A few streets from the Wolf's Cave

The tiny Dhani scurried along the alley, her feet soaked, her head bowed against the rain and occasional fish that bounced against her cloaked hood. Overhead, the sky trembled with tar black clouds and charcoal lightening stained the heavens with weird shadows and light that made Ssanya feel distinctly uneasy. A loud boom rattled through the air, and the wind howled in sympathy. Ssanya merely hurried her step and prayed fervently to Ionu that the Wolf's Cave, her home, was nearby.

The narrow alleyway ended at a fork, one street climbing a small hill thronged with houses and the other widening out into a kind of market square, empty and haunting. The puddles on the floor were shiny like glass and the streets were littered with fish of all sizes. The maledictor hesitated before stepping into the plaza, narrowly avoiding a large, silvery fish landing heavily beside her. Gods but Alvadas was strange, she thought, as her footsteps sped up and she jogged nervously past the houses and shops that lined the street.

The storm raged overhead, throwing shard-like rain against her sodden cloak, sending her brown hair flying as a sharp gust of wind tore her hood off. With rain stinging her eyes, and yet more lightening falling what seemed to be disturbingly close, she couldn't help but grin as the welcoming entrance to the Wolf's Cave suddenly appeared around a bend.

Yet..- she skidded to a halt abruptly. Of course Ionu would make things difficult and create some kind of monstrous, fish-headed, lightening monster, made entirely of black light, enthusiasm, and tiny silver fish swimming in its body. There would be little luck in trying to get past such a thing, but she grabbed the nearest fish, it's scales slimy and cold, and lobbed it in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, the creature simply looked at it and refused to budge.

Ssanya sighed, keeping her hood on her head with her free hand, and walked to the nearest wall to eek some kind of shelter from the stone. She thought, hard, wondering what on earth she had to do to get into the place. The monster was stationary but didn't look safe, as such. She could attempt to walk past..- it snarled, then, snarled like rumbling thunder, and Ssanya clutched her forehead, feeling light-headed suddenly.

At least she knew the answer now- try another way...

About a week into his stay in Alvadas, and Draas was finally beginning to understand the surreal, backwards nature of the place. It did not necessarily make his life there any easier, but at least he wasn't getting sidelined by every terrain change and flickering illusion that crossed his path. He'd taken to travelling over rooftops whenever he could; it was not any easier than walking the streets, but the vantage point made him feel like he was doing better, and that counted for a lot.

He even caught a fish before it hit him, when the rain started. It looked pretty impressive. Sure, the next one pretty much beaned him in the face to make up for it... but...

Okay, maybe being up on an open, unprotected rooftop wasn't such a great idea right now. That's why his silhouette appeared on the top edge of the Wolf's Cave building, hunkering down so as not to get knocked off by a particularly large sturgeon or something. Peering down into the street was no easy task, between the rain stinging his eyes and the confusing swirl of silver shapes everywhere--but after a while, as he looked for an easy way down, he was able to spot the shape of a girl not very far away. He didn't even realize there was some sort of creature there, too, until a sudden thunder-clap of a roar below nearly startled him right off his perch.

He scrambled back, but didn't have much time to think--quickly rolling out of the way as a fish fell with a splat where he had just been. He was tired, cold, and not in any mood to be bludgeoned with sea creatures, so he decided to try his luck with the thunderclap being instead.

It looked kind of like a school of fish, right? And the best way to break up a school of fish was to swim right through the middle of it. Or jump.

It was a terrible idea, all things considered, but his form reappeared on the rooftop only to jump off of it a moment later, falling straight through the center of the guarding mass of energy in front of the door.

[Wolf's Cave] Beasts Of The Earth And Sky (Draas)

Postby Sorla on April 28th, 2017, 9:36 pm

Of all the things that had happened since she came to Alvadas, this fish storm was definitely the strangest. Although it was still daytime, the city felt dark and even more mysterious than usual under the thick clouds. On the other hand, Rikar was having a great time, swooping around and catching some of the smaller fish in his beak. Sorla thought she might as well make the most of the situation, and stuffed a couple of silvery ones into her backpack, where they continued to flap in a deeply unpleasant way for much longer than she was expecting.

She continued on through the rain, glad of her thick fur-lined katinu, and then turned a corner and noticed a small woman in the street. Sorla was astonished. Even for Alvadans, choosing to stand in a fish storm was highly peculiar behaviour. Why wasn't she trying to get inside as quickly as possible? Even at the same time as wondering whether or not the woman was mad, Sorla couldn't help noticing her intriguing dark eyes. They were of a colour and shape she had not seen before, but they certainly suited her. But it was no time to be thinking of things like that in the middle of an oceanic storm.

Sorla turned to look down the alley towards where the woman seemed to be looking, just in time to notice two extraordinary things. The first was a large pulsating ball of blackness filled with tiny glinting fish. The second was what looked like a person - although it moved in a very unusual way, come to think of it - hurl themself - or itself - off a rooftop and right into the centre of the fishy blackness. The fish inside swirled chaotically for a moment, trying to get out of the person's way, but as the person kept falling the fish reformed themselves into a tight-packed school. She couldn't see the person at all, although to be fair she couldn't see much given the rain and the darkness. She ran forward to see if she could see what had happened to whoever it was, but as she approached the monstrous ball there was a roll of thunder, closer than she had ever heard before, that made her reel backwards. She pushed forwards again, and again the thunderclap seemed to be pounding inside her own head. She realized the black substance must be some kind of monster, and that it was warning her to go no closer. She turned back in defeat and ran towards the girl. 'Help!' she shouted, 'quick! Did you see that person jump in? We've got to help them?' As she said the words she could hear how ridiculous they sounded. How exactly was she planning on helping? She cast around for an idea. She optimistically threw some dead fish from the ground at the monster, but as she had expected they had no effect whatsoever. She would have to think harder.

The monster was in some way thundery, that much was clear. It had appeared in the middle of the storm, and it was capable of producing thunderclaps out of its own being. That might mean it was lightningy as well, as thunder and lightning always come as a pair. She had a sudden memory of a story she had heard long ago in Wind Reach. It told of an Endal whose Wind Eagle had been blown into a tall tree during a fierce storm, toppling him to the ground while his eagle stayed, entangled in the violently rocking branches. The tree had no low-hanging boughs to climb, so the Endal thought quickly and tied a rope to an arrow before firing the arrow up into the tree. If he could get it caught in a branch, it might hold his weight long enough for him to climb up and rescue his eagle. But as he fired it high into the air, a flash of lightening struck the arrow, travelled down the rope and killed the Endal on the spot, as if the fire of the lightning had been drawn down out of the sky. The bird had survived the storm and told the other eagles what had happened to his rider.

Sorla wondered. Maybe, just maybe... if the monster was like a storm, could firing an arrow at it draw the lightning out of it and weaken it? As far as plans go it was not only extremely tentative, but given the fate of the Endal, possibly fatal, but she couldn't think of anything else and whoever had jumped in was clearly in need of help and fast, so she tied a rope around the shaft of an arrow, took aim at the centre of the fishy mass, and fired. The second the arrow left her bow she threw the bow as far away from herself as possible and ran back, calling to the girl to get away as well.

[Wolf's Cave] Beasts Of The Earth And Sky (Draas)

Postby Enola on April 30th, 2017, 6:52 pm

Enola sighed from her hiding spot, just under the overhang from a stack of crates, as the rain fell heavily. She'd been inside for the brunt of it, working with a customer who'd been seeking herbal help for insomnia. It had been an easy enough request, but just as Enola had stepped out the door, she had nearly been squashed by a large fish having fallen from the sky. Looking out through the dark storm, it seemed as if the falling fish wouldn't be ending any time soon. But she needed to get home, and could feel the key hanging around her neck tugging toward the north.

And northward was up the street, through the thick of it. She cinched her backpack a bit tighter, to ready herself for the run of her life. She cast her eyes upward, wondering if she could see the fish falling out ahead of her before they landed. But the speed with which they fell, and with how dark it was, it was an impossible task. So a different tactic would be needed. She'd need to go from safe spot to safe spot. Looking across the street, she saw a parked cart. That'd be her next spot. She bounced up and down on her clay feet, then started forward, pumping her little arms as best she could, keeping her eyes in front of her.

She ran in a straight line, as hard and fast as she could manage, seeing fish hitting the ground all around her field of vision. Up ahead was a puddle, one that she couldn't tell just how deep it was. She started to change her path to avoid it, but at the last second her path was cut off suddenly by a large salmon that squelched hard when it landed. She veered toward the puddle, and when she reached the edge of it, she jumped, hoping to clear it. And almost did. But her landing foot hit the edge, and she slipped. She stumbled backwards, discovering the puddle was quite shallow. She regained her footing, looking down in the water, seeing a silvery color above her. Not thinking, she dove forward out of the puddle, skidding along the cobblestones just as rainbow trout splashed into the puddle where she'd been standing.

She pulled herself up, hurting a bit from the fall and immediately set off in a run again. She was about halfway to the cart, she could definitely use the cover and rest. As she closed in on it, a small mouth bass flopped down in front of her. She didn't have the time to stop, so she just kept forward, trying to climb up over it. It was a fat fish, and she slipped and stumbled up it, but managed. She jumped off of it, still pumping as she ran until finally, she was under the safety of the cart.

The tug on her key still pulled north, and it was faint, so she still had a long way to go. Looking further up ahead she saw a fairly unexpected sight. There was, for lack of a better term, a storm monster. And someone had just fallen, or jumped, into it. That seemed like a terrible idea, a reckless one for sure, in her mind. She saw a woman shoot an arrow at it, then toss away her bow before jumping away. The black lightning snaked for the arrow, and followed the length of rope, cracking loudly, setting it ablaze. And it seemed to have lessened the monster's lightning. But for how long?

She didn't recognize any of these people, but people that needed help were always the most grateful. She didn't dare pull out her py-string, for fear of what happened to the arrow-rope. So she looked around the road for anything of use. Hanging across the road, tied between buildings was a large cloth, decorative of course. It was soaking wet of course, but maybe it could be used as a distraction or even restraint for the creature.

She ran along the walls of the buildings, saying a quick prayer to Ionu to not squish her with a fish just yet. Once she'd reached the building the sign hung from on one side, she looked up the brick facade. She doubted she could climb that, though she made a note to try under less hectic circumstances. But there was a clay pipe on the corner, that run to some gutters above. She could work with that. She went up and hugged the pipe, stretching her arms until the met around on the other side. She combined the clay, and leaned back, elongating her arms. She pressed her feet against the pipe and began pull-walking-climbing up it. She'd slide her joined arms up, holding herself by the weight of her body, then walking up to meet them. It gave her a strange view, looking straight up at the rain. She kept her eyes open for fish, doing her best to ignore the rain.

Higher and higher she climbed, feeling the strain in her arms, she moved quicker, until finally she was at the top. She pulled herself up and over the gutter and found herself face to face with the eye bolt that held up the cloth. Then she realized she had no blade or tool to free the cloth. But the roof she was on was shingled. She stood atop a shingle, and reached down, gripping at one edge of the piece of shale, and pulled upward on it. She strained and strained until it finally snapped in half. Wielding it like some awkward two handed weapon, she lugged it over to the cloth, and using the sharp, cracked side, swung down at it. The cloth frayed a bit, and she swung it down again in the same spot. One more swing, and with a snap, the cloth let loose, and swung down toward the monster.

At that same moment, a fish that had hit the roof, slid down and crashed into Enola. The pycon, fish, and piece of slate flew off the roof toward the street below. She curled up around her head, doing everything she could to protect her nexus from the presumably hard landing she was expecting to have.

[Wolf's Cave] Beasts Of The Earth And Sky (Draas)

Postby Sorla on May 17th, 2017, 4:17 pm

Sorla's arrow had not really affected the monster at all. The rope sizzled slightly as it landed on the ground, but the pulsating blackness had not been harmed by the arrowhead itself in any visible way, and the slight reduction in lightning inside it was only shortlived. She felt slightly silly for telling the small woman to get out of the way and then producing a complete anticlimax of a plan. She huddled into the front of a building with a large sign above it, trying to at least protect her back from the rain and fish while she thought of another idea. Rikar was still swooping around above her head, having a grand time. Maybe she could use him? She didn't want to hurt her beloved crow, but was there some way she could make the most of the fact that he was light and could fly? She racked her brains for a while but nothing obvious suggested itself. She looked up at the sky, as if hoping to find inspiration there, but what she actually got was rather different.

The first thing to hit her in the face was a large, writhing fish. The scales scraped down the side of her cheek as it bounced off her nose, and she reflexively turned her head away. It was at that point that she felt a much harder blow on the side of her head, a solid, blunt corner that cracked right into her temple. Tiny sparks of light exploded behind her eyes and she collapsed in a faint. If she had been conscious, she would have felt yet another impact: a softer one this time, as of a small, clayey object pummelling her through the folds of fabric formed by her cloak across her chest. Meanwhile a wringing wet decorative banner was for some unknown reason swinging out and down across the street and into the fishy monster. The ball's only response was to roar its loudest thunderclap yet, making the brains of everyone present shudder in their skullcases and jerking Sorla into a woozy, half-waking state just in time to see the mass of glinting blackness start to move forwards along the street. She could have been hallucinating from the blow to her head, but she could swear it was looking at her with two fish that were where its eyes should have been.
