Description:

Every city needs a religious center. If Syliras had to choose, they'd worship a dead God. But since Sylir's death, and the discovery of the Windoak, faith in Syliras hasn't yet stabilized into one firm religion. In fact, all faiths are welcomed so long as the laws of Syliras are obeyed. And to that end, only one church has been built in Syliras since its founding. The church, a gift of the Dyres family to the denizens of the city - is an elegant building crafted of native stone with lofty ceilings and wonderful stonework. Enormous pews made of giant sorrow oak fill the place, seating quite a few individuals. The temple, while having great services, still remains a place of meditation and reflection. It's stained glass windows reflect pools of colored light over the muted grays of stone and the gleam of polished wood. The doors are always unlocked, and not once in Sylira's short history has the temple been stole from or valdalized.

Glav has for the whole of his life been a student of religion. Having taken it upon himself to intensely study the Gods and their interactions with the world and each other, Glav is a bastion of knowledge in a somewhat chaotic life. He holds services every five days, and maintains the Temple of All Gods where folks can come, meditate, pray or even strike up a discussion with him.

Glav has one enormous secret, and it is the reason he seems so wise and at peace with himself and the others who come to see him seeking answers and spiritual advice. Though virtually unknown, even among the Gods, Glav has connections that run deep to the city of Syliras, and could be considered one of its greatest protectors.

Leo Varniak paced from one end of the temple's doors to the other, then back again. 785. It was, he considered, his fault for coming way too early. He could not remember sleeping in two days now, and concluded that he had probably forgotten to do so. He wondered if he had eaten anything at all before heading here. He gazed upon the Syliran cityscape for another moment, then made one more rounabout trip to the temple's doors. 786.

The necessities of the body could wait a little longer, as far as he was concerned. Today was a day of answers, which explained the constant patrolling of the doors. It might have been his feverish imagination playing tricks on him, but it seemed like the worshippers slipping into the temple were giving him strange looks as they passed by. 787. It might have something to do with the presence of a young human only clad in a long-sleeved shirt and light trousers in the chilly winter air, marching between the two ends of the door like a piece of clockwork. Except he stared back, and suddenly everybody started minding their own business. One had to wonder if they had never seen a waiting man in their entire lives. 788.

What seemed a good idea in a swirl of evening after a few glasses of wine, was strange and stark in morning light. The Konti awoke with an unease that quickly translated into memory: there was a meeting, and it was important.

Also, it seemed a gang of Pycons had snuck in during the night and given her skull a round of gleeful kicking.

Sondra disentangled herself from blankets without remembering the particulars of her appointment. Only as she splashed cold water on her face did the details occur to her.
Today she sought illumination, perhaps by fire. There was also the gnawing understanding she might be in over her head if Leo was as accurate as he was somber.

Cowled and anxious, she traipsed through the white streets towards the temple. The air was brisk enough to singe her lungs and dissipate some mental fog. She was breathing heavily by the time she slid towards the doors, half skating on the icy ground.

"Morning," she announced with a nod towards Leo. She came closer, brushing loose snow from her sleeves.
"Lady-Lis," a mild oath, "You look like I feel."

She clapped her gloved hands to keep them warm. Her looks towards the temple had a mild dread.
"So this Father Glav, what makes you trust him?"

Terminus had risen as early as his late night had allowed. He took some time preparing for the morning as the previous night had held many things for him and all of them life altering. He had much to think about as he washed and combed his hair and got ready to go to the Temple. Foremost on his mind was the facinating Avi, it was like he couldn't get her out of his mind. He couldsee her lovely and ever changin eyes and her long dark hair with the large feathers in it. He wondered what kind of bird she was, but would have to wait to find out. He had spoken to Abashai about his feelings and gotten some answers, but most of this depended on Avi and wheither she harbored the same feelings and he had not had the courage to ask her yet.

He went downstairs for a quick meal as the second thing entred his mind and that was the conversation with Leo. This was his destiny and that he knew but was his destinty wrapped up with Avi's? The questions that entered his mind were many and disturbed him. After finishing the meal he donned his cloak and headed toward the Temple the events still swirling in his mind.

As he walked down the streets, the chill wind whipped his cloak and he didnt feel it due to the inherant heat of his body due to the mark. The crowds of people caused conflicting emotions to fill his head. He finally cleared it as the enormous structure loomed infront of him. He entered the always open doors and let his mark guide him to where Leo paced. He smiled quietly as he saw Sondra looking rather haggard,he was sure the nigth for her had been spent in drink and it did not seem to suprise him that Leo looked worse for wear.

Well you two look like you have seen worse days. Im ready to meet Farher Glav when you are. his was a statement of fact as he was ready, for many of the answers he sought probably lay in this man's knowledge combined with Leo's

Re: Fire walk with us [Term, Sondy & Goss]

Postby Leo Varniak on December 30th, 2009, 9:52 pm

Leo turned sharply halfway through 789. He raised his right hand in a rudimentary greeting. "Good morning to you," he said. So she had come, and she looked painfully sober. He had feared she might not come once the fumes of alcohol had somewhat faded away, especially with her not being one of Ivak's own. Sondra was a bit of a mystery to him; with Terminus, he could at least begin to suspect his motives as a worshipper, but the Konti was unlike the seers he had met before.

Terminus arrived but moments later, and the trio was reunited. None of them looked terribly normal, and it was probably to be expected. Leo felt this was something of an accomplishment for him. Getting through an obstacle without burning it. You learned something new every day.

"Excellent," he puffed a large cloud of steam. "Thank you for coming. Oh, I just remembered he does not like being called Father. Just Glav."

"I trust Glav," he answered Sondra's question, "because he has more gnosis marks than I have fingers... and possibly toes. And from the right gods. I like to think so many gods can't all be wrong. If they are, then we are all doomed regardless." He did not tell them the full story because it was supposed to be a well-guarded secret. If Glav felt like telling them he was a son of Sylir, he'd have to do so himself.

"I will lead the way," he offered, and followed through. He was impatient, and felt like a big stationary target just standing there by the temple doors. He cast a suspicious glance towards the street and delved into the temple, looking for Glav and hoping they could get a private audience with him without delay.

As the trio walked into the temple, there was undoubtedly an odd air to the place. Not only was it usually empty, but there was a tang to the air, a sort of spearmint scent that laced the place. Leo would remember from previous visits that the place smelled of well oiled oak, with a tint of lemon, and floor polish. The main hall, however, did greet them with a welcoming warmth as he and his little group passed through finding it empty. Leo would suspect where Father Glav was, and indeed did find him in the little side sitting room, pacing in a rather frustrated manner before one of the wing-backed chairs. The chair itself contained two rather elegant tabby cats, both identical. They had unusually exotic long haired grey coats that were brindled with white and black. Holding an air of elegance, one sat there rather amused as the other only groomed itself, ignoring the priests pacing.

"This is an outrageous bargain. You know as well as I do that this benefits you as much as it does me. I'm not saying I won't do it. I will. But you owe me on this one." Glav said looking rather frustrated. One of the cats smiled, laughed, then replied. "I doubt your being too put out by this. After all, life gets easier from here on out for them." It said, then leaped from the chair. As it did, its form shifted and became a rather large dog that in turn morphed into what appeared to be a Dhani constrictor in its full humanoid form. Glav reached into his robes, pulled forth something wrapped in a silk cloth, and handed it to the constrictor that had since transformed into a benshira woman. The woman smiled, and by the time it pocketed the item (whatever it was) the creature was a seven foot Jamoura. "Thank you" the jamoura turned pycon said, grinned, and let its eyes fall on Leo and its party. "Ah, as you suspected. Your guests are here."

Then the creature turned, by this time a charoda, and headed out the door laughing. "Glav, don't be a stranger." And then it was gone, looking more or less fully human by the time it passed by the group. When it moved from the sitting room carpet onto the slick wood and marble floor, the party could hear horses hooves clopping - four belatedly - rather than human footsteps.

Glav smiled, nodded, and gestured for the group to come in. "Ionu can be a little distracting, but at least it brought the Naryn for us." Glav gestured to the cat still sitting on the chair looking... bored. Only, it wasn't quite catlike anymore. It seemed to have developed a third set of legs centrally located between the first and second sets, and its color was busy changing.

"It takes a bit of getting used to at first, but Naryns are great for security. There's not much that gets past them, and fortunately almost everything dismisses them as being only a pet." It looked almost normal now, with four legs instead of six only this time orange rather than grey. "I'm glad you dropped by though. Your timing was good. I actually picked it up for you as a house warming present. But that wasn't why you dropped by. What can I help you with?" He said, reaching over to pick up the Naryn and lay it across a shoulder. The creature settled in, began kneading his clavicle and purring loudly. Glav dropped his voice, whispered something to the creature, then turned and handed it to Leo.

His smile said volumes and did not give Leo a true chance to refuse.

Re: Fire walk with us [Term, Sondy & Goss]

Postby Leo Varniak on December 31st, 2009, 7:51 pm

This was Leo's second visit to the Temple of all gods - it was also his second visit to any temple. In retrospect, if a temple was, by definition, the house of the gods, then it should not have been so surprising to see one make themselves at home there. Leo sped through the main chamber and headed straight to the private room, finding Glav and two cats in it. One of the felines was engaged in conversation with the priest, but soon tired of being a cat and tested a series of alternate shapes.

Leo tensed at the sight. Had this been his first time here, he'd probably have considered making use of his all-purpose solution, which was bright, hot and liked the taste of old wood. He trusted Glav enough to refrain from setting fire to his temple, though. Quickly, he connected the dots in the speech, concluding that Glav was paying the entity handsomely for some good or service. He noted a small item wrapped in a cloth, and wondered what currency Glav may have traded away.

He stepped aside, letting the pathologic shapeshifter pass and harboring no great desire to touch it. Leo turned to Glav with questioning eyes, but the priest gave him no time to voice his thoughts. He said things about Ionu, a cat-thing called a Naryn, and the fact the creature was ostensibly a gift to his newfound group. Then he handed the sort-of-cat-beast to Leo, who held on to it as best he could.

"W... which side is up?" He tried to adjust his grip on the Naryn until the creature was a little more comfortable in his arms, hoping it would not start scratching at him. "I am not good with animals and children," he admitted, in that order. He would have preferred it if the fur were a little shorter - it could catch fire too easily the way it was.

"Anyway," he eyed the cat suspiciously, in a 'let's make a deal, you don't hurt me, I don't hurt you' kind of way. "We are ready for the next step, Glav. This is Terminus." He would have raised his arm, but the Naryn made it unfeasible, so he turned all the way to Terminus, and the cat with him. "He is the firedancer you told me about, the one you sensed in the city. He's willing to join the Circle of Zai and be a part of its triad."

Man and cat turned the other way. "And this is Sondra. She is here to listen, hopefully to aid. I believe she could help tremendously against Rhysol's agents. I would like her to attend... whatever comes next." Which, Leo hoped, would involve someone taking the cat off of him in the near future.

Re: Fire walk with us [Term, Sondy & Goss]

Postby Sondra on December 31st, 2009, 8:47 pm

Sondra lingered a little after the others. She was shifting her weight between her feet, as if debating whether to run toward or away from the temple. Holy things made her as nervous as the profane.
Her heart wasn't entirely defiled, so absorbing other's sins made her sick, but pure things made her equally nervous as she was tarnished by her visions and own vices.

Leaning forward, she finally tipped past the threshold and began to hasten after the men. Her eyes swept upward, awed by the costly glass windows. She almost ran into the emerging Ionu, distracted as she was by the temple's arabesques of stone and metal.

A strangled sound, resembling, "Ahahygg...!" jumped from her mouth as she watched solid matter stretch like clay and shimmer with new features. This was all the veneration she could manage for a passing god. (In later consideration, Sondra would feel like a village idiot, as she was partial to the trickster.)

Father Glav was met with a slightly calmer expression, though the Konti had an edge of suspicion to her looks. Exposure to humanity's worse nature dampened her ability to easily trust.

At least, Leo's awkward handling of the cat-thing-Naryn-whatever was entertaining. Not good with children? Sondra rolled her eyes, what a shocker.

Her perverse enjoyment of Leo's difficulties was soon punished as her eyes started to water. Evidently, the Naryn had enough of a cat's qualities to invoke Sondra's allergies.
She showed her palms in surrender and backed away from receiving the creature when Leo turned towards her.

"Hello," her greeting was moist and followed by a sniffle.
"Nice to meet you."
Between her grubby, masculine clothes and the way she clasped her hands, the Konti gave the impression of a ne'er do well on her best behavior.

Re: Fire walk with us [Term, Sondy & Goss]

Postby Terminus Norin on January 1st, 2010, 6:41 am

Terminus was an observant man, he was also a quiet man. Even his footfalls did not make much noise as they went through the great temple. The scent of spearmint was pleasant to Terminus as that form of mint was his favorite. The warm welcoming feel of the Main Hall did help him relax a little, but he was still apprehensive. He followed Leo as he seemed to know where they were headed.

Once thet had arrived at a little side sitting room he saw the man whom he presumed was Glav who was apparently having a conversation with one of two cats and the cat was not only having a conversation back, but it seemed to be frustrating Glav. The the cat jumped down and began to shift almost randomly and very quickly. His eye brow went up in interest and was no less interested to find out he had been in the presence of Ionu. Glav did seem to have some prestigious visitors. He also got the name of the other cat Naryn and apparently it was more than it appeared to be. He wondered what a Naryn actually was.

He was also amused by the fatc that Glav seemed to dump the Naryn off on an unsuspecting and ill prepared Leo and it seemed to take to a man who said he didn't like animals. He had also been watching Sondra with some interest. He noted that she seemd to stand back and was a litte disturbed being here. He also noted that the Naryn seemed to evoke an illness response in her.

He did on the other hand nod at Glav when Leo introduced him and waited to see what was to come

Glav looked thoughtful, stroked his chin, then gestured for the trio to take a seat by the fire. Where there was two wing back chairs there was now a double set of them totaling four with a small table between the pairs. A tea set rested on the dark wood, ready to be poured.. Everyone could have swore there was but two in front of the fire when they joined him in the little sitting room.

The priest nodded to Sondra and smiled slightly. "Give the Naryn a little time and your body will adjust. It is not a cat, trust me, though its illusionism is so perfect that it fools all your senses into thinking so. Once your body realizes its not actually reacting to fact, it will calm down and your nose will not run. Either that or make friends with it so it changes its illusion." He said, pulling forth a lace kerchief and handing it to the grubby urchin with all the dignity he'd normally reserve for a lady of true status.

"It is a pleasure to meet you all."
Glav said gently, then settled into his chair, looking thoughtful.

"I am rarely at a loss for words, but what I have to tell you has no true beginning and no true ending - yet - so its difficult to decide where to begin."
The man inhaled, exhaled, and looked thoughtful. "Your lives are in danger just by associating with Leo Varniak. That is the first and most important thing you should understand. There are agents loose in this city that seek his death, because they are placed here specifically to make sure no triad gets reformed. And while, young lady, I can tell you are not one of Ivak's own, if you associate with these men much longer, and he finds you useful, that will change drastically. So each of you better think intently whether or not you want to hear what I have to say. If you do not, you should leave now, because if you don't - you won't be able to unlearn what you will know after you walk out those doors." He said, glancing at the doorway that lead to the main temple. The double doors were now closed. There had been no sound or indication of them doing so.

He paused, giving any of them time to rise and leave before he continued. It was their choice. But he wanted them to know there was no turning back.

"First I should tell you about your enemies. Later, it will be very clear why they are your enemies. But trust me now when I say it is so. There is one very powerful one here. It is called a Druvin. Rhysol infuses mortals, normally humans, with his blood and makes them somewhat more than mortal. The ritual they undergo augments their strength and lifespan, so they can live hundreds of years and have double, sometimes triple or quadruple the strength of what they once had. I suspect the Druvin he has here is female, though I am not certain. And it has several high ranking members of its faith with it. They are equally dangerous. I dare not get close because if she discovers my presence here, a great deal of effort could be lost. It is one of the reasons I am... hiding in plain sight, so to speak." He said, then leaned forward, casually pouring tea for everyone. He let that sink in for a few minutes before he continued. "You will know the Druvin by their eyes. Normally they loose their pigmentation and they look as if they only have whites without pupils. If you run across such an individual, do not confront them. Get away from them as fast as possible. Because they wield a powerful gnosis... called Chaon."

Cups were passed out and he indicated they'd be free to partake of the tray that held cookies and small shortbread squares that hadn't been there before.

Glav began to speak again, then, lowering his voice and catching each one's glance subsequently. "Chaon is a powerful force. It is the ultimate ability to corrupt. It willingly seeks out a faint fear, a doubt, and twists it into something bigger, something more forceful until your whole entire outlook has changed. It magnifies doubts horrifically, and twists them into living things deep inside you until you go slightly insane with it. And the power creeps up so unexpectedly, building upon itself repeatedly. If you think, for example, your body is weak. It will start on that thought and twist it until you actually look at yourself and see yourself as wasting away until nothing is left but skin and bones. In reality though, you might be gaining weight until your grotesquely fat because you've been eating so much to compensate for what you thought was a wasting disease." He said, shaking his head.

"Ivak's gnosis can counter this slightly. The Zaital especially, though other families can as well, 'release' this emotion within people - this chaos - and free it from them which renders Rhysol's Chaon a bit useless. It has to be identified first, however, before it can be released. That makes you dangerous to the Druvin here. That is why the other triad perished."
Glav said thoughtfully.

"Now, there's another reason a triad is needed here. You might not understand it, especially at first, but hopefully if you look to the broader picture, you will understand."
Glav said, picking up his teacup and sipping it thoughtfully.

"I need protection, because I am often distracted protecting something else that is here."

He let the words sink in then set down his teacup.

"I am the last surviving Alvina Sylir spawned. Sylir, however, didn't exactly perish in the Valterrian as everyone suspected. But his mere death did upset the balance of things giving Rhysol a tighter hold over that which he already owned and solidified his bid to expand his territory. Sylir fragmented, and his largest fragment is here. As you might have guessed, its the Windoak. And unlike most fragments, this one is highly special. Each seed pod it drops, each leaf it grows, each taproot it sends down... is an infusion of my father's power. Because the Windoak is here and so much of Syilr remains within it, I can ascend to Godhood and take his place as the balance of Peace and Civilization on Mizahar." He paused, nodded, and continued.

"Rhysol doesn't know. His minions spread out across the world gathering artifacts and reabsorbing their power to grow stronger themselves. If he did know about the Windoak, he'd throw everything he had at Syliras to acquire it. If he knew about me, he'd perhaps send The Voice herself, his wife, to dispatch me. She might perhaps succeed. The Druvin is no match, at least not now, but there are issues.... for one, I am ready to ascend. I need to ascend because my power is such that I've gathered too much too quickly and my half-mortal body is not designed to contain it. But I cannot... not now... not yet." He said, studying the trio thoughtfully.

"I cannot ascend while Ivak is still imprisoned. I need him released in all his full force to perform the ritual. I cannot leave the Windoak unguarded to see too Ivak's release. I have the keys to release Ivak because it was my father's sacrifice that imprisoned him. I cannot leave myself unguarded to find Ivak in order to see about his release in order to ascend." He said, chuckling slightly at the complexity. "I can however help form up, train, and empower a triad of Azenth to clean out the Druvin and Rhysol taints here in Syliras. I can indeed help them become strong enough so they can use their links to Ivak to find Ivak's prison. And once the Druvin is dead, her minions sent back to whatever pit they crawled out of, it will be safer for the Windoak and decidedly safer for me to help you three free Ivak and thus ascend." He said, realizing it was complicated, but yet very very important.

"I realize asking you three to help make me a God is about the last thing you might consider selfless. But Mizahar's chaos partially exists because there is a void and a vacuum in power. With peace and civilization gone from the world, humans and others like the konti do struggle, needlessly. And its not something the world can tolerate well for long."
He concluded, then sat back and let them digest what he had to say.

Re: Fire walk with us [Term, Sondy & Goss]

Postby Leo Varniak on January 9th, 2010, 9:42 pm

No-one, mortal or divine, bothered taking the Naryn off of Leo. The man himself had no idea what would happen if he dropped it, and was not going to chance it on being careless. This thing was an ally, and he would even personally feed it if he really had to in order to win. And so, he sat with the cat-thing on his lap as Glav reassured Sondra that her allergy was just a figment of her imagination.

The tale itself was a big surprise right after the introduction. Leo was confident neither one of his companions would leave now, as he had made no mystery of the danger involved. Glav was telling them nothing new here. The rest was, however, entirely novel even to him. He wished Glav had told him beforehand. He had been quite irresponsible to withhold so much information when Leo's life was on the life. The priest may be hiding in plain sight, but Leo was in plain sight, period. It turned out Glav knew much more than he had let on to him, and Leo doubted he'd discovered all this in the period following his first visit.

Then again, it was only to be expected of these peace & love people. They were never direct about things; they always approached you at an angle. For Leo, love and peace were on a long, long vacation and they were hardly missed. He still took in the info with a rather expressionless face, only startling a bit when Glav mentioned ascending to godhood.

Why, this man's memory surely must be playing tricks on him! To have neglected such a vital detail on their first meeting. Leo was quite annoyed by now, and he had to catch himself from boiling his tea as a distraction. He did not like the divine politics aspect of this, no matter how good Glav made it sound. It wasn't that he didn't want Glav to ascend, it just sounded like being sidetracked, like taking a detour from the main path. Leo did not enjoy having more than one thing on this mind at the same time.

"As far as I am concerned," Leo spoke at last, "I am in this to serve my own justice. To me, this leg of the journey ends with Ivak's liberation, no sooner and no later, with quite a few creatures in need of tasting fire along the way. What Ivak chooses to do with his freedom, which I intend to give him upon confirmation that he has truly calmed down, is none of my business. If he wants to help you ascend and take your father's place, then more power to you, quite literally. My allegiance is only with what I feel must be done, though. I want no rewards and I expect no further ties than those I choose for myself."

He wasted no more words. He was far more interested in knowing how to kill the Druvin if they were supposed to run upon sighting her. The chess games of the immortals bored Leo Varniak to no end. He just wanted to watch the bad guys burn.
