Race: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 25
Birthday: 498,3rd day of Winter
Birthplace: Ravok
Appearance:
Valentina stands at 5’9 and weighs 145 pounds as of the recent muscle building from her dancing mentor. Her face is neatly framed by her well-groomed black hair. Hanging just above her shoulder, slight curls create a soft wave extending down past the ear before reaching the shoulder tops. While often well-maintained it can often get messy and require combing out before turning from needing a simple touch up to being tangled and knotted.
Her face is shaped similarly to that of a diamond. With smooth cheekbones to round out the shape under Val’s eyes. Looking above the eyes one would see well groomed curved eyebrows. The short hair of the brow is trimmed tightly into a point as it follows the outline of her eye. Said eyes are brown and often very active, especially in crowds or unfamiliar situations.
Often Val is emotive and expressive with her face but will quickly become plane and blank in the face of fear or threats. Constant reminders of many lessons built over years in Ravok. After a particularly intense moment of fear Val’s nails may end up noticeably shorter over the next few weeks as an unhealthy instinctive nail biting that was never kicked out of her. In extreme moments the skin just above her wrist will sometimes have small bite marks, but these can often be dismissed as just rough handling of something.
Possessing no tattoo’s her ears however are pierced twice, her lobe and cartilage. Often used for placement of fashionable and modest jewelry. Her lips are thin, often with little or no cosmetics applied. Whenever possible and within her means Valentina will be clean, well groomed and presentable.
Character Concept
Much like the family she was born into Val is fiercely ambitious. Raised hearing of her family's ancestors who would boisterously overindulge in stories of their own accomplishments. Accomplishments “won” by their own two hands and shrewd minds. Valentina however had learned that in her family she was not the one meant to be boisterous. As one of the youngest she struggled to fully grasp exactly what games her siblings would be playing and was often a scapegoat for plans that went awry.
As much as she wouldn't expect to admit it internally she is fully a product of her upbringing. Many years spent being strung along by her elder siblings Val payed attention and started to understand the political moves and counter moves among her siblings eventually hoping to be more actively involved in Ravoks politics as she got older. Being used in such plots and schemes to be just as cold as well as calculating. However she often is not able to separate herself emotionally from whatever scheme she was apart. Often feeling guilty for whatever part she had to play in someone else's political games.
With an environment that favors pawns and social ,manipulation Val longs to be independent and not held down by anyone else’s wishes for her own life. Yet, the entire thought is terrifying. Being sensible enough to know so much of what she has and knows fully stems from her privileged upbringing. She views Syka as a place for her ambition to thrive and grow. A way to prove herself to her family and claim her own independence.
Character History
Val was born as the fifth child of 6. Youngest of two daughters and often forgotten and seen only as one of many. Both too her mother, who raised the children, as well as to peers and outsiders looking on at the family. The Adair family is minor in the grand schemes of political plots but has a place nonetheless. While the rumors circulate over how the family got its status, it is most often attributed to the family’s tailoring businesses. Specifically those dealing with high fashion dresses and gowns.
Valentina’s father has expanded this business from simply servicing the noble district and opening a few lower end shops closer to the docks and merchants ring. Travellers, guests and upper-middle class is a market they could easily exploit.
The Adair family has a few other small business ventures that give the house more influence but the returns are minor and usually just go back into said small businesses. Of course the goal is these minor assets will one day become bigger and more involved but the family has not prioritized these. The Patriarch of the Adair family has found his own new lucrative adventure, pit fights.
While never directly engaging with the practice herself Valentina has seen some of her familys servants and slaves come through the main house or at some of the establishments. But the one day her older brother took her to a pit fight was an unwelcome experience. The kind of brutality on display was unlike any she had seen before. Such things were not commonly seen in the great free city of Ravok after all. Their god wouldn't allow such things.
Like all citizens of the city, Rhysol is a part of everyday life. Her own family's home had an entire room built as a shrine dedicated to him. Schooling revolved around him. Her eldest brother was a member of the Black Sun and it was expected another child should join as well. The aforementioned shrine was a place Valentina was familiar with.
When she acted out as a child, was blamed for an action one of her siblings did, failed in school or any other infraction her mother would lock her and any other child who was guilty inside the room and wait for them to pray. To pray, and mean it. Such punishment was common, especially when Val was young. Stuck in this room with her mother listening on the other side of the door. Sometimes if it was taking too long a trusted slave would be instructed with specific rules on when and when not to let out Valentina
Her father would sometimes jape about putting one of the children in the room, though he never did, as if it wasn't a big deal. Punishment by her mother was accompanied always with guilt and shaming of the younger Val. Sometimes the punishment was fair, like when she smacked her younger brother and his eye puffed out for a week. More often however it was over what Val saw as minor things, or things she couldn't control.
Once she was punished for getting the second highest mark on a test. Her mother hadn't cared that she did better than nearly everyone else. Had she been average with the rest of the students it wouldn't have mattered, she would have just been that; average, forgettable. Yet her daughter being so close but overshadowed, was something the family couldn't allow out of its own members. After it happened a second time, Val sought out her older brother for help. His suggestion was to do something that would cause the other student to be distracted during class. With his help Valentina started a rumor around the other children that this students father was under investigation for forging his citizenship papers and that he was a runaway from a powerful family. In the end, Valentina ended up having the highest marks in the class.
Games and schemes like this were common. “A healthy paranoia of one's allies is good.” her father would say, “The knife you least expect is the one most likely to stab most true.” A healthy paranoia. Her father often jokes about attempting to poison his father at formal balls just to make sure the cooks and guards were observing. Her grandfather had choked to death at a feast. But it was on loose bone, not poison.
Ambition, pride and a healthy paranoia. Traits found in the entire family in one way or another and certainly found in Valentina. A constant strive to be better meant learning how to game the system, the schools were funded and run by the religious teachers of Ravok. They were looking for obedience. And Valentina would give it to them. As a reward, she would study at the Institute of Higher learning.
The basics of medicine and treatment was of particular interest to Valentina. She took to it well enough. Finding it easier to work with others who were all here for a more singular specific goal of learning a skill, instead of pleasing their god like in her earlier education. At home, she would begin learning a new skill as well. With a desire to ensure the small family was unpredictable, her father hired a tutor.
A special tutor, one who would only practice at home or alone somewhere away from prying social eyes. A Vantha man ,by the name of Coren, was in the city and was brought in to be introduced to Valentina as her new instructor. At first she was confused, this man was certainly anything but a doctor. Burly shoulders, fit body and a worldly presence about him. When the day of her first instructor was to begin Valentina was even more confused when she was to go and meet the man in what would appear to be a rehearsal room for dancers. It was here, alone, the man informed her that he was a Flux practitioner.
Under the guise that she would be learning dancing to woo suitors. Instead she would be taught to both channel and redirect her own Djed. The primal energy that makes up all manner of life in the universe. While her father hoped she would never need it, being able to run faster, fighter harder or jump higher than the family's enemies expected could save her life one day.
It was much harder than treating wounds, learning about ailments or anything else in the Institute of Higher Learning. Channeling the Flux was much harder to grasp, and far more painful when she struggled. The pain she felt when amassing too much Djed into her legs the first time left her practically crippled from painful spasms. Her instructor had the two spar with dull swords, as his instructor had taught him. This, also, was hard on Valentina. She was skinny, ate only what was deemed appropriate and was not allowed to ever exert herself too much around her mother for fear of looking improper.
As her studies were continuing and becoming routine, her father and mother began discussing “worthy suitors'' as well as words like “betrothal”. Things that it would seem, Val would have no say in. By a stroke of luck she overheard some fellow students speaking of the news from a far away settlement. A new land with lush tropical beaches and an opportunity for a new life.
Initially rejected by her mother on principle, any suggestion to the matriarch of the family was always dismissed without first planting the seed in her head that it was her own idea. Valentina’s father eventually found the idea intriguing. Then grew more and more interested before yielding to Valentina’s agreement. The family would sponsor the trip to Riverfall, getting Val on a caravan heading for the city, but it would be up to her own wit and wills to go further along.

Val has a dress almost identical to this except the outer layer is a deep purple. Sewn for her in preparation to her trip the dress is made of a light linen, allowing for plenty of style in its craft, but also giving it plenty of ability to breath.
Even with the added breath ability of the materials having a undershirt quickly proved problematic. By the end of her first night in Syka, Val took a hasty knife to her dress. Cutting the long under arms and the added fluff on her cuff. The outer piece still stayed intact but became more serviceable to her in her new life.
The rest of her items consist of survival gear, and housing.
Val has a backpack that she uses as both for its intended purpose but as an organizing tool. Holding almost all of her possessions except that she holds on herself in the bag. Until a more permanent situation develops she has little need of more organized storage.
