19th Day of Winter, 517 A.V.
If there was any silver lining as to the lack of a winter this season, it was that the fire reimancers who were seasonally hired to thaw the mines when they were cold were now delegated by Typhus Chivan to keep every inch of the mine well lit. Akajia herself had told the city that light was a powerful ally. And so that was taken to the furthest literal extent.
Quzon stepped off of the lift that had lowered him down into the depths of the mines while pushing a wheelbarrow. The half isur was tasked with filling the wheelbarrow with gem and was confident in getting that job done. The trip deeper into the gem mines allowed him to witness for himself that the Akalak did nothing half measured.
Torches lined every wall, hooded lanterns shined focused beams to keep bright any far patches of darkness, and glowing phosphorous stones known as opalgloams were embedded into the walls by earth reimancers where it was too dangerous to keep a flame.
"Careful."
A patrolling Cerulean called out to the half isur as he walked the mine towards the shaft where he'd been tasked to find the gem deposits of earth from the mine walls so they could then be harvested via sifting by labor workers and other reimancers above ground away from the dangers of working in the dark; which given all the lighting made darkness a hard thing to find.
"Make dangers known?" The pale Myrian spoke in gruff common. His grasp of the common language was getting better, but he still lacked in vocabulary to draw from which meant he spoke in short sentences. The Cerulean looked over the Half-Isur dressed in only a loincloth, while wearing a backpack, and a set of hunters hide; a cured bears hide that was draped around Quzon's body which made it seem like a bipedal bear was walking around as he wore its head as a helmet. "You are heading towards an area that is dimly lit and nearing the edge of the darkest regions. Use extreme caution."
Quzon gave the man a nod before moving on with his day. He found himself walking past the entrance to the mine shaft where he had lost his color vision to a Tainted Shadow. Quzon had left all of his torches within that mind shaft a few days ago, and took a moment to walk down that tunnel to see if he could find all five of the torches that he'd abandoned when he had to escape the tainted shadows. It took him hardly more than five chimes to find each of them exactly where he'd left them, then placed all of them into his backpack before leaving that mine shaft to find the area he was assigned to for the day.
Quzon relaxed into the familiar routine of the job, a comfortingly familiar thing that helped him not think of anything else while he was focused with his mind on the present. If a shadow was to appear, he'd deal with it when the time came. But for now, he let his emerald eyes follow the natural surface of the mine walls as pushed the wheelbarrow further into a dimly lit mining shaft.
Quzon learned how to spot beds of gem clusters from the Akalak geologist who were with him when he became color blind. "Find the earth along the walls that is discolored from the rest... Given the lost of my vision, it just means to find a vein of white lightly colored earth among the black stone of the walls."
As he walked, Quzon started to focus his sights on one point of the wall far ahead him him. He used that singular spot as a way to concentrate while willing the djed within his body into action. He drew upon the well of power that was his own djed. He willed that arcane energy to surge up his spine towards his mouth, and towards his lips. His every breath became deliberately slow up until he let out a soothing exhale from his nostrils that resulted in a gaseous plum of red glowing res float around his head. The size of the cloud of res was half the size of his head, but that was all he would need for the entirety of his job pulling earth.
He kept the cloud of res floating milometers away from his right ear. Quzon did that because the closer it was to him, the more control he had over the rest. He knew that half the battle of reimancy was due to res control.
