19th Spring 522 AV – T & T Apartments

He had spent the morning at the armour stalls, not for any desire to purchase which tended to frustrate the merchants until he moved to the next, but instead because he wanted to see how it was all put together. Since his experimentations with Reimancy had begun he had concentrated on res control, with a few applications for attacking, or controlling, others. He had always meant to get himself some armour since his life had experienced its upheavals, but he had never really gotten around to it. He supposed, in hindsight, that it was foolish of him to have let such a basic thing slip. Now, though, he had an idea for his own more portable armour – assuming eh could make it work.

It had also been quite fascinating for him, from a purely curiosity standpoint. How often did someone who wasn’t a blacksmith just sit and think upon how armour was made? How it slotted together and moved, almost as if alive and as an organism might? He knew he had never thought of such things before the past few days, but what he had managed to research had told him that there was a reason prized Blacksmiths were so renowned, and much sought after. He could spend a lifetime and not master the art, though he felt sure he’d find much amusement trying to do so.

However, he had also visited a dealer in stones – both precious and construction based – and he kept up quote a long conversation over thoroughly too much wine about his craft. Honestly, he wasn’t sure whether he’d ever forget the minutiae of all of the different types of stone – Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic. Or the different types of hardness, resonance and lustres. What had interested him most, though, wasn’t how shiny something was, or valuable, but instead how many blows it could absorb. Thus, he had been introduced to Jade, a stone that was apparently even used for armour due to its unique properties at being thoroughly unbreakable – at least up to a point. Even stronger than some metals, or so the merchant had claimed.

“And so here we are…how the petch do I even start?” he mused to himself as he stood in his training room and mused aloud, scratching his chin and frowning in thought, “Res comes from within right…so can travel through all skin…breath…hmmmm”

He looked at his right arm and with his left passed over it, extruding Res as he moved it down to his wrist, stopping there and looking at the silvery iridescence covering his entire arm for a few moments. He snorted and then imagined Res flooding up through his lungs, throat and then breathed it out in a mist that covered his left arm, it took longer as it was a new thing for him, but eventually as he turned his forearm around and willed it all to travel up to his shoulder he covered his left arm. He concentrated, imagining the feel, colour lustre and make up of the piece of Jade he had spent so long handling, willing the change in the Res but leaving a thin covering of unchanged Res over his skin, linking the stone to his skin and clothing.

It rippled and the shift happened, as he turned his arms over to look at both sides, the imagined articulations at the elbow that he had researched were there – though they were rough. He bent his arms and moved his shoulder, finding that they had reasonable movement for a first attempt. He chuckled into the empty room, intent on moving forwards and adding a bit more spice to his experimentation once he had established the basics of his ‘armour’.

Now that the principle of the matter was resolved Alric set about setting up the rest of his ‘armour’ as quickly as he could without wobbling in his control. He found it interesting that he could extrude Res in different ways, not just from his hands as he felt he did best whilst Shielding. No, this was more primal and reacted to his thoughts, his needs, almost as if it were simply waiting for him to signal them for a reaction. Instead of smearing it with his hands this time he repeated the attempt at breathing it out, the gaseous Res pouring out of his mouth and slinking down to spiral around, and coat, his legs, with its silvery iridescence. He converted it much as he had with his arms, the outer layers rippling and taking on the colouring, and texture, of jade.

After a few moments of marvelling at the creation, his hatred for magics now long gone and instead replaced with a cautious curiosity, if not wonder, he frowned, and his focus turned to the internal. He wanted to try extruding directly from his skin this time, for the chest, and even as he began to try, he could tell that it was resistant for some reason. He closed his eyes and tried to force it, but it was no use. Willpower, it seemed, was only so useful when it came to the elements. He retreated his focus for a few moments, breathing deeply and sweating slightly, before the idea he had had previously hit him – it was primal. Emotional, even. Would it react to his emotions, usually submerged as they were?

He tried to conjure up the most scared he had been in the past, when he had desperately needed the most protection, and within a few chimes it was as if his entire body snapped it out and his Res surged from every pore, covering his torso and transforming itself like the rest of the res had, but of its own volition and merely at what his mind had communicated as his need. He was so shocked that he almost broke it off halfway but resisted, instead his eyes widened and he pushed back the whispers of power unfulfilled, his legs wobbling slightly with the new creation until he could restore some sort of stability, blinking for a while before running his jade covered fingers over his torso and finding it covered with jade also, the tap turned into a brief resonant ring as he slapped his fist into it with a laugh.

“Alright…we’ve got…well some weird armour thing…now, what can we do to make it different to normal armour? Must be something now Alric, magic is oh so sneaky and special” he muttered to himself, raking his fingers back through his hair and grinning when he realised he had expected normal fingertips rather than the smooth stone that came.

He looked upon his creations, feeling them out and toying with the delicate controls of the non-transformed Res underneath the hard armour. It felt almost weightless upon his body, though there was a slight strain upon his mind and willpower. He felt sure that if he let the whole thing transform the weight would buckle his knees and send him toppling. So, he made a definite mental note to never let that happen. In a way he wasn’t concerned about that overly much, instinctively he felt as if his Res already knew that it was a bad idea to crush its owner, so long as he remained in control. Sensing out the joint in the armour he could feel its gaps, weaknesses and the articulated points that his imagination had conjured up.

“Starting to like this magic,” he muttered to himself begrudgingly, flexing his fingers and moving around, feeling out the pull and limitations of his movements, “now…stone is a weapon as well as a shield. Let’s try…” he trailed off, focusing his mind and taking a few deep breaths as he centered himself, then chuckling as he remembered this wasn’t like the Flux.

No, this was more like an animalistic dance than meditative, old and elemental, and that gave him the idea of how to use his imagination to try something altogether new. He conjured up the spectre of enemies surrounding him, needing to have their attacks deflected before striking back. He felt the still raw Res beneath the transformed jade armour throb and resonate, as if sensing what he wanted but unable to move as he still maintained his rigid control over it. He repeated the process a few more times to test it out, the same pattern of imagined enemies and felt the vibrating resonance each time, then snorted and took a deep breath before launching himself into what he would alter call a very crude, and terribly co-ordinated dance that would put most good dancers into the revolted line.

He was a terrible dancer, even when he took it slow and deliberate, but what he lacked in dancing ability he felt he made up in potentially increased life expectancy and researched innovation. Each piece of jade almost swam atop a portion of Res, able to move through the air and recombine at will so long as he could imagine it so. He would’ve cackled, if it wouldn’t have broken his concentration, as his limbs moved into attacks that came a few seconds behind the jade armour’s recombining into a floating shield that had deflected an attack.

Stepping into another one and ducking he felt the Res flow at his command, the smaller pieces becoming a sort of whirlwind around him that would slice through anyone within its remit, before flying to resettle upon his arms for an elbow-punch combination. He jumped through the air, a portion of the jade armour that had been the backplate floating underneath him, ready for his hands as he tilted backwards, using it as a springboard to push off of to then land upon his feet, the Res whistling around him to settle once more, after a few chimes, into the full armour setup.

“Gods…damn,” he panted, the sweat pouring down his forehead to splatter over his ‘armour’ before he bent over laughing with excitement, “bloody…I don’t even…what else can this stuff do?” he panted to himself as he recovered.

Stone Dreams Pt III

He was suddenly filled with an inner tingling, not of Overgiving as he had experienced before, but of wonder. It took him a few moments to realise what it was he was experiencing, as up until that moment he had seen magic as a tool or necessary evil. What it was now, though, was fun. When had that happened? Was it something that had crept up on him, or a result of events playing out the way that they had? After all, at this point magic was one of the few things he had going for him – at least that he could remember. It was still dangerous, he had no illusions of that, but the unrealised possibilities alongside the fact that it was beginning to feel more like play than a chore sometimes was slowly winning him over, he realised.

“Speaking of possibilities…let’s see what we can do about combining things. It must be possible, at least with the things I’ve learned already…it did say in my journal that some magics were compatible whilst others weren’t. These all feel like…well not combat magics but still” he mused, scratching his chin with jade fingers. He took a few moments to muse which ones to try to combine, and grinned, eyeing the punching bag that already looked so battered from repeated use.

He felt that it would be reasonably simple, once he was confident about using them together. He felt the desire to begin to push boundaries, but he resisted for now. He knew he wasn’t ready, not just quite yet. Combining Flux, Shielding and Auristics seemed something he was comfortable with, but not with this new Reimancy, at the moment. No, he wasn’t suicidal. Soon, though, he felt – he was making quick progress so far and by the end of the season he assumed he’d be learning how to work them together without blowing himself up. In some ways he was looking forward to it, it would be less boring than repeated fundamentals.

“But fundamentals…they’re important. Especially given the short time frame of learning. Still, there are some things that I can try,” he noted with a small sense of sadness at his own infuriating patience before squinting back at the punching bag with a flicker of mischief in his eyes, it was about the right size and density as the body it was designed to imitate after all, so he pointed his left hand towards it, palm down and stepped within an arm’s length for range, “go have fun” he muttered to the lade on his arm, imagining the outcome he wanted.

After a little while of focusing, calling up his burning hatred for Arcadius and wishing it was him that was about to be shredded, the Res underneath the jade ‘plates’ began to vibrate and move, floating up form his body and aligning to point at the bottom of the punching bag, then surging forwards and smashing through the bottom of the battered thing, tearing it apart and sending its innards floating into the air.

He twisted and did the same with his right arm, ripping the rest of it apart in a barrage of jade, almost a lance of small projectiles he thought, making a note for later experimentation. The pieces he had sent forth all fell to the floor as they went through it, falling out of his range and scattering across the floor in all directions due to the speed of their movements. He felt the res leave his realm of control, there to dissolve and leave him with just his legs and torso covered in his jade ‘armour’.

The feeling of fatigue crept over him, slinking around his shoulders like a warm blanket even as he knew he had a little more to practise with. At the very least he had to get the rest of the jade off of himself before he ceased his experimentations. He blinked a few times with tired eyes, settling upon the remains of the chair from the days before, nodding to himself faintly and conjuring up the anger once more, the seething hatred for the monster who had ruined his life, and the life of his parents. Summoning up the last of his energies he lashed out a kick towards the chair, willing the jade pieces to fly at it as with the bag, then span and kicked with the other leg to repeat the process.

There was the satisfying sound of splintering wood, the chair all but obliterated under the two assaults, before he very slowly fell backwards and slammed into the floor, the jade around his torso sounding somewhat like a dulled bell as it hit the floor. It took him a while to realise he was upon his back, and slightly longer to curse his own foolishness for pushing himself beyond his boundaries. It had seemed such a good idea, and he was happy with his efforts for the day, but now as the throbbing in his head began, and the whispers in his ears teased, he wished he had stopped halfway through.

“Oh…petch” he groaned as he dug the heels of his palms into his eyes to try to relieve the pressure building there.

It took him a while to push the jade plate off of the front of his torso, then crawling to the comfortable chair downstairs with twilight following him curiously, likely wondering why the biped had suddenly become a snake too, he thought. He was grateful for the creature though, as it butted him curiously, flicking its tongue at his nose when he stopped moving for too long, as if pressuring him to keep going. When he got to the chair he stuffed his face just long enough to realise that it was a bad idea, impulse taking over and energy returning as he ran to a bucket and his stomach heaved its contents out with acidic bile.

He fell asleep then for a time, despite the throbbing ache in his temples, and woke to Twilight curled upon his back, head draped around to his face and watching him intently. He scratched Twilight’s head tiredly and pushed himself up, making his way to the chair where he collapsed, the snake in his lap to mumbled words akin to ‘good boy’ and other variations of single syllable words. There was no more magical practise, and likely not for a few days either given how wobbly he felt, the world teetering slightly and he shut out the sweet whispers.

“Gods help me Twilight…gods help me” he moaned to the mussurana, largely because it was the only thing he felt that he could even do for a time.
