa walked around in The Patchwork Port for some time, admiring the variety of houses in the port as well as observing the behaviour of the birds in the skies above. Although there were a lot of people around and nobody was paying any attention to the short Inarta redheaded woman that was strolling through the alleyways and by the small shops. Aenisa was feeling as if she was being followed by someone or something, she had this feeling quite often inside of the city of Alvadas and it was hard to explain what it truly was. Ducking into a side-alley, quickly she pressed herself into a door-opening and tried to make herself as invisible as possible. Painted black, the door clashed perfectly with the otherwise red house that she had by accident chosen for her little paranoid adventure. It probably wasn’t anything to be afraid of, just her mind playing tricks on her since her many encounters and escapes from that man that Ionu liked to send after her. Still though, she stood and waited in the deserted alleyway, it wasn’t that long and so if someone did follow her they would assume she had made it through, she hoped.

The soft shoes that passed her by confirmed her suspicions, she was being followed, in her mind at least. As the black-clad figure had passed Aenisa by in a hurry towards the other end of the alleyway, Aenisa quickly leaned out from the alcove and watched. He carried on to the end of the alleyway, stood, head turning left and right, after a few moments time he shot off towards the docks again, down the road. It looked like the man was trying to not blend into the general working crowd of the docks town, he was wearing a long robe-like apparel to the rest of the workers who mostly wore something rugged and dependable but easy. He stuck out like a sore thumb and for a moment it did cross her mind that perhaps he hadn’t been after her at all. Pushing the idea out of her mind she decided to let the incident be. Aenisa hurried out of the port and back towards the city again, she had done what she had come there for and now she needed to go and buy that bow that she had seen at The Bizarre.

Aenisa came back through The Gaping Maw and past the Sanity Center, this time she was moving with the waning stream of haulers and merchants. As she had come back to the city it was almost mid-day already and most of the shops were now open and fully stocked for the day. A group of young messengers hurried past Aenisa, gently bumping into her before moving on without as much as an apology. It was just the type of a person who works all day, moving around the streets and after so many bumps and collisions there isn’t enough apologies left to give. Shrugging it all off she was soon before The Bizarre. It seemed as if Ionu was looking on her favourably for the day as the streets seemed to be moulded to her needs, running along the city like swift corridors or pathways.

Jampacked with people as Aenisa came through the entrance, The Bizarre always seemed to stretch on forever as you came into the rather unassuming looking building. Aenisa had memorised the pathway to the stall where she would buy her bow too, she had walked past it every day for the past week, looking at her bow. Today she had decided that she was going to buy it and test it in the woods too. As with the rest of the city in these times of festivities, a lot of people seemed to always be out in the streets to celebrate the festival of illusion. The Bizarre was not an exception. Aenisa found herself, once more having to battle with a stream of people that seemed to always somehow be moving in the opposite direction of herself. As the stream of people were easing up a bit, Aenisa had made it into the main part of the bazaar, she stopped for a moment at a crossroads so that she could get her bearings. A shop boasting of the finest pelts in the Bizarre was positioned at the crossroads, a dark bearded man was shouting out his offers to the passing crowds. A woman caught his eyes and was quickly flagged down, taken into the shop and out of sight, no doubt to be sold a fur that she did not need. As boring as the view of the crossroads might have been, the colours of the stalls and those that moved within the Bizarre was in stark contrast. Colourful dresses, colourful drapes and curtains hung everywhere. It was hard to fit into the environment around you, unless you moved with a larger group of people, something that Aenisa had tried to do when she had gotten to the Bizarre the first time.

He stood out like a sore thumb, again. Aenisa assumed at least that it was a he, clad in all black and with a hood covering his head, he moved through the crowd like nobody else saw him. Aenisa saw him. Had the figure managed to follow her from the docks? She had hidden from him and yet, here he was, again. Aenisa felt a little uneasy by the presence of the figure, what did it want with her? Aenisa quickly went down a completely different road from the one that she had wanted to go down. Hurrying along as quickly as her feet would carry her without her running or looking scared, she was soon at the next, and then the next, and then the next crossroads. As she was going further and further into the Bizarre the flow of people was thinning out, the figure did not deviate from her course. Casting a look over her shoulder, she could see it was still following her, Aenisa stumbled, caught herself against one of the stalls.

You okay there, young girl?”

The question was ignored by Aenisa, she cut down what appeared to be a small alleyway, decently devoid of stalls and storefronts, her fingers trailing the wall as she walked, always checking where she had come from. Black robes came around the corner to follow her through the alleyway too. Her heart started to race, it was truly following her, she stumbled, caught herself again. Her feet now carried her all the quicker along the path towards the next crossroads. Aenisa was running. Casting a glance over her shoulder, the black figure was running too. Aenisa pushed against the wall as she reached the end of the alleyway, shooting in the other direction as she was running to get away from whomever it was that was following her. Panting she came out of the alleyway at great speeds, the people that saw her coming moved out of her way, those that didn’t were moved by her. Aenisa darted through alleyways and streets to the shouts of the people that stood in her way, she could not shake the figure that followed her. She was so focused on the figure that she had failed to realise that she was running into darkness, until it was too late.

It enclosed her like a cage, darkness. Nothing in it except for a small light that seemed to be in the far distance. Aenisa came to a full stop as the fear of the following figure turned to confusion as to what was going on. Turning this way and that, nothing but Darkness and a light that was now moving ever closer, the sound coming from around her spoke with a hoarse whisper to its tone.

Stop running, it is futile.”

Who is it?!” Aenisa shouted back out into the darkness from where she stood, arms coming up to protect her face from any incoming attacks. Her actions were met with a raspy laugher, this only further made Aenisa angry, she was still panting as she stood, adrenaline still pumping through her veins as she shouted out into the blackness. “Show yourself!”

Very well.” The voice said, the light came rushing to rest just above her shoulders and to illuminate the figure, black-clad and dressed from head to toe.

Although the darkness had faded quickly with the bright light that now hovered above Aenisa’s shoulder, the figure seemed to be immune to its illuminating properties. A dark mist seemed to flow just short of the hood, like there was a shadow that was contained within the robes of her pursuer. The Bizarre used to be warm but the darkness of the figure before her was something that Aenisa had never before felt during her days in the city. Ionu must be playing tricks on her, the god had after all seen it fit to reward her with no labyrinths during the day, perhaps this was his fun with her for the day. Not knowing what she should do about the situation that she was in, Aenisa did nothing for the moment being and stood there, staring into the darkness that was the robes of the figure before her. It still wasn’t obvious to her if this was all an illusion or if she had just encountered some super-human being.

Well?” The whispery voice came from within the robes, almost taunting her, daring her to sink her hand into the blackness that lay within the clothes. “You satisfied?”

It took a moment for Aenisa to wrap her mind around the words and even longer before she was sane enough to respond to the question that she had been asked. “What is you?” It wasn’t fear that was doing the talking for Aenisa even though there were a bit of that rushing through her body, mostly it was the curiosity that spoke for her. As she had spoken the words, she knew that she wouldn’t get an answer out of the figure that stood before her, sighing inwardly.

Your future.” The words were very vague and they were spoken with a slow whisper, pauses that left Aenisa wondering what was truly going on in the head of the figure. Slowly the mist was starting to fade from under the clothes of the figure and the light that was still hovering above Aenisa’s shoulder could penetrate further into the hood. “I am, you!” It came in an ever-increasing intensity of the voice, quickly the mist faded, blackness fell away, dark robes turning grey like they had been bleached in the sun for years and years. From the darkness, bleached bones became exposed, hollow and void of life, no flesh, no blood, just sun-bleached bones. Teeth left exposed and missing, shattered jawline and scars, dents and cuts that spoke of the violent death that the vessel had undergone. The skeleton had been left in a perpetual state of suffering, giving off a surreal feeling of dread to those that saw it. The sudden visual attack and turn of events left Aenisa unprepared. She was reacting on pure instinct now. Wanting to scream out, it was futile her body quickly told her, so she didn’t. Before Aenisa had realised what was happening, her right arm was swinging for the ethereal in front of her.

Silence

Nothing, darkness and frigid air was all that her hand struck, the bones of the apparition had left the plains of existence. With the throw of the punch, her eyes had shut themselves tight, a light stumble as her hand didn’t connect and a scared Inarta looked out from beyond her little shelter that was her eyelids.

Standing in the middle of the market road, she had almost hit an older gentleman who looked thoroughly confused and a bit irritated with the young woman. Aenisa looked around franticly as she tried to understand what was really going on. “What do you think you are doing? You could have hit me!” The man demanded of her, he was prodding his index finger against Aenisa’s shoulder to prove his point. Aenisa stared back at the man, shook her head a few more time and then pushed him aside as she took off running from the street. Something had happened just then, she had been with a dead person, she had seen death, she had spoken with death and it was her, was it truly her though? Ducking into the nearest street she hurried along the stalls as she was dodging people left and right, pushing her way through the crowds like she was being hunted again. Nobody was really following her now, except for the glances of those she passed, she was alone in the Bizarre.

She had to get that bow though, it was important, no matter what she had just seen in the streets, back there, the bow, she had to get it. The illusion that she had seen had scared Aenisa enough, she remembered that reading, that she had taken a while back, it had shown her death, what was it that it had meant now again? Aenisa couldn’t remember what she had been told by the woman that she had gone to, was it good, was it bad? Cursing her attention span for being too short and for being so selective sometimes, Aenisa came to a stop and took a few deep breaths, casting fleeting glances every which way until she was sure that she was alone again. It wasn’t very far to the weapons stall that she had chosen as her destination. Illusions be damned, she was going to get her bow, nothing was going to stop her for the day, it had been a good day so far after all. Ionu didn’t get everything their own way. Although she was standing in a somewhat busy intersection within the Bizarre, Aenisa ran her hand along her face as she was trying to push the images out of her mind. Hoping that the fingers would drag the memories of the illusion down and out of her head as they fell down her face. It didn’t happen.

14th of Spring - 517 AV

It wasn’t more than a few paces until she stood before the shoddy stall that the keeper had chosen to call a shop, the cheek of it all, it was almost enough to make Aenisa want to head elsewhere. Not wanting to stay for too long in the Bizarre because of her earlier encounter however she had chosen to make her purchase and disappear out the back. Although her purse had weighed heavy when she had first gotten to Alvadas, now it was almost half of what she had started with, city life, away from everyone, wasn’t cheap. This revelation drew a sigh from the woman and an odd look from the shopkeeper, who, took this as something of an offense. Aenisa ignored his gestures and simply pointed towards a bow that hung near him, saying.

Shortbow.”

Quick, easy, calm. Aenisa needed to appear as though she was in control of what she was doing and so had decided upon an approach of as few words as possible. This rather blunt approach to the art of shopping wasn’t taken well, the shopkeeper just shook his head at her slowly and said.

Some people these days, no respect and no politeness at all.”

It was a statement that just like the look, the gesture and his shop, flew right past Aenisa who either didn’t care or couldn’t be bothered to care. He disappeared behind the back of the shop, no doubt to get a hold of the desired item that she had picked out from his abysmal stall.

Aenisa stood at the front, waiting for the man and mulling over the events of the past hour or so in her head. It wasn’t completely clear to her what this all meant, did Ionu always have a meaning? That wasn’t clear either. Although it was about mid-day the lighting inside of the Bizarre seemed to not have shifted since she had been there last time. That was odd too. Having spent enough time in the city to know that nothing was normal and nothing was truly not-normal, Aenisa had learned to take the day as it came. In Wind Reach it had been strict times and a structure to her life, although she was working for Yuri, taking care of the birds and that was somewhat of a structure in itself, Aenisa wasn’t on any sort of set schedule. It was indeed impossible to try and figure out how long it would take one to get where you needed to be. One day it would be a few minutes, the next a few hours and in the worst case scenario, if Ionu had one of those days, it would take an eternity.

Casting glances every which way over her shoulders, as if she was being chased still, Aenisa was sticking out among the crowds of mostly calm shoppers. Other nearby shopkeepers were looking at her, making sure no doubt that she wasn’t a thief. Creaking wood and the sound of cloth against cloth made her focus back at where the shopkeeper had disappeared to collect her bow. He had reappeared and looking no happier than what he did when he had gone.

This will do it for you, I take it?”

He was holding the bow for her to see. Aenisa gestured for her to be allowed to feel the bow, her request being granted in silence. She drew the string back, feeling the tension in it as she watched how the wood bent around her feeble strength. At this, the shopkeeper drew a thin, satisfied smile. The bow would no doubt do fine for Aenisa and her hunting ideas, it wasn’t so much the equipment as the feeling of familiarity that she was after, having hunted with the bow as a child and teenager. A rush of adrenaline as she got to stalk her prey, predict the moves and then go for the kill.

She nodded in approval as she was done handling the bow, the tension felt right, not that she knew what it was supposed to feel. The wood of the bow seemed strong enough, but she had no idea if it truly was. It was a silly attempt on her behalf of faking it so that she might look like a better hunter than she was. It didn’t seem to matter to the shop keeper anyhow, he just watched her as she stood with the bow and then as she had seemed satisfied asked her. “Anything else you need? Perhaps some arrows?” The question had been obvious to the man, she wasn’t looking like anyone of any experience at all, it was a helpful nudge without destroying her little fantasy. Aenisa had forgotten about the arrows but as she was reminded, indicated that she needed a stack of them, not quite sure what that amount would turn out to be. “So, forty?” Came the question, a slight smirk on his features once more. Aenisa nodded and then she started to fish up the gold mizas from her pouch, placing them onto the stall as the keeper were wrapping her arrows up with a rope. Having wanted to sell her a real quiver for the arrows, Aenisa had denied, she didn’t think that it would be needed for the time being, not like she was going out into battle or anything. Having paid for her goods, Aenisa made for the exit of the Bizarre, it was bizarre how she felt like a thief every time that she came out of this place. Although she hadn’t haggled for the price at all today, it was still as if she had gotten the items that she had wanted for next to nothing. It wasn’t true and Aenisa knew it, she was draining her reserves fast, she needed to hold out until Yuri was going to pay her.

• Sore leg muscles for two days. A nuisance more than anything serious.
• Multiple scrapes cover Aenisa's arms and face. They will sting a little, but heal without medical treatment within one week, if kept clean.

N O T E S

This is very intriguing, and I look forward to reading part two, especially with the hook you threw out at the beginning. I haven't added the beating she's received to the injury list yet, since part two is already written and I'd rather judge them when I've seen a bit more of the reaction.
