[OOC] In the Murder

Postby Prophet on September 9th, 2017, 5:03 am

Greetings. Salutations.

Have a glass of fruit punch, it's delicious and I think you'll have time to enjoy some refreshment while I catch everyone up on what's been going on, what's about to happen and direction of things to come.

First, I want to thank Kayak for all of his hard work and creativity. He's a bit of a chucklehead sometimes but he's our chucklehead and we love him. Kudos, bruddah and keep up the good work.

Next, I want to touch on some of the obvious things. Ravok's forum is getting a makeover. The Docks forum was never really used properly so after discussing it with Kayak, we're going to utilize this space for all of our OOC stuff; this thread, requests, development, etc, etc, etc. All IC posts will now go in the main forum regardless of where they fall in Ravok; be it the city, the lakeshore, the docks or the northern outpost.

The calendar is up. It's chocked full of goodies and plots. I do want to add -since some people think I am just an evil, manipulative bastard- that any time we offer goodies to your PC, it is a gift and not a curse. We will not, as mods, trick you into anything that might damage your PC or get them killed. Now, that's not to say you won't be cursed in a thread where there are chaons present or be roughed up and possibly kidnapped by the Black Sun based upon a misunderstanding or your lack of personal hygiene. This is Ravok...shyke happens. I just want everyone to understand that we develop these little plots and trinkets to add to your roleplay experience. If fear was all we were after, we'd be in Sunberth.

This is Ravok... we are luxurious, educated and better than everyone else. That means our PCs need to have better stuff, na mean?

Moving on. I am slowly working my way through old moderation requests and will begin some of the events soonish. I know Yak has already begun his string of happy fun times so make sure you guys get signed up for the stuff you want. If you're on the fence, shoot one of us a PM and we'll help you figure it out or at the very least, it gives you an 'in' should you miss the deadline. Also, if you have not applied for a job or are waiting for a PM response from me in regards to such things, let me know. My inbox will have no messages for a week and then I'll get twelve while I'm at work. Odds are that I will miss one here and there so don't feel like you're bothering me. I'm here to help you write luscious stories so make sure I'm doing my job, yeah? (Feel free to spam Kayak with meaningless PMs. He loves to sort through nonsense.)

Kayak is spearheading an operation to upgrade a location via player participation. We're both very excited about this and nearly done with the actual development of the system which will be used to simplify the whole she-bang. Please keep your eyes peeled for more as we barrel down on the last few bits of detail.

I'm one guy. Kayak is one Canadian. We have our preferences for how things look, how they should be laid out and what works best. That doesn't mean we're the only ones who matter. It is in this manner of thinking in which I'm going to start a discussion thread for the Codex. There's a lot.... A LOT.... of information in that thing. What else could be added? What else should be added? Is it legible? Is it easy to navigate? Is there a better way? Should the linkmap be separate? Is there a particular article that needs to be edited/reworked completely? Should there be a separate PC library? These are questions that all of us should be able to address and answer if we choose. My ultimate goal is to have something that's simple, functional and accurate so that anyone -new or old- can come in and find exactly what they need without too much fuss. I still receive a good deal of inquiries about things that are listed in the Codex so I know it's not perfect. Let's make it better, gang.

In conjunction with the Codex Discussion thread, I will be opening up a Q&A thread. If I know the answer, I'll post it right away... if not, I'll get in touch with the people who know more than I do and find the answer. I even have a nifty idea on how to catalog everything so it's easier to see what other people have asked. That being said, none of this is going to be instantaneous-overnight-fixed-the-problem work.

There are new locations being developed. New plots are being shaped all of the time. If you have ideas for these things, we're going to figure out a way to have a more organized system of entry for these things than just info dumps. Those types of threads never really see much attention. My current theory is that we treat it much like the WD forum where a player takes his or her idea and writes it up in its own thread here in the OOC forum. All edits, discussions and revisions can be handled in that thread then when it's done, the STs can give it a look for a final nod. Thoughts? I would also like to have some kind of artwork thread for sharing images since Ravok is so unqiue, there's likely times when one stumbles upon a depiction that isn't what is being sought but could still be useful. Since Rhysol hears all prayers...we, as STs, should as well. I had a notion (if it would be used) to make a thread where players could link any prayers they posted in the Divine Connections forum. If you've not browsed this gem of Mizahar, I suggest you do so. It's a pretty awesome tool for your PC.

There's been talk about a thread to honor your fellow Ravokians. Did you read a post that gave you the chills? Has one PC absolutely caught your attention this season? We could put these things in the general OOC thread but do any of you think this could use its own space? What about a Wish List thread? Did I miss anything? If we get more players, maybe we make a thread just for members of the Ebonstryfe and Black Sun where you can hash out plots together and we can keep a running list of active writers.

If you can't tell, I am excited for the direction that Ravok is headed. We have great writers, a good set of mods and a wonderful site to use as our playground. The ultimate goal is to make a place that people wish to call home for their crazy, wild, silly, dark, sexy or just plain awesome thoughts. We want to know what you think. I'm not saying we're going to reinvent the wheel but I know everyone one of you who reads this will have at least one idea that you think will help make Ravok better and I want to hear it.

That is all.

Wo! Big stuff is happening with layouts. I had to look to find this (earlier I saw it in the "new posts" but didn't actually navigate here).

Anyways, I love the IC vs OOC layout/division. It makes a lot of sense in terms of structure and order and it keeps the main Ravok page focused on IC threads and only the most important reference pages.

One request for the Codex. Please please please put the linkmap at the very beginning. For me, it's the most frequent resource I use in the entire codex and it's annoying having to scroll or find the link or whatever.

Small note on the potential separate PC library... it seems a little redundant. I get the impression that that's what the character registry is for. Plus PCs move in and out of Ravok every season (be it ICly, or OOCly due to activity). It just seems like a "make-work" project for STs to keep it updated.
Alternatively, if you really wanted the idea, you could make a library where players post to it (kind of like a registry) and they put a summary of their character with important features. And then at the end of each season, if certain PCs are no longer active, then the ST can remove them from the library. That way, players can edit and present their info as they like.

That's all for now. Thanks for all the wonderful work you're both doing.

The Wish List thread is a great idea. Everything that pertains the whole city is best discussed in public where it can be better overviewed and organized.

I also suggest that the linkmap is broken out of the codex and placed in its own thread. I wouldn't mind if the entire codex was divided into separate threads thematically. It's too large to navigate comfortably.

Having several different OOC threads for different topics would be an improvement. The general OOC is useless to post long-term information in because after a week's time no one is going to check what someone wrote here 3 pages ago.

I will go farther than Sayana and say that a PC library would be worse than nothing. The character registry is the PC library. Having two threads with the same information will demand constant watching of both threads because asymmetrical updates will mislead the reader. It also adds nothing that doesn't already exist. If you want more information about a PC, check the registry for active players and read their character sheets. In general, having the same information listed in multiple different places is something to avoid and minimize whenever possible.

Thank you both for replying with useful feedback. I often find the buried linkmap causes me grief as well...

The PC library should have read NPC... <_< I'm in the midst of grading a massive thread but when I take another break, I'll get a thread up for the Codex discussion.

Also- Eva, you're absolutely correct about information being lost after a few pages have passed. We'll try to come up with some sort of way to address this as well.

There's an OOC page that might be helpful for making good matches and meaningful connections with other players. This would be an OOC posting board or 'bartering' system. Interested players could post things that their character can offer, and things that their character might be looking for.

For example, with Sayana.

Can offer:
- Teach the following skills: Dagger, Intelligence, Seduction, Dance
- Initiate/teach someone hypnotism (for a higher price)
- Offer ravosala rides
- Lend or pay medium amounts of money (50-150gm)
- Offer services as a spy
- Potentially room and board

Is looking for:
- Intelligence network contacts
- General rumors etc
- Contacts within the Ravok families, Ebonstryfe, and Black Sun
- Someone to teach her poison craft
- Steady supplier of daggers
- Tailor for custom clothing and/or modifications
- Someone to preach the word of Rhysol to her (ooc desire)

I vaguely recall seeing something of a similar nature in Riverfall. But I think it had something to do with creating open threads... or something. There was some other catch. Anyways, this would just be a straight forward list of things your character can offer and what they might be looking for (either in return, or some other deal might be reached).

That's a great idea, Sayana. This is something that could easily be kept in the registry. Kayak and I have talked about ways to make the registry more useful than fluff. This would certainly apply.

It's good to see some activity and feedback from you guys. We really appreciate it and will work with what we're given to implement the suggestions (which are certainly helpful).

Housekeeping:
Make sure you apply for a job.

Be certain to know your status in the city (citizen, non-citizen resident, visitor, slave, etc) and use the Registration Office accordingly.

Please feel free to ask questions about the events on the calendar. Kayak and I are always readily available via PM or CHAT.

WRITE! I would love nothing more than to see a bunch of people really get out and stretch their comfort zones to write new kinds of threads with different people. If you're having issues trying to come up with plots that aren't the same old stuff, hit up an ST or one of the many Vets here in Ravok.

EDIT::If you received a special flower last season, I need a PM detailing its abilities and/or affects so it can be documented in your SS thread.

Rhysol be with you.

My threads from last season are still ongoing, and I don't have any ideas of what to do with Shainn for Fall. What should I do?

Plan, plot, think of amazing things and learn to juggle multiple points in time at once. On Miz, you could be writing stories in this season and from several seasons ago.

Ravok has all kinds of events going on this season, so don't forget to check out the calendar.
