Appearance: Light brown hair, dark golden eyes, smooth olive skin, and long-limbed (for his people). His fingers, aged from years and years of practice, look like the branches of a desert tree that withstood generations of wind. Not like the strong men of his tribe, Fabell's physique carries the femininity of his Selban mother with the uncompromising gaze of a Beldra smith.

Character Concept

Fabell Asan Selban is a traveling musician storyteller, a unique discipline of storytelling his mother's family has passed down through generations of daughters. While most Selban families do not carry this tradition, Fabell's mother is reputed to have been the descendant of a mixed union between a Chaktawe warrior and a Selban warrior - at least this is the story his mother and grandmother have told him, and over the generations this strange practice of interlocking music with visual language sprung up within Fabell's family.

Currently he is on his first journey, following in his mother and grandmother's footsteps, traveling for 5 years before returning to his home, during which he will absorb the stories of all those he encounters and then bring back to weave into the tales of his family (or so mother trained him). Normally given to the women of his family, because his father never married into the tribe, Fabell's mother refused to take another husband and raised him as her apprentice. This has given rise to much gossip about her choice of partners over the years. In addition, often the storytellers of Maiyana's family marry quite late (as her own mother did) due to the longevity that the travels require.

He is currently living in the port city of Lhavit, a city Fabell heard from many travelers during his youth of the vibrant and diverse atmosphere, and in his mind the perfect location to begin the collection of stories. While the trip to Yahebah from the desert was perhaps the most traumatic of his experiences (due to the emotional toil he felt knowing what was to come), the sea voyage itself was pleasant, and for the first time in his life he tasted both the fear and the potential of freedom.

Character History

His father Asan, a well-known Beldra smith, infamously carried out a dalliance with the young Selban storyteller Maiyana, then a spry apprentice under her mother's tutelage whose training took her to many camps in Eyktol. However, she refused to marry the Beldra, hiding her pregnancy from her tribe until many years later when Asan discovered he had a son. While he wanted to claim the child as his own, Fabell (already growing under his mother's guidance) never accepted Asan as his guardian and made the choice to stay with his mother and her family, to which Asan reluctantly (and somewhat gratefully) agreed, due to his ever-growing family (and wives) among his own tribe.

Language

Fluent Language: Shiber: Fabell is fluent in the tongue of his people, both in speaking and in writing.

Basic Language: Common: He can speak common to a passable degree from the many merchant caravans whom his people traded with, although his vocabulary is restricted to basic conversation about daily life - he struggles with the more esoteric concepts, especially with regards to local Lhavit religion and philosophy.

Poor Language: Tawna: A few smattering words and phrases passed down over the generations continue to play a presence in his life, although they hold only flavor, no substance to even how Fabell sees his own identity, long-forgotten from his Chaktawe ancestor.

Heirloom: Asan forged a beautiful flute for his lover Maiyana during their secret courtship in his proposal for marriage, in which the instrument housed a hidden blade as long as the flute itself. Sadly, long ago, the blade itself was shattered in a fierce battle, leaving only the flute sheath remaining.

Before Fabell left for his journey, his mother gave him the flute as a way to continue the practice of his craft, as well as hoping one day he might repair it and bring it back to her in memory of her only love.

The head joint of the instrument served also as a hilt of the blade, which extended into the hollow space of the flute. The weapon was forged so that the sound coming from the flute was less deep-throated as a normal flute, but contained several special harmonics that gave Maiyana's performances an utterly memorable place.
