Alright... time to rise

Opening his eyes after a long moment of meditation, Elias found himself angrily regarding the placid training dummy staring defiantly back at him. Recent events had shown him just how unpracticed he was when it came to the martial prowess he would often laud over others, and as a man who sought conflict like a moth sought the flame, it seemed more and more imperative he find a way to fix such a troubling insufficiency. There was just no surviving in a city like Ravok -in a world like Mizahar- unless one was both willing and able to fight.

He was familiar with the basics of hand to hand combat, but he figured it was perhaps time he ventured forward in search of his own techniques. Many of his fellow soldier he’d seen fight and actively fought against in the past could have their move sets and attack patterns directly traced back to the instructors they’d learned them from right here at the Vitrax. They mimicked their masters just as they had been taught to as youths, but many had been content to simply leave it at that after their 'graduation.' Usually such a thing wouldn’t be an issue for the average stryfer, but for one like Elias whose day to day routine often involved a duel or two being demanded of him before breakfast, and often from those who fought just as he did for they had learned from the same people just as he did, then their understanding of the very foundation of his style left him exposed and vulnerable to those wise and skilled enough to pick up on it.

Predictability killed on the battlefield as much as it did in the streets.

Breathing steadily, the apprentice sought out the isle of calm that rest at the center of his being despite that thoughts that churned throughout his mind. Striking out once he’d found his peace, Elias brought his first forward to jab at one of the training dummy arms. As he did so, his other hand came out to block the oncoming strike of his inanimate enemy. The soldier struck his palm upward, pressing it into the wood and feeling the kickback of its immovability. He would be sore later, he could tell already, and his hands would likely be raw by the time he was finished with this particular training session, but he knew he would be stronger for it.

This training would be different than usual however, for the trainee was different than usual as well. Instead of ignoring or denying that simple fact, instead he intended to fully embrace it. Reaching deep inside, Elias opened himself up to the awareness that lingered on the edge of his mind. He dove into the ebb and flow of himself, taking a moment to focus the djed coursing throughout his veins solely into his arms. The magic was clumsy in his mental grasp. It felt heavy and barely compliant to his wishes, but with focus he was able to push the flow where he wanted it. Keeping hold of that power, Elias struck out again with an upward jab to the center of the training dummy.

His muscles felt heavier as a result of his exertion, even with such a simple rotation of moves. The control he maintained over the Flux was still sluggish at best, yet still he knew that the only way he was going to become more familiar with how it worked, how it flowed through his body, was by simply continuing to use it. The magic appealed to Elias not just because of the fact that it could enhance his physical strength, speed and reflexes, but its because its mastery demanded a familiar discipline. It resonated with notions of balance and familiarity with self that years in Ebonstryfe had burned into him before his exile. For years, Elias had felt a stranger in his own skin. Since returning to Ravok, it had only grown worse.

He hoped the magic -and the sweat- would somehow help.

Repositioning himself, Elias turned to face the training dummy from the side. He knew enough to angle his body so that he was less of a target, for the less of himself that was exposed, the more difficult it would be for his opponent to hit anything. It helped that he tended to keep moving as well. Elias had learned long ago that the quickest way to lose a fight was to be the fool that stood still. He also knew that the constant alterations to his foot work would assist in making both him and his moves less predictable. He wasn’t foolish enough to believe that any practiced fighter would be blind to his intentions with such petty and obvious distractions, but in a brawl, especially those where one’s life itself was on the line, the basics had a habit of being forgotten and thrown out the window in favor of the more animal instincts that many tried to plaster over with years of training and experience. He’d known that feeling of desperation and discord all too well, and wasn’t above exposing his opponents to it either.

He again dove into the river of energy that existed within himself, readying for the bout of combat to come. This time he compelled the strength of his body to flow downward into his right leg. What he envisioned was the rushing current of energy rippling over his limb. As he brought it up in a vicious side-swiping kick, Elias concentrated on the idea of that motion giving speed to his attack, and he felt the flow of energy pulse within. The soldier reckoned he had done that right all things considered, but given his very rudimentary control over the powers of the Flux, the most he could do at times was manipulate and watch events unfold. Sometimes the results were quite satisfying and visceral, but other times… not so much. As his shin impacted against the wood however, he winced, realizing he had struck perhaps a bit harder than he had intended.

Control, Elias.

The mage stepped back from the training dummy, allowing the power within to recede back into its normal state. A shiver went up his spine as he felt the maelstrom that rumbled within like a seething storm align itself properly once more. Taking a moment to resituate, Elias looked down at his hands, studying them intently. It was strange to possess even the smallest level of conscious awareness of his whole body. It was not what he would call direct awareness though. He simply felt more of… himself? He was beginning to have a finer understanding of how the djed within his body spurred into motion. The idea of it had always been there but to actually witness it, to feel it, to be able to tap into it, the experience awoke a resolve in Elias that had once simmered, but now burned brightly thanks to his finer understanding of Flux’s more intricate designs.

It was a thing of sheer beauty, and such brilliance had to be expressed the only way a soldier like him knew how...

With his fists.

Application. That's the key. Taking the pieces and putting them together to match the circumstances...

In the void his meditation had formed, Elias found a canvas for his thoughts. His limbs had regained their feeling entirely by now, but he was not concerned with them, only the images he made for himself in his mind before draped them upon his wooden accomplice like a mannequin.

The Flux was a powerful weapon, but at his current level, how much could he truly rely upon it after the first few blows? If that was case, then how best to make them count? What strikes did he need to apply first and foremost if given the opportunity? Blurred figures appeared in his mind's eye. Enemies. Yes, their stances revealed that much. Partly crouched, hands up, body language hostile, aggressive, their faces fell perfectly into place amidst the battered and bruised oak of his training dummy.

How best to use this? For the first blow...

The Stryfer was a still, calm, even his breathing was shallow and his chest barely heaved, but his mind was a whirl of possibilities and outcomes. Finally, after a few chimes, Elias’s eyes opened.

His phantom foes were mere outlines in the waking world, but Elias still had to put the knowledge into practice. He raised his arms, seeing the first figure before him as clear as day. In response, he willed the tingling stream of djed into his right shoulder then exploded forward, right straight a blur as his fist ripped through the air, slamming into his first enemy's splinter filled jaw. The soldier stepped forward sharply as he did, lending the crushing blow more power and keeping the djed pooled in his shoulder, ignoring the ache that began to fester there.

One wounded, perhaps down, but he's not alone-

"Swing High!" He muttered, new incantation on his lips. "Swing Hard!"

Elias unleashed his right arm out horizontally at jaw level, djed powering the attack like it was a lead ball on a chain. He could feel his balance desert him, footing failing, and only years of desperate combat experience kept him on his feet and satisfied to see his knuckles connect with his enemy's jaw, crunching the wood in reality and likely breaking the bone in his imagination.

Unless he ducked, which is possible. Adapt!

Snarling now, feeling his right side turn to fire under his skin, Elias kicked out with his left leg as his body spun around with his flailing right arm, foot smashing between his second target's legs as the Flux struggled to follow suit.

One more, just one more solid strike.

Djed now crackling and stinging his right arm as he raised it high and cocked it, he slammed the elbow into the back of the head of the doubled over second enemy.

Focus... Focus... Breath...

Keeping tight hold of the Flux energy building up inside of his leg, Elias rested his gaze to the dummy. He was beginning to work up a fine sheen of sweat from his exertions and the whole exercise certainly reminded him of the training he’d done with the weights that could be found in the gym nearby. Focusing on his breathing instead of the growing pushback he was enduring, the mage wanted to see just how long he could manage to keep control over the flow instead of resetting and resituating it as he often did. The muscles in his jaw flexed as he fought to keep the current within his mental bindings before -with as much quickness as he could muster, a speed that was made more devastating with the added enhancement of the Flux- he swung his leg forward, slamming it hard into the center post of the dummy.

There came a tingling in the arm. Pins and needles most unnatural. Don't overdo it. He chided himself. Don’t siphon too much away from one to feed the other.

Delving deep into the recesses of his djed, Elias drew upon the Flux once again. He directed the energy to his left arm this time instead of his right. Lashing out, the Ravokian went through a series of punches, completing a flurry of motion that flew by much more rapidly than his first attempt. The added speed brought on by the placement of energy within his left arm made for a noticeable improvement.

Instead of releasing the energy to allow it to dissipate, Elias redirected it to its next destination. He felt the resistance of the current within his body all at once. Furrowing his brow in concentration, he was determined to move beyond that, although it was hardly an easy process. The effort took much of his attention, forcing him to stand rigid in front of the training dummy for an absurd amount of time considering he was meant to be in the middle of a heated exchange right now.

He lunged again, right fist swinging forward, ripping through the wind with its unnatural force. He did not pause long that time, breathing in again and willing the djed to slide across his body and into his left side as his arm pulled back. A solid one-two combination of punches rocked the wooden foe with a force that would knock down most unsuspecting foes with such sledgehammer-like blows... if it wasn't for the lengthy pause in between, anyway.

He didn’t have long to revel in his works however, as before too long, the tingling had returned.

The young man winced and growled, the strain and ache of bells squeezing his limbs within the space of ticks. They felt heavy, sore, as if he'd slept on them and was now trying to lift weights. He walked in circles and shook them as best he could, face all screwed up in annoyance more than pain. Moderation. Always moderation, and caution with your power. He remembered the words and nodded as if they were spoken to him by a voice not his own, taking deep lungfuls of air to deaden the pain and waiting for his limbs to be his again and not just numb lumps attached to his shoulders.

Elias rolled his head from side to side and grinned at the clear, somber Fall sky.

Getting better..."

Any pain could be remedied, if given time and the proper balm, but Elias had learned that the cure for the particular kind of exhaustion the Flux caused was not so simply walked off. It was as much a spiritual fatigue as it was physical, and so after half a bell of pacing and sipping water, the proud son of Ravok sank down to the sand, legs crossed in something akin to a break.

Empty your mind, he whispered within himself as he closed his eyes, hands open, palms upward, resting on his knees, find that place again, we'll take it nice and slow. He wanted to add "easier said than done", but quelled the impulse. Meditation was found in calm, in peace; marring it with cynical jibes accomplished nothing. He focused instead on his breathing.

In.

Then out.

Ebb.

And Flow.

After chimes of overly patient, steady contemplation, the world seemed to fall from his ears and the touch of his skin. Elias felt himself floating, almost. The world around his bones seemed infinite in that dark, airless place. It sparked and throbbed with energy, enough to power anything. The more he breathed, the less he was aware of it, until the repetitive inahle and exhale of his lips seemed... separate from himself.

Rise.

Elias did so slowly, eyes still closed, as if he were afraid too sharp a movement would shatter this beautiful pseudo-illusion of oneness. When he was at his feet, though the feeling was still there. Tiny lightning bolts of djed seemed to crackle under his skin, and he could feel his body pulse with it.

The warrior opened his eyes, renewed.

Rolling his shoulders and drawing upon djed into his side, he pulled his hand close to his shoulder so his arm was inverted.

"Here we go…"

He scrunched up his bare toes on the ground, feeling the countless grains of icy dirt beneath them. A solid footing. Good, he would need it. Then he drew back his elbow a touch, crouching instinctively into a ready stance before swinging out his right elbow in a shattering strike.

Again.

Once again he felt the weight in his shoulder, breathed in sharply as he felt the tingles wrack his arm -suppressed the pain- shifted it over to his left side as his right arm dropped, repeating the inversion of his left arm.

Boom!

Every time he practiced, it got easier. Only the will and the discipline needed the repetition: acclimatizing his body to the constant flow of djed and moving it where needed instead of stopping and starting all over again every time he desired its power, that was the new challenge.

Don’t stop.

Now his left elbow hammered at the dummy, wind cracking around it like it truly was a sledgehammer. For a brief tick the Caldera enjoyed the damage it could cause: a djed-armored elbow could easily snape a jaw, even fracture a skull, and he still had so far yet to go. Once again he let his arm go back down, both at his side, ready to-

No…

He breathed, catching the aroma of the chilled Fall air and the distant smoke carried on the wind. He exhaled with a shuddering sigh, slowly edging his sore limbs into his knees again as his eyes closed and the power dissipated. He knew a sweet whisper when he heard it. It had shown its hand too soon, and Elias, a mage with more than a few years under his belt, was not about to let it enrapture him as it had done so many times before.

Control yourself, he commanded, feeling that arcane momentum within him beg for release, unused to such mistreatment and restrictions, give it time to heal and replenish. Then tomorrow….

Rise again.
