Za'ir Character History
Za'ir was born in Sunberth, a city of anarchy, rage, and depravity. His father, Zaven Torosian was a Maledictor who sold his wares in secret through fences and hidden markets. His mother, Syble, was a researcher at heart and had a deep rooted disgust at the level of ignorance in the city. It was his mother that introduced Za'ir to magical theory and taught him the basics of Nader-Canoch.
Za'ir was fifteen years old when his mother was caught in the street during a riot and murdered by the whim of the mob. This was disastrous for Zaven, who deeply loved his wife, and he gradually descended into a kind of manic depression. Zaven, though he did love Za'ir, was a harsh man and had little time to raise his son, particularly in his rapidly devolving mental state. This left Za'ir to his own devices, which primarily meant hiding away in his fathers home and reading research notes that his mother had compiled. This legacy from his mother is what began the thirst for knowledge in his heart.
Zaven picked up on this interest in the arcane arts budding in his son and this mutual interest drew him nominally out of his despair. He taught Za'ir that all creatures, living or dead, are made up of an energy called djed. He taught Za'ir that the art of Malediction allowed one to harness the power of that energy and create talismans to exercise that power. Zaven also was able to begin to show Za'ir the way that wizards were able to learn about people and magical things around them, the art of Auristics. Cautioning his son that it was far better to learn about his creations by studying its aura then by haphazardly trying them on to find out its purpose.
Zaven eventually joined his father in selling Maledicted artifacts to the secret markets of the city. He had little to do with the actual sales however, as Zaven refused to allow his son to take on such a risk. Unfortunately, Zaven's trade of choice would eventually catch up to him. Za'ir was around thirty years old when one of his father's attempted sales turned into a trap and his secret was exposed. Zaven was publicly executed by the people of Sunberth, under the crime of magical activity.
Za'ir immediately fled the city, when he managed to find his way out, he fled to Zeltiva, a place his mother had spoke highly of on numerous occasions. Za'ir loved Zeltiva, the devotion to learning there was commendable in his mind. He stayed in the city for several years. He was eventually approached by a wizard that even to this day is unknown to him. This wizard convinced Za'ir that there was only one city in the world worthy of true magical research, Sahova.
The idea of studying in this city became something of an obsession for Za'ir, who spent the next several years arranging travel and gathering funds for his move to the great city of Nuit wizards. When he eventually arrived, he waited around in the harbor for several weeks, during which he was able to learn a few words and phrases in Fratava, the trade tongue of the Svefra. It was also during this time that Za'ir decided to petition the Island to turn him into a Nuit. The disadvantages of the state of undeath bore no weight in his mind. The idea that he would be able to pursue research endlessly and never have to face his great fear of death were far more than enough motivation to quell any fear of his new state. Directly after his turning, Za'ir had determined to seek an apprenticeship on the Island, hoping to glean off of the brilliance found in this remarkable city. |
