Hazel eyes had a slight luminescent glow to them as they were enhanced with Auristics. Djed was flowing through Kynier’s body in multiple directions to accomplish multiple purposes. The smaller current of power climbed his spine and slivered its way to his eyes in order to keep his Sight open. There were no special auras in the Training Room of the Midnight Gem. While the structure itself was now teeming with power, the aura it projected was not much more substantial than it had been before Kelski activated the Architectrix. The reason for his eyes to be empowered with the Sight was so that he could better perform the other function that his Djed was accomplishing.
Power was radiating from his hands as his will was directing it into a weave. Kynier was experimenting with the weave’s density while forming the Shield. There was no special task involved as it was meant to serve the basic function of a Shield. Block Djed. He intended to be throwing some powerful Reimancy at the shield and knew he was going to need to recreate it a few times. If it were thicker, it could potentially take at least one more application of Reimancy before needing to be remade.
The strands of magic were thicker than how he normally formed the shield which normally would cause it to cover less surface area. Kynier was enveloping one of the combat training dummies with the shield and did not need much surface area to begin with. As the last of the Shield weave was made, Kynier took a step back to critique it. It was thicker, but how much was difficult to determine. Normally he had done Shielding without the use of Auristics and relied more on his sense of… his magical aptitude when constructing a shield. But it looked decent. Kynier closed his eyes and ceased the flow of Djed to his eyes.
However, he did not let go of his hold of his power. Taking several steps backwards, Kynier conjured the Djed to his hands where it transmuted into a liquid res. When he was ten paces away from the target he stopped. Normal hazel eyes opened to observe the res in his hands. Farris merely described it as Fire and Air, but how was the combination made? Air first. Adding air to a normal fire typically just makes it larger or attempts to put it out. Kynier took a little less than half the res and converted it to Air. Then his intent focused on a large portion of the unused mystic material as he concentrated on forming fire.
A few sparks of power ignited among the artificial air. He felt the res being consumed rapidly despite how it generated no results. After a moment, all the remaining res that had not been changed to air was spent and his control of the air vanished. Kynier sighed as he went to the stairs where two journals were laid out and open. He took the quill and began to make notes in the first one.

Utilizing Auristics while constructing a Shield is very helpful. Using more than just my mage senses for magic to generate a weave. The ability to see its construction definitely made the effort to increase the shield’s density a success. While the compromise is a diminished return on the amount of space the shield can cover, some applications are not negatively impacted by such a compromise. The shield itself is still very basic but is significantly better than those I have made in the past.

Kynier turned his attention to the other journal and started writing.
Eighty-Sixth of Summer, in the year 518 A.V.
Another mage had told me the secret to creating Lightning with Reimancy. That it is a para-element between Fire and Air. Unfortunately, he did not provide any more insights to how to make it function. Thus, I am endeavoring to discover the secret on my own. Using a Liquid State I first created Air then attempted to form Fire within it. There was a reaction that was not Fire, but no lightning had been produced. It is possible that there is a timing that is involved with succeeding at its creation. For I do not believe that creating Fire then Air is what would generate the desired result.
Setting the Mighty Quill down, Kynier returned to his position to attempt another casting of lightning. This time he was going to try and use the two elements in more rapid succession. As he stood there, staring at the training dummy, Kynier allowed every thought to slip from his mind as he entered a state of meditation. He raised his hands out in front of him at full extension in conjunction with a long exhale. From the Djed pool at the very base of his soul, he summoned more Djed than he typically did for any sort of casting. His body felt almost hot from the mystic energy surging forward to his hands.
The power flowed down to both hands to transmute into a res gas. As the translucent mist formed in front of him the mage filled his empty mind with intention. A mental will of creating air and fire at once with the image of a lightning bolt emerged. Breath, Ignition! The res in front of his hands rippled suddenly as small arcs of lightning danced through it like it were a cloud. In his mind he could feel the energy completely built up but was stagnant. As though it needed a push. Kynier took a step forward and made that push, both mentally and physically.
Lightning crackled and snapped violently until it shot forth from his outstretched hands. Slivering and zagging through the air it struck at the training dummy he had enveloped with a shield. Energy that was once transparent flared in a wide array of colors as the bolt of lightning collided with it. The base scrapped across the floor as the dummy was sent to violently crash into the far wall. When the echoes ceased the room was filled with only the sound of Kynier’s heavy breathing.
Wide hazel eyes stared at the target which was not laying on the floor. Hands were still held out in front of him partially as he was suspended in a state of disbelief. He had done it. It was only the first success, but he had in fact succeeded at summoning power to mimic a force of nature. The pride that swelled in his body broke him from his disbelief as he started laughing a triumphant laugh.

The second attempt has proven successful! However, there were a few things that had been done that could have been the source of the success. The first, significantly more Djed had been conjured to power the spell than what all my other uses in all other disciplines have required thus far. Second, the intention to create Air and Fire was nearly simultaneous. What I had not anticipated was the delay. Once the lightning was formed it appeared to be suspended until I gave it direction. Once I had, it struck my target and surely would have destroyed it if there had not been a shield placed on it to ensure its durability. After I apply another shield I will alter one of the variables but not the other. See was sort of impact that has.
Kynier traversed the length of the Training room to the target dummy that his lightning had sent sailing across the room. Initially it did not appear to be damaged or deformed from what had just occurred. Kynier squatted down to lift the training dummy. With some effort and a loud groan of exertion he managed to get it back in an upright position. Then he took a step back and pulled on his personal Djed again to activate his Sight. When his vision was enhanced he could see the condition of the Shield that he had placed. Severely damaged to the point of being completely compromised.
The Shield was tattered and frayed. Even if his next effort were to make contact where there was at least some of the weave left, it would likely do very little good to protect the combat dummy. Kynier walked around it and started pushing it back to where it had been located previously. The base scrapped across the floor in a way that made the hairs on his body stand on end. Once there, he relaxed his body to renter a state of meditation.
While still fueling his Sight with Djed, Kynier closed his eyes. Strangely, the active flow of Djed through his body was not as distracting as he would have anticipated. He focused on the warming sensation his body experienced from using magic. When his thoughts were clear he tapped into that flow to create another weave. Opening his eyes he used his Sight to aid him in his effort to create the weave. This time, Kynier folded it on itself to be nearly three times as thick as a standard weave. By the time it was done, he felt right eye begin to twitch.
Closing the flow of his Sight, the enhancement dissipated from his senses. Kynier moved across the room to a position about fifteen paces away. Perhaps the distance would affect the intensity of the lightning strike. Calling upon his Djed again, he took more than normal but not nearly as much as he had the previous attempt. Holding his arms out before him the Djed became res once more. Breath, Ignition! The res sparked with energy as it had the last time and Kynier followed through with the push to send forth the lightning bolt. A brilliant display of a blue so light it was nearly white shot forth. It touched the target exactly where he had been concentrating and caused the new shield to burst into a wide spectrum of colors. The practice dummy again slid across the floor but did not traverse as far.

The change made for the next attempt was a simple reduction of Djed. The near instantaneous transmutation of the two elements appears to be the key factor in generating a para-element. While there was a reduction in personal Djed utilized for Lightning, it was still more than what my other disciplines have ever needed to call upon. The Lightning is able to strike with tremendous power and has been able to physically push my target with relative ease in both instances. Though I don’t intend on encountering any large, dangerous creatures it is safe to say that Lightning will be the first element of choice.
Setting down the quill, Kynier ventured over to the target dummy to examine what damage it may have undergone. While it had not been knocked to the ground it had been pushed back several paces. Circling around it he did not see any scorch marks along the target’s surface. Stopping to stand in front, Kynier called on his Djed to flow into his eyes once more to activate his Sight. As his senses enhanced he could see the condition of the Shield that he had placed on the target. With the increased thickness of the weave, as well as the reduction of power in the Lightning, it had managed to survive the encounter. Although it did look a little worse for wear.
The weave itself appeared charred where the lightning stuck. It was difficult to say, but Kynier estimated that about half of the weave’s thickness had been destroyed. With a deep breath he calmed himself and began repairing the shield. Kynier added more djed to the shield to refill and repair the broken strands. Some of them had to be removed entirely and required replacement. The process was much longer than it would’ve been to make a new shield entirely. It was the first time a shield had been strong enough to require repairs. When it was all done, Kynier’s eyes were beginning to burn and a headache was forming.
His Auristics had been active for much longer than he ever had needed them to be before. Kynier closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose as his Sight was closed. Moving to a position twenty paces away from his practice target he considered what he could try next. There were more experiments he could do with Lightning, though most of them were variations on transmutation intervals and the amount of power harnessed. What he was curious about were the different forms he could make with Lightning. With Fire, it could be compacted into an orb, stretched into a blanket and thrown, or generate a continuous gout of flames. Could the same be done with Lightning?
With a deep exhale Kynier shook out his shoulders. Then he raised his hands so that they were open with the palms facing each other. Clearing his mind, he evoked his Djed into res which began to swirl in the space between his hands. The mage locked his eyes on the target as he filled the space before him with power. Breath, Ignition… Lightning! The air between his hands condensed and danced with small arcs of Lightning. The power was set between his hands and ready to be spent. Kynier took a deep breath as he angled his hands more towards his target. Mentally, he kept the power reigned in to avoid accidentally having it shoot out before he was ready. Then he eased on his control and pushed with his mind, though not half as hard as he had for the two previous occasions.
The dancing storm between his palms lashed at the target dummy once, then twice with electric bolts of pale blue power. It was sporadic at first, so Kynier added more encouragement and that’s when the lightning latched onto the target. It was as though Zulrav had generated a whip out of a storm. The bolt was consistent and burned at the shield that he had placed over his target.

Though it required some considerable Djed to sustain the Lightning leash, the feeling of power at his fingertps was surprising. It generated a bit of euphoria to feel that… Kynier cut the flow of his Djed and pushed out the last of the contained power. The pale blue bolt surged once and caused the target to tilt. When the last of it was spent, the target dummy wobbled on its base. He felt out of breath and sweat was running down behind his ears. At the absence of power at his fingertips Kynier felt a physical craving for more. But he shook his head at himself.
It was a sign of overgiving, one of the more dangerous ones in his opinion. Muscle spasms and pain were easily noticed and could distract him from his hold over his personal supply of Djed. Where as euphoria made him feel inclined to keep spending his magic in greater quantities. Kynier went to the base of the stairs and grabbed his waterskin. The cool liquid running down his throat parched the thirst he had not even realized was developing. After a couple of drinks, Kynier started making his journal entries on the experience. First he started with how the repairs on the Shield had gone.
A shield that is generated at three times the thickness of my standard weave had managed to endure a blast of reasonably powerful reimancy. Though it was clear that a second application would have torn the shield asunder and cause severe harm to what the Shield had been protecting. I made my first attempt at repairing the Shield rather than generating a new one. In regards to time, it was far less efficient. Having to refill, remove, and replace many strands of a Shield was a slow process. Yet, as my other disciplines increase, so too shall my Shields. In time, they could be able to endure any Reimancy usage and require less time to repair.
Then Kynier turned over to his other journal.
Lightning should be used sparingly. The last experiment was to determine if it was possible to generate a steady flow of arching lightning rather than an instantaneous bolt. The answer is yes, it is possible. It is not recommended thought. In a short matter of time I began to experience euphoria, an early sign of Overgiving. I am tempted to try one more experiment. This one will be to see how little Djed is needed to produce a bolt of the para-element. The results are expected to be lack-luster.
Kynier stood up straight and stretched his back. This would be the last one for the day. Kynier Went over and examined his Shield without the use of Auristics. His hand hovered over the wooden surface of the combat dummy, feeling for the Djed that was still present. It was weak and difficult to notice. Kynier focused on his power and willed it into the weave to strengthen it. It was not an effort to repair the strands or fill the gaps. Just merely strengthening what was left.
When that was done, Kyneir took a place only ten paces away from the target. Sitting down on the hard ground, Kynier crossed his legs and closed his eyes. Meditation was an excellent tool to suspend the onset of overgiving. Since he was already at the threshold, Kynier indulged in the practice for even longer than he normally would have. Kynier focused on his breathing and counted his breaths. Each time he was able to count to ten breaths without distraction, he would restart and count to ten breaths again. If he got distracted, he restarted again. The number of breaths taken and released was impossible to say, for it was difficult to be able to reach seven or eight without distraction.
Once his mind was calm enough to reach a count of ten twice in succession, Kynier reached inward for one last bit of power. Unlike the other castings of lightning, he took an amount equal to what he’d need for just Fire or Just air. Holding his hand up before him, palm facing the ceiling, liquid res generated on his palm. Kynier turned his intention on it as his hand twisted around to face the target. Lightning! At full extension, a blue bolt shot forth and hit the target. It was over in an instant and the target had only bobbled in place for a tick. Kynier smiled as his arm began to cramp up on him. He stood up and added only a single line to his reimancy journal.
Less than expected is what is needed.
