"Speech"
Zach would have loved to be able to see how Moritz’s mind was working. He was sure that there was a lot being thought out internally, with just as much being spoken to Zach. Moritz talked in a very roundabout manner, and it took Zach a few ticks to register everything he was saying. A wry smile ghosted across his mouth and he shook his head lightly in amusement.
The Drykas tried to follow carefully as Moritz spoke of his meeting with the rulers of Lhavit. He was somewhat relieved to hear that they did not appear to have been overly interested in the topic of Moritz’s eyes. His brow dropped into a small frown however at his last sentence. Why would it have been requested to keep it a secret? It was not like it was easy to hide the fact that they were walking about with starburst eyes. Zach was about to ask as much when the boy spoke again.
He blinked in confusion as Moritz appeared to give them a title. Iraso… It was a foreign word to the hunter, and perhaps the most important piece of information he had heard so far. It was frustrating to Zach, that Moritz appeared so reluctant to share anything in detail with him, though if he had been sworn to secrecy he supposed that was why. He wondered how easy this witch would be to find. Likely not easy at all, for the mountains around Lhavit were dangerous at the best of times.
Again Moritz mentioned going blind and mad, and Zach supressed a shudder. It appeared he had been lucky, though in reality the hunter had not had much of a choice in the matter. It was a case of accept the gift or die on the side of the mountain.
He listened with interest as Moritz listed the reasons for wanting a pig. It appeared there was a lot more to it that just finding something to experiment on. Not that the Drykas had even thought or dreamed of doing such a thing anyway. He said as much in response to Moritz’s question.
“Honestly I had not intended to use it on anyone… The idea never occurred to me. I wouldn’t even know where to start with it.”
Still there were more reasons. Zach’s mind wandered momentarily back to the Spicecoat dogs he had seen in the main part of the Bazaar. Would one of them be of more use if Zach gave them the eyes? He dismissed the idea right away. He definitely needed to know more before even entertaining the mere thought, let alone carrying out such an action. He noticed too, that Moritz had used the word ‘settlement’ to describe where he was living a couple of times. He would have to ask the boy about it, so he could hopefully sate his curiosity and let Madeira know where her son had ended up.
Zach gave Moritz his full attention again when he went on to speak of the word ‘Iraso’. Zach was, apparently, an Iraso. As was Moritz and the fox. It made sense that the gift had a name. He nodded as it was explained that animals with the eyes – Iraso animals – were ‘more’ than regular beasts. The fox had appeared much more intelligent and aware than any other he had encountered before, so that at least made sense to him.
Zach chuckled. “I suppose you did answer my question for I only asked for a little more information. I think I can see why a pig might be useful. I suppose it would be able to help you with some things, right?” He thought best on how to word his next however, for he was quickly learning that it was best to choose words carefully when speaking with Moritz.
“I would like to know if there is a way to learn exactly what this ability is. As I said, I was given the eyes by a fox, and so it was not able to tell me anything at all. I managed to work out that I can see trails of some sort when I am using it. Is that all there is to it? Why can you not speak about it to other people?”
Zach paused momentarily, considering how to explain the question without making Moritz feel like he was demanding anything. “I only ask that because obviously we can’t hide it, and I don’t see a reason for it to be a secret. After all, magic is taught freely in Lhavit is it not?”
Zach clasped and unclasped his hands in his lap while thinking on how to answer the final question.
“I suppose afraid is quite a strong word to have used. Hesitant would have been better. It is because I know so little about it. The fox could not speak to me, so I was left to work this out on my own. I had no idea what it was, how it worked, anything.
Having something new and unknown pushed upon you is a scary thing. I didn’t think about it at the time as it really was a life or death situation. But since then, and after speaking to your mother, she told me a little about how some magics work. About how if you use too much you can hurt yourself. Is that true for this? Do you know if there is somewhere I can go to learn how to use it properly?”
