When the giant mentioned that Alenias had been trying to steal she turned a confused look at him, "I wasn't trying to steal, Treanas said it's bad to steal, so I don't steal," there was only sincerity, and a bit of pleading, in her words, because it was true. Stealing was when you took something that was someone elses, but no one had been holding the shiny thing, so it wasn't stealing.

She then turned her dark eyes back to the short man as he ruffled her hair, causing her to shake her head, and then spoke. The mention of her having not enough meat on her bones brought to mind the image of the giant putting her in a cage and feeding her to get bigger, like the animals sold in the market. This set her shivering again, and pushed from her mind the thought of answering his question about Treanas. It was a silly question anyways. Treanas wasn't a sibling, or a friend, or anything like that, he was just Treanas.

When the giant asked his question she stared up at him for a few moments before quietly answering, "B... Because you're really really big, and were taking me away..."

A Bumpy Day (Open)

Kora shot the man a small frown at the larger man for the swat, giving him a “What’d I do?” sort of look. He did know what they did with thieves and had seen it happen on many occasions, though it had never deterred him from doing so. Besides, most people could be talked out of the situation if you were quick and cunning enough. But he paid the man no heed and turned back to the small girl, not really seeming to mind that he’d seemingly been ignored.

“People don’t eat other people just ‘cause they’re bigger, you know.” He said before the other man could answer. Truth be told, he found her seemingly irrational fear of eaten somewhat funny, though wasn’t going to make too many comments that had her shuttering, amusing as it might be to taunt the girl. He couldn’t put a finger on it, but there was something… strange about her. Her movements were too quick and too sharp, yet they seemed natural enough for her. He suspected there was more to this girl than met the eye, and although he hadn’t a clue what, he certainly intended to find out. “If it’s so bad to steal, what were you going to do with that bauble over there in the merchant stand?”, he queried, waving a hand vaguely at the merchant stall she’d been eyeing earlier.

The girl looked up at him for a few moments before speaking.
"B... Because you're really really big, and were taking me away..."
Roman scowled at what the girl said, together with what she said before this was making him quite mad, she continued to lie even when he caught her in the act and now she was accusing him of being a mindless brute that fed on human flesh because he was big! It wasn't his fault both his parents where also on the large side!

"I was taking you away because most people don't like thieves, Most of them of them end up in one of the many canals around here if they are lucky, others get arrested by the ebonstryfe and you don't want to know what they do to the people in the dungeons." Roman glared at her. "I won't throw you in the water or give you to the ebonstryfe so you don't have to act like you are innocent little girl." Roman said, the irritation clear in his voice.
"I saw you trying to steal that little trinket so trying to talk yourself out of it won't work."
He didn't even care if she sounded sincere, he caught while she was stealing so she was lying.

A Bumpy Day (Open)

Alenias looked back and forth between the giant man and the short man as they spoke, and slowly started to relax. It seemed like the giant man wasn't going to eat her, which was good, but he was still holding onto her and saying she had been going to steal, and now the shorter man was saying it to. She didn't steal, Treanas told her stealing was bad, it would cause trouble, so she didn't steal!

Stomping her foot on the ground she glared at both men, "I don't steal! Treanas said stealing is bad, and stealing is taking what someone is holding, because that means its there's, and so I don't steal!" she yelled as she pointed at the shiny thing, still sitting on the table, "No one is holding the pretty thing, so I wasn't going to steal it!"

Even as the last of her tears ran down her cheeks the fear was gone from her body, her shoulders now tense with anger as she glared at the two men. How dare they say Treanas was wrong!

“Oh calm down you” he said with a somewhat playful tap on the head and a big grin. Her idea on what was stealing and what wasn’t were positively amusing. He didn’t agree, but then again, he didn’t see any problem didn’t see any problem with taking an item from somebody, as long as the never knew he had taken it. Inwardly, he sighed, if the larger man hadn’t been standing around this girl could prove to be quite amusing, but he didn’t feel it was worth the effort to separate the girl and whatever his name was.

And now she was angry, which told him that she regarded Treanas, whoever he was, incredibly highly. Then, a thought came to him. “Girl, are you a slave?” he asked, politely, no hint of disdain in his voice. He tried his best not to show his amusement at the little girl’s unbarred emotions. They reminded him of someone he’d once known, though that someone had been much older.

Roman just rolled his eyes at how the girl reacted and ignored the weird man as good as he could, either she was a bit slow to begin with or she was carefully manipulated into thinking that way, both where valid options as far as he saw. No other kind of human would think in those terms as far as he knew.

"Girl.." He stopped, thinking a bit on how he should break it to her, before shrugging and just trying to put it as gently as possible and crouched down so that he could more or less look her into the eyes. "I think that Treanas you are talking about was manipulating you to do his job. Because, the world doesn't work that way, if nobody holds it it doesn't mean nobody owns it. I mean you had to have noticed other people got angry at you when they saw it right?"
He just sighed as he finished his probably failed explanation.

“Girl, are you a slave?”the other man asked her in a neutral tone.
Roman blinked at that prospect, he didn't really think about that, but who would want to have a child as a slave? Was she born into it? He quickly checked the hands of the kid not really caring what she thought of it.
"Nope there are no slave marks on her hand so she isn't a slave,"
he let out a sigh of relief, free slaves where quickly recaptured and if possible delivered to their masters, were more punishment was dished out or the more common option they where sold again. "and before you think about it we are not going to sell her into slavery."

Alenias still glared at the giant as he spoke to her, even when he used words that she didn't know what they meant, like manipulating, and she gave a huff in response to his question, "That's because they're silly or stupid. If they want to keep something and don't want to hold it then they should put it in their home, not out on the street."

Then the shorter man used another odd word, slave, and she blinked at him, and then at the giant man as he looked her over and said she wasn't a slave. With so much strange talk going on between the two her curiosity was rising up, and after a few moments she asked, "What's a slave?"

A Bumpy Day (Open)

The way that the man grabbed at the girl’s arm to examine it irked at Kora, and his slight frown directed at him showed as much. He couldn’t quite explain the feeling, but he felt it nonetheless keenly. For some reason, it sent his mind racing, remembering things he’d much rather not remember. He held the disapproving glare for a moment, but then it was gone as he turned back to the girl, replaced by a soft smile.

Well now, there’s a question not often asked.” He started, pondering how to best answer her question before the man could interject. “A slave is someone who serves someone else. Somebody who always does as they are told because they have to.” He concluded, though as he did a thought occurred to him. "Or perhaps... are you this Treanas's pet?" he queried, sounding somewhat intrigued by the idea.

He had lied to the girl, to a point, and he had also told the truth, to a point. He dearly hoped the girl would speak up before the man got a chance to ‘correct’ him. Or maybe he’d just let it slip by.

Roman just groaned when he heard her response to his explanation. He just gave up there was no way he would put in more time and effort into pulling her warped world view back on track.
"If you want to believe that go ahead." Roman said in a tired voice letting out a loud sigh and stood back up, loosening his grip on her arm somewhat.

“A slave is someone who serves someone else. Somebody who always does as they are told because they have to." Roman just nodded in agreement with what the man said, If you had to explain the concept off owning people to somebody who didn't even grasp that you could own things you weren't holding it was a sure recipe for headaches.
"That is more or less what a slave is, thank you....." Roman paused when he realized he never even asked for both the girl and the mans name.
"Ah dreadfully sorry, we never properly introduced ourselves right? My name is Roman, pleased to meet you both." Roman said in a rather forced pleasant tone, the irritation aimed to the man, and in smaller doses towards the child easily heard.

The giant was weird, it was the truth not what she believed, and so Alenias was starting to ignore him. She did notice him loosening his grip on her arm though. She would have to wait for a good chance to try and pull away. So she turned her attention back to the short man, and what a slave was.

She thought a moment of his words, and then smiled brightly at him as she, "I'm not a slave then, because I do what Treanas says because I want to. And I'm not a pet, because pets go in cages," the shorter man was still a little weird, but he was nicer than the giant at least.

When the giant said his name was Roman, and asked for her name, Alenias took the chance to try and pull away. Throwing a kick at his shin she pulled on her arm as hard as she could to try and get away.
