Time was a fickle thing, and time for Zuhre was no different. The sky was still dark when she woke, the room long since lost its warmth from the previous evening. But she was not cold. Even without clothes to cover her body, she was not cold. She stared up at the ceiling, a pulsing sensation evoking pain in her temples. She went to press on the pain to see if it would stop but her fingers were halted by the dense, thick protrusions that sprouted from out of them. She delicately placed her finger tips against the side of one of her horns, sliding them upwards and around, as her movement made a sort of circle until they reached the very top at a dull point.

Zuhre closed her eyes and pictured what her horns must look like, for she owned no mirror. She could see the gloss that coated over top the pastel yellow. She could also see a mental image of what her hair must look like as well: silky, mute gold with amber hues- mute, like the room she was in. It was so silent the sound of a feather falling to the floor could be heard. It felt eerie. It felt cold. Like the room. Cold and empty and quiet. Zuhre felt lonely. She shivered, but she was not cold. No, it was a shiver from the chill that ran throughout her body; it felt like ice rather than blood was pumping through her system.

She sat up, glancing down at her flawless skin. The moon cast its rays through the window, causing her skin to shimmer, even sparkle. She started at her toes and drew her gaze upwards, taking in the appearance of her celestial form. Her scan was quickly hindered as she glared at the only imperfection. Her knee bore a thick scar spreading from the top of her shin up towards the right below her thigh, marring her knee cap with an ugly, glistening line.

She sucked in some air, and placed her fingers around the scar. Her knee still hurt. Even though her wound had mostly healed from having acquired an injury back during the beginning of autumn, it still hurt.

She tried to find the location where the pain radiated the most. She pressed firmly, moving her finger slightly in all different directions until she could find something. There, positioned slightly to the inside of the knee cap was a thick band that stretched in a vertical alignment down her leg. She could feel it move side to side under the pressure of her fingers. While not the area that smarted the most, she could feel the tension. How? She pushed against the mass gently until she couldn’t push much further. Then, using her first two fingers, she started to move them in a circular fashion. Once she had finished, it wasn’t as tender as it once had been.

Now her neck was another beast entirely. There were cinks and knots and a whole assemblage of sore areas. Had she slept on it wrong or was it brought on by this increasing headache?

She swung her legs so that they hung off the side of her bed. Gradually, she applied pressure to her feet as she stood up on wobbly legs. Why was she feeling this way? She grasp the back of the chair that sat in front of the hearth. Steadying herself, she walked over to where her backpack sat against the wall. She crouched down in front of it, sticking her hand in the open pouch. She withdrew her notebook and a stick of charcoal. Before she got too involved in doing anything, she decided that now would be a good time to try to make herself at home.

She had struggle with the idea for days now. Autumn was almost over after all, and she had been here from its start. The Ethaefal had always felt like she didn’t belong, that staying here was just temporary, a bump in her journey that she would quickly find a way around. But perhaps she was in no shape to be on the move. Not just in the physical sense, but also in the mental and emotional sense too. She was so very new to everything- her situation, her environment, her life. She was like a newborn baby, without a clue as to how anything worked, though she did have some experience, for she had had a previous life.

She had been someone. Before and after. She was quite content in the hands of Leth, but more in the phantasmal sense, not the literal sense. Everything was perfect up there in the clouds, in that alternate realm with other celestial beings. Now, Leth had quite literally take her into his hands and cast her out. It was him who did it, was it not? He was the one who removed her from her sanctuary? While it felt like punishment to her, she couldn’t help but allow herself to think that there was something else, something deeper, something she didn’t understand- perhaps the reason as to why he did it.

She began to remove the contents of her backpack, one by one. As she was doing this, she counted how many items she owned. “One, two, three…” she murmured aloud as she took out a comb, a brush, a knife meant for eating. As she counted, she made a mental list of her inventory. She had a waterskin, unfortunately void of water, for she had drank most of it during the beginning of the season and had never gotten around to refilling it. She also had her flint and her steel. She noted this, among everything else she pulled from out of her backpack, until everything was laid out in front of her.

She started to move things around, organizing them by function, and by necessity. She started with her more personal items like her comb and her brush. She set those to the left most side of her. She pulled out a bar of soap as well and determined it to be something of hygiene. To the left she put it, amongst the other items of similar purpose. The waterskin she categorized as something essential, as it usually contained water, something she would need soon as she shifted from her ethereal form to her earthbound form. She placed the waterskin next to the eating knife to her right, denoting both as tools meant for survival.

Once she had organized her possessions, she picked her journal and charcoal back up. She would deal with actually putting these items away when the sun occupying the sky. For now, however, she hoped that getting some of her thoughts out of her head and onto paper would help diminish the severity of her headache.

Exploring New Areas

She brought her hands up to her head, gracefully finding a spot right under where her horns connected to her temples. She pressed lightly against her skin, and with every press she moved her fingers.

Press, press, oh!

Zuhre almost cried out at the unexpected pain. She found her head almost hurting worse after she had found the area that was most tender. Perhaps this was the origin of the headache, she mused, setting about to start massaging the soft spot where fibrous protein grew.

Her nails were filed down from being bitten all too often, so they didn’t pose a threat at scratching her. She used one finger this time, for fear that using two like on her knee, would cause more negative effects than positive ones. Tentatively, she drew her finger across the problematic area, pulling her skin as she did. She knew not if she was working on muscle, fat, or solely just tissue, but by her pulling action, she felt some alleviation.

In no way had the pain subsided, but as she continuously drew her finger in a straight line across her temple, she felt relief. In connection with that, she also felt distraction. She was plenty concentrated on the movement of her fingers so as to experience the least pain as she pressed them into her skin, that subconsciously the pain had begun to dull.

Her notebook still lay out in front of her, open and turned to an empty page. Zuhre tilted her head to the side, receiving a glorious crack in response before looking down at her journal. It was funny, she thought. This page was blank, empty, without the company of words, much like how the Ethaefal felt at that particular point in time.

She felt lonely above all else, but she also felt something else lingering in the back of her mind. Something that left a bitter taste in her mouth. She felt like she had no purpose. Why had she been sent here? What was she doing here? What was anyone doing on this forsaken earth? People distrusted others, enslaved others, killed others; there was so much hate in the world and for what? Why had everyone not been wiped out yet by their own malevolent hands?

Zuhre grew uneasy as she continued to stare at the clean page. The blankness was what was making her unease more than her own mind was. She needed to fix that. She sought to foil the purity of the paper, taking her stick of charcoal and running a thick streak down the middle of the page. The line ended before it reached the top, giving Zuhre a brilliant idea.

She observed the streak, how it seemed to break the paper into two segments, two halves. Just like her. She had two sides to her, her Svefran earthly being and her otherworldly and divine seeming. Somehow they were connected, though the reason as to why and how was still foggy in her brain.

She aimed to make the thick slash in the page beautiful, like the two sides of herself. At the top of the line where it did not quite touch the edge of the paper, she created a triangle, only that the bottom of the triangle remained open. She took both sides of the triangle and extended there lines so that they made a sort of arc, encompassing the streak that ran down the middle of the paper. At the bottom of the page, she connected them so that she had formed some version of an oval. She picked a point on the thick line and drew another line coming from out of it. After having done this, she repeated her process until there were several lines all resembling extensions of the first initial line. She had only had a short glimpse at what a leaf looked like, but she figured her drawing was a close approximation of its appearance.

She nodded her head and inhaled the stale air.

“The leaf is a part of a tree that always changes,” she said to herself, allowing a small smile to cross her lips. “The leaf changes colours, it has multiple forms, they fall, and they grow. And as much as the tree seems to lose them, they always somehow reappear attached firmly to its branches.”

To the side of her drawing, she wrote the word leaf, though her art needn’t a label. She wrote in tall capital letters, making the letter L stand out so that it was obvious it was the beginning of the word. Underneath the word, she scrawled in a smaller font, to change.

“People are always changing; it is how we grow. We may not like parts of ourselves, but if they are so inherent to our design, it’s almost impossible to get rid of them, as they will always come back. Like leaves from a tree.”

Did people always go through the exact same changes like leaves did every season? Every season they changed colours, the exact same colours, and fell, though not always in the exact same way. Was it insanity trying to do something time and time again, expecting different results, but receiving the same ones? Is that not what leaves did? Maybe the focus of the leaves changing and falling, but the journey they take when they do.

Zuhre subconsciously started shading in a corner of her drawing. “I believe people are less like clockwork and more like clay. They don’t fit into place like cogs and wheels, they mould while still retaining their original structure.” Was she like clay? Was she moulding into this current civilization after falling? She was still herself, she still had a piece of herself that allowed her to remember her celestial counterparts, but her earthbound form was her moulding, her way of fitting in to the physical realm. She was like clay. She was like a leaf, continuously changing, but within a set limitation.

“You can only change yourself so much before you are no longer changing yourself but the person you’ve changed yourself into.”

Exploring New Areas

Zuhre stared down at the black lines that covered the paper in her notebook. As she stared, her vision began to blur from a build up of tears. A single droplet fell down her face and landed on the page, smearing her drawing.

She picked up her stick of charcoal, noticing now how small it had gotten from its constant use. She redrew over the lines that had smeared. Sighing, she turned the paper to the next clean page. Everyone could use a clean slate; a second chance. Even her.

“Did you give me a second chance, then?” she asked the ceiling, hoping her message could penetrate through to Leth. “If you can hear me, Leth,” she prayed, throwing her head back and raising her chin to the sky. “I don’t doubt you.” And she didn’t. She knew everything was meant exactly how it was, even if it wasn't in her favour. While she did have feelings about this, she knew that sometimes life was out of her control. What she thought was “bad” may not be bad absolutely. She didn’t know everything, but she did know that she didn’t know everything, and that was a start to something good.

She rose from her seated position on the floor, stretching her feet so she stood on the tips of her toes. She stretched her arms above her, as though reaching for the moon, or perhaps Leth himself. She wondered what she looked like to her. She wondered if he saw someone strong and confident, or just someone who was lost and insignificant as many gods do. She pondered whether he even really cared, that maybe he wasn’t listening to her when she spoke to him. But she couldn’t think that way. She couldn’t make decisions based off an irrational mind that had no evidence.

But as she looked down at her naked body, she wondered what she saw; not just as a vessel, but as a soul. What did she see in herself?

She allowed her fingers to rest on the tops of her bosoms, letting them move down her chest, over her rib cage and across her belly button. As her fingers stroked her body, the moon began to descend from the sky and was replaced by a large orb of light. Such as the astronomical objects in the sky, Zuhre too changed.

The pearly iridescence of her skin dimmed, shifting into something more pale and less smooth. Out of the corner of her eye, a lock of her golden hair changed, replaced with a thick, ratty dread of platinum blonde. She looked down at her knee and saw the scar hadn’t changed much if at all, but wondered if she could do something about it.

She reached down to her knee and placed her fingers onto the thick and shiny scar. She felt how smooth it was, such a contrast to the surrounding tissue. It made her shiver. It wasn’t entirely healed, but a faint redness shadowed the edges. Within a blink, the redness turned into a soft rose, having aged her wound a day. She wished she could reach through her flesh, to the inside of her body and touch the areas that ached.

As the sun continued to rise, Zuhre began to dress herself. She slipped on her shirt and her pants, before using her own hair to make a tie to keep her dreadlocks from falling into her face. Being an Ethaefal, she didn’t need breakfast, though terms like these weren't familiar to her. She didn’t believe in set times of the day, just that at one point Leth reigns and then at another Syna does.

Zuhre flopped onto her bunk with her book and writing utensil in hand.

Syna’s touch
Like streaks of beryl stone
Kiss and caress
Leaving remnants
Such as the taste of honey on the tongue

Leth’s embrace
Like a dream come true
Cradle and
Allowing thoughts
And feelings of belonging.

With a flourish of her hand, she ended her prose with a full stop, closing her notebook and setting her charcoal down bedside. She thought to herself then how good company would feel.

Much like Syna’s kisses and Leth’s embrace.
