Another day, another opportunity to continue making this map of his. Wearing his full set of armor which covered his head to toe, Vasin felt a bit confident. It consisted of Studded Leather Armor, Chain Shirt, and a Gambeson (Padded Armor). All of which was layered over one another. He also had over his head a nasal helmet with a draping aventail. His arms covered in splint vambraces and legs protected by splint greaves. Thick leather gauntlets protected his hands as a coif protected his hair from being tangled in the chain, as well as from blunt blows. On his backrest, a large wooden shield, at his hip was a scabbard which held his cold iron long sword. To the other side was, of course, his throwing ax, which he did not have the faintest idea of how to throw yet. Indeed, when he had purchased that throwing ax with the larger one he did so know he would need to learn how to use both. They were certainly not swords, and he was no master with that yet. Vasin would come to a stop, his chain armor having made little sound with each step.

Vasin finished counting his steps, having walked the east side of the park. Standing there he added up the paces in his head and decided that instead of getting himself wet and crossing to continue counting, he would just multiply it by two. Counting the numbers on his fingers he came to a rough estimate of how large in diameter the park was in paces. So, with quill in hand, he carefully as he could roughly draw a circle to scale with the objects he had drawn in the southern outskirts. It was rough, it was messy, but he was trying to list more places then that library map had tried. However, speaking of which he realized something after he finished drawing. His eyes slowly ran up the river off into the distance into the woods. He shifted in place, curious but cautious about what lay further up river. The library map stopped about here, going no further than the park. Looking back towards Sunberth he considered it a moment longer before looking down the river once more. What harm could there be? Vasin asked himself in his mind as he took one step forward.

Vasin started to internally count his paces as he walked along the river. Walking further up it then he had ever done so before. A little mini-adventure he figured, and one with little risk of him getting lost of course! Or so he reasoned as Sunberth would slowly but surely grow smaller and smaller behind him. Less and fewer signs of activity from people became apparent as he ventured further and further out into the outskirts of Sunberth. Having passed through the treeline he walked on the soft forest floor. The babble of the river kept him company as he ventured forward. It was rather pleasant, especially as he caught the sound of a bird singing somewhere nearby. The number of paces kept on growing higher and higher as he kept walking further and further down alongside the riverbank. The woods were not too thick. So long as he kept to the river he would be able to find his way back. Even if the trees to him barely took different from a close look. However, something unexpected happened as he walked. He smelt something. Coming to a stop he sniffed again. Food? He thought with a blink. Someone was cooking something all the way out here?

His stomach growled a little at the smell of food. How long had he been out? He shifted in place a moment as he tried to guess the direction of the smell. Looking to the river he noted the number of paces and wrote them down. Though he did not draw the river up, as he merely wanted to keep track for when he returned. He had been keeping track of bends as well, but he would spot them on the way back. Curious as to the smell of food, he decided to follow his nose literally. Walking away from the bank and navigating the woods he would venture towards this smell.

Map Making Encounter (Ixzo)

When Ixzo heard him, she was halfway through picking the cartilage off of a thoroughly boiled duck bone. She was trying to separate all the junk from the good meat for her stew. Luckily she had found that once you boil something enough, the meat falls right off the bone… and then shreds itself into tiny pieces in the soup. She may have boiled it too much. Whatever.

She had stayed up late, well into the rise of the sun, in order to finish this stew for Lolan. She was smoking a beaver’s pelt on the edge of her clearing. The entrails of her latest kill had been cleaned and strung up in the branches that hung over her hut, so that she could make use of the elastic innards for a waterskin or a ball for the children. And her collection of human skulls from the past season’s worth of fighting in the city were scattered throughout her clearing in a seemingly random way. Perhaps it would have been foreboding, except the lioness had purposefully put them there so that they could get the full onslaught of sun, or as much as they could through the thick forest canopy, in order to properly dry out. Bones tended to stink the longer they went unpreserved, as the marrow needed to rot as well. But the kelvic did not know how to clean and preserve bones, so the best she could do was let them dry out and hope that they would last her. Luckily the sweet smoke from the beaver pelt and her stew overpowered the stench so that she barely noticed it.

Hands still busy with the bird, she was not paying particularly close attention to her surroundings, unjustly confident in her solitude in the forest. However she was just paranoid enough that her hunter’s ear never really laid to rest. She had been enslaved twice, after all. But as the steady and heavy padding of a human, or some other bipedal creature, sung of an intruder in her ear, and her food was quickly forgotten. Ixzo leapt to her feet, bare toes digging silently into the dirt clearing she had made for herself, and as quietly as a hunter she was back inside of her hut, pulling her bow from the wall and arming herself with seven arrows. One was already strung as soon as the bow was comfortable in her grasp, a force of habit. The other three accompanied her guiding hand, while the last three were gripped in her pulling hand, gripped in her last three fingers so that she still had her forefinger to hook the string with. Unsure how close her new intruder was, she peered out of the hut to try and spot him with her eyes.

She had settled down a little over two bells walk from the city, so her mind could not fathom this being an accident. She could also not fathom anyone having recognized her or been upset with her enough to follow her out. There was a grand total of approximately two humans who knew her name, and one of which was a very tiny girl. She could hear his footsteps and realized that it was not attempting to be stealthy, nor was it the heavy thunder of an attack. Stealth would of course be her best option, but Ixzo wasn’t sure she had the time to surprise whoever was approaching. Instead she stepped out of her hut, taking a solid stance in front of it. Her eyes linked up with the tip of her arrow and she raised her bow to aim directly at the oncoming noise. She could see his figure emerging from the woods, heavily clad in armor and gripping a parchment, when she spoke up.

”Stop.” The common word fell from her gruff voice with a harsh warning. She wasn’t eager to kill one who was not attacking her. But his armor clad body and his shiny new ax made her uncomfortable. He seemed dressed for battle, not a walk through the woods. Nor did he wear the weapons or tools of a hunter, so this was no accident. What was he doing out here? And how had he found her? Ixzo steadied her silver gaze on the man, arrow aiming directly for his neck in case he said the wrong words. It was not the easiest target to hit, but she did not have the confidence her game arrows would pierce the chainmail on his chest. If she could at least stun him, she could finish him off without the arrow. Her mind was already planning on her own attack strategy while she waited for him to speak.

Map Making Encounter (Ixzo)

Vasin had been following his nose map in progress in hand as he ventured further and further away from the river. His curiosity had certainly gotten the better of him. That or his gut and in any case the scent was growing stronger and stronger. He wondered who could be out here this far out? Most he knew in the outskirts preferred to live in a tent city. Perhaps a hunter who had decided to set up camp instead of risking their game being stolen? If that was the case, Vasin realized he could very well be an unwelcome guest. Or perhaps a simple traveler cooking their meal? Either way, if he was exploring the river he would rather happen upon them then the other way around. However, just up ahead he could almost see a clearing in the foliage. He grew closer and closer to it, unable to make anything out just yet. However just as he was starting to emerge from the wood he heard something. Very rough and harsh with the tone of warning. He had been asked or well ordered to stop. Well then, seems he has been spotted before he even saw them.

Vasin did as he asked though with a momentary stutter stumble coming to a stop. He squinted looking forward and his eyes caught onto a figure. Standing there, and armed with a bow aimed right at him. Seemed his idea of a hunter not wanting to be disturbed was probably correct. He would not speak for a moment but knew they probably wanted an explanation as they had not shot him just yet. Vasin would need to pick his next words carefully less he wanted a fight. Hunters probably didn't carry armor piercing arrows... or well he hoped they didn't. If he said the wrong thing or did the wrong thing then they had first shot. He would rather not test his armor in such a situation against the skilled eye of a hunter. Vasin slowly let out a breath and decided on what to say in the tense moment.

"Sorry for the startle!" Vasin called out with a pause."I was making a map along the river, and I noticed the scent of your cooking." he would explain quickly not wanting to wear down their patience."I mean no harm." he added on not daring to reach for any of his weapons as he stood there. He would wait until they either invited him forward or told him to scram. After all, they had the bow and arrow pointed at him at this moment. From where he stood his eyes trained on Ixzo he did not get the best of looks at her camp.

Lores:
Self: Feels more confident with armor on
Land Navigation: Follow the river
Cartography: Measure only halfway and then double it

Comments:
I really liked all the thought that Vasin put into his mapmaking. It’s too bad this thread didn’t get far. If you could organize your thread list, that’d be nice. And heads up that your ledger has your Spring 519 wages and living expenses listed as having been for Spring 518. Easy fix, no worries.

While you’re allowed to be a season behind on living expenses, it’s best to get your Summer 519 expenses in your ledger sooner rather than later. I hope you enjoy your grades! Make sure to edit your grade request and, if you have any comments or concerns about your grade, please do feel free to message me either through PMs or Discord.

Izxo :
Skills:
1 Cooking
1 Intimidation
1 Wilderness Survival (Forest)

Lores:
Cooking: Meat separates from bone when boiled
Food Preservation: Food can be dried out in the sun

Comments:
Izxo’s food struggles were really well written! A neat little wilderness survival post. If you come back, please do update your thread list to include your Spring 519 threads. Your ledger’s good though, so I see no reason to withhold a grade. If you have any comments or concerns about your grade, please do feel free to message me either through PMs or Discord.

EDIT: (Plains) changed to (Forest) in Ixzo's WS grade.
