To begin to destroy

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on February 3rd, 2019, 6:20 pm

71 Winter 518

The day before, Crylon had set out from the Gem and spent some time exploring and familiarizing himself with the Seaside Market. Today he intended to actually go there to buy some things, namely the basic equipment that would be needed to clear the land near the Gem.

It would be a long task, and require numerous hands working, but it could be done. But first he needed to be able to equip those hands with the needed things, or else they would not be able to safely do so.

Arriving at the market, Crylon began to explore. He had not brought too much money, 50 gold mizas only. Enough, he felt, to get the basic supplies he needed, and not much more. Any more, and he felt he would call too much attention to himself and be asking to be robbed.

He needed tools for breaking down the structure, for clearing the land, and he supposed for digging when it got to that point. Gloves and coverings, thick leather if possible, to protect hands at work. Gazing about he hoped for some signs, but recalled from the day before there was no such luck. It seemed to be a mess of stands, some barely standing. There was also no order to things, fish merchants next to jewelry, a man selling armor next to fruit...

Someone selling poison next to someone selling bottles of some sort of "healing" tincture promised to bring vitality and long life... Which looked oddly similar the poison seller from next doors wares.

Crylon realized there was nothing to it but to wander about, hoping to find what he needed.

It was when he saw a table covered in leather goods that he knew he had found the first of his supplies. Gloves, packs, purses... The last looked somewhat worse for wear, with a tear down one side and a strap broken, as if ripped off someone's arms.

Stopping there, he peered down at the wares, the human behind it perking up at seeing someone interested. His eyes paused for a moment on his left arm, before a fake smile crossed it.

"Ah, hello, good sir! I see you have in your wisdom decided to inspect Waze's fine wares. Never will you see better! What are you looking for?"

A frown on his face, Crylon paused for a moment, letting a gentle finger poke at the torn purse.

“Is all damage this? Want good made, not fall part.”

For a moment the man's fake smile flickered, before he shook his head. He quickly snapped a hand forward, grabbing the damaged purse and tossing it behind him.

"Ah, now don't be like that. I assure you, my stuff is good stuff! That one just fell off a cart, not sure where it came from, but I promise the rest is all of the finest quality! Now, what are you needing?"

Pondering for a moment Crylon grew silent, before after a pause responding.

“Need gloves. Leather, thick, strong, keep hands safe. Some for adults, some smaller, for children. Couple pairs each. ?”

"Ah, of course, got that right here. That'll be... A gold miza a pair for the kids gloves, and two for the adult's each."

Sensing the man was trying to test him, or more to the point swindle him, Crylon considered the price for a moment. Then he took half of it, and returned an offer.

“Will pay that much, but for two pairs each. Two pairs child, 1 gold miza, 2 pairs adult, 2 gold mizas. That 2 pair, 4 gloves, 2 each hand. Will buy... Six, seven, of each, small child, adult, if have of good quality.”

Holding his hand to his heart, the man shook his head. "Why, you sir think to swindle me! That much a pair! Ah, I will do it, but only because you are such a good customer, and buying so many pairs. And if you've got full payment up front."

Crylon paused for a few moments, letting his pause hold weight, throwing his weight about in the negotiation as best he could. The man appeared affronted, as if he was losing out, but he also seemed quick to agree to Crylon's terms... Which made him think they were not such bad terms.

“Yes, but after inspect wares for good, and pick out ones want. Only quality.”

The man calling himself Waza nodded, gesturing for Crylon to proceed. He quickly picked through the items, till he found what he needed, and in good quality and repair. Not falling apart, with thin bits, or missing holes in the leather. Not cracked, or other such damage visible. Seems still tight, and no stitches missing. With his relatively limited knowledge of gloves, it was the best he could do, but he was fairly certain he had found the best or at least all decent items.

He was left with six pairs of children's leather gloves, 5 sm each or two for 1 gm... Which totaled 3 gm. He found seven decent pairs of the adult gloves, totaling 1 gm each, for 7 gm total. All together, it was 10 gm, which would be reimbursed by Kelski once he got back to the Gem.

"Ah, would you need something to carry all that in? Surely your going to be buying other things today, and will need a pack to keep your hands free? Only 2 gold mizas more."

With a frown Crylon paused again, before admitting that his tactic had worked. He had forgotten to bring a pack or something to carry it all, left it at home, and would need something to carry it once he got the other equipment.

Searching through the packs laid out, mostly on the ground behind the table, he found the one that looked of the best make, and of the finest quality, and nodded at it.

“Fine. 2 gold mizas. Will take that one.”

With that Crylon began to take out the money to pay for the goods, and began picking up and piling his newly acquired equipment.

Waze paused, looking for a moment at the pack Crylon had picked. He stared at it for a moment, as if he had not seen it before and was considering not selling it, but then he saw the money coming out, and picking up the pack and feeling its heft to make sure it was empty, passed it across to Crylon. Crylon opened the pack on the top, dropped the gloves in which even added together did not seem to add any weight to the pack, and then putting it on his back headed off in search of the other tools he would need.

To begin to destroy

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on February 3rd, 2019, 8:48 pm

Continuing to wander about, Crylon spent some time perusing wares, until finally after another half bell he found what he was looking for. All manner of tools and equipment, including what he thought he would need.

He saw shovels, picks, stone axes, hammers, heavy and smaller sledges. Rope, jars full of some odd powder he did not recognize, and many other things. The man behind the table which was laden with cheaper wares had both arms bare. Bare but not blank, as they were covered in scars and burns and the marks of a man who had lived through quite a few tussles. Clearly something he was trying to convey.

If that was not enough, then the two men standing on opposite sides of his table did so. One was a human with iron studded gloves on and a pair of axes across his back. The other was a tall red hued fellow with a pair of curved daggers on each hip, and a spear on his back held on with a simple clip attaching it to a harness.

As Crylon walked up the grizzled man eyed him from toes to eyes in one sweeping glance, seeming to take in every inch of him at once.

He spit, a ring echoing as it struck a pot near his feet, and simply said "You buying?"

Crylon nodded, taking a moment to consider what he would need that the man had. Not everything, as they were not planning a full mining operation or tearing down a castle as this man seemed prepared for... But a few things.

“Large sledge for smashing, three, maybe four. Shovels. Three. Some picks for break stone. Two. And have rope? Maybe hundred feet?”

The man, clearly considering and calculating in his head, weighing options and staring Crylon in the eyes, paused for what seemed a single tick. Then he let out a whistle.

"Peve! Get the stuff. Sledgehammers. One each. Four total. Shovels, 2 each, 3 o em. Picks for stone breaking. 3 each. Two. Hunerd feet rope. 2 total. Fiffy wraps. And ged a ladder o rope, good ol' thurty footer. Nudder 2 for it. Make twenty. Pay up front, then you get stuff."

Crylon paused, considering arguing with the man, questioning the prices... But he did not seem to leave any room for negotiating, was much more sure of himself than the last man. He also considered asking about the rope ladder, but now that he had added it on for Crylon, he saw that if he had considered it he would have likely asked for one as well.

Quietly Crylon dropped the coins on the table, and the child he had mentioned came running up with the items in lots and dropped them at Crylon's feet. As each set of items was dropped he looked them over, checking for imperfections. But while none looked freshly made, they were all it seemed in decent repair and usage. Not falling apart, broken, or otherwise damaged.

He quickly picked up the first lot of 50 feet of rope, along with the rope ladder, and pushed it into his pack before returning it to its place.

The rest were in a big pile, tied together in a heap using the second set of rope, the excess bundled to the side as a sort of handhold. Clearly this child knew his stuff, and how to pack and prepare stuff. Within moments he was gone, vanished behind the table.

With a grunt he heaved the bundle over his left shoulder, grabbing at the cluster of rope with his hand. The pile made him a bit lopsided, but... But he thought he could make it back.

He was about fifty feet away, out of sight of the man and in front of some new tables, when he considered trying to tie some of the stuff onto his pack. He did after all have the other length of rope. But it was then, as he set down the tools and began to move the pack on his back, that he noticed... Something odd.

He felt as if the pack weighed no more than when he had first gotten it. And yet with the gloves and rope, it should have had some weight... A hole perhaps?

He checked the bottom, but it seemed intact. Lifting the flap he reached inside, expecting to find the rope he had dropped on top. But instead his hand came out with... A pair of gloves? Dropping the pack fully, he checked about and then opened the top to find... Nothing.

But he reached inside, this time feeling about for the rope, his hand came out holding one end of the looped and tied up length of rope. He could feel the weight of the rope, and yet... When he then dropped it back in the pack, he felt no new weight when he picked up the pack.

His mind turning backward, he considered of all things the muffin tin he had found... Which seemed to magically fill with a new muffin. This perhaps was another such magic item which had found its way into his path?

It was weightless or in truth the normal weight of an empty pack, and yet in the inverse of the tin he could drop things in it and not increase the weight.

Grabbing the sledges and carefully taking them from the pile, he carefully slotted them into the mouth of the pack one at a time. Each vanished, fitting through the mouth of the pack even though they should have been too long to fit.

The shovels likewise fitted, though required some maneuvering and pulling on the pack.

He did not even try the picks, closing the pack again and adding its lightness to his back, and then picking up his new burden of a pair of picks and a length of loose rope about it.

Pulling it tight, Crylon headed off in silence, keeping calm and not wanting to reveal to anyone he had done anything out of the ordinary or in any way magical.

To begin to destroy

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on February 3rd, 2019, 9:30 pm

After acquiring the needed supplies and equipment, Crylon quickly headed back to the Gem. He dropped off everything he had picked up, pulling it all out one by one from the “empty” pack. He was left with a considerable pile of goods.

Dropping the pack off in his room for further inspection later, now truly empty, Crylon grabbed a single right glove for his normal hand, took a sledgehammer, and headed back outside and across to the lot where the building was to be taken down.

Coming closer, he could see it was not in truth too strong of a building. Mostly bits of odd material attached together by whatever means. If there had been an original structure, so much of it had been replaced a piece at a time that he could not determine what that original building had been.

Even with all his knowledge of buildings and there designs, minor in truth compared to some, he could not make heads or tails of what the intent had been of those last to use it nor what had started there.

Like someone had taken an axe, which had then been broken. The head had in turn been replaced rather than repaired, but with a poorly made one. And likewise the handle had been broken, and so it had been replaced with a poorer copy and attached to the new head. Leaving one with a new tool altogether, of much poorer make than the original. But at least in that case still recognizable as an axe...

Inspecting the structure, he realized care would need to be taken that in taking it down nothing would fall on himself or anyone. The roof, or what was left of it, would also need to be minded.

He decided to start simply by taking down the door, deconstructing the structure one bit at a time. Though he felt, taking something apart, he could see in doing so how not to do things, or where to make something strong or solid to stop other forces from doing the same.

Taking the sledgehammer in a two handed grip, he headed to the door and considered it for a few moments. With a heavy swing he angled the blow at the bottom hinge, which was barely holding on. One good blow, and the setting came undone. With another over headed strike of the hammer he hit the top hinge of rusted iron. He saw a shudder, but the door did not move.

Moving forward and taking his left hand off the hammer he tapped the door. It shuddered, began to tilt, and then all of a sudden began to fall towards him.

By instinct he punched out with his left freed hand, but the wood was so rotten it punched right through the door leaving his arm stuck up the the elbow inside of it. But it did manage to keep the door from falling on him.

Flexing his arm and pulling to the side he threw the door, or tried to. A chunk instead broke off, whch did manage to free his arm along with sending a crack splintering through the door. The top half above where his arm had entered was flung spinning to the side. The bottom half simply fell, forcing him to jump backward to keep his toes from being crushed.

Progress, if only by inches.

To begin to destroy

Having taken down the door, Crylon considered what to do next. He could try and knock down the roof and walls bit by bit, but that seemed inefficient.

Instead he considered what a building was. Walls. Floor. Ceiling. Roof. Held up by what was below. If he could take out what held it up, then surely he could take the building down much more easily than knocking a hundred holes in it till it all collapsed.

Heading inside, he carefully inspected the walls and roof. He could see in one corner a hole, slowly spreading and sinking in. If not dealt with, the ceiling likely would have caved in of its own accord eventually. Another wall was not even connected to the roof except by one small bit near the middle, the other sides for the most part supporting it alone. But if that one bit should collapse, much of the ceiling on that side would sag in and perhaps collapse. Heading to the wall below this last bit, he slowly paced along. Each step he would lightly tap with the hammers head, feeling and listening for something different.

Near the middle, he finally found it. A main support beam, not just planks of wood cross over the wall, but an actual intact structural element. He did not want to however come at it from inside, and risk the roof coming in on him. Instead he paced out his steps from the side wall along the wall, and then headed outside. At that corner he once more paced out steps until he was on the same point in the wall, but on the outside.

Hefting up the hammer with both hands again, feeling the strain of the weight more on his right arm, he took in a deep breath and slammed it into the wall. Again. Once more, until one of the planks snapped and a part fell off revealing the inside of the wall. Again just above, moving to get another plan covering the inside of the wall free. Again in the same spot, once more, and another snapped and freed itself.

Now he could see somewhat inside, and could maneuver his hammer from above and below rather than straight at the side of the planks. Another blow downward, using the weight of the hammer rather than the strength of his arms alone, and he felt the plank below the other two snap with the first blow. Another pause, taking in a deep breath as his lungs raggedly pulled at the air, and another blow downward.

Another plan snapped, though did not fall loose. This required some tugging with his left hand on the rotten splintered wood, and some more two handed strikes with the hammer at either end.

After the fourth plank he had a decent gaping hole in the wall, and could see the beam supporting the roof properly. Using the technique he had found earlier, overhand in an arc using the weight of the hammer rather than his arms strength, he pounded at the pillar of wood. Oddly it seemed intact, unlike the rest of the building. Which explained why that bit of that side of the roof was still intact while the rest had fallen down.

He pounded again, and once more, before he saw a small crack form in the vertical beam. Each hit after that spread the crack, but it did not seem to want to break. Then there was a loud crack, and the splintering wood snapped clean through in one moment.

To begin to destroy

Crylon paused, tensed, at the sound of the wood cracking. Breaking. Giving. Was ready to flee, should the wall and roof and things come crashing down towards him.

And then nothing happened.

A bit thrown off, he was not sure what he had done wrong. Was considering trying again, when he heard something shift, something above him creak and snap and begin to move. This time he did move back, taking a half dozen hurried backpedaled steps. For another few moments nothing happened, and then the post in the wall began to sag, and then splintered again. Slid loose from where it was standing on the part below the split, as the wall and roof above pressed downward.

The wall began to sag, snap, break, at least in the central bit where he had broken the post. Much more clearly though was the effect on the roof, as that last bit on the side caved in, and a good quarter of the remaining roof caved in with it.

At least, such was what he saw when he came back around to the other side and peered in through the door. The rest was still standing, still supported by the rest of the walls, but seemed to be tilting at an angle. And a good chunk had fallen in when he broke off the last bit holding it on that side. The wall still stood, but the roof on that side did not.

First things first, he saw, he needed to take down the roof. Walls were one thing, one danger, but falling roof was much harder to see coming. And if it all came at one, much harder he thought to also avoid. Where one could step backward to escape a falling wall, or door, if the entire roof came down there would be no such succor.

How though could he go about taking out the roof? That seemed to be the next puzzle for deconstructing the building.

In putting the roof up, he supposed, it was supported either by pillars or parts of the wall. This building had no pillars, no beams inside, just the walls itself. Which meant any critical supports holding the wall up, like with the support beam he had taken out on the other wall, would likewise need to be taken out.

Generally, though he could not say for sure, support beams were symmetrical. Spread out, so as to distribute the force. If he could take out the center one for each wall, as he had done before, then perhaps... Perhaps he could weaken it enough to bring the entire roof down. Or perhaps with a few more beams after that.

On the front side of the building now, he headed over to the center, roughly were he had taken out the other beam, and began tapping along with his steps to find the central beam.

Once he found it he began the same process as before, smashing into the wall with the sledgehammer to take out planks one above the other horizontally. Once he had three or four free, he was able to see inside the wall again, and after this could find the beam he had struck on. Then it was just a matter of striking it, again, and again, over and again until he broke it like the first he had taken out.

Unlike the first fall on the back of the building, the rest of the roof supports were not compromised. He hit this wall, again and again inside on the beam, but once he broke it nothing so dramatic as before occurred.

But then, he had been expecting that. He was not trying to take the whole place down just then, only to weaken the parts supporting the roof enough to bring it all in. He was in no rush though. Even if he did not manage it today, he would return again tomorrow, and the day after, till it was all down.

From there he headed around to the other two sides, repeating the same action as before. Pound the wall, until enough pieces of plank were free to leave a hole. Widen the hole, until he found the support beam. Hammer the support beam, until it broke and the wall and roof above it began to bear down on it with increasing pressure it could not support.

By that point, taking out the fourth walls central support beam, he had been at work for bells. He was not sure how long, but the sun was still in the sky. But even his muscles, his body, his endurance as an Isur, had its limits. Were being strained and tested and tested.

His right arm was beginning to ache, a full thrum pulsing through the limb. Each breath was taken as a ragged gasp, as he forced his body to continue.

As he smashed through the last support beam, Crylon took a few paces back and continued to pull in ragged breaths. He needed a break. And searching about for a clear spot on the ground further from the structure, sweeping his feet about to make sure there was nothing imbeded in the ground, Crylon plopped to the ground in a heap.

He laid there for about half a bell, letting his muscles rest, his legs sore and his arm a smolder of strained muscles. Before he had been told that such was the fire of building muscles, that such fire meant when it cooled what was left behind would be that bit stronger. Able to endure more. Strength greater, the same as any workout in a gym with weights and things.

But his body also needed rest, and with a sigh he rose to inspect the building once more. If nothing else his breathing had calmed back to its normal tempo. His arm, still aching, was more of a dull flicker of flame, rather than the roar of strained and pushed muscle and sinew that had composed his arm before.

Besides the one part of the roof he had gotten to cave in, not much had visibly been done besides tearing open some walls on the outside.

But on the inside, he was certain, the structure had been strained. Pushed. Was even now slowly bearing down on the weakened walls from above, which would in time lead to the roof coming in.

Once the others came down, the other support beams, then it would all come crashing down. Then they could fell the walls one by one, and break it up into more chunks to haul away.

For now he needed a drink, a snack, and a good nights rest even if it was still early. Perhaps a few muffins out of his tin, if it meant avoiding the extra exertion of cooking.
