2 Summer 519

Even though Finn figured the watchtowers had flared for summer, the weather was for more comfortable then spring had been, Syna was of course warm in the sky as she beat down on his bare bronzed shoulders and a slight cool breeze cooled him and the beaches nicely. The Suvan’s blue brilliance mirrored in the young Svefra’s eyes as he scanned the bay and watched the white caps that broke into a gentle rhythm that lulled him into an easy contentment as he strode slowly out the dock, his feet scorching from the boards warmed in the heat of the day. He sat on the end of the dock while his let his legs dangle into the warm sea water below him, he stretched himself out as he comfortably laid back onto the dock.

He closed his eyes and relaxed in the sunshine as the boards slowly cooled beneath him, the sound and smell of the sea calmed him as he took several deep breaths to clear his mind. His feet and calves were in the water as the bottom of his pants dipped in as well, he let his feet drift and sway as the waves pushed them up and down gently. He forced the few sounds coming from the commons out of the way as he relaxed by himself and started to focus on Oceanus on his shoulder. He could feel the mark slowly churn on his shoulder and increasingly so as soon as his feet touched the sea as if activated by the salt water somehow. He could sense the sea all around him even though his eyes were still closed as the ocean came alive inside his head.

He tried to block everything out of his mind as he concentrated on the sea that enveloped his senses. He opened himself up ever so slowly to his surroundings as he attempted to limit his sense to as small an area as he could. The sensations flooded his mind quickly as he fought the urge to open himself up and let it completely overwhelm him, he could ‘see’ the minnows below himself as they swam in the safety of the shallows. The limitation that he set for himself was entirely missed as his sense ran halfway to the island but it didn’t entirely overwhelm him either as he slowly became accustomed to his feeling. Chimes passed before he slowly allowed his boundary to ease out further until he could see what felt like half of the bay regardless of what it actually was. He laid there and sorted it all out in his mind and comfort, he thanked Laviku for the gift that he had bestowed on him many years ago.

He tried to keep his sense limited to keep control of it, while he sorted it all in his mind. Schools of small fish darted about the bay along with some slightly larger sea bass. It didn’t take long to find something new for Syka which peaked his interest immediately, not to mention that it made his stomach growl loudly. He focused heavily on the crustaceans that seemed to litter the sea floor before he let the sense expand further and further away from the dock. The expansion brought more and more of the crustaceans into his view, without a second thought about it he decided the abundance of lobsters in the area was something he would have thin out a little to the benefit of all Syka he hoped.

He drew his legs up onto the dock and pushed himself up with a bound while he turned toward the mercantile. His bare wet feet padded loudly down the dock as he broke into a run on the warm sand. Thoughts raced faster than his feet as he covered the beach, he took the stairs up to the mercantile two at a time as he rushed inside to stumble over the merchandise just inside the door. He stopped just inside and let his eyes adjust to the slightly darker room.

“Careful up there now! Don’t go breaking things!” a man scolded him from somewhere in the back of the store.

“Excuse me Captain Chaliva, just need to let my head catch up to my feet I think.” Finn apologized as his eyes quickly adjusted to the shaded store. “Just need a few quick things and I’ll be out of your hair.” He quickly strolled through the mercantile, he grabbed various pails, a small assortment of weaved baskets, and a couple of other items with only the quickest of inspections. He stowed them in one another as he made his way to the counter as James tallied up his purchase.

“What you have planned for all these, Finn?”

“Just need a few things to have around the Casinor and can use some for fishing too, especially for fishing!” He answered absently but kept his plan for the day secret until it hopefully worked out although he counted out the mizas to pay for the items. He knew that half of his pile of items was an impulse buy right then but he was truly fine with that because he would need them eventually.

James returned a few mizas to him as change. “Anything else for you today…...Be careful then.” as he could tell Finn was already on his way out again and lost in his own thoughts and plan for the day again.

Finn remembered his manners just as he headed for the stairs, he hurriedly looked back at James “Thanks for the help” and although he did actually mean what he said but was too much in a hurry to be much politer.

In the back of the store, James shook his head in surprise at the young Svefra’s hurry especially in the heat of the day like it was. James stated quietly with a slight hint of annoyance “You should know by now that there is no need to be in that kind of hurry around here.”

Finn made his way down the stairs, turned towards his casinor with his armful of supplies as he continued on his own way down the short stretch of beach . He lugged his newly bought gear out the dock and onto his ship where he set the largest basket and the bag he bought onto the back edge of the ship before he piled the rest up near the cabin door so he could put them away later when it was more convenient.

Finn’s pant legs were almost dry again already, he hated wearing wet clothes so it didn’t take long for him to remove his trousers so he wouldn’t have to wait for them to dry once he was done. He tossed the trousers over the rail of his ship before he took the largest basket and the new bag with him out onto the end of the dock. He set the large basket at the very end of the dock where he could grab it from the water if he needed it before he took a deep breath and quickly dove into the sea with the bag still in his hand.

With an energetic push of his feet, he raised his arms above his head as he sailed over the end of the dock. Regardless of his enthusiasm, he ended up hitting the water with a big splash but still painfully flat and a red stinging chest for some chimes. An experience that he didn’t want to repeat again anytime soon at all as his sun warmed body was instantly cooled by the sea water. The cool feeling lasted only for a few ticks, his body adjusted quickly as he trod water where he landed and the stinging pain subsided easily but definitely a bit longer.

He pointed himself along the shore as he slowly paddled his arms and legs beneath him as he headed for the shallower water. He concentrated on the nearest lobsters again as he carefeully allowed his gnosis to find out that they were all around the bay still as he angled toward a close concentration of the creatures. It took him a few chimes to slowly swim over but this bunch were way too deep for him to dive yet so he continued onto the next nearest cluster and one that should be a bit closer to shore and he hoped shallow for diving. Fishing was never completely easy, it always had to have obstacles to overcome and this seemed to be his for the day.

Finn slowly paddled himself onward as he made his way onward as he watched the sea floor creep up to meet him. Occasional boulders jutted out of the fine sand below him, as he envisioned the lobsters hiding underneath every overhang and wishing he could pluck them up quickly and easily. Several chimes later he finally comes upon a large formation of rocks that looked only slightly deeper than his own height but it seemed to be alive with assorted sea life.

Even from the surface, he could see bright sand on the floor, the growth on the rocks below, even the multitudes of colorful fish that swam around the outcroppings below him. Syna shone down and reflected through the clear blue water, disturbed only by the wind blowing across the surface and his own movements. He floated as best as he could as he caught his breath, when he realized how close shore actually was and how short of a distance he had truly covered while he swam. He was quite disappointed with himself, he felt a Svefra should be much more accomplished of a swimmer than he proved to be just now.

Tails and claws

Finn turned and dove down toward the outcropping below him, he leveled out a couple feet below the surface and opened his eyes to get they layout of the area. The salt in the water burned intensely as the eyes tried to adjust to it only lasted a chime or three before it started to subside into only a slight discomfort. He surfaced again as he ran out of air, he took several breaths before he dove down a second time.

He could see several large outcroppings worn down by the assault of the sea for who knows how long over history. Several overhangs littered under and around the area, he could see the large rusty red color of his prey from where he swam, their meter long thin antennae waved as the currents moved and shifted with the tides. The deep reds and browns of the armored spiney bodies offset nicely against the much lighter sands around it, but without the large claws that many varieties have for defense made these creatures a much easier target for him. The many legs held the creatures up as they moved around below or sat in their burrows and waited quietly for some unknown circumstances. He picked a lobster that was alone and in the open to be his first catch as he surfaced again for a couple of quick breaths.

This time when he dived, he dove straight down to the sandy bottom near the intended crustacean. Finn’s movement was far too close to the creature and far more careless, he hit the seabed which caused a small cloud of sand to drift up and away but disturbed his prey as well. The lobster scurried away in its own cloud of sand as it took off. A surprisingly large area around him was hidden behind the sand cloud, making any attempts to catch it futile until it area settled down again and he knew it. With a reverse of his direction, he shoved his bare feet into the sand and propelled himself toward the surface where he gasped air quickly and steadily for almost a chime.

On the dive down this time, he found an unsuspecting lobster near and headed for it, this time he came in slower and he started further away. Without generating the sand cloud, he slowly comes up near it with an outstretched arm that waited to grab. Finn was quick however the creature was even quicker than he was as it took off as well, out of breath he clawed his way to the surface where he gasped for air yet again.

After several breaths again, he dove toward the pile but didn’t make it half way down before he was forced to the surface gasping for air, his lungs and muscles felt heavy from the exertion. He struggled for air as he made his way towards shore until he could stand up properly without having to swim, he stood there for several chimes as he caught his breath, regained his strength, and his composure. He waited far longer than just feeling better, he waited until blood stopped pounding in his ears and until his breathing returned to normal completely before he paddled back out for his fishing.
