Character Concept
Koroshtoph Ephael Petyr is a man looking for purpose but acting as if he already has one. His long journey to Sunberth provided him with plenty of time to reflect on his life. On the long periods of listlessness, the terrible mental decline of his mother, the unattained dreams of his father; all this awakened in him a long dormant, bitter need for agency. Though he has little idea of what to expect in this new, by all accounts chaotic city, he possesses a great confidence in his ability to meet its challenge. It isn’t a hard earned confidence of someone who has faced and surmounted the many obstacles that life threw at him; it is rather a blind confidence, desperately kept alight in the unadmitted knowledge that its extinction would mean death.
Character History
Born as the only son of two Zeltivan immigrants Nathias Ephael and Zheferina Petyr, Koroshtoph's childhood was chiefly spent in the Bittern District of Syliras. He knew little of his parent's background, barely even being aware that they had themselves not been born in the fortress city. His father was a tenacious but humorless man, who started out working as a laborer at the docks, dreaming of one day buying his own fishing boat. His mother, as far as Koroshtoph could tell, used to be a scholar at some university that was only ever referenced as such. Ever since he was a toddler, he recalls her commanding a mystifying charisma which she wielded in all aspects of her life. Whether it was making her son obey or haggling with the local merchants, she very rarely failed to get what she wanted from people. A significant exception to this was her husband; it was always an occasion when she managed to alter his course of action. Though this would often frustrate her, Koroshtoph suspected it was a big reason for her affection for him.
He was around 7 years old when his mother began teaching him her ways. It began as soft cajoling. When he would accompany her to market, she would ask him to offer innocent remarks to merchants about what a competitor had claimed about his wares or to point to some imagined flaw on an item that would warrant a discount. He often stumbled over his words, and it took a long time before anyone responded with anything other than a wave of a hand.
As he grew into his early teens, his mother's instructions became more explicit. She would have him meditate with her and to attempt to project suggestions to her. "Focus on what you want me to think, Korosh". He didn't quite understand what his mother was trying to accomplish and often became frustrated with what seemed like a pointless exercise. However, she always managed to get him to participate, regardless of his initial reluctance. It took a long while before the first time this strange ritual bore any fruit, but Koroshtoph distinctly remembers the shock on his mothers face before it lit up. After the initial milestone, the previously tedious task became Koroshtoph's chief interest. His mother excitedly encouraged this newly found enthusiasm but cautioned him to be wary of not overextending himself. What followed were some of Koroshtophs's happiest years.
Unfortunately, as the seasons passed, Koroshtoph's mother darkened in disposition. She grew more and more detached, and the bond that had formed between them began to fray. Fits of paranoia would take her seemingly at random. With no discernable trigger, she would lash out in histrionics at both Koroshtoph and her husband. In her lucid moments, she would explain these outbursts with invasive thoughts that she claimed periodically assailed her mind. As her condition worsened, and as she lost more of her grip on reality, she began to blame Koroshtoph for her torment. She bemoaned having taught him her skill and could no longer stand being around him. As for his father, it was as if his existence was slowly fading from her awareness. It came to a point where her son was the only thing she knew existed, yet she did everything in her power to isolate herself from him.
Koroshtoph was devastated by his mother's irrational behavior. At first, he tried to get through to her, to glimpse the occasional moments of lucidity where she would return to her former self. However, as those moments grew further and further apart, he withdrew from her, no longer able to withstand the anguish of his fading hope for her recovery. Eventually, his mother's outbursts abated, replaced by a complete unresponsiveness.
Throughout the ordeal, his father tried to maintain an affected stoicism. Still, Koroshtoph often glimpsed flashes of despair on his face when he went to greet him upon his return from the docks, which would happen later and later in the evenings as time went on. Sometimes, his father would still speak wistfully of the fishing boat he had been working towards but alas the dream never came to fruition.
The skill his mother taught him now left a bitter taste in Koroshtoph's mouth. He rarely found himself honing it further. Thus, in his early adulthood, he found himself without a skill to secure his independence. Seeing the course of some of his peers, he decided to pursue a squireship with the Syliran Knights. A jovial man named Norn, some ten years his senior, took him under his wing as his patron knight. Over the two years that Koroshtoph served as squire, they developed something of a brotherly bond. As part of his training, Norn instructed him in the basic physical skills that went into being a Knight, but above all, he inducted him into the values of the order and instilled in him respect and an appreciation for the law that governed Syliras. A knighthood, however, was not to be. Though he grew to admire their ideals and the concept of being a knight, Koroshtoph never quite qualified for the position. He did well enough with the sword, but ranged weaponry and especially horseback riding always eluded him.
After his failed, short-lived attempt at a career as a squire, he and Norn gradually grew apart. Koroshtoph began to spend more time at his parent's home. Though it pained him to see the woman he once admired reduced to a lethargic, bed-ridden shell of a human being, he resigned himself to caring for her while his father continued to work at the docks. However, years of labor took a toll on the old man, and it would only be a couple of years before he could no longer perform his job.
On the day his father resigned from his post at the docks, he came home with an unexpected spark in his eyes. It was as if a burden of his dream had been lifted from his shoulder. He told his son they were going to use their savings to travel to Zeltiva with Koroshtoph's mother. Koroshtoph offered no resistance to the idea; the drudgery of his day to day life and the bitter memories that the house held for him made the prospect of leaving enticing.
For a considerable sum, his father bought them passage on a merchant ship, making a voyage the ancient gem of the Mizaharian coast. Koroshtoph never heard him say it, but he suspected that his father believed being back in Zeltiva would soothe his wife's condition. And though the fresh sea air seemed, at times, to bring a long-absent smile to her lips, she never glimpsed the port of her birthplace. She passed away quietly in the night of the 50th day of their journey. Her husband did not live long to grieve his loss. He died only a week after his wife.
Having lost the person he knew as his mother years ago, Koroshtoph was much more deeply affected by his father's death. The expedition seemed to lose its purpose and upon arriving at the destination, he spent only a short week there. On a lark, out of a desire to fill his life with at least an illusion of direction, he boarded a ship heading to someplace called "Sunberth".
