Samuel stared in confusion as the order rang out. He stood transfixed, unable to process what he was seeing. Has it really gotten that bad, he thought. Are we so low on food that the helpless are being turned away? The portcullis clanged down, sealing the city from those who waited outside. The knight grimaced, two conflicting emotions pulling at him. He knew these people needed help, it was clear that many of them were suffering in the heat. He knew that some would possibly die because of the decision that had been made. But the council seemed to think that it was the preferable option. His face went pale, perhaps the food situation was even more dire than he thought. Was the city in danger of starvation? Dino's wares hadn't been much more expensive than usual, but Samuel wondered if that had been influenced by the fact that the butcher was selling to a knight. He wanted to believe that the council would open up the gates again soon, but the commander had mentioned a census. A census would be a lengthy process.
Samuel walked over to the gate, knowing that although he didn't have much time to spare he would regret it if he didn't see exactly what was going on. There was a knight trying to comfort those on the other side of the gate, directing them to a place of relative safety.
“If you don't want to wait then head south-west to Riverfall.” she said, “You'll be safe there. They will take you in.”
Pain filled Samuel's eyes, such a sight appalled him. A knight should not have to turn away those in need, certainly not have to send them to a city so far away. The blue warriors of Riverfall would offer ample protection to those who arrived in the city, but he knew that such a journey would claim many lives.
“I hope you know what you're doing.” he said, looking up at the citadel. “These people need us.” Turning back to the multitude, he prayed to Yahal for their protection. Wiping his eyes, he turned away. There was nothing more he could do for them. He had his orders.
