There were a lot of things that were difficult to understand or appreciate without some guidance to show the way. A few of the disciplines of magic were like that. The rudimentary aspects were very quick to grasp, but the advanced applications could be so creative that most would not consider even attempting them, let alone thinking of them. Reimancy was not one of those disciplines. There were four elements and they could be used in combinations to create para-elements. The uses of them was where the creativity came into play. Glyphing was much more complex. Kynier primarily used three of the five types of runes involved with the discipline, and there were so many combinations that their uses exceeded his comprehension. Voiding and Auristics were both very straight forward in their uses. And Projection seemed even more straight forward than those two.
Kynier was descending the stairs into the training room with a book tucked under his arm. Duncan must have been out performing a delivery or getting supplies, since he was not in the show room. Nor was he in the Training Room utilizing the weights and other equipment. Which was preferable, Kynier was looking to use the space for himself and didn’t enjoy practicing in front of the Isurian, or Lia. Both of them watched with eyes that made him feel uncomfortable even when he wasn’t using the power of his Djed. Exactly how he was going to use the room, he was unsure of.
At the bottom of the stairs, he gave each of the shadows a greeting. They had been increasing in number over the season, and it was becoming difficult to remember all their names. A few of them stood out with their knowledge on certain subjects. Once he was done speaking with Akajia’s children, he settled himself on the bottom stair and opened the book that he had brought down. It was the one that Doler had given him, about Projection. Kynier had already read through the entire section of risks involved with using the discipline. The hazards of paralysis and death. How overgiving was more difficult to achieve since there was relatively little magic involved. Some of the risks he did not understand how they came about, because it described the use of Projection techniques that he was not familiar with yet.
It was exciting to think that there was more to Projection than simply removing a piece of the soul from the body to manipulate the material world. Kynier saw glimpses of terms like “Overbody” and “limb-split” and was curious to learn them. But he did not read too deep into the contents of the book. It was organized well, to reflect a Projectionist’s progression and not introduce concepts they were not prepared for. Kynier was beginning on the section that followed a novice’s capabilities with the discipline.
“Once a Projectionist begins to display some competence with the discipline, they should be capable of expanding their reach to thirty-five feet. More talented individuals have been known to accomplish reaching up to fifty feet away.”
Kynier lifted his eyes from the page. He had not tested how far it is that he was able to reach when using Projection. He set the book down and took out the Might Quill from his dark green vest, as well as a vial of ink. Kynier uncorked the vial and rolled up the sleeve of one arm. Wetting the quill’s tip, he began to leave ink marks on the flesh of his forearm. Runes formed that were not specific words to generate a Path. At the end of the Path he did generate a rune, Pechi. It was to assist in detaching and reattaching his astral limb from his hand. Once he finished Glyphing his forearm, he passed the Might Quill to his other hand and made the same Glyphs on the other arm.
Once that was done, he stood up from the stair and walked over into the furthest corner of the Training Room. Standing there, he employed his Djed to detach both of his astral arms from his physical form. The ink lines of the Paths both radiated a faint red glow as the Djed pushed on his astral being. While it was not a fast process, the Glyphing did make it occur more swiftly without the ripping sensation that irritated the nerves of his body. Kynier looked at the opposite corner of the room and reached out with both of his arms.
Invisible limbs stretched across the room to that opposite corner. When he felt his astral arms no longer stretching without discomfort he stopped. His eyes were unable to see exactly where the incorporeal limbs ended. The mage lowered his hands to feel around for where they had ended. Against his forearm he felt the surface of the stairs when lowering his hands. Fingers rubbed around on the floor and felt no objects within reach. Kynier pulled the limbs back to him and grasped one of the lighter, small, round weights used for body building. Holding it between both astral hands, he stretched out his arms again. The weight drifted across the room until it was not far from the wall, but still short.
The distance was not so great as to be beyond the lower end of what a competent Projectionist was capable of. Kynier took a breath and reached with the weight. Astral arms stretched as he pushed the weight further. The elastic sensation of his astral form was unnerving when expanding his limitations. After several moments, the weight connected with the opposite corner of the room. Kynier pushed more to stretch out the other sections of his astral form. Then, he counted to thirty breaths before shrinking his reach and bringing the weight back to corporeal arm’s reach.
