It was fairly early in the day and already Ari’Ellin was out and about, buying everything she might need for the day. Her first stop was the Jugged Hare, just to see if they had any bones that she would be able to practice with. She’d grabbed her backpack and her money as she left the house, making her way from Sharai peak to Shinyama peak until she could see the butchers shop and a wide grin spread across her face.

“Morning. You have bone?” she asked warmly as she entered the currently quiet shop and saw the older human woman that seemed to be the one in charge of the shop.

“Bones? Depends on what exactly your looking for.” Varda responded and Ari grinned wider, thankful that the woman didn’t seem to struggle with understanding her less than ideal grasp of the common language.

For a few moments Ari’Ellin stayed quiet as she thought about what she had in mind before speaking. “Strong wild animal, like pig? Bone from chest, like this?” she decided, pointing to her rib cage and hoping that the woman would be able to understand her.

“A rib bone of a wild boar?” the woman said and Ari nodded rapidly, focusing on the word rib as she tried to commit it to memory. If she wanted bones in the future it was best to learn their common names. “Well we have a few in stock at the moment, nobody has wanted them for stock yet so how many do you want?” the woman asked.

Again Ari’Ellin was stuck for a couple of moments as she tried to decide what to do. She only had ideas for one bone, though if she messed up her plans she’d be left hoping that the butchers still had bones available.

“Please two.” she managed to say, deciding that it would be best to have enough to account for any possible mistakes that she could make in the carving process.

“That will be two kina then please.” the woman said and Ari nodded, digging around in her bag until she’d managed to find two kina, then handing them over and accepting the two rib bones that the woman handed over.

Stepping outside the butchers shop, Ari took a moment to look over the bones and hummed softly. Both appear to be undamaged, and though most of the meat had been removed from the bones already, there appeared to be a few ligaments and tendons still attached that she would have to find a way to remove.the remnants and make the bones smoother and easier to carve. For that she knew that she’d need a market!

Quickly she made her way across the peaks to the Azure Market that located itself on Zintia peak.

Smiling softly as she looked around the market she found a few things that she thought could be useful for cleaning the bones.

First she’d found a large cooking pot that she had been told would hold up to two gallons of water. The man running the stall had sold it to her for five topaz kina. Ari believed that perhaps boiling the bones in water before attempting to clean them would hurry the process and make it considerably easier for herself.

Next she’d managed to purchase a yard of cloth that she couldn’t identify. It was plain and light brown in colour, though it was clean and that was what matter to Ari most. The woman running that stall had charged her five topaz kina for the cloth. Ari was more intending on using it as a rag to try to wipe the rib bones clean and hopefully polish them slightly.

Finally she’d found a stall selling supplies for tailors and seamstresses. Ari herself had very little knowledge of sewing, however the stall was also selling some lengths of yarn. If she wanted to make a talisman that would be wearable, she knew she would have to tied it to something, and the yarn seemed to be a better option than a regular, thin thread. The yarn had cost her five topaz kinda again, and happy with her purchases, Ari’Ellin made her way back to her home in the Okomo Estates on Sharai Peak.

Ledger Updates-3k, 5tk for the 2 boar rib bones, 2 gallon cooking pot, yard of cloth, and yarn.

All That Remains

Getting back into the small cottage she called her home, Ari’Ellin set her stuff down and picked up the pot first, going outside to fill it with water before setting it in the hearth, allowing the heat from the fire to heat the water and start to gently boil the water. Humming to herself, she retrieved the bones grimacing slightly at the sight of the pieces of tendon and ligament that were still attached to them before she dropped them both into the almost boiling water, opting to leave them to soak and boil for a while.

Whilst that was boiling she moved to her table and sat in her chair, reaching over to her chest and reaching into it to grab her blank book, a quill, and a pot of ink. She needed to decide what she was trying to draw out from the pig bones. Carefully at the top of the page she wrote ‘Pig Bones - Chest’ in her best common, underneath it writing similar in Kontinese, replacing Chest with Ribs, able to remember and use the correct word in her native tongue.

Then she started writing down one side of the page, working out what pigs or boar could represent to people. She wrote most of it in Kontinese, with her best attempt at translating to common written next to it.

‘Hungry, Greedy, Aggressive, Powerful, Strong-willed.’ were the Kontinese words that she chose to write, with a few common words written directly next to each one to offer a translation. ‘Hungry, want lots, danger, strong, -‘ she’d managed to write, unable to recall the right word for strong willed.

Then she thought of the ribs and what ribs could represent. She wanted to make sure that everything that she chose to use would work for both the wild boar aspect and the fact that she was using rib bones from those animals.

It took her longer to come up with a list of words that would work for rib bones, although as soon as she managed to think of them, she started writing them down in Kontinese.

‘Strength, Protection, Stability, Security, Restraint, Cage.’

Those were the words that she could think of, and after writing those, she spent a little extra time writing down all of the common translations that she think of.

Next she read over both of the lists, deciding which words she can use for her attempted at maledicting the bones. Soon she’d circle strength and powerful from the pig side, and then strength from the rib side. She had chosen what she would focus on, and now it was time for her to decide how to represent that in a carving.

Humming, she dipped her quill into the ink again and roughly drew a circle. She wanted to keep the design simple as there wasn’t much space to work with on the bone, and she didn’t feel skilled enough to carve much detail yet anyway.

She thought for a few more ticks before putting her quill down and going to fetch her runestones, looking through them until she found the one that represented physical power and strength. Happy with herself, she was now certain that rather than a drawing or a word she could use the rune in her circle. That should make it a lot easier, as the rune only consisted of a few straight lines.

Softly humming a tune to herself, she picked up the quill again and sat down, copying the rune into the drawing that she was planning to carve. The quill and ink weren’t the best tools for such a task, but it wasn’t long before a messy scrawling adorned the page. Even with how messy it was, she was happy with what she was planning.

Humming softly, she cover her ink and left her things where they were, returning to the hearth where the bones where boiling in the water. The water was still simmering as she got there, and she couldn’t help but shrug her shoulders as she decided that the bones had been in the pot for long enough.

Grabbing her new cloth, she folded it into quarters and used it to pull the pot from the hearth, before carefully carrying it to her front door, putting it down briefly on order to open the door before she picked it up again and started to gently pour the water from the pot and onto the grass, leaving just enough water in the pot to half submerge the bones, before she carried the pot back inside.

She moved to sit on the floor, reaching into the pot and pulling one of the bones out, seeing that a lot of the remnants left on the bones had disappeared, leaving one or two stubborn sections still on the bone.

Nodding at those sections, she unfolded the cloth and started to rub at those sections, finding that after half a chime of rubbing at the fleshier areas seemed to be enough to remove the mess. She dipped the cloth into some of the water and rubbed at the second patch of debris, happy when it seemed to come away from the bone, leaving the bone discolour but clean of anything that would rot.

Grinning wider she reached into the pot and retrieved the second and last piece of bone. There was a lot more left of the bone, although Ari was half hoping that it would at least wipe away from the bone easily.

Dipping the cloth into the shallow layer of water at the bottom of the pot, she exhaled, beginning to rub at the second bone. Some pieces of debris came away quickly and easily while others were much more stubborn. She kept rubbing at the bone, occasionally pausing to dampen the cloth, cleaning off more of the bone other than one tendon still there.

She put her cloth to the side and instead started using her fingers to start picking at the tendon, weakened it until she could pull it away from the bone.

After around ten chimes, she’d finally managed to clean the bone, and carefully she wrung the cloth out, being sure to clear off any noticeable pieces of debris from it. Then she set about rubbing each of the bones once more, making sure they were fully prepared.

Happy with the state of the bones, Ari’Ellin scooped the bones from the floor and walking back to the table and he drawing. She couldn’t help but compare the size of the drawing in the book and the space on the bone that she was able to work with.

Frowning to herself, she reached into her chest and retrieved her engravers toolkit from her father. She was certain that the extra sharpness and hardness of the diamond would make quick work of the would, and now she was ready...

Humming to herself, she picked up one the tools, checking how thick the diamond tip was, deciding that she would start with this tool. It wasn’t the thinnest, but as she wasn’t including words on the bone and was instead using a rune, the thinnest of her tools likely wouldn’t be needed.

Sighing softly, she held the tool like a pen in her right hand, and use her other hand to steady the bone on the table in order to keep it still while she attempt to scratch the design into the bone. It took her a while to decide exactly where the design should go on the rib bone, though eventually she chose to do it towards the end of the flattest part of the bone, leaving room higher up on the bone to carve out a hole or another way to attach the bone to some sort of jewelry.

She took a few moments of breathing, trying to steady her hand before she brought the tool to the bone, attempting to scratch the top layers of the bone away in order to make a circle. As the tool scraped along the bone, very little seemed to change and a frown spread across Ari’Ellin. It seemed that she would have to press harder whilst attempting to carve the design into the bone.

Frowning more, she pressed slightly harder with the tool, seeing a faint line beginning to appear where the surface was being scratched away ever so slightly. She was slightly disappointed by just how faint the mark was, but as long as their was a design somewhat visible on the bone, she could go back over it later to neaten it up and deepen the line.

She carried on, pushing the diamond tipped tool against the bone and moving it around the bone until a rough circle shape had been made that was just shy of an inch in it’s diameter. A smile spread across her face as she realised that that the first part of her Malediction carving was completed, and next she would have to draw the rune.

She looked back at her messy design, paying attention to how the corners of the rune ended just shy of the circle and she nodded gently. She wasn’t sure if she’d have quite that level of control and opted to start with the lines ending slightly further from the circular line. She wanted keep the whole of the rune within the malediction circle to give it a higher chance of working.

Humming a tune to herself, she began to scratch the first line into the bone, stopping at a safe distance from the edge of the circle. As the rune was fairly simple and she didn’t have to worry about adding any small details, she didn’t have to make the rune much larger than she was planning. She nodded softly to herself, pressing her tool to the bone and drawing the rest of the runes, happy to see the faint lines beginning to take the form of the rune that she hoped would have the desired effect.

All That Remains

Once the design was faintly scratched and carved into the bone, she looked closely at it, reaching into the chest and pulling out the other engraving tools. She thought carefully about which one to use, realising that using a thicker tip could help to make the design more visible, and that it could be easier to deepen the design with the thicker tip.

Nodding as she chose, she picked out a thicker tool, and then pressed it into the bone, carefully moving it along the thin, shallow grooves that she had made with the thinner tool. She pressed down gently and moved it along, seeing that the lines still weren’t as noticeable as she’d have liked. Then she applied even more pressure, slowly and carefully moving the tool before a grin spread across her face at the carved line she’d left behind.

This time it was considerably deeper and much more visible and she couldn’t help but chuckle out loud at her success. She continued on with the circle, happily scratching the bone away and leaving behind the thicker, deeper gouges in the bone before she pulled away from the bone to examine the circle. In her eyes it could have been much neater, and it could have been even deeper, but she was happy with what she had made so far.

She continued the process with the rune, beginning to notice how the light in her room was changing as the sun moved to different parts of the sky. Until then she hadn’t fully realised just how long the carving of the design had taken her, and a part of her was taken aback by that knowledge. For a few moments she sat in confusion before she continued with her carving, wanting to finish it before the sun began to set and the light became too dull to continue working.

Her panicking had lead to her rushing several lines, and once she’d finished, she looked over the carving, frowning slightly. It still looked like the rune she had chosen, but the lines she’d carved were jagged and messy. Anybody looking at it would be able to tell just how much she’d rushed it. It was too late to change now, and all Ari’Ellin could do was hope that it would still work.

Frowning at her foolishness, Ari decided to add one more thing the carving. Using the same tool, she scratched away the bone right in the center of the circle, gradually carving out a small divot that would hold her blood as she activated the talisman.

Once she’d finished, she placed the tool down and sighed, unsure of whether to activate it first, or whether she should tie the yarn around it to make it wearable first.

“Yarn tomorrow...” she decided to herself, mumbling the words quietly as she looked for something sharp enough to cut herself with, soon finding her dagger placed next to her bed, and then she moved back to the table.

She spent more than a few ticks preparing herself, focus on her ideas of strength and power, hoping to all of the gods that even if her carving wasn’t the most clear, her intentions would be and that would be enough to imbue the talisman with the feelings of strength and power that she was focusing so hard on.

“Strength, power, strength, power...” she began repeating the words, almost like a mantra as she picked up the knife. Digging the knife into her finger, she fought the urge to wince as she felt it break the skin and she kept repeating the same two words over and over again. Putting the knife down, she moved her finger to hover over the divot in the bone, squeezing the blood out of her finger until enough had gathered to drip on the bone, filling the divot and pooling just around it.

The ritual was completed, and hurriedly Ari’Ellin moved her finger to her lips, sucking on it to try to stop the bleeding as she watched the talisman expectantly, wondering if her attempt had created anything other than a badly carved design.
